Sunday’s betting tips: Tebow in, Palmer in limbo

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Raiders are 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 6-1 ATS in their last seven against the AFC.

NFL: The Packers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games and 7-1 ATS in their last eight against the NFC.

NFL: The Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games and 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 against the NFC.

MLB: The Cardinals are 7-0 in Edwin Jackson’s last seven starts.

NHL: The Ducks are 4-1 in their last five overall and the under is 5-1 in their last six overall.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Rams are 0-6 ATS in their last six overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.

NFL: The Browns are 1-7-1 ATS in their last nine overall and 0-6-1 in their last seven home games.

NFL: The Texans are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games and 0-5 ATS in their last five as underdogs.

MLB: The under is 1-9 in the Cardinals’ last 10 road games and 1-5 in the Rangers’ last six home playoff games.

NHL: The Coyotes are 2-9 in their last 11 overall and 1-6 in their last seven road games.

    Key stat

20 – The magic number for Michael Turner’s carries per game this season. When Turner runs the football more than 20 times, the Falcons are 3-0. When Turner runs it fewer than 20 times, the Falcons are 0-3. Expect a heavy dose of Turner on Sunday against a Detroit defense that is giving up 129.5 rushing yards per game, third worst in the NFC ahead of only St. Louis and Carolina.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Contrary to what seemed to be popular belief as recently as Saturday afternoon, Rams’ quarterback Sam Bradford will not take the field on Sunday at Dallas. He has been ruled out due to a high ankle sprain, which he suffered last week against Green Bay. Winless St. Louis will go with veteran A.J. Feeley under center.

    Biggest games on the slate

World Series Game 4: St. Louis Cardinals at Texas Rangers

San Diego Chargers at New York Jets (-1, 43.5)

    Notable quotable

“He will not be successful as long as they force him into this drop-back pro style offense. The only way he’s going to be successful is to put him in the shotgun. Don’t put him under center.” – Fox analyst Jimmy Johnson on Denver Broncos’ quarterback Tim Tebow, who is making his first start of the season on Sunday against the winless Miami Dolphins.

    Tips and notes

Is Carson Palmer starting for the Raiders or isn’t he? First he was, then he wasn’t. It sounds like Palmer, himself, said that he would not be ready in time for Sunday’s home game against Kansas City. “I'm 95 percent sure he is not going to play,” a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. If Palmer does not start, Kyler Boller will get the nod for Oakland.

The 161st competitive installment of the Manchester Derby will take place on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford. Manchester United leads the head-to-head series 67-43-50 after prevailing 3-2 on August 7 in the FA Community Shield. United stormed back from a 2-0 deficit in that showdown at Wembley Stadium in London. In league play, United is 32-15-25 against City with home-field advantage at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney is back in action after missing United’s 1-0 loss to City in the FA Cup semifinals back in April (suspension). Through eight games in the Premier League, City tops the standings at 7-0-1 and United is second at 6-0-2.

The Anaheim Ducks had a four-game win streak end with a 3-1 loss to Dallas on Friday. Corey Perry scored his team's only goal with one-tenth of a second left in the second period. Perry led the NHL with 50 goals last season and he scored six of those against Phoenix. That was more than he had against any other opponent.

Ice picks: Sunday’s best NHL bet
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-161, 5.5)

The 4-2 Ducks have been getting it done with defense so far this season. They are fifth in the NHL as of Saturday night allowing only two goals per game.

A big reason for that is goalie Jonas Hiller, who has started five of the team’s six games. Hiller has won three of his last four outings and he boasts a 1.97 GAA (10 goals in five games, one of which went into overtime).

Anaheim had won four in a row before a 3-1 loss to red-hot Dallas on Friday. The Stars scored two goals in the first eight minutes, but the Ducks insist they will correct their mistakes.

"We came out pretty flat,” Ryan Getzlaf explained. “You can't do that against a good hockey club. We've got to learn from it. We've still got a lot of good things going here. We won four in a row. We dropped one tonight, but we've got to get a big win Sunday.”

Phoenix (2-3-1), meanwhile, is no Dallas (6-1-0). The Coyotes have dropped two in a row while scoring a mere two goals in that span. They have also surrendered 18 goals in six games, the most of any Western Conference that has played only six games so far.

      Pick: Ducks

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bet
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Texas Rangers

A total of just eight runs were scored in the first two games in St. Louis, four for each team. The high-powered offenses could get going in Texas, in part because the bottom end of the rotations are now toeing the rubber.

Texas’ Game 4 starter Derek Holland has not gone more than five innings in any of his past four starts dating back to the end of the regular season. Yes, Ron Washington has a stellar bullpen at his disposal, but there is a reason why he is quick to pull the trigger on Holland. The southpaw allowed a total of seven runs on 11 hits over 7 1/3 innings in two ALCS appearances against Detroit.

Edwin Jackson of the Cardinals has not exactly been lights out, either. In two NLCS starts against Milwaukee, he lasted a total of 6 1/3 innings while giving up six earned runs on 11 hits.

But when Jackson takes the mound, St. Louis’ bats simply catch fire. The team has churned out double-digit runs in four of Jackson’s last six outings, including 12-run onslaughts in a pair of wins over the Brewers.

“I was kind of tentative last game,” explained Jackson, whose team is a perfect 7-0 in his last seven starts. “Wasn't nervous or anything; it was just a matter of going out and staying relaxed but not being too relaxed. So definitely I'll come out this game being aggressive from the first pitch.”

        Pick: Cardinals

            Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks, six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 517 contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

            6) Detroit Lions -3, 136
            5) Kansas City Chiefs +4, 137
            4) New Jersey Jets +2, 145
            3) Baltimore Ravens -7.5, 149
            T1) Green Bay Packers -9, 166
            T1) Denver Broncos +1.5, 166
            27) Tampa Bay Bucs +1, 68
            28) Seattle Seahawks +3, 62
            29) New Orleans Saints -14, 59
            30) Miami Dolphins -1.5, 49
            31) Jacksonville Jaguars +7, 42
            32) St Louis Rams +12.5, 40

            ******************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday......

            13) Finally some upsets in college football; terrific game in East Lansing, as Michigan State scored on a Hail Mary on last play of the game to hand the Badgers their first loss 37-31. Wisconsin led 14-0 early, but State blocked a punt for a TD and got a very memorable win.

            12) Texas Tech went into Norman, waited out a 90-minute rain delay at the start and hung on to upset Oklahoma, 41-38; Tech was relentlessly aggressive- they failed on a fake punt in their own territory late in the third quarter when they led by two TDs.

            11) Kansas State and Houston are obscure unbeatens; the way the game is today, the BCS nitwits will make these two Cinderellas play each other in their bowl game. Its impossible to underestimate how good a coaching job 72-year old Bill Snyder is doing at K-State.

            10) Best game of the day might've been Cincinnati 37, South Florida 34; right now, Bearcats have upper hand on getting a BCS bowl bid coming out of the mediocre Big East. Hard to believe they're better than Notre Dame in Year 3 of the Kelly regime in South Bend, but they are.

            9) How deep is LSU? They suspended three key players but still crushed Auburn 45-10; game wasn't even that close. Only eight of 59 plays LSU ran came on third downs. They're very, very good.

            8) Syracuse was very impressive Friday night, upsetting West Virginia in the Carrier Dome, 49-23. Orange converted 12 of 17 on third down.

            7) Clemson is a juggernaut; they hung 59 on North Carolina, getting six turnovers from the Tar Heels. Tigers have a lot of offensive weapons.

            6) Texas Tech punter Ryan Erxleben is the son of Russell Erxleben, one of the best kickers/punters in college history who punted for the Saints back in the days when Saints' fans wore bags on their heads. Long time ago.

Weirdness: When Texas Tech takes a knee to end the game, they take it out of a shotgun formation. I've never seen that before.

            5) Wisconsin has former Jet WR Al Toon's son on its team, as well as the son of former Viking coach Mike Tice as a backup QB. Helps to have kids on your team who have been around bigtime sports all their lives.

            4) When a college football team fires its coach in-season, I need to just go against that team from there on in; Tulane was a 12-point favorite after it fired Bob Toledo this week. I know Memphis is horrendous, but college coaches get canned in-season so rarely that teams usually fall apart, and the Green Wave did, losing 33-17 at home to the dreadful Tigers.

            3) Navy scored 76 points against East Carolina last year, but they lost to the Pirates 38-35, as Dominique Davis completed 40-45 passes for 372 yards in a ridiculously easy example of pitch-and-catch. Navy's lack of a good kicking game has cost them dearly this season.

            2) Oklahoma State won 45-24 at Missouri, second week in row they won fairly easily as 7-point road favorites. Not that easy to do in league play.

            1) Someone needs to tell Ron Washington that #5 on the Cardinals can hit, and it might be a good idea to walk his ass now and then. Or drill him.

So much for pitching and defense; over is 5-1 in Rangers' home playoff games, 6-1 in St Louis' road playoff games. Cardinals won Jackson's last eight starts; he is 1-0, 5.84 in three postseason starts. Rangers won last six Holland starts; he is also 1-0, 5.84 in three postseason starts, very odd coincidence. Rangers are 4-2 at home in playoffs; St Louis is 5-2 on road, allowing 11-9 runs in two losses. What are odds that both starting pitchers would've allowed eight runs in exactly 12.1 IP in last 3 starts? Texas better start backing Pujols off plate, or someone in outfield seats is going to get injured by one of his titanic blasts.
