College football odds: Week 9 opening line report

Call it the calm before the storm. The week before the week. The appetizer.

Whatever Week 9 of the college football season truly is, it won’t include LSU or Alabama. Those two BCS-hungry monsters both have the week off, as they prepare to collide on Nov. 5. (Please see below for more on that).

In the interim, though, we still have plenty of intrigue. Oklahoma and Wisconsin made sure of that as they both tripped up last week, opening the door for several teams to believe they have a shot at the BCS title game.

And one of those teams is Stanford.

“The only thing we control is how we work during the week and how we play on Saturdays and after that, great, if that puts us some place, great. If it doesn’t, so be it. We’re going to play hard, and we’re going to play aggressive and hopefully we’ll continue to get better.”

Those were the words of Stanford first-year coach David Shaw, and he better get used to that line of questioning. As powerful and precise as LSU and Alabama have been, it’s going to be awfully difficult for the Tigers and Crimson Tide to both make the national title game.

Oklahoma, with a soft schedule, seemed like the perfect dance partner ... until it lost. Wisconsin, in the soft Big Ten, seemed like a quality candidate, too ... until it lost. And while Clemson is still unbeaten and scoring points in bunches, not many expect an ACC team to be playing for the crystal ball anytime soon.

That leaves the Oklahoma State, Boise State and the Cardinal, who play host to an improved Southern Cal team Saturday at home.

“Stanford just keeps on cruising. Slow starts sometimes, but then they figure out a way to get it going,” Pete Korner of Esportclub, LLC, in Las Vegas told ***********. “When it comes to making their lines, we continue to have to use the highest number we have.”

Korner installed Stanford as 9-point favorite and so did Johnny Avello at the Wynn Las Vegas, the first book in Nevada to post college football odds every week.

Quarterback Andrew Luck has led the Cardinal to 10 straight wins of 25 points or more.

“He has it all,” Shaw said of Luck, “at his fingertips.”

And with that, let’s take a look at some of next week’s other marquee games. We'll give you Korner's line consultant group's recommended odds and the actual opening numbers at the Wynn.

    Virginia (+14.5) at Miami

With the spotlight off their scandal for a few weeks, coach Al Golden and the Hurricanes have gotten back to business. Miami is now 4-3 after consecutive wins over North Carolina and Georgia Tech and may yet make a run for the ACC title game.

“I just don’t think Virginia’s in this game at all,” Korner said. “So, with it being a Thursday game, it will be heavily bet. So, we needed to go high. I don’t expect it to be close.”

The Sports Club recommended Virginia +17 but the Wynn opened just over the two-touchdown spread.

    Illinois (+6) at Penn State

A month ago, Penn State was smarting after getting whacked by Alabama and barely getting by Temple. Now, as the Big Ten dominoes continue to fall, all of a sudden the Nittany Lions are in first place? Wow. Nice run. Bad league.

“I still don’t have a feel for Penn State,” said Korner, who recommended Illinois +5.5. “This will probably be a tight game, and I’m not a fan of Penn State yet. It’s kind of a bland line, but we didn’t want to be too far out there.”

    Michigan State (+5.5) at Nebraska

Count the Spartans and Cornhuskers as teams who believe they have a chance in the Big Ten now, too. Michigan State has recovered well from losing to Notre Dame, setting up an interesting matchup in Lincoln.

“This will be a good game. Nebraska’s continuously getting money, even though this isn’t one of their best years,” Korner said. “This might be a letdown game for Michigan State. I don’t see it that way, personally, but we think the bettors will. This is a line that we’re not so sure where it’s going to go as the week progresses.”

Early bettors took the points right away forcing the Wynn to drop their number down to 4.5.

    Oklahoma (-13.5) at Kansas State

One of the big boys was bound to fall at some point and there probably aren’t a ton of people out there surprised to discover Oklahoma fit the bill. Now, it’s up to coach Bob Stoops to see how they bounce back against an electric Wildcats team.

“Coming off a loss, yes, but we still kept it at a high number for Oklahoma,” said Korner, who sent out OU -15. “I think Kansas State can play, no question, and this will be tight, and volatile for a while. But it’s a fair number, and Oklahoma can hit it if they play well.”

    Baylor (+18) at Oklahoma State

The Cowboys not only seem to be in the driver seat for the Big 12 title, but they even have a distinct shot at the national championship game now. How long those chances last, still remain to be seen. But no matter what happens in December, Oklahoma State still has to take care of business on October.

“Now, they have everything in front of them and things really broke well for them,” Korner said. “Knowing that, I expect them to play big here. Really big.”

The Sports Club sent out a larger spread (+20) than what the Wynn opened and it seems the early bettors think the Bears are live dogs in this one. The Wynn was dealing Cowboys -16 late Sunday.

Iowa State (+17.5) at Texas Tech

We wouldn’t normally signal out this game as marquee, but we owe it to the hangover players out there to see just how coach Tommy Tuberville and Texas Tech respond after the upset of Oklahoma.

“I don’t have a good feel for these teams. We expect good play here in a conference game, and it will be high scoring and exciting,” Korner said. “But Texas Tech should take care of business.”

Korner's group recommended at smaller spread (+14) and that seems to be the way the line will move. The Wynn dropped down to TTU -16 shortly after opening.

    South Carolina (-6.5) at Tennessee

Steve Spurrier clearly doesn’t have the talent that the elite SEC teams have this season, but he may have the best collection on the East side of the league and should be able to get to Atlanta for the conference title game.

“As SEC matchups go, this is not a great game,” Korner said. “We stuck it at a touchdown, as South Carolina is always capable of laying an egg. They do have the talent to pull away, certainly, but you never know.”

This one got bet down right away, with the Vols getting just 4.5 points late Sunday at the Wynn.

    Clemson (-5) at Georgia Tech

The inconsistent Yellow Jackets hurt this matchup a little with their loss to Miami. However, now that Clemson is truly in the national-title hunt, we’ll include the Tigers moving forward.

“Another one where we expect a high-scoring game,” Korner said. “I like Clemson, like the way the offense has been playing, and I easily could’ve gone as high as 8. I don’t see a letdown at all, and really expect to see a blowout.”

The Wynn didn't have this one posted with their opening spreads but offshore books went with a shortly line, installing the Tigers as 4.5-point favorites.

    Wisconsin (-8.5) at Ohio State

Bounce Back, Part II. Quarterback Russell Wilson and the Badgers were stunned against Michigan State. This is the Big Ten though and anyone can recover, right?

“This is a good game, all of a sudden. Wisconsin, though, should really bounce back,” Korner said. “Ohio State is not Ohio State any more. And Wisconsin, even after a loss, knows they’re one game away from right being back in the middle of things. It has happened before. They know that. So, I do not see a letdown.”

Korner's group was bang on with the Wynn on this one but the line is moving down toward a touchdown spread.

Bonus Game: Nov: 5: LSU (+5) at Alabama

We’d be remiss not to mention the clash of the titans that is still two weeks ago, only because both teams have a bye, and also because books are already taking action on this mammoth SEC battle.

“We opened it at 6, and nobody is betting the home team,” Korner said. “Things have slowed down a bit. But all the money that’s been coming in, has been on LSU.”

Good team, bad bet: College teams that don't cover

Just because a college football team has on-field success doesn’t necessarily mean it is a spread-covering juggernaut. Not every team can be Stanford, which is 7-0 straight-up and against the spread, the lone school in the country to be perfect in both.

So far this season, four schools — Penn State, Virginia Tech, Nebraska and Texas A&M — have strong win-loss records but have been disastrous ATS.

Let’s take a look at which of these teams you should fade or follow going forward:

Penn State (7-1 SU, 2-6 ATS)

The most boring, plodding team in college football has been consistently overvalued since the beginning of the season. Penn State is perceived to have a great defense, but I’m not entirely sure that’s true. The Nittany Lions have faced just one top 50 offense in the country this year — Alabama — otherwise, they’ve gone up against seven subpar attacking units, including four that rank 70th or worse.

Offense, of course, is Penn State’s biggest weakness. The Nittany Lions have scored 23 points or less in five of their eight games, and consequently, they have struggled to cover double digit spreads.

Penn State has covered two of the last three, including Saturday’s 34-24 win at Northwestern as 4.5-point road favorites. But asking a team to cover seven- or 10-point spreads when many of their games are played in the lower 20s is too much to ask.

      The pick: Fade

      Virginia Tech (7-1, 2-6 ATS)

Over the last five years, Frank Beamer has been one of the best spread-covering coaches in the country, posting a 36-23 ATS record. But this year, Beamer is in jeopardy of suffering his worst ATS season in more than a decade.

Virginia Tech has been favored by a touchdown or more in all eight of its games but isn’t coming close to covering the spread. Earlier this year, during a streak of five straight ATS losses, the Hokies failed to cover by an average of 10.6 points relative to the spread. Against Clemson, they lost 23-3 as 7-point home favorites.

With three of Virginia Tech’s final four games coming on the road, you might find some good opportunities to fade them. And don’t be the least bit surprised if they drop a few of them outright, including the finale at Virginia.

      The pick: Fade

      Nebraska (6-1, 2-5 ATS)

Sharp bettors have been fading Nebraska since the first week of the season and have had tremendous success doing so, as the Huskers began the year 1-5 ATS. But public perception of Nebraska seems to have reached a season low, and with numbers that won’t be nearly as inflated as the ones they had to lay in September, the Huskers should be able to cover a few spreads the rest of the way.

The Huskers covered as 24-point favorites last week at Minnesota and were able to use the bye week to re-tool their defense, which hasn’t lived up to expectations.

Bo Pelini is 9-3 ATS in games with single-digit spreads, and with upcoming games against Michigan State, Penn State and Michigan, it’s possible — if not likely — that three of Nebraska’s final five games will have spreads of less than a touchdown.

      The pick: Follow

      Texas A&M (5-2, 2-5 ATS)

If Texas A&M didn’t blow 17- and 18-point halftime leads against Oklahoma State and Arkansas in consecutive weeks, the Aggies would be in the national championship hunt rather than at the back end of the top 25 polls.

The Aggies entered the year with enormous expectations and haven’t lived up to them, at least not yet. But let’s not forget: The Aggies also underachieved last year before turning it on down the stretch. They covered six straight games last year after starting the season 3-3 straight up and 2-4 ATS.

Texas A&M should be 4-3 ATS rather than 2-5, and four of its five wins have been by 16 points or more. This is a good team that isn’t nearly as overvalued as it was early on, and the Aggies could be poised for yet another strong finish with three of their final five games being played at Kyle Field, where they are 12-5-1 ATS the last three years.

      The pick: Follow

            Tuesday's game

Underdogs covered last four FIU-Troy games; Panthers (+8.5) pounded Troy State 52-35 LY, its first win in last six series games; average total in last three series games is 72.7. FIU lost three of its last four games since upsetting Central Florida, a win that doesn't look as good now, given UCF's recent struggles. Troy allowed 31-38 points in losing its last two games, both as faves (of 6.5/9.5 points). FIU allowed 17 or less points in all four of its wins, 31+ in its three losses. Trojans are 0-3 on road, with losses by 24-10-14 points. Sun Belt favorites are 5-8 against the spread, 4-7 if spread is 6+ points.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Troy at Florida International: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Troy at Florida International (-6, NA)

Fading Florida International hosts dreadful Troy in a Sun Belt showdown that only a bettor could love.

The Golden Panthers are coming off a 34-16 loss at Arkansas State last Tuesday and have lost three of four, failing to cover in each.

The 2-4 Trojans are skidding, too. They’ve lost two straight and have covered the spread only once this season.

FIU was an 8-point underdog at Troy last year, but racked up a school record 668 yards in a 52-35 drubbing of the Trojans. Troy’s defense is worse this season.

              THE LINE

The Las Vegas Wynn opened Florida International as a 5-point favorite on Sunday afternoon, but the line had jumped to as high as 6.5 early Monday.
FIU has not fared well when favored, covering the number in only one of its last six as the favorite.

              STATISCIALLY SPEAKING

Throughout his 21-year career at Troy, coach Larry Blakeney has put together overachieving teams. But this year’s Trojans are disappointing. Defensive struggles are the biggest reason why.

Troy ranks 113th in total defense, allowing 460 yards and nearly 35 points per game against a schedule that’s 91st in the Sagarin Ratings. The Trojans rank 90th or worse in 10 of the 13 statistical categories the NCAA lists on its team pages.

Needless to say, Florida International has a statistical advantage almost across the board. The Golden Panthers, though, have slumped since getting off to a 3-0 start that included solid wins at Louisville and against Central Florida.

FIU is balanced offensively, but not overly explosive. The Golden Panthers were held to less than 300 yards against Arkansas State. That sounds bad, until you notice that Troy’s offense had just 126 yards in last week’s 38-10 loss to Louisiana-Monroe.

              INJURY REPORT

Neither team is reporting any impactful injuries.

              WEATHER

Forecast call for late showers with a 14 mph ENE breeze at FIU Stadium.

              TRENDS

Troy has covered the spread in five straight Tuesday night games.

Troy had been an ATS dynamo since joining the Sun Belt in 2004. Entering this season, the Trojans were 29-21-1 in conference play. But Troy has been trending down as of late, covering only two of its last nine Sun Belt games.

The Under is 9-2-1 in the last 11 FIU games against a team with a losing record.

Home-field has been overrated in this series, with the road team covering in five of the last six meetings.

Connecticut at Pittsburgh: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Connecticut Huskies at Pittsburgh Panthers (-10.5, 41.5)

                      THE STORY
: Last season when Connecticut played Pittsburgh the teams had BCS aspirations. This year as the Panthers host the Huskies in a mid-week tilt, they're playing for .500. Both are 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big East, sharing victories over South Florida. However, no Big East team appears bulletproof – just ask West Virginia – so the winner here moves right back into league title contention.

                      TV: ESPN.

LINE MOVES: Pittsburgh opened -10 and the spread has moved to 10.5. The total opened at 41.5 and climbed to 42.5 before coming back down to 41.

WEATHER: Rain is in the forecast for Heinz Field. There is a 65 percent chance of rain with a 100 percent chance in the second half. Game-time temperatures will dip into the low 50s.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (3-4, 1-1 Big East, 2-5 ATS): The Huskies rebounded well to defeat the Bulls, 16-10, on Oct. 15, after being blitzed for 81 points in back-to-back losses to Western Michigan and West Virginia. As with UConn's other victories, defense was key, forcing four turnovers and stopping South Florida on fourth down late and in Huskies' territory. Their lone touchdown came from the defense, when cornerback Byron Jones returned a fumble for a score. Lyle McCombs continued his impressive freshman campaign, rushing for 130 yards against South Florida to bolster his total to 705 yards to go with four touchdowns.

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (3-4, 1-1 Big East, 2-5 ATS): The Panthers' offense is a mess. Ray Graham is the nation's fifth-leading rusher (939 yards, nine TDs), but he hasn’t been able to make up for the team’s quarterback struggles. Junior Tino Sunseri and freshman Trey Anderson went a pitiful 9-for-29 for 40 yards in Pitt's 26-14 home loss to Utah on Oct. 15, in which the Panthers blew a 14-3 lead. They've produced just two offensive touchdowns in the last nine quarters (both by Graham).

                      EXTRA POINTS

                      1. UConn's biggest weapon could be senior kicker Dave Teggart, who's 6-for-7 on field goals the past two games and has four multiple field goal games this year.

                      2. Another poor Sunseri outing could have Pitt fans chanting for Anderson. Sunseri has seven picks against just five touchdown passes and has been sacked 32 times after Utah dropped him five times.

                      3. Graham fumbled a kickoff that set up UConn's final score in the Huskies' 30-28 triumph over Pittsburgh last season in East Hartford. UConn leads the series, 4-3.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Huskies are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
                      * Underdog is 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings.
                      * Huskies are 6-1 ATS in their last seven conference games.
                      * Panthers are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 conference games.

PREDICTION: Pittsburgh 20, Connecticut 16 – A conservative Panthers' ground game and confident Huskies' squad should make for a tight, low-scoring affair.

UConn is 2-4 in last six games as road underdog. Pitt failed to cover its last four tries as a favorite.

                            Week 9

                            Thursday's games

Underdogs covered six of last seven Virginia-Miami games; Miami is 4-3 in last seven series games, but only one of four wins was by more than 10 points. Cavaliers lost two of last three visits here, losing 52-17 in last visit here two years ago; this is their first road game in six weeks- they're 10-7 in last 17 games as road underdog, 0-1 this year- they've turned ball over 18 times in last six games (-7). Miami is 18-34 as home faves since 2002, 2-1 this year; they beat North Carolina/Ga Tech last two games, after tough 38-35 loss at Va Tech. Four of last five Virginia games stayed under; three of last four Miami games went over.

Houston is 6-3 in its last nine games against crosstown rival Rice, but only one of last four series wins was by more than 17 points; Owls lost last four visits here, by average score of 53-24. Underdogs covered five of last seven series games. Rice is 6-14 in last 20 games as road dog (1-3 this season), losing away games this year by 25-25-24-4 points, with a cover at Marshall. Houston is 7-0 and trying to run up scores in the rare chance they can get a BCS bowl bid; three of their last four wins are by 35+ points, but they've struggled at La Tech (35-34), UTEP (49-42), so they're lot better at home. Double digit favorites are 4-7 in C-USA play.

Thursday's college football action: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virginia Cavaliers at Miami Hurricanes (-13.5, 48.5)

                              THE STORY
: Virginia and Miami share a common victory over previously undefeated Georgia Tech. Both schools, though, have completely different goals for the second half of the season. The Cavaliers followed up that first win over a top-15 program since 2005 with an offensive hangover in a 28-14 loss to North Carolina State. They play three of their final five games on the road and might need every one to end a three-year postseason drought. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, strung together their first consecutive wins of the season over North Carolina and Georgia Tech. Now that lengthy suspensions are over for players such as defensive end Olivier Vernon, Miami has a realistic shot at finishing third in the ACC.

                              TV: ESPN

LINE MOVES: Miami opened as high as -15 at some books but currently sits around -13.5.

WEATHER: Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers. Winds expected between 6-12 mph with a temperature of 78 degrees.

ABOUT VIRGINIA (4-3, 1-2 ACC): The Cavaliers’ two-quarterback system continues to puzzle fans and prevent an offensive rhythm. Michael Rocco and David Watford combined for just 11 completions against North Carolina State and failed to put together a drive of more than eight plays. In total, Virginia gained a season-low 249 yards against the ACC’s fourth-worst defense. The Cavs have just two second-half touchdown passes in conference play, choosing instead to rely on an improving defense and a power running game. The quarterbacks, though, may need to make more than a few crucial throws against Miami, which just limited Georgia Tech’s ground attack to half of its season average.

ABOUT MIAMI (4-3, 2-2 ACC): For as dumb as some Hurricanes acted off the field before the season, Al Golden’s crew is playing quite cerebral lately. Jacory Harris has thrown just one pick in his last 18 quarters and the team committed just one penalty in last week’s victory. Miami, though, still needs to play a full four quarters of offense. Harris completed just eight passes against the Yellow Jackets and hasn’t led the offense to a second-half touchdown the past two weeks.

                              EXTRA POINTS

                              1. Touchdowns could be a premium with Virginia and Miami ranked first and third in the ACC, respectively, in red zone defense.

                              2. The Cavaliers have committed seven turnovers in two road games.

                              3. Virginia had a span of six straight three-and-outs against North Carolina State. Miami, though, is second-to-last in the ACC in third-down defense, allowing teams to convert 45.9 percent.

                              TRENDS:

                              - Virginia is 3-9 against the spread in its last 12 conference games.

                              - The under is 5-0 in Virginia's last five overall.

Harris is facing the ACC’s most efficient pass defense while the Virginia duo has just seven touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Rice Owls at Houston Cougars (-27.5, 71)

                              THE STORY
: No. 18 Houston enters this battle for the Bayou Bucket a perfect 7-0 and looking to equal the best start in program history. The Cougars’ spread passing attack is clicking once again, as they’ve scored at least 35 points in every game and 49 or more in the last four contests. The road team only has to travel 6.1 miles in this inner-city rivalry, but Rice’s last trip to Robertson Stadium in 2009 didn’t go so well. The Owls were pummeled 73-14, giving up the third-most points in school history and most since a 77-0 loss to LSU in 1977.
Houston leads the all-time series 26-11, dating back to 1971, including a 5-1 mark at Robertson Stadium.

LINE MOVES: Both the spread and the total are up a half point from their opening numbers, now sitting at Houston -27.5 with a 71-point total.

WEATHER: Cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers and 12-17 mph winds. The game-time temperature should be around 60 degrees.

ABOUT RICE (2-5, 1-3 Conference USA): The Owls are in search of their first winning season since 2008, but they haven’t gotten off to a great start in conference play. In last weekend’s 38-20 home loss to Tulsa, Rice committed four turnovers and was outgained by 120 yards. The Owls, who had to face one of the nation’s toughest non-conference schedules, rank 115th nationally in total defense, giving up 472 yards per game, and their 96th-ranked pass defense isn’t a good matchup for Houston’s fast-paced attack.

ABOUT HOUSTON (7-0, 3-0 Conference USA): In the Cougars’ 63-28 pounding of Marshall last weekend, quarterback Case Keenum won his 19th straight home game. He’s tossed 66 touchdowns to only nine interceptions during that stretch. He spread the ball around beautifully against the Thundering Herd, throwing touchdowns to five different players. Houston enters this game with the nation’s top-ranked offense, averaging an astounding 606 yards. Keenum — recently named a Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist, given annually to college football’s best quarterback — is the national leader in total offense at 389 yards per game.

                              EXTRA POINTS

                              1. The home team has won the last four in this series, including Rice’s 34-31 upset victory last season.

                              2. Houston has more wins against Rice (26) than any other school in its 66-year history.

                              3. This is one of two FBS rivalries featuring teams located in the same city (USC-UCLA is the other), and this game will be played in the Texans’ Reliant Stadium in 2012 and 2013.

                              TRENDS:

                              - Rice is 1-7 against the spread in its last eight road games.
                              - The over is 9-3 in Houston's last 12 home games.
                              - Houston is 4-0 against the spread in its last four home games.

PREDICTION: Houston 56, Rice 20. The Owls won’t be able to slow down Keenum and the Cougars, and this one could be over by halftime.
