College football odds: Week 10 opening line report

Coach Les Miles has played it safe. Despite his potential to pop off in front of the microphone, not even Miles is confident enough to speak out of turn as his No. 1 LSU Tigers prepare to meet No. 2 Alabama in this season’s Game of the Year on Saturday.

“We will be challenged,” Miles said. “And we look forward to meeting that challenge."

And so after a bye week, in which we had to endure some ho-hum matchups while the Tigers and Crimson Tide rested, it is indeed LSU-Alabama Week. And the top spot in the BCS hangs in the balance as college football turns its eyes toward Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Alabama coach Nick Saban has been equally politically correct. Now, he’s less likely to make mistakes in press conference, so it’s been status quo with the Crimson Tide.

“It's everybody's choice to be responsible,” he said, “and be ready to play.”

Well, here’s thinking that both teams indeed will be ready. Both teams are 8-0 overall, and 5-0 in the SEC. Both teams have their sights set on Atlanta, for the league title game, and New Orleans, for the BCS title game.

But only one, for sure, will make the former. And it’s likely that only one will make the latter. Which is why this premier, primetime matchup figures to gain perhaps the most action of any game all year in Nevada.

“We expect it to be pretty big at the windows, yes,” Pete Korner of Esportclub, LLC, in Las Vegas told ***********. “This is a national championship style game. The winner will have a great shot, and there’s so much interest. With it being at night, too, you figure to get more action.”

Terry Cox, the director of the race and sportsbook at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno, concurs.

“Most likely, it will be the most heavily bet game of the year, to date,” Cox told ***********. “And it will be a big weekend overall, especially with the Breeders Cup, too.”

With so much interest in this game, Korner has kept a close eye on this game for weeks. He and his line consultant group, Sports Club, originally recommended a line of Alabama -5 to the sportsbooks two weeks ago. Some used that line, and it was immediately pounded with LSU money last week. The line dipped to Alabama -4, as a result, but it eventually settled back at -5.

“Should be a great game, and we figure to still see LSU money in the early going,” Korner said. “But we like the line. It’s at now where we had it originally, so we’ll sit back and see what they do with it.”

And with that, let’s take a look at some of next week’s other marquee games:

Florida State (-16) at Boston College

Now that the national spotlight is off the Seminoles, Florida State has actually recovered into a moderately successful season ... depending on your standards. But Florida State has always been known to lay an egg on Thursday night, dating back to the 1990s, so the Eagles may have a shot here in the cold of Boston. But not much of one.

“Florida State is playing really well, and I see this going up before it comes down,” Korner said. “We have no respect for Boston College at this point.”

    USC (-21) at Colorado

Let’s throw this game in the mix because it’s a Friday Night Special, it will be bet heavily, and it will be interesting to see how the Trojans respond after their overtime thriller vs. Stanford.

“Colorado is still not showing anything this year,” said Korner, who recommended Trojans -23 to his clients. “USC can score, they still showed well in the loss to Stanford, and this line may even go up.”

The Wynn opened at Colorado +21 but the game was bet up over the 3-TD spread pretty quickly.

    Texas A&M (+14) at Oklahoma

The Sooners got back on track vs. Kansas State, and while they still need a lot of help to get back into the title game mix, they should still have enough motivation to get by an inconsistent Aggies team with ease.

“We just didn’t want to get caught short here,” Korner said. “Maybe we overvalued Oklahoma here a little. I mean Texas A&M is good, not great, but they’re capable of covering, certainly. But Oklahoma is in the must-win category now, and the line’s only going to go up from here.”

Korner’s line consultant group, Sports Club, recommended Sooners -16 but the Wynn went with just a 14-point spread on this one.

Kansas State (+21.5) at Oklahoma State

Oh boy, the Wildcats were exposed vs. Oklahoma, and more of the same should be in store versus the Cowboys, who figure to be the No. 2 team in the BCS next week, ahead of the LSU-Alabama loser.

“Another big number, and another big game that we couldn’t be caught short on,” Korner said. “This will be a high-scoring game, and Kansas State can score. But I see no problems here for Oklahoma State. None.”

    Northwestern (+19) at Nebraska

Not much of a game here, but there should be plenty of points and it will be interesting to see how Nebraska responds now that they are in prime position for a Big Ten title in their first year in the league.

“The players are betting Nebraska every week. There’s no doubt about it,” said Korner, who sent out Cornhuskers -21. “This is another big favorite, so let’s see what they do with this line. Nebraska is on the outside looking in for the national picture. But they have a chance at the conference title, so why be cheap here with them?”

This one was bet down to 17.5 Sunday night at the Wynn.

    Stanford (-21) at Oregon State

On a national stage, hey, the Cardinal won a tough game at USC. Was it pretty? No. Was the defense weak? Yes. But remember, this is Stanford and Andrew Luck. Which means the money is going to come in on them, and hard. So, the pros have to be prepared.

“Stanford, on the road with Luck, shouldn’t have any problems,” Korner said. “Strange game for them vs. USC, but Stanford will be back to normal here.”

Notre Dame (-13.5) at Wake Forest

Always interesting to see where the pros stand on Notre Dame. Not much glamour in this matchup, but the Irish need wins at this point, and need to continue to build momentum. And a big win over an ACC team would certainly help.

“I really wanted to go high here, and maybe I overvalued them, but it’s Notre Dame, and they will draw money,” Korner said. “They’re coming off a win, not a great win vs. Navy, but a win nonetheless. I expect another big performance, and the line, I feel, will be a bit kicked up from here by gametime.”

Korner went higher (+14) than the Wynn’s opening number, but only by a half point.

    South Carolina (+4.5) at Arkansas

The Gamecocks have played in the shadow of the Tigers and Crimson Tide all year, and rightfully so. They are boring on offense, and often times inconsistent on defense. But Steve Spurrier’s crew is finding ways to get it done, and this should be a nice little SEC sidebar to the big game.

“This is a good game in the SEC and this is a fair number,” Korner said, who sent out Razorbacks -6. “As far as line movements the rest of this week, I expect it to be steady.”

    Oregon (-16.5) at Washington

Surely, the Ducks were watching USC score points all over the place versus Stanford, and thought they could do even better. They’re probably right, but we will have to wait for Nov. 12 for that matchup. For now, it’s a road date at the Huskies, and plenty of chalk.

“Again, another game with a big favorite on the road. But Oregon can score, and they have to win,” Korner said. “This is one of those times, when you can probably take a flyer on a big dog here at home, but I’d rather be wrong with Oregon and get the chance to pull for them when it gets late. In a situation like this, Oregon is going to cover the number more times than not.”

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Northern Illinois at Toledo Rockets: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Northern Illinois Huskies at Toledo Rockets (-7.5, 67), 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2

These two MAC powers collided last year in early November in a game that ultimately decided the West Division. Northern Illinois, favored by 11.5, dismantled visiting Toledo 65-30, behind a 422-yard rushing attack.

Needless to say, the Rockets (5-3, 5-3 ATS) are out for revenge Tuesday and are in the right place for it. Toledo is 40-22 ATS at the Glass Bowl since 2000.

Northern Illinois (5-3, 3-5 ATS) is 1-5 ATS in its last six trips to the Glass Bowl.

                THE LINE

The Rockets opened as 7-point favorites Sunday at the Las Vegas Wynn, but it was up to 7.5 with even a few 8s offshore by Monday. Toledo has covered five straight games as a home favorite and six of seven overall when favored.

                THE TOTAL

Oddsmakers expect a shootout and opened the total at 67. The Huskies average 38.5 points and surrender 32.50 points. The
Rockets average 36.50 points and surrender 25 per game.

The Over is 19-6-1 in the Rockets’ last 26 games as a home favorite.

                RECENT HISTORY

The Huskies are coming off a 31-30 win over Buffalo on Oct. 22 and have won three straight overall. They have conference wins over Kent State and Western Michigan, but a loss at a bad Central Michigan team is an eyebrow-raiser.

Toledo played a difficult non-conference schedule, losing to Ohio State, Boise State and Syracuse. The Rockets’ own the 38th toughest schedule in the nation, according to the Sagarin Ratings. Northern Illinois is 74th.

The Rockets knocked off defending MAC champion Miami (OH), 49-28, on Oct. 22, have won four straight and are the MAC’s only unbeaten team in conference play.

                STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

The Rockets are extremely balanced (186.75 rushing, 251.63 passing). They lead the MAC in turnover margin, pass efficiency and punt returns and are allowing less than 20 points per game in conference play.

The Huskies boast the MAC’s best offense, averaging 463.38 yards. They get it done on the ground, averaging 244.25 yards rushing. Their defense, however, has struggled, surrendering more than 44 points three times this season, including 48 to Central Michigan in early October.

                QB BREAKDOWN

Toledo coach Tim Beckman has stuck with a two-quarterback rotation of junior Austin Dantin (10 TDs, 1 INT) and sophomore Terrance Owens (6 TDs, 2 INTs). Owens played the entire game in last year’s loss to Northern Illinois, completing 18 of 38 passes for 186 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Chandler Harnish, the Huskies’ senior QB, is arguably the best signal-caller in the MAC. He’s completing 62.8 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. But Harnish is much more dangerous on the ground. He leads Northern Illinois in rushing, averaging 7.9 yards per carry.

                INJURY REPORT

Neither team is reporting any impactful injuries.

                WEATHER

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-50s with light winds and only a slight chance of precipitation.

                TRENDY

Northern Illinois is 3-9-1 ATS in last 13 games against Toledo.

Over is 9-4 in Huskies last 13.

The Rockets are 0-4 ATS in last four games after a bye.

Temple at Ohio: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temple Owls at Ohio Bobcats (+3.5, 45.5)

It’s the week of the MAC with the conference in action every day, including Wednesday’s showdown between the Temple Owls and Ohio Bobcats.

Ohio has won back-to-back contests against Temple and is 3-1 SU and 3-0-1 ATS in their four meetings, going back to 2007. Both teams are coming off a bye week and looking for the inside track to take the Mid-American Conference East Division crown.

                    Line moves

Temple opened as a 4.5-point road favorite but has been bet down to 3.5 as of Tuesday afternoon. The total opened at 46 points and has been bet up to 47.

                    Temple of doom

The Owls head into this weekday matchup ranked second in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 10 points per game. Temple has outscored its opponents 230-80 and has taken the fight to teams like Penn State and Maryland, building a solid 6-2 ATS record.

However, after pitching back-to-back shutouts over Ball State and Buffalo, the Owls defense leaked 13 points to Bowling Green, and wasn’t able to play catch-up on the offensive end, losing 13-10 on Oct. 22.

A huge cog in the Temple scoring attack is running back Bernard Pierce, who leads the MAC with 951 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. But, Pierce is nursing a tender hamstring suffered two weeks ago and has been held out of practice since October 14, with his status for Wednesday listed as questionable. Pierce hobbled for 107 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Falcons.

Despite an injury to his star back and pressure from fans to throw the ball more, Temple first-year coach Steve Addazio wants to stick to the ground this week. He still has No. 2 back Matt Brown, who has rushed for over 100 yards in three straight games.

The Owls are third last in the MAC with only 133.3 yards passing per game. Temple has called 408 of its 541 total offensive plays – more than 75 percent - on the ground this season.

"When you get in those third and longs, they're not real manageable," Addazio told the Philadelphia Enquirer, talking about the dependency on the run. "Your percentage of conversions on third and long is terrible. It's going to be terrible."

                    The Cat came back

Ohio snapped a two-game skid with a 37-20 win over Akron on October 22, after falling to Ball State and Buffalo – two teams shutout by Temple. The victory over the Zips also marked the first time the Bobcats have covered in their last five games, improving to 3-5 ATS.

"We're going to have to win out I think to be in the game," Ohio coach Frank Solich told reporters after the Akron game. "So we have four more to go in order to get that done and a huge one next week with Temple coming to our place."

Ohio has perhaps one the most balanced teams in the MAC. The Bobcats are second in the MAC in offense, averaging 449.5 yards per outings – including 556 total yards against the Zips. On the other side of the ball, Ohio sits second in the conference in total defense, limiting opponents to just 117.38 rushing yards per game.

Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton will get put to the test against the Owls pass defense. He’s thrown for 1,969 yards and 17 touchdowns, but has also been picked off four times in the last three games after throwing just one interception in the Bobcats’ first five contests.

Turnovers have plagued Ohio, leading the MAC with 14 fumbles. Against Akron, the Bobcats coughed the ball up twice on fumbles.

"Three turnovers again today, that's not what we're after, but we were able to overcome that," Solich told the media. "There's a lot of times you don't overcome three turnovers."

                    Trends

                    * Owls are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four meetings.
                    * Owls are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 road games.
                    * Bobcats are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six games following a bye week.

Where the action is: Mid-week football line moves

For our weekly look at football lines on the move, we chatted up Todd Fuhrman, race and sportsbook analyst at Caesar's in Las Vegas. Here are some thoughts about why these odds are jumping around.

                        NCAAF

                        LSU at Alabama -5 ---> -4.5

Right now most shops are sending out Alabama -4.5 and Fuhrman isn’t so sure the action is moving the right way.

“Public, public, public,” Fuhrman says. “For whatever reason the betting public believes they're pulling a quick one on the books grabbing LSU with the points and I'm not sure I see it quite the same way.

"Nick Saban off a bye playing at home with the best player on the field in Heisman hopeful Trent Richardson seems an awfully intriguing public fade in my opinion.”

*Also, if you haven't already noticed, we're following this game's line moves all week with this story. Check back for the latest as the kickoff nears.

                        Texas Tech at Texas -10.5 ---> -14

Texas Tech is 3-3 against the spread in its last six and is just coming off an embarrassing outright loss at home to Iowa State as fat 15.5-point favorites. Can you blame early bettors for jumping on the Longhorns?

"If anyone out there has figured out Texas Tech please let me know," Fuhrman says. "This team needed late heroics to squeak by Nevada early in the year yet somehow goes into Norman and smacks the Sooners. Last week's loss is still a head scratcher since we figured they'd be flat against Iowa State, but losing 41-7 at home had a major wow factor. Texas is Texas and while I'm still not buying the Horns as a consistent double-digit chalk in conference, the bettors are telling us otherwise."

                        Vanderbilt at Florida -11 ---> -13.5

Vanderbilt has dropped two of its last three, but has also managed to cover the number in three straight. Still, bettors don't seem convinced the Commodores can hang with a battle-tested Florida club.

"The Gators have run through an SEC gauntlet lately, playing the conference's best teams in succession, Fuhrman says. John Brantley appears to be healthier than he's been and Vandy probably was overvalued by bookmakers on the opener based on their recent home results.

"I'll be impressed if the Commodores answer the bell in the Swamp Saturday after the heartbreaking loss to Arkansas one week ago."

                        NFL

                        Seattle at Dallas -13 ---> -11.5

This was supposed to be "the year" for the Cowboys, right? So far, they've been nothing but a headache for bettors, going just 2-4 against the number over their last six. The real issue here is Seattle is just as inconsistent at 3-3-1 against the number.

"I'm not sure what I'd call the Cowboys effort Sunday night but it sure wasn't one that makes you believe they're legitimate NFC contenders," Fuhrman says about Dallas' 34-7 blowout loss at Philadelphia. "Seattle has shown nothing to the betting public over the last few weeks. However, in this instance the double-digit points seem attractive given Dallas' sluggish effort in Week 8."

                        Miami at Kansas City -5 ---> -4

For all you bettors that left the Chiefs for dead when Jamaal Charles went down, take notice. Kansas City has covered the number in five straight games and better than 71 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were siding with the Chiefs as of Wednesday evening.

"Congrats to the K.C. Chiefs for making the AFC west a three horse race," Fuhrman says. "I'll be even more impressed if they go out and handle business against an NFL doormat in Miami following two huge wins over their division rivals. Situational handicappers will back Miami here and you see that in the move, while the betting public will be late arrivals on the K.C. bandwagon eager to lay points with a pedestrian offense."

                        Denver at Oakland -7 ---> -8.5

Well, Tebowmania sure was fun while it lasted. While the Denver quarterback has turned from Broncos savior to whipping boy, this week's line has followed suit.

"Tebow factor in reverse is what we're seeing here," Fuhrman says. "The luster has apparently worn off Denver and bettors are eager to oppose the Broncos' offense with a Carson Palmer led Raider team that will most likely be without the services of Darren McFadden. If the Raiders are serious about winning their division, they should be eager to beat up on the Broncos but do they have the firepower to do so?"

Florida State at Boston College: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida State Seminoles at Boston College Eagles (+14.5, 44)

                          THE STORY
: Having No. 3 back under center has made all the difference for Florida State. E.J. Manuel aims to lead the surging Seminoles to a fourth straight win Thursday night against Boston College, which needs another strong finish to extend its bowl streak to 13 seasons. After going through a rough patch, Florida State has hit its stride thanks to Manuel, who has stabilized the offense since returning from a sprained shoulder three weeks ago. The Eagles, meanwhile, have struggled from the start. Boston College’s 28-17 win in Maryland was its first victory over an FBS opponent this season.

                          TV: ESPN 8:00 p.m. ET

LINE MOVES: Florida State opened at -15.5 and was bet down to 14.5. The total has remained steady at 44 points.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (5-3, 3-2 ACC, 4-4 ATS): The Seminoles have won three straight by a combined score of 116-32. Manuel completed a pass to eight different receivers while throwing for 321 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-0 win over North Carolina State. Florida State also forced a season-high three turnovers last week and is now eighth in the nation in total defense (275.6 ypg).

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (2-6, 1-4 ACC, 3-5 ATS): Sophomore RB Rolandan Finch ran for 243 yards and two touchdowns in the win over woeful Maryland. Finch is playing because ACC preseason Player of the Year Montel Harris is out for the season with a knee injury. Harris’ absence is one reason the Eagles rank 107th in scoring offense (19.9 ppg). The defense (88th in the nation – 422 ypg) is led by star linebacker Luke Kuechly, who had 12 tackles and an interception last week.

                          EXTRA POINTS:

                          1) The Seminoles have scored at least 30 points in five straight games for the first time since 2002.

                          2) Boston College needs to win its final four games to become bowl eligible. It qualified last season by winning its final five games.

                          3) Kuechly (130) is on pace to break the NCAA single-season record of 193 tackles set by Texas Tech’s Lawrence Flugence in 1992.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Seminoles are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.
                          * Road team is 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.
                          * Underdog is 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings.

PREDICTION: Florida State 31, Boston College 14 – Manuel is heating up and the Eagles are 96th against the pass (252.3 ypg).

                            Armadillo's Write-Up

                            Week 10

                            Friday's games

Central Michigan lost five of last seven games, winning last week when woeful Akron went for 2-point conversion and win on last play of game; Chippewas won three of last four series games, but teams haven't played since '07. Six of Central's last seven games went over total; five of Kent's last six games stayed under. Kent's defense is improving, giving up 10-9 points in last two games, after losing first five games vs I-A teams by an average score of 32-8. Central is 1-5 on road, allowing 31+ points in four of last five- they were outscored 50-20 in second half of last two games.

Colorado is terrible, losing last six games (0-6 vs spread) by an average of 47-15, losing last four games by 41-28-43-34 points. Buffaloes allowed an average of 291 rushing yards in last three games. Would expect USC to pound ball and wear talent-thin Colorado down; Trojans just played tough games with Notre Dame/Stanford, losing 56-48 in OT to Cardinal at home six days ago, so they've got to be little flat here. Pac-12 favorites of 20+ points are 7-1 vs spread this season. USC is 2-1 on road, beating Cal/Notre Dame, losing 43-22 at Arizona State- they're 3-2 against the spread as a favorite this season. USC at Colorado: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

USC Trojans at Colorado Buffaloes (+21, 58.5)

                              THE STORY
: USC gave up a school-record 56 points in its gut-wrenching triple-overtime loss to No. 3 Stanford last weekend. Now, the Trojans, who dropped to 64th nationally in scoring defense at 26.8 points per game, look to bounce back with a win at Colorado. The Buffaloes have yet to win a conference game in their first-ever Pac-12 season and they are riding a six-game losing streak for the first time since 2006, when they started the year 0-6.

This is USC’s first Friday night game since 1999 and it’s Colorado’s first-ever game on Friday. The Trojans lead this all-time series 5-0, but these teams haven’t met since 2002.

                              TV: ESPN

LINE MOVES: Southern Cal opened as high as -22 and has been bet down to -21. The total opened at 56.5 points and has been bet up to 58.5.

ABOUT USC (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12, 4-4 ATS): If there was one positive for the Trojans to take from the loss to Stanford, it was the offense’s continued dominance. Southern Cal scored at least 30 points for the fourth consecutive game and fifth time this season. Running back Curtis McNeal rushed for a career-high 145 yards and two touchdowns and wideout Robert Woods kept his outstanding season going with 89 yards and a touchdown. The sophomore is tied for second nationally with 10.1 receptions per game and is on pace to break USC’s single-season receptions record.

ABOUT COLORADO (1-8, 0-5 Pac-12, 2-7 ATS): After back-to-back blowout losses to Oregon and Arizona State, the Buffaloes’ tough Pac-12 schedule continues this Friday. Colorado is struggling on both sides of the ball, ranking in the bottom 30 nationally in both total offense and total defense, while allowing 38 points per game. Quarterback Tyler Hansen is one of the few bright spots. The senior moved into fifth place on Colorado’s all-time career passing yards list after throwing for 285 yards and a touchdown in a 48-14 loss at Arizona State.

                              EXTRA POINTS:

                              1. USC quarterback Matt Barkley needs 108 yards of total offense to move into third on the school’s career total offense list.

                              2. The forecast in Boulder calls for snow this weekend, and temperatures are expected to be in the 30s Friday evening. That’s extra cold for kids from California.

                              3. The Buffaloes have lost their last four games by an average of 36.5 points.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Trojans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as road favorites.
                              * Buffaloes are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games as home underdogs.
                              * Under is 6-2 in Trojans' last eight games as favorites.
                              * Over is 8-3 in Buffaloes' last 11 games as home underdogs.

PREDICTION: USC 45, Colorado 20. The Trojans might struggle initially to get over such a tough loss, but in the end they’ll blow past a weak Buffaloes defense.
