Wednesday’s betting tips: Suspensions leave Georgia short at RB

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Temple is 12-4 against the number in its last 16 road games.

NHL: The over is 9-1 in Toronto’s last 10 road games.

NHL: Philadelphia is 7-3 in its last 10 games against Buffalo.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: Ohio is 1-4 against the spread in its last five overall.

NHL: New Jersey is 1-4 in its last five overall.

NHL: Colorado is 7-23 in its last 30 home games.

    Key stat

10 – The Temple Owls allow just 10 points per game, ranking second in the nation. The Owls have held their opposition under double digits five times this season, including a pair of shutouts.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils - New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur is ready to return to action and could start Wednesday night at home to Toronto. Brodeur hasn't played since Oct. 13 after suffering a shoulder injury in the first period of a game against the Los Angeles Kings. Brodeur tweaked the shoulder while attempting to make a diving save. "I felt real good today and if they need me (Wednesday), I’ll be ready,” Brodeur said. “It’s the hardest I’ve gone as far as reaction and competing and I was fine.”

    Game of the day

Temple Owls at Ohio Bobcats (3.5, 47.5)

    Notable quotable

"I don't think the gulf is as wide as it seemed over there. So now it's up to us to show our pride and belief. I don't think it was a decisive game, it hasn't jeopardized our chances of qualifying. Now we need to be competitive and try and get at least one point, in order to keep on moving toward qualification." - Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis told the UEFA website about Wednesday’s meeting with Real Madrid. Lyon was hammered 4-0 by Madrid last month and is set as a +445 underdog. Real Madrid is favored at -180 with the draw at +270.

    Notes and tips

Bettors don’t appear to be scared off from Temple’s 13-10 loss to Bowling Green last week as a 12-point favorite. As of Tuesday evening, more than 70 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were backing the Owls as they head into Wednesday’s game at Ohio. Oddmakers opened with Temple set as around 4.5-point favorites, but that line quickly dropped to -3.5. The total is holding at 47.5.

Georgia running backs Isaiah Crowell, Carlton Thomas and Ken Malcome have been suspended for Saturday's game against New Mexico State. Head coach Mark Richt confirmed the suspensions for violating team rules, although didn't divulge the exact nature of the reasoning. "They didn't do things the Georgia way," Richt said. The news comes on the same day that the Bulldogs announced that rusher Richard Samuel is sidelined for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury. Samuel suffered the injury on the last play of the game against Florida. Georgia is now down to Brandon Harten and Wes Van Dyk at the running back position for Saturday's game. Cromwell is the team's top tailback and ranks fifth in the Southeastern Conference. The freshman has carried the ball 146 times for 689 yards. Georgia is a 34.5-point favorite this week.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Why is Syracuse playing Cal State-Los Angeles in an exhibition game? They couldn't find a cupcake in the east to beat up on?

-- Arizona found a western cupcake in Seattle Pacific, only Arizona lost to the Falcons 69-68. SPU plays at Washington this weekend.

-- Few years ago Syracuse lost to LeMoyne in an exhibition game, then made the Final Four later that year. It doesn't mean all that much.

-- QB Garrett Gilbert, who quit the Texas football team earlier this year, will enroll at SMU and play for June Jones.

-- Weird NFL scheduling; no byes in Week 10, four in Week 11; those are the last byes this season.

-- A week from Friday, North Carolina-Michigan State play out in San Diego on a battleship to honor our nation's veterans.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on my way home.......

      13) Had a great time at the UNLV-Washburn game Tuesday night, first time I've ever seen the Rebels play in person. UNLV shot 4-23 in a tense first half against a well-coached Washburn squad, then won at the end by 8. Problem for UNLV is this: the best guard on the court was Washburn's William McNeill, who had 21 of The Ichabods' 50 points. McNeill didn't play last season after breaking his foot-- he's pretty freakin' good.

      12) Jerry Tarkanian sat under one basket and watched the game played on a court named after him; lot of history in that building. They still shoot off the fireworks before the game. All in all, a very cool experience.

      11) Toledo scored 60 points at home Tuesday night in football and didn't win, and the game didn't go overtime. Northern Illinois beat them 63-60; if Woody Hayes was watching up in heaven, I'm guessing he wasn't happy.

      10) I'm convinced mainstream media is pumping up Andrew Luck more than usual because he goes to a good academic school. He's very good, no doubt about that, but the best QB prospect in the last decade? Exactly how much better is he than Cam Newton?

      9) Interesting TV, watching Merril Hoge just shred Tim Tebow's play on ESPN this week; we hear far too much about Tebow, who obviously isn't ready to start in the NFL. I'm not ready to write him off as a bust, but he has to become 1,000 times better as a passer before he's a competent QB in the NFL. His situation gets far too much media attention.

      8) What a horrific loss by the Chargers Monday night, blowing a chance to win on an easy FG because Philip Rivers botched a center snap. That loss will hover over them like a dark cloud until they make the playoffs, and even moreso if they don't get home field advantage.

      7) Exactly what do NBA players think they're gaining by missing out on playing games? Think the owners will cave? I don't. Players are listening to bad advice, probably from all those scumweasel greedy agents.

      6) Speaking of greedy, gas prices have risen out here since my last trip, up to about $3.53 a gallon, almost as much as in Albany. Think Hess station was $3.63 when I left home, the Mobil greedy bastards were at $3.79.

      5) Saw a good movie Monday; Ides of March with George Clooney. I'm highly recommending this movie. Language is a little tough at times, but it is a good story with interesting twists. The guywho played Art Howe in Moneyball has a big role in this movie too, and he doesn't look like Whitey Herzog this time, which helps.

      4) Someone has to buy Chiefs' coach Todd Haley a new cap; the one he had on Monday night looked like it gone run over by a bus. A big one.

      3) Congrats to Tony Larussa on a great career; 33 years of managing in the major leagues. He sure doesn't look like he's 67. The best job he did with my A's was in 1992, when a suspect Oakland team made playoffs. Never forget a home run Eric Fox hit in Minnesota to win a pivotal game in the pennant race that year. Hope Mr Larussa enjoys his retirement.

      2) Mistakenly thought I was getting an extra week of vacation this week, but the clocks go back this coming Saturday instead, so it'll start getting dark at about 4:00 starting Sunday. I'm not fond of winter.

      1) Had a fun time on my annual fall vacation to the desert; this trip was a little different, staying at South Point, off the Strip, but it was refreshing and now its time to get to work. College basketball starts Monday.

I highly recommend South Point by the way; 24-hour bowling, movies in the hotel, terrific food, a good sportsbook with comfortable food, 75 cent hot dogs and very attractive waitresses. A good place to stay.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Buffalo Sabres (-140, 5.5)

The Philadelphia Flyers are a hard bunch to figure out early this season, though maybe that’s to be expected.

They’re trying to get used to Ilya Bryzgalov starting most nights in goal and reshaped their offense in the offseason. Plus, they’re missing captain Chris Pronger as he recovers from an eye injury.

But this is getting to be a bit much.

After jumping out of the gate to pick up nine points through their first five games, they’ve either been invisible or amazing – and often both within a span of 60 minutes. Following a wild 9-8 loss to Winnipeg, Philadelphia rebounded to drill Carolina 5-1 on Saturday thanks to a four-goal third period.

The Flyers’ newly formed line of Jaromir Jagr, Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell combined for nine points in that win and look to be really coming together. As long as the Flyers can stay out of the penalty box and avoid long stretches of play in their own end, they should be in the mix to score an upset.

              Pick: Flyers

Phoenix Coyotes at Colorado Avalanche (-140, 5.5)

There were a couple of good signs that came out of Colorado’s 3-2 win over Los Angeles on Sunday.

It was the club’s first win on home ice this season and last year’s leading scorer, Matt Duchene, scored his first of the season which also turned out to be the game winner.

"I thought we played our best hockey after we got the lead, after Duchene's goal," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco told reporters. "We started to play more to our identity. We were on loose pucks, we had a better forecheck. I think that's a positive sign."

If you dig into the numbers though, you’ll see there’s some work to be done. Colorado was outshot 32-16 and was outplayed for long stretches during the game.

Meanwhile, Phoenix is coming off a pair of nice wins over New Jersey and L.A.

              Pick: Coyotes
