Preview: Rangers (1-2) at Jets (2-4)

    Date: October 24, 2011 8:30 PM EDT

The Winnipeg Jets are coming off their best offensive performance of the season. They'll next try to take advantage of a team that just endured its worst.

The New York Rangers look to bounce back from a lackluster shutout loss when they conclude their lengthy season-opening road trip Monday night.

Winnipeg (2-4-1) scored five straight goals in a 15-minute span of the first and second periods after quickly falling behind 2-0 Saturday against Carolina, finishing with a 5-3 victory. The Jets had totaled 11 goals over their first six games, scoring just once three different times.

Chris Mason held onto the lead Saturday by making 11 of his 18 saves in the third period. Mason earned his first win of the season after replacing Ondrej Pavelec in the first period, helping to keep the Hurricanes 0 for 7 on the power play.

Winnipeg's opponents were 6 for 23 with the man advantage in the previous six games.

"We were tired of scoring just one goal and giving up goals on the penalty kill," defenseman Mark Stuart said. "We showed that we can score and can come back on teams. That's good going forward, but it's one game. It's a good start, but in this league, if you want to be successful you've got to be consistent."

The Jets franchise has been consistently successful against the Rangers lately, going 8-1-1 in the last 10 matchups. Atlanta was 3-0-1 during last season's series, and Pavelec recorded a shutout at Madison Square Garden on April 7.

After scoring a combined seven goals over consecutive victories, New York was blanked again Saturday at Edmonton. The Rangers (2-2-2) were outshot 27-19 during that 2-0 defeat and went 0 for 5 on the power play, making them a league-worst 1 for 23 with the man advantage.

"It was a terrible game by us," forward Brandon Dubinsky said. "In order to win hockey games we need to win those battles and we need to have the puck. We didn't do any of those things tonight. It's disappointing because we came in here with a great opportunity and we didn't execute at all."

Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist left the game in the third period when a problem with his skate caused pain in his left foot. Because of that, Lundqvist might get his first night off when the Rangers wrap up a seven-game trek that's taken them from Sweden to Long Island and western Canada.

Lundqvist and backup Martin Biron have both dropped their last two matchups with the Jets franchise. Biron gave up a season-high five goals during a loss to the Thrashers last Oct. 27.

Winnipeg coach Claude Noel said he will likely give Mason a start "in the next couple of games," but in this one he might look to Pavelec, who's 2-0-1 with a 1.30 goals-against average versus New York. Mason is 3-0-0 with a 2.46 GAA in four career matchups but gave up four goals in the most recent one.

After facing the Rangers, the Jets will head out on their own season-high, seven-game trip. They'll face New York during the sixth stop on that journey Nov. 6.

Preview: Maple Leafs (3-1) at Flyers (4-2)

    Date: October 24, 2011 7:00 PM EDT

While the Philadelphia Flyers have struggled after a strong start, the Toronto Maple Leafs have kept theirs going.

Toronto, though, hasn't fared very well against Philadelphia over the past few years.

The Flyers look to get back on track while seeking their eighth win in 10 tries over Toronto on Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

Philadelphia (4-2-1) has been outscored 9-4 while dropping the first two of a three-game homestand, including a 4-2 defeat against St. Louis on Saturday.

Ilya Bryzgalov went 3-0-1 with a 1.99 goals-against average in his first four games, but he has a 4.59 GAA over the last two as his defense hasn't often seemed to be on the same page.

Captain Chris Pronger lauded Bryzgalov while saying the Flyers must help their goaltender, who is still adjusting to his new team after coming over from Phoenix in the offseason.

"We need to talk to him, (and) first and foremost you have to talk on the ice (to) let him know where you are, where you want (the puck)," Pronger told the team's official website. "We do stuff like this in practice all the time. You have to work at it. We've got to do a better job at communicating with him. He's stopping the puck for us."

Still, Pronger said the Flyers, who are just 1-2-1 at home, aren't going to panic despite back-to-back losses.

"Well, we're only seven games in," said Pronger, who has a goal and seven assists in his last seven games against the Leafs. "We need to do things better. We knew it would be a work in progress. We have a lot of new faces and you're not going to go 82-0."

It is unclear if Bryzgalov will start Monday, but he's 4-0-0 with a 1.55 GAA in five career appearances versus Toronto, which beat Montreal 5-4 in overtime Saturday.

The Leafs (5-1-1) overcame three one-goal deficits despite losing starting goaltender James Reimer after a first-period collision with the Canadiens' Brian Gionta.

Jonas Gustavsson made 15 saves to help secure the win, and he'll likely get another shot in net Monday. Reimer is suffering whiplash effects and, according to coach Ron Wilson, won't dress against the Flyers.

Gustavsson allowed six goals in his only career start against the Flyers.

"No matter what, you always have to be ready,' Gustavsson said. "It could happen at any time so you always try to be ready.'

Phil Kessel tied Pittsburgh's James Neal as the NHL's co-leader with his eighth goal, while Dave Steckel, Dion Phaneuf and Nikolai Kulemin also scored before Kessel assisted on Mikhail Grabovski's overtime winner.

Kessel leads the league with 14 points, though he's struggled against Philadelphia throughout his career. He has one goal and five assists in 18 games versus the Flyers, going scoreless with a minus-3 rating in his last three.

Danny Briere, who had a goal and an assist in Philadelphia's loss Saturday, has 14 goals and 18 assists while earning at least one point in 21 of his last 25 games against the Leafs.

Toronto won the last meeting in Philadelphia 3-2 on March 3, but was outscored 26-11 in losing the previous five games there.

The Flyers have outscored the Leafs 33-20 in winning seven of nine in the series overall.

Preview: Panthers (3-3) at Canadiens (1-4)

      Date: October 24, 2011 7:30 PM EDT

A major trade seemed to light a fire under the Florida Panthers.

While a separate, less-prominent deal by the Montreal Canadiens likely won't have the same effect, coach Jacques Martin's team could surely use a spark.

The Panthers begin a three-game road trip Monday against the Canadiens, who will try to avoid losing six straight for the first time in more than four years.

Hoping to shake things up after suffering 3-0 defeats to Washington and Buffalo earlier last week, Florida (4-3-0) sent left wing David Booth, center Steve Reinprecht and a third-round pick in the 2013 draft to Vancouver on Saturday in exchange for veteran forwards Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm.

"A lot of things come into play," general manager Dale Tallon said.

"We're in the performance business and I was not happy with our team's performance, especially the (previous) two games. I wasn't going to sit still and let this fester and I want to send a message and I want to make changes and I want to get better. We felt as far as an organization we get two top NHL players."

The move seemed to give the Panthers a mental boost before the new acquisitions even arrived. They defeated the New York Islanders 4-2 hours after announcing the trade behind a goal and two assists from center Shawn Matthias.

Montreal (1-4-2) is coming off its fifth straight defeat after blowing three one-goal leads during Saturday's 5-4 overtime loss to Toronto.

The Canadiens, who haven't dropped six in a row since Feb. 6-17, 2007, have converted just one of 20 power-play opportunities during their 0-3-2 skid.

"The leadership group in this team is extremely important. It's crucial to have their feedback in this situation, and with guys like (Brian) Gionta, (Hal) Gill, (Travis) Moen and (Josh) Gorges, you really couldn't ask for a more invested group of individuals," Martin told the team's official website. "They're really taking things to heart, and they're really disappointed after a tough loss like last night's. Now, we have a day to rebuild ourselves, refocus, and make sure that we come back Monday night with an even stronger performance and better execution."

Montreal made a minor move Sunday, acquiring center Petteri Nokelainen and minor league defenseman Garrett Stafford from Phoenix in exchange for center Brock Trotter and a seventh-round pick in 2012.

That trade isn't likely to provide any immediate relief for a Canadiens team stumbling on both sides of the ice. Montreal is tied for 25th in the NHL with a 3.29 goals-against average and has been held to either one goal or none four times in seven games.

Carey Price, who has started every game this season, is also struggling, posting a 3.13 goals-against average. The five-game skid is his longest winless drought since going 0-6-0 over seven games - six starts - Oct. 7-Nov. 3, 2009.

Price made 30 saves in a 4-0 road win over the Panthers on March 3. That contest was the Canadiens' third consecutive victory in this series. They've also won 11 of the last 14 meetings.

Florida goaltender Jose Theodore, originally drafted by Montreal in 1994, is 1-1-1 with a 5.56 GAA over his last three games versus his former team.

Theodore stopped eight of 10 shots in the first two periods against the Islanders before he was replaced by Jacob Markstrom, who turned away all 18 shots in the third to earn his first career win.

"As a backup goalie, that's your job - to always be prepared if something happens," Markstrom said.

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

        HOT TEAM: Los Angeles Kings

There are plenty of hot teams out of the gate, and while it’s tough to look past the 7-0 Capitals, we did go with Washington in this real-estate district last week, so let’s switch conferences.

Los Angeles was the chic pick of many to win the West, and if you were among them, you have to feel pretty good so far. The Kings, even without injured defenseman Drew Doughty, have shown depth, balance and poise. And when all else fails, they have pretty good goaltending, too.

How good? Heading into Tuesday’s tilt with New Jersey, Jonathan Quick is riding a three-game shutout streak. Yep, the Kings have won four consecutive games, the last three by way of the clean sheet.

On offense, the summer's big acquisition, Mike Richards, already has five assists, four of which have come on the power play. It all adds up to one hot team in Hollywood, one that should probably be on your radar, moving forward.

        COLD TEAM: Columbus Blue Jackets

Consider it a tale of two former Flyers. When Philadelphia decided to clean house this summer, they shipped Richards to Los Angeles and Jeff Carter to Columbus. Right off the bat, we knew Richards was getting the better of the two landing spots.

Carter is on injured reserve with a hairline fracture of his right foot, and his new team has simply not been able to recover. Saturday's 4-3 loss to Ottawa dropped the Blue Jackets to 0-7-1, and they have just a single point as they prepare to meet Detroit at home on Tuesday.

Nothing seems to be working. Goaltender Steve Mason has taken six of those losses, and the offense has produced two goals or less seven times.

Coach Scott Arniel, who cut his teeth in the minor leagues, seems to have the mental makeup to withstand this sort of a slump. But for a team that added a lot of payroll, and has been to the playoffs just once in their 10 seasons in the league, you have to ask yourself if it's time for a change behind the bench.

        OVER PLAY: St. Louis Blues

The bargain-basement additions of veteran forwards Jason Arnott and Jamie ****enbrunner raised some eyebrows in St. Louis this summer, but the former Stanley Cup champions with New Jersey have provided leadership, depth and a little punch up front, making the Blues a better over buy than previously thought.

On Saturday, Arnott had a goal, an assist and was a plus-3, while ****enbrunner was a plus-1 with two shots, as the Blues went over with a 4-2 win vs. Philadelphia.

St. Louis has five overs in eight tries as it heads into Wednesday’s tilt vs. Vancouver. And while we never like to see a player injured, the Blues did suffer one Saturday night vs. the Flyers that could have ramifications in the over world.

Strong two-way forward David Backes left in the second period with an upper-body injury, after running into Philadelphia captain Chris Pronger. Backes is traditionally strong in his own zone, so any absence might mean more goals against. Keep an eye on that.

        UNDER PLAY: Edmonton Oilers

Lot of options here, especially in the Western Conference, but we’ll give the nod to the team with the best percentage. And at 6-1 under through Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Rangers, Edmonton takes the cake.

Much has been made of the youth and exuberance of this team up front, what with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Taylor Hall, who combined on a goal on Saturday, but the goaltending has been tremendous for coach Tom Renney, who continues to push the right buttons.
Without naming a clear-cut starter, Renney has rotated between Nikolai Khabibulin and Devan Dubnyk, with quality results. Khabibulin posted the blanking on Saturday, which means Dubnyk will likely be in net Tuesday vs. Vancouver.

Either way, when you’ve only allowed 12 goals in five games, you’re on your way to being one of the best under buys in the league.

        SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE

** Hard to tell how the Rangers might play at home since they’ve yet to do so, but they are going to give you a nice long look from Madison Square Garden either way. New York has played six games, all on the road, and has one more to go on this trip -- at Winnipeg on Monday -- before returning to their renovated rink in midtown Manhattan for an unheard-of six-game homestand. It begins on Thursday vs. Toronto, continues Saturday vs. Ottawa, and goes well into November.

** The Flyers are feeling it a bit these days, after having lost consecutive games at home to Washington and St. Louis. And now, Philadelphia has a jumbled week ahead of it that might give us a true indication of just what this Flyers team is going to be. Starting Monday, with a home date vs. Toronto, Philadelphia will play four games in six days, yet only one -- at Montreal on Wednesday -- away from the Wells Fargo Center.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Winnipeg Jets (+105, 5.5)

All the New York Rangers want at this point is a good sleep in their own beds.

New York began the season in Europe and then went on a five-game road trip as the renovations at Madison Square Garden neared completion. The club sits 2-2-2 on the year and has yet to put everything together.

The Rangers were terrible in a 2-0 loss at Edmonton on Saturday, getting outplayed in all zones and lacking any type of forecheck. That’ll happen when you’ve been on the road as long as they have, but coach John Tortorella wouldn’t let his team off the hook, lashing out at the media and refusing to answer any questions following the loss.

This is New York’s last road game before the team heads back to the Big Apple, so you know Torts will have the Blueshirts set to finish this off on a positive note before hosting Toronto in what should be a big show for Thursday’s home opener.

        Pick: Rangers

Florida Panthers at Montreal Canadiens (-150, 5)

Both the Panthers and Habs have shuffled their rosters early this season.

The Panthers sent David Booth and minor leaguer Steven Reinprecht to Vancouver in exchange for Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm. With Samuelsson and Sturm both free agents in the offseason, it’s essentially a salary cap move to clear Horton’s $4.25 million annual contract off the books and word has it the deal hit both Booth and the Panthers hard.

Booth was well-liked in the Florida dressing room and Sturm and Samuelsson won’t add much to the team offensively.

Meanwhile, Montreal has been hammered by injuries with Scott Gomez (upper body), Andrei Markov (knee), Jaroslav Spacek (ribs) and Chris Campoli (hamstring) are all on the shelf.

“When the season starts, we want to start out with an early jump on things,” captain Brian Gionta told reporters after Saturday’s 5-4 overtime loss to Toronto. “That’s not where we are. But let’s face it, we’re six games in and there’s plenty of hockey to be played. There’s concern … but you can’t dwell on it. You have to find a way to change it and move forward.”

This could be a sloppy one. We’ll take the over.

        Pick: Over
