Sunday’s betting tips: Another shootout in Pittsburgh?

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Panthers are 5-1 ATS in their last five overall and 5-0 ATS in their last five home games.

NFL: The over is 6-0 in the Colts’ last six overall and 4-1 in the Titans’ last five overall.

NFL: The 49ers are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 4-0-1 ATS in their last five home games.

NHL: The Kings are 5-1 in their last six overall and 5-1 in their last six road games.

CFL: Calgary is 4-1 ATS in its last five against teams with winning SU records.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Dolphins are 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 overall and 0-3-1 ATS in their last four road games.

NFL: The over is 1-6 in the Jaguars’ last seven overall and 1-5 in the Texans’ last six against the AFC.

NFL: The Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.

NHL: The Blue Jackets are 3-13 in their last 16 home games dating back to last season.

CFL: Montreal is 0-4 ATS in its last four overall.

    Key stat

150.9 – Number of rushing yards allowed per game by the Indianapolis Colts, second worst in the NFL ahead of only St. Louis and well behind any other team. Something will have to give when Titans’ running back Chris Johnson faces this porous run defense. Johnson has a mere 268 yards on 93 carriers (2.9 average) this season and he has rushed for more than 53 yards just once in six games.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

New England Patriots’ running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis is listed as questionable for Sunday’s showdown at Pittsburgh due to a toe injury. He was limited in practice all week but is not expected to miss the game.

A bigger area of concern could be New England’s secondary, where Ras-I Dowling has been placed on injured reserve. The Pats released Leigh Bodden on Friday, meaning they only have two defensive backs (Devin McCourty and Kyle Arrington) on the roster with significant starting experience. They are dead last in the league in passing defense, giving up 322.2 yards per game.

    Biggest games on the slate

New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers (2.5, 52.5)

    Notable quotable

“I don't think we've diminished our start by any means. I think the way we approach the season is in four quarters. In the first quarter, we obviously came out 4-0. The second quarter, we're obviously 1-2 and we want to be able to get to .500 with that.” – Detroit Lions’ defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in the wake of his team’s current two-game losing streak at the hands of San Francisco and Atlanta. Detroit visits Tim Tebow and Denver on Sunday.

    Tips and notes

Steelers’ receiver Hines Ward is questionable with an ankle injury for Sunday’s game against New England. He is not expected to play. Still, Pittsburgh may be able to do its part in another PIT-NE clash going over the total. Seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams have gone over and the over is 5-0 in the last five in Pittsburgh. The Patriots have scored at least 30 points in five of six outings this season.

There’s a lot going on in Miami right now, and not just because Tony Sparano is on the hot seat as the Dolphins are in hot pursuit of Andrew Luck. They ruled out both running back Daniel Thomas and cornerback Vontae Davis from Sunday’s game against the Giants. Wideout Brandon Marshall doesn’t seem to concerned. He offered a borderline guarantee on Twitter, saying, “"To: Media When we win Sunday please don't say the Giants didn't take us serious."

The Ottawa Senators are the only team in the NHL that has allowed more than 40 goals this season, and they have let in a whopping 43. Sure, they have played 11 games (more than most squads), but they still own a league-worst 3.91 GAA. As a result, a recent over trend could continue when Ottawa hosts Toronto. The over is 7-1-1 in the Sens’ last nine home games and 5-0 in the Maple Leafs’ last five overall.

      Armadillo's Write-Up

      Week 18

Calgary (9-7) @ Montreal (10-6)-- Alouettes (+1) lost 38-31 at Calgary in Week 8; they've won four of last five games but failed to cover four in a row- they're 2-5 in last seven as a favorite. Stampeders lost last three on road, by 19-2-2 points, after winning first five road games this year. Weird that Calgary is 9-7 but has only been an underdog twice this year, and both of those games were decided by two points. Five of last seven Montreal games stayed under total.

Canadian Bacon: Week 18 CFL odds and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Stampeders at Montreal Alouettes (-4.5, 56)

The Alouettes’ unity is being questioned. Running back Brandon Whittaker leads the CFL but feels he could get more touches. Wideout Kerry Watkins has been dropping too many balls and is still complaining the offense is too focused on slotbacks Jamal Richardson and S.J. Green.

The Alouettes spoiled a golden opportunity to secure first place in the east by collapsing in the fourth quarter against Winnipeg last week and now coach Marc Trestman is being scrutinized by some of his players.

The Stampeders, who stand third in the West, must win to keep hopes of hosting a playoff game in November. Drew Tate, who has been taking over a struggling Henry Burris at pivot, should be able to exploit the weaknesses of the Alouettes secondary especially with the return of Ken-Yon Rambo (Achilles).

      Pick: Calgary

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Sunday’s best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Columbus Blue Jackets (115, 5)

The Blue Jackets are not just the worst team in the NHL. They are looking like by far the worst team in the NHL.

Columbus owns a mere three points through 10 games, at least twice as few as every other team in the league. The team is 1-8-1 heading into Saturday night’s game at Chicago. Although the Jackets managed to beat Detroit on Tuesday, they followed that up with a 4-1 loss at Buffalo on Thursday.

Look no further than an obvious culprit—the power play—to discover what’s ailing Columbus. It is dead last in the NHL in penalty killing (a horrific 64.7 percent) and second to last in power-play conversions (9.8 percent).

Anaheim (1-3 in its last four prior to Saturday night) has not exactly been setting the world on fire. Still, the Ducks have at least been competitive. Two of their last three losses came by one goal (including one in a shootout) and the other came by two.

        Pick: Ducks

Los Angeles Kings at Colorado Avalanche (-103, 5)

Los Angeles is off to a fine start this season. Heading into a Saturday night game at Phoenix, the Kings are 6-2-1 and sit one point back of Dallas (having played one fewer game than the Stars) in the Pacific Division.

Their road record is almost perfect, having won three games in addition to a shootout loss at New Jersey. L.A. takes a three-game road winning streak during a stretch of five victories in six games into Sunday’s contest at Colorado.

The Avalanche had the benefit of an off day at home on Saturday, but they do not have much else going for them. Colorado is coming off a 3-1 home loss to Edmonton on Friday and it has now dropped two in a row and three of four.

Goals could be hard to come by in this one, especially for the Avalanche. The under is 6-1 in L.A.’s last seven overall and 6-1 in Colorado’s last seven home games.

Kings’ goalie Jonathan Quick posted three consecutive shutouts between October 18 and October 22. He boasts a 6-0-1 record to go along with a 1.12 GAA and .962 save percentage

        Pick: Kings

            Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 517 contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

            4) Seattle 131
            3) New England 150
            2) Dallas 227
            1) Detroit 229 27) St Louis 57

            28) Indianapolis 52
            29) Jacksonville 51
            30) Denver 42
            31) Tennessee 38
            32) Arizona 36

            ********************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday......

            13) Wisconsin had their hearts torn out a second straight Saturday, as Ohio State scored on a 40-yard pass with 0:20 left to stun the Badgers 33-29. It is one thing to run the score up on weakling Indiana, but when Wisconsin had tough games to win this month, they folded like a cheap suit.

            12) 30-40 years from now, players/coaches from this year's Vanderbilt club will shake their heads over how they lost to Arkansas Saturday. This is the kind of game downtrodden programs screw up, retarding program's progess. Vandy led 28-20 and had the ball inside the Arkansas 10 when a Commodore fumble was run back 94 yards for a Razorback TD. Then the Vandy kicker missed a 27-yard FG with 0:08 to seal a brutal 31-28 defeat.

            11) Every game Georgia wins helps Boise State's case with the BCS, so Broncos had to be happy Dawgs survived their horrendous special teams play to edge Florida 24-20. Georgia has now won six games in a row.

            10) Underdogs continue to dominate the Clemson-Georgia Tech series, as the Tigers lost yet again in Atlanta, their first loss of the season.

            9) Akron scored on the last play of the game to cut Central Michigan's lead to 23-22, then went for two to win the game but lost instead. Its a gutless move by the coach to go for the win right there, unless they have an awful kicker. Just play overtime and give your kids the best chance to win.

            8) Texas A&M lost another game they led by 10+ points at the half- they lsot 38-31 in OT to a Missouri team they led by 11 points at the half.

            7) Illinois has now covered 12 of its last 14 games as a road underdog, but a shaky pass interference call on a 4th down play with 1:31 left gave Penn State a 10-7 win at snowy Happy Valley.

            6) Rutgers led erratic West Virginia 31-21 at the half, then didn't score in the second half and lost 41-31, much to the delight of the lous table behind me in the SouthPoint sportsbook. Mountaineers play lousy defense.

            5) So does Baylor; Bears gave up 327 rushing yards on just 27 carries in a dreadful 59-24 drubbing at Oklahoma State. Game was 35-nil at the half.

            4) Tennessee has now failed to cover their last eight games as a home dog.

            3) Texas Tech beat Oklahoma in Norman last week, then came home and laid an egg Saturday, losing 41-7 at home to Iowa State. Handling success obviously isn't one of their strong suits.

            2) Iowa Hawkeyes are now 0-3 on the road after a hideous 22-21 loss to a lousy Minnesota team. Sad to say but Iowa will be in a bowl game.

            1) Stanford-USC was a tremendous game that kept the crowd in the sports book here on the edge of their seats. Think the game was so intense that it will take a lot of both sides for the immediate future.
