                      ALATEX NEWSLETTER

                      Dixie Football Forecast NFL

Atlanta at TAMPA BAY(-7 38.5) As bad as things have gone for the Bucs this season, they still have a slim chance to make the playoffs. At 7-7, they are still alive, but they must win their next two games. Tampa has a favorite whipping boy in town this week, as they have dominated the Falcons recently. They beat Atlanta 31-10 this year without Michael Vick and 20-6 and 34-10 a year ago with Vick in the lineup. Despite their lack of success this year, the Tampa Bay defense still has allowed a league-low 201 points on the season. Vick showed last week at Indy that he still has no clue for the cover-2 defense as the Colts held the Falcons to just 154 total yards. Tampa dominated the Texans last week, winning 16-3 on a yardage edge of 398-107. Look for the Bucs to continue their dominance of the Falcons and stay alive for another week. 2-star Tampa Bay

Kansas City(-2.5 54.5) at MINNESOTA. The Vikings are now 2-6 in their last 8 games after losing at Chicago last week. They are now tied with Green Bay in the NFC North and are facing a must win game against the top team in the NFL. Kansas City is 12-2, but the Chiefs have experienced some drop off in their play recently as well. They are 3-2 in their last 5 games with the wins against Oakland, Detroit and San Diego. Kansas City’s run defense is a huge question mark for the Super Bowl aspirations of the Chiefs. This game will be decided by turnovers. Both teams have been very good at forcing turnovers all season, as Kansas City has 32 takeaways and Minnesota has 30. Minnesota has been giving the ball away too much recently, however and that will cost them this week again. 1-star Kansas City

New England(-3 35) at NYJETS. It isn’t often in the NFL you can lay 3 points with a 12-2 team against a team with a losing record. I see no reason to go against the Patriots here as they continue to find ways to win games week after week. The difference between these teams on defense is huge, and the Patriots have been solid on offense as well lately. New York hasn’t quit on the season yet, as evidenced by their win over the Steelers last week. New England needs to win here to try to get the home field advantage, and they wont take their division rivals lightly. 1-star New England

Miami at BUFFALO(No line) No line here due to the Dolphins playing on Monday night. This will be an important game for the Dolphins, regardless of their result on Monday night. However, if they lost to the Eagles, this is a huge, must win game for Miami. The Dolphins completely dominated the Bills in Miami in week 4, but they are battling a tough history this week. Miami has had no success in December road games in recent history, and were shut out in the snow in New England two weeks ago. Buffalo still has a solid defense, but the offense has underachieved all season. The Bills will play for pride this week and also out of sheer dislike of the Dolphins. 1-star Buffalo

Baltimore(-3 36.5) at CLEVELAND. The Browns have shown no quit in the last two weeks, losing heartbreakers to the Rams and Broncos. They have another chance to play spoiler this week against the hated Ravens, and the fans and players would love to help knock the Ravens out of the playoffs. Baltimore fell on the road at Oakland last week and blew a golden opportunity. The Ravens have had a very tough time on the road this season, where they are just 2-5SU. Baltimore thoroughly embarrassed the Brown defense in week 2, as Jamal Lewis set the NFL rushing record. That should ensure a solid effort from the Browns this week. 1-star Cleveland

Washington at CHICAGO(-4.5 35) Washington had a tough time on offense in the snow last week, getting shut out at home by the Cowboys. Chicago was able to hold on for its 6th win of the year last week against Minnesota. The Bears defense allowed 393 total yards, but forced 3 turnovers and held the Vikings to just 10 points. Rookie QB Rex Grossman did not have a huge day throwing the ball in his first NFL start, but he didn’t lose the game for the Bears. Look for Chicago to get another win here as Washington may not have much of an effort for Spurrier in these next two games. 1-star Chicago

Cincinnati at St. LOUIS(-7 53) The Rams clinched the NFC West last week with their win over the Seahawks, but they were not on top of their game. St. Louis was actually out gained by the Seahawks, 366-316, and they could not put the game away after building a 21-9 lead. Cincinnati also had a close win last week over the 49ers in which they were not able to put the game away. Cincy had a 14 point lead much of the game, but they allowed 502 total yards to the 49ers offense. Cincy’s defense must have a better effort this week or the Rams will also top the 500-yard mark. St. Louis is playing for home-field advantage in the NFC, and they have been dominant in most games on this field. Look for them to play better this week and beat the Bengals easily. 1-star St. Louis

Detroit at CAROLINA(-10 37) The Panthers squeaked by the Cardinals last week to clinch the NFC South division. However, it was the 4th straight game in which the Panthers have not played well. They were out gained by the Cardinals, 317-298 and allowed 170 yards rushing. Detroit was walloped in Kansas City last week, 45-17, dropping the Lions to 4-10. Carolina should be able to get the win this week, but I don’t expect it to be as easy as it should. Of the Panthers 9 wins this season, 3 have been in overtime, 4 more have been by a FG or less and only one has been by more than 6 points. 1-star Detroit

New Orleans at JACKSONVILLE(-1 43) The Saints stayed alive in the playoff chase last week with their rout of the Giants, 45-7. However the Giants were completely banged up with 9 starters out and this week will be much different for the Saints. New Orleans hasn’t won many of these games in recent years, and the Jaguars are a much improved club. Even in their loss last week, the Jaguars were able to out gain the Patriots, 354-296. Despite their 4-10 record, Jacksonville may be the better team. They have won three straight at home, with wins over Indianapolis and Tampa Bay. 2-star Jacksonville

NY Giants at DALLAS(-11 35.5) Dallas won a key game last week in Washington, improving to 9-5 on the year. The Cowboys can lock into a playoff berth win a win this week against the Giants, which should be no problem. The Giants are banged up, with 9 starters missing last week’s 45-7 loss at New Orleans. Dallas should be able to completely shut down the poor New York offense with Jesse Palmer at QB. Palmer has no chance without his top 3 pass catchers in the lineup and a weak offensive line to boot. Dallas coach Parcells should be able to avoid his team having a letdown this week as well. 1-star Dallas

Tennessee at HOUSTON(no line) No line here due to the status of each team’s starting QB. Tennessee’s Steve McNair and Houston’s David Carr both missed last week’s game, but the difference between their backups is huge. The Titans didn’t miss a beat on offense with Billy Volek, who threw for 295 yards with no turnovers. The Texas had just 107 yards with Dave Ragone under center and have totaled just 224 yards and 3 points in his two starts. Tennessee will crush the Texans again this week unless Carr is able to return to the lineup. Pass for now

San Diego at PITTSBURGH(-6 39.5) The Steelers didn’t do much last week against the Jets, losing 6-0 in the snow. San Diego went with Drew Brees at QB against the Packers, and he led them to 424 total yards of offense. Unfortunately, the Chargers also had 4 turnovers and came up short on a 38-21 score. This week the snow could help the Steelers if they bounce back with a strong effort. San Diego’s top two weapons on offense David Boston and Ladanian Tomlinson are both questionable with injuries, and the cold weather could be a factor. 1-star Pittsburgh

San Francisco at PHILADELPHIA(NO line) No line here due to the Eagles playing on Monday night. San Francisco came up with an inspired effort last week on the road, but they still couldn’t get their first road win of the season in Cincinnati. The 49ers had three turnovers and allowed 41 points to the Bengals. No reason to think that they will come back with a similar effort this week against the Eagles. Win or lose on Monday night, Philly still has a chance at home field in the playoffs and they do not want to have to go to St. Louis. The Eagles have won their last 4 home games by at least a touchdown and the last three have been by at least 13 point each. 1-star Philadelphia

Arizona at SEATTLE(-13 43.5) Seattle cannot win on the road this season, but they have been solid at home with a 7-0 mark. Arizona also cannot win on the road, and the Cardinals haven’t even been competitive. Their road margins this season have been 18, 24, 17, 13, 38, 25, and 36. Seattle won at Arizona in week two by a 38-0 score and a similar result is the only way to foresee it. 1-star Seattle

Denver at INDIANAPOLIS(no line) No line here as the Broncos’ top weapon Clinton Portis left the win over Cleveland with a ankle sprain. He was seen on crutches after the game at it is unknown at this time what his status is for this week. Whether he plays or not, I see the Colts winning here. Denver’s win over Kansas City two weeks ago is their only win against a team with a winning record other than their opening win over the Bengals. The Colts offense is firing on all cylinders right now as Peyton Manning has all of his weapons back and healthy. Indy’s defense did a nice job against the Falcons and Michael Vick last week and if Portis can’t go this week, they should dominate the Denver offense. If Portis does play, the Broncos will still need a huge effort from Jake Plummer to win here. 1-star Indianapolis

                              Tony Wright Sports GOY

Wright is supposed to have his NFL GOY today. On his big plays this year (10*s+) he's 6-1. I don't even look at his lesser plays as he is only mediocre on them. Will post as soon as I get it.
