Tuesday’s betting tips: Shop around for NIU-Toledo odds

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Toledo is 7-3-1 against the spread in its last 11.

NHL: Vancouver has won seven of its last eight games against Calgary.

NHL: The over is 7-0-1 in the last eight meetings between Tampa Bay and Carolina.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: Northern Illinois is 3-9-1 against the spread in its last 13 games against Toledo.

NHL: Ottawa is 5-18 in its last 23 meetings with Boston.

NHL: Minnesota is 8-17 in its last 25 games overall.

    Key stat

3.78 – The Washington Capitals shifted to more of a defensive system last season in an attempt to be more playoff ready and still hit the golf course early. This year they’ve back leading the NHL with 3.78 goals per game

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning – St. Louis missed Monday’s practice with an undisclosed injury and is considered questionable for Tuesday’s game against Carolina. St. Louis has three goals and six assists for the Lightning, who are set as +105 underdogs at Carolina.

    Game of the day

Northern Illinois at Toledo (-7.5, 67)

    Notable quotable

“It’s a payback game. That loss ended our hunt for the MAC championship. Now we have a better understanding of what we need to do and how we need to finish as a team after playing against a harder out-of-conference schedule.” - Toledo senior running back Adonis Thomas about Tuesday’s game against Northern Illinois. Toledo lost 65-30 at Northern Illinois last season as a 11.5-point underdog.

    Notes and tips

As of Monday evening, there was no solid consensus on Tuesday’s Northern Illinois-Toledo pointspread. Online shops had Toledo favored at around -7.5 or -8.5 but some Las Vegas books had the Rockets pegged as high as -9. About 61 percent of *********** Consensus bettors are supporting Toledo. The total opened at 67 points.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb was wearing a walking boot Monday to protect a turf toe injury. Kolb was injured in the early stages of Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Baltimore Ravens but remained in the game. He took a season-high six sacks in the club's sixth straight defeat. Kolb said he was unsure whether he'd be ready to play against St. Louis this weekend. Backup John Skeleton is likely in line to start if Kolb is unable to play. Kolb, acquired in the offseason from Philadelphia, has passed for 1,706 yards and eight touchdowns this season.

NFL odds: Week 9 opening line report

What do you remember about Baltimore’s thumping of Pittsburgh in the opener?

Aside from Super Bowl losers falling to 0-12 against the spread and 2-10 straight up in Week 1 the following season, here’s what I remember:

The Ravens went for two in highly unusual circumstances. They had just scored to take a 27-7, third-quarter lead, and there was holder Sam Koch taking the snap and running left into the end zone.

“It leaves a taste in your mouth,” Steelers wideout Hines Ward said then. “The 2-point conversion. The passing at the end.

      “We’ll remember everything.”

Now they’re in position to do something about it.

At the time, the season opener felt like a coronation. The Ravens, who have not won the AFC North since 2006, would ascend to their rightful place and leave the aging, wounded Steelers in the dust.

Sunday, the Ravens were booed in their own stadium. They had to erase a 21-point deficit to beat woeful Arizona, one week after losing as double-digit favorites at Jacksonville.

The Steelers looked invigorated Sunday. They dismantled New England for their fourth straight win and own the AFC’s best mark at 6-2, half a game ahead of Baltimore and Cincinnati.

After the Week 1 blowout, Koch told the Baltimore Sun the 2-point conversion was not meant to send a message.

“You’ve got the Steelers and the Ravens, which is such a bitter rivalry year-in and year-out,” he said. “Rubbing it in their faces is definitely not the answer because you never know what can happen. You never know when a game can change or the momentum, especially in a game against the Steelers. It was just a way to add more points and give us a more comfortable lead.”

Coach John Harbaugh gave this explanation: “Sometimes you go with your head, sometimes you go with your heart. The second decision was probably going with my heart. I felt like we were going to get it. I felt like we could get it, and I thought we could really put the nail in the coffin.”
It was a humiliating loss for a proud franchise.

"The way they beat us is embarrassing," nose tackle Casey Hampton told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Since I've been here, nobody has beaten us like that on both sides of the ball for the entire game."

With the Steelers looking capable of exacting revenge, oddsmakers opened Pittsburgh as 3.5-point favorite in the Sunday night showdown.

“What’s always in the public’s mind is the last game," MGM Mirage sportsbook manager Jeff Stoneback told ***********. “Baltimore had to come back to beat a bad Arizona team, and Pittsburgh got the big win over New England. And it’s a revenge game: Pittsburgh got embarrassed. We figure the public’s going to figure they’re going to want to atone for that game.

“The public is going to want to bet Pittsburgh.”

You can break this game down from a myriad of angles.

Will LB LaMarr Woodley (hamstring) be able to play? He has six sacks over the last three games.

How likely are the Steelers to play near-perfect games in consecutive weeks? Facing New England’s defense is like a 7-on-7 passing drill. Baltimore is another animal entirely. The Ravens hound opposing QBs into a 65.5 passer rating.

On the other side, the Ravens receivers create little separation. Especially compared to Pittsburgh’s speed demons: Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders.

Baltimore came back Sunday because Joe Flacco started throwing to a covered Anquan Boldin and the 6-1, 223-pounder made terrific catches. Boldin likely won’t go off against Ike Taylor and the Steelers’ top-rated pass defense, which allows 171.6 yards a game and 5.8 yards per attempt.

      BIGGEST SPREADS OF THE WEEK

Seattle at Dallas (-12.5, 42.5), Cleveland at Houston (-10.5, 41)

Everyone expects Dallas to bounce back from its no-show Sunday night.

Seattle’s Tarvaris Jackson came back from his pectoral injury to throw for a career-high 323 yards against Cincinnati. But the Seahawks can’t run the ball, and usually their defense is weaker on the road.

Dallas is just 2-7 ATS as a home favorite since last year.

Cleveland, coming off another ugly offensive performance, is 3-7 ATS as a road dog since last year.

      SMALLEST SPREAD OF THE WEEK

New York Jets at Buffalo (-1, 43.5)

Teams coming off a bye were really struggling until Sunday, when they went 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS to bring the season marks to 8-10 SU and 8-9-1 ATS. The Jets come off a bye after edging San Diego thanks to 13 Chargers’ penalties.

Buffalo is getting very little respect here for its 5-2 start.

      BIGGEST TOTAL OF THE WEEK

New York Giants at New England (-9, 52.5), Green Bay at San Diego (4, 53)

Eli Manning is playing at a very high level. In his last six games, Manning has averaged 310 passing yards with 13 TDs and four INTs.

And the Patriots’ offense should rebound, creating an expected shootout.

“Everybody is going throw in a bad game now and then,” Stoneback said. “It’s rare for them to have two bad ones in a row. And they’re at home.”

      SMALLEST TOTAL OF THE WEEK

San Francisco at Washington (3.5, 37.5)

This total has already dropped two points. The Redskins couldn’t score against the Bills, and now their best remaining receiver, tight end Fred Davis, is in a walking boot.

      The 49ers allow a league-low 15.3 points per game.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Washington Capitals (-195, 5.5)

After a spotless start to the season, the Washington Capitals hit a couple of speed bumps on their western road swing.

They ran into a hot Oilers team Thursday night and fell 2-1 even though they had three power play opportunities in the third period. Then they were smoked 7-4 by Vancouver on Saturday, allowing three goals in the final frame.

“You go off and you win seven in a row whatever and maybe things get swept under the rug a little bit because you’re kind of rolling,” Mike Knuble told reporters following the loss. “Always a good reality check at the beginning of the year. You’ve got to be on every night. Teams are ready for you, you’re not going to sneak up on anybody.”

Anaheim is getting close to desperation mode having dropped six of their last seven. The Ducks are averaging fewer than two goals per game and have managed 20 or fewer shots in each of their last three. That’ll change Tuesday and there’s great value on the upset here.

        Pick: Ducks

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames (+110, 5.5)

The Calgary Flames have won two straight to get back to the .500 mark, but they still have a lot of work to do.

They were outshot 18-29 in Friday’s 3-1 win over Columbus and were sloppy in their own end for most of the night. In truth, they were lucky to come away with two points.

“In order for our team to move up in the standings, you need every element of your team firing on all cylinders,” Tanguay said. “We haven’t been firing as well as we’d like. We’re contributing at times, but not the level we should be at.”

Some might argue that Calgary doesn’t have the depth or offensive punch to put together lengthy winning streaks. The Flames will need to be a lot better in all three zones to keep it close with Vancouver.

        Pick: Canucks

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

          HOT TEAM: San Jose Sharks

The Sharks usually wait until the postseason to disappoint their fans, but this year, with perhaps as much talent as any team in the Western Conference, they stumbled right out of the box.

San Jose dropped three games in a four-day span earlier this month, and found itself surprisingly in last place on Oct. 17.

But a road trip to the East Coast has been an effective elixir, as the Sharks have rolled up five straight wins headed into Monday’s tilt versus the Rangers in New York.

San Jose offense's has turned the corner on this trip, and after Saturday's 3-2 win over the Islanders in New York, Joe Pavelski had seven goals, Joe Thornton had eight points, and the Sharks were 6-3.

Perhaps the biggest key, moving forward for bettors, is the Sharks’ conditioning. In this win streak, San Jose has shown no fatigue, sweeping two sets of Friday-Saturday, back-to-back games. Keep that in mind.

          COLD TEAM: Boston Bruins

No surprise here, as the Stanley Cup hangover has hit Beantown. And perhaps this one may last even longer than most, when you consider that the Bruins played three seven-game series in the postseason, and then partied for two months leading into training camp.

Headed into Tuesday’s tilt versus Ottawa, the Bruins had lost three in a row and four of the last five. They were swept by the rival Canadiens in a three-day span, ending Saturday, and managed just three goals in those two games.

Surprisingly, despite having one of the deepest goaltending situations in the league, Boston isn't exactly dominating in the nets. Tuukka Rask took the loss on Saturday and Tim Thomas took the loss on Thursday.

          OVER PLAY: Philadelphia Flyers

When they acquired goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov in the summer, it seemed -- once and for all -- that the Flyers’ biggest problem had been solved. They finally had an anchor in net, and a superstar to play behind that deep, dominating set of defensemen.

Well, that lockdown, stifling system they had planned on still may happen. But for now, Bryzgalov is inconsistent, captain Chris Pronger is out with an eye injury and pucks are soaring into the net during Philadelphia’s games.

Saturday’s 5-1 win over Carolina was Philadelphia’s seventh consecutive over, and eighth in the last nine games. In many instances, the total wasn’t even close. On Thursday, versus Winnipeg, there were 17 goals scored, eight by the Flyers.

Offensively, Philadelphia’s doing their part as well. Jaromir Jagr, the summer’s other big addition, had five goals and Claude Giroux had 15 points heading into Wednesday’s game at Buffalo.

          UNDER PLAY: Dallas Stars

Count the Stars among the surprise teams in the Western Conference. Without Brad Richards, and despite the bitter taste in the franchise's mouth for missing the playoffs at the final horn last season, Dallas has rebounded nicely.

And the Stars have done it with defense.

In their last six games, Dallas has gone 4-1-1 under, and it allowed two goals or less in five of those games. They ended Saturday’s action in first place in the Pacific Division.

Goaltender Kari Lehtonen has been tremendous. He stopped 31 shots in a 3-1 win over New Jersey on Saturday, and is now 8-1 with a 1.75 goals-against average. Sounds like the right recipe for unders.

          SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** Despite a loss to Toronto on Saturday, the Penguins are still cruising right along without Sidney Crosby, and now they have some time to catch their breath. While they have to make another West Coast trip in November, the fact of the matter is that Sunday began a stretch in which Pittsburgh will play just four games in 16 days. Expect some fresh legs on the Penguins bench, when they take on the Sharks in San Jose on Thursday.

** Give credit to the Jets for hanging in there on the road. Winnipeg is in the midst of a seven-game trip away from home, which continues Monday at Florida. Through Saturday, they were 1-1 and had recovered from a brutal start overall by going 2-2 in four games, three of which came against playoff teams from last season. The Jets won’t return home until Nov. 10, when they host the Panthers.
