Saturday's betting tips: Trojans don't handle success well

    Weather to watch

There’s a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms for Game 3 of the World Series in Arlington, Tex. It will be much warmer than it was in St. Louis. Temperatures will be in the mid-70s, with 7 mile-per-hour winds.

    Who’s hot

MLB: The Rangers are 8-0 in Matt Harrison’s last eight starts as a home favorite.

NCAAF: The Illini are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games following an ATS loss.

NCAAF: Temple is 20-8 ATS in its last 28 road games.

NHL: The Lightning are 6-2 in their last eight home games.

CFL: Winnipeg is 8-3-1 in its last 12 home games.

    Who’s not

MLB: The under is 1-8 in the Cardinals’ last nine road games.

NCAAF: The under is 5-15 in N.C. State’s last 20 ACC games.

NCAAF: The USC Trojans are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games following an ATS win.

NHL: The Oilers are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.

CFL: B.C. is 1-5 ATS in its last six meetings with Hamilton.

    Key stat

318 – That’s the average weight of North Carolina’s starting offensive line, biggest in the ACC. Clemson’s defensive front is 10 pounds lighter per player. Running behind that line, UNC freshman Giovani Bernard averages 109.6 yards per game and 5.9 per carry. The Tar Heels are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings with the Tigers. Unbeaten Clemson, ranked No. 8, is a 10.5-point home favorite.

    Injury not to be overlooked

Canadiens forward Scott Gomez left Thursday’s loss to Pittsburgh with an upper body injury. He got hurt on a first-period hit by the Penguins’ Deryk Engelland. Gomez tried to stay in the game but left after playing one more shift. His status for Saturday’s home game against Toronto was unclear.

    Game of the day

St. Louis Cardinals at Texas Rangers (-180, 9.5)

    Notable quotable

"I don't think anyone questions whether he's ready to go or can get it done. I know he's played well on a big stage for us, he's played against good opponents and done well. I think the locker room has a lot of confidence, and we know the coaches have a lot of confidence." – Seattle Seahawks WR Mike Williams on backup QB Charlie Whitehurst, who is likely to start Sunday at Cleveland. The Browns are favored by 3.

    Notes and tips

No. 13 Michigan State, already shorthanded at defensive end due to Tyler Hoover’s rib injury, will also be without DE William Gholston when the Spartans host No. 4 Wisconsin. Gholston was suspended for punching a Michigan player last Saturday. The sophomore starter leads the Spartans with seven tackles for loss. He’ll be replaced by sophomore Denzel Drone. The powerful Badgers are favored by 7.5 points.

No. 10 Arkansas, a 16-point favorite at Ole Miss, has eight receivers with eight or more catches as QB Tyler Wilson continues to make opponents pay for double coverage on All-SEC WR Greg Childs. The Razorbacks also get a defensive boost this week when starting DT Robert Thomas returns from a leg injury. Playing in the shadows of SEC West rivals LSU and Alabama, Arkansas is 10-3 ATS in its last 13 games.

Veteran center Olin Kreutz’s sudden retirement from the NFL should boost the Saints’ running game. The 34-year-old, six-time Pro Bowler has been pushed around in the four games he’s played this season. His replacement, Brian De La Puente, is stronger and about 30 pounds heavier than Kreutz. New Orleans is a 14-point favorite Sunday night over visiting Indy, which has a terrible run defense.

      Week 17

Montreal (10-5) @ Winnipeg (9-6)-- Road team won both meetings this season; Bombers (+8) won 25-23 in Quebec five weeks ago, then lost at home to Alouettes 32-26 (+6.5) two weeks later, so this is third meeting in last six weeks. Montreal won last four games, failing to cover three in row and six of eight- they're 4-3 SU on road. Winnipeg is 2-5 since their bye after starting season 7-1; they're 4-3 at home, but lost last two home games, allowing 45-32 points. Under is 10-5 in Bomber games.

BCLions (9-6) @ Hamilton (8-7)-- TigerCats (+3) upset the Lions 39-31 back in Week 4, when BC was stumbling, but Lions have now won eight games in row (7-1 vs spread)- they've won last five road games, scoring 33.6 ppg. TigerCats lost four of last six games but covered three of last four; they're 5-2 at home, losing only to Edmonton (38-23), Winnipeg (33-17). After allowing 25+ points in six of first seven games, BC held six of last eight opponents under 20 points. Under is 8-3 in last 11 Lion games, 3-0 in last three Hamilton tilts.

Canadian Bacon: Week 17 odds and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Alouettes at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+1, 52.5)

The Blue Bombers, after winning seven of the first eight games of the season, have lost five of their last seven. Buck Pierce isn’t helping matters. He had 10 TD passes and six picks in the first eight games but threw 10 picks and only three touchdown passes in the last seven.

The Alouettes head to Winnipeg riding a four-game winning streak. Winnipeg won in Montreal 25-23 in mid-September but lost a few weeks later in front of its home fans at Canad Inns when the Bombers had three chances to win it from the 1-yard line with a few seconds left.

A Montreal win would assure Marc Trestman’s squad of hosting the East division final at the Big O.

      Pick: Montreal

B.C. Lions at Hamilton Tiger Cats (+1, 53)

The Lions have won eight in a row and are still in the thick of the West division title, but this has been a short week and last week’s win was costly on the injury front. Receiver Shawn Gore suffered a concussion and won’t play against Hamilton. Rookie Marco Iannuzzi will take his place. Cornerback Dante Marsh also suffered a concussion but practiced all week and might play. Running back Tim Brown is out with a rib injury and will be replaced by Jock Sanders, who joined the Lions only last week. On special teams, Hamid Mahmoudi will replace Jason Arakgi (ankle) and linebacker Solomon Elimimian should miss a second game in a row.

The Tiger-Cats are struggling and coach Marcel Bellefeuille is playing yo-yo with his quarterbacks Kevin Glenn and Quinton Porter. I can’t recall any team having much success alternating quarterbacks during a game like he did last week in Montreal.

      Pick: B.C.

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens (-125, 5.5)

Perhaps a three-game homestand will help kickstart the Canadiens, who along with Winnipeg have the fewest points in the Eastern Conference (3). Toronto won’t make it easy, as the improved Maple Leafs try to rebound from a 6-2 loss to Boston Thursday.

          Counting on Cammalleri

Forward Mike Cammalleri returned to action on Thursday for Montreal, but it didn’t make much of a difference. Cammalleri, who missed three games with a leg laceration, had just one shot in 22 shifts during a 3-1 road loss to the Penguins.

And his return only offset the loss of Scott Gomez, who left the game with an upper body injury after the first period. The disappointing forward had just four shifts and 2:40 of ice time.

          Phil-ing it up for Toronto

The on-again, off-again relationship between the Toronto fans and forward Phil Kessel has to be on these days.

The All-Star, made famous last year for being the last pick in the ASG NHL Fantasy Draft, has seven goals and 12 points early on as the Maple Leafs take a 4-1-1 record into this Saturday night rivalry.

Kessel ran out of steam a bit versus Boston, his former team. A pointless night was his first in the last 16 regular-season games. But clearly he’s off to a great start and is a prime reason why the Leafs went five games before losing their first.

          Subban’s sophomore slump

Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban is trying to shake a slow start and took a big step forward versus the Penguins. He took 27 shifts, had 26:10 of ice time, and finished with three shots and two blocks.

But it's been a struggle to say the least for the sophomore, who is a minus-5 with just one point through six games. And maybe Toronto's not the best opponent for him to see. On opening night, in a 2-0 loss to the Leafs, Subban was a minus-2. More of the same, perhaps, is in store.

          History

Toronto and Montreal split six games last season, and the Canadiens went 2-1 at home. Six of the last seven meetings in this storied rivalry have gone under.

New York Rangers at Edmonton Oilers (110, 5)

The team without its home continues its road journey. The Rangers, still waiting to make their home debut in renovated Madison Square Garden, have played two games in Sweden, one on Long Island, and this will be the third of four in Canada before they get to touch the new ice in Manhattan next week.

          Hank the Tank

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist has had plenty of work and it hasn’t affected him a bit. In wins this week at Vancouver and at Calgary, Lundqvist allowed just two goals and made 73 saves, including a 4-0 shutout of the Canucks on Tuesday.

Thursday’s 3-2 overtime victory over the Flames was Lundqvist’s 36th consecutive start. His last day on the bench for coach John Tortorella was Feb. 11, 2011.

          Taylor time returns

Oilers forward Taylor Hall missed Tuesday’s 2-1 loss vs. Calgary because of flu-like symptoms, but returned Thursday and should be fine for Saturday.

Hall had one shot, 16 shifts and 14:21 minutes of ice time, as Edmonton dropped another heartbreaker, a 2-1 shootout loss to the Wild. Hall has a goal and three assists this season.

          Strong start off Broadway

Losing to the rival Islanders, 4-2, last Saturday had to sting, but it’s hard to argue with the Rangers’ start. Eager to erase a disheartening loss to Washington in the first round of the playoffs last season, New York has at least a point in four of this year’s five games.

The team’s marquee addition, forward Brad Richards, has been as good as advertised. He has four assists already, 14 shots on net, and points in all five of his games in Rangers' blue.

          History

If this is anything like last year’s contest, it should be entertaining. The Sunday matinee in New York last season was billed as “Kids Day," but perhaps should have been “Hide The Kids Day" as the Rangers trounced the Oilers, 8-2, in a game filled with cheap shots. Edmonton ended up with 81 minutes in penalties, while New York had 73. Five of Edmonton’s six games this year have gone under.

San Jose Sharks at Boston Bruins (-145, 5)

The Bruins broke out of their slump with a 6-2 win Thursday over Toronto. The defending Stanley Cup Champs got two power-play goals, equaling their total for the previous six games.

Boston scored a measly 11 goals in its first six games. So while coach Claude Julien shook up his lines and got an immediate payoff, let’s not assume all the offensive problems are solved.

The Sharks arrive in Boston on a back-to-back, having played at New Jersey on Friday. Going into that game, San Jose had scored a total of four goals in losing three straight.

The under is 6-1 in Boston’s games this season. Three of the last four San Jose-Boston meetings have produced three or fewer goals.

            Pick: Under

New York Islanders at Florida Panthers (-125, 5.5)

The Panthers are coming off two straight shutout losses.

“I don’t think we tried hard enough,” coach Kevin Dineen told the Miami Herald. “There are a lot of little things that go on during the course of a game. … That’s six periods in a row that we showed little snapshots here and there, but we’re a far way away from where we were four or five days ago. We need to address that and soon.

“We got outworked in our home building and that has some sting to it. It’s the first time for a lot of us who are new here. It’s got to stop right now.’’

Fortunately for Florida, up next are the Islanders, who fell 4-1 at Tampa Bay on Thursday. New York failed to get a shot on goal for nearly 13 minutes of the second period. For the game, the Islanders mustered 17 shots.

The Panthers have won eight of the last nine meetings at home, and 13 of 18 meetings overall.

            Pick: Panthers

Cardinals at Rangers - Game 3: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Texas Rangers (-182, 9.5)
              Series tied 1-1
              THE STORY
: The Texas Rangers avoided a potentially devastating two-game deficit with a historic rally in Game 2 and now seek to take a 2-1 lead in the World Series when they host the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. Texas scored two ninth-inning runs for a 2-1 victory on Thursday to even the series and become only the third team in World Series history to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the ninth inning or later and win the contest. The Rangers have the homefield advantage the next three games after splitting two games in St. Louis.
              TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, Fox.
WEATHER: There are thunderstorms in the forecast for Arlington Saturday, calling for a 30 percent chance of rain later in the evening.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Kyle Lohse (14-8, 3.39 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Matt Harrison (14-9, 3.39 ERA)
Lohse is 0-2 with a 7.45 ERA over 9 2/3 innings in two postseason starts. He is 3-3 with a 6.66 ERA in 12 career appearances (nine starts) against Texas. Lohse has allowed eight homers and has a 6.75 ERA in 28 career innings at Rangers Ballpark. Michael Young has three homers in 30 career at-bats against Lohse.
Harrison is 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA in three postseason appearances and allowed two runs in five innings in each of his two postseason starts. He has never pitched against St. Louis and most of the Cardinals’ starting players have never faced him.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS: With the series shifting to Texas and the designated hitter being used, Allen Craig will be in the starting lineup somewhere. Craig had the game-winning pinch hit in Game 1 and drove in the Cardinals’ only run in Game 2 with another pinch-hit single. David Freese scored the St. Louis run and extended his postseason hitting streak to 12 straight games. Albert Pujols is hitless in six at-bats. Jason Motte blew the save in Game 2 after converting five straight postseason opportunities.
ABOUT THE RANGERS: Sacrifice flies by Josh Hamilton and Young accounted for the two ninth-inning runs in Game 2 by Texas. Hamilton is 0-for-7 while being plagued by a groin injury. ALCS hero Nelson Cruz is just 1-for-6 in the World Series. Ian Kinsler had two hits in each of the first two games and had a key stolen base in the ninth inning of Game 2. The Rangers have just two extra-base hits – a homer by Mike Napoli and a double by Adrian Beltre.
              TRENDS:
              * Cardinals are 12-2 in their last 14 games following a loss.
              * Rangers are 5-0 in their last five playoff games as a favorite.
              * Under is 5-1 in Cardinals' last six World Series games.
              * Under is 5-0 in Rangers last five World Series games.
FINAL PITCH: The Cardinals and Rangers combined for just a total of eight runs in the National League ballpark – four by each team.

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bet
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Texas Rangers (-180, 9.5)

We’re not going to touch the side here as we don’t want to lay -180, even with lefty Matt Harrison on a nice roll.

These teams have combined for a total of eight runs through two games, and the Game 3 total is 9.5? Well, yes.

It will be a lot warmer in Texas. That should help Josh Hamilton a lot. And the DH will be back, enabling the Cards to get red-hot Allen Craig into the lineup.

St. Louis right-hander Kyle Lohse has given up eight earned runs and 13 hits in two postseason starts covering 9 2/3 innings. Game 2 offered evidence that the Cards’ bullpen isn’t invincible either.

The over is 8-1 in St. Louis’ last nine road games, and 9-1 in umpire Alfonso Marquez’s last 10 Rangers games behind the plate.

The over is also 20-7 in Texas’ last 27 home games against right-handed starters.

              Pick: Over

-- Lions covered nine of their last eleven at home.

-- Ravens covered five of last six Monday night games.

                  ******************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind..........

                  13) Week 7 of NFL has nine games with a pointspread of 4 or less points, but no games matching teams with winning records. Its weird to me that the word “pointspread” doesn’t get thru my spell check, because “thru” does. Go figure.

                  12) After a horrendous 48-12 loss at Arizona Thursday, a game that also included a brawl and two UCLA teammates fighting with each other after the brawl, it’s a safe bet that next fall we’ll have Rick Neuheisel, studio analyst on our TVs. Maybe even before next fall. It is inconceivable that he won’t get fired after that debacle in Tucson.

                  11) Aaron Rodgers’ brother gets his first start at QB for Vanderbilt this week, against Army, which is an easier way of breaking in that Christian Ponder got with the Vikings—his first NFL start is against the defending champ Packers.

                  10) By the way, Rodgers seems like a better guy than Brett Favre and maybe even a better player (eventually), but I like Favre’s Wrangler commercials better than that insurance commercial Rodgers did, the one that shows 30 times a day on DirecTV.

                  9) Bet the St Louis media is thrilled they won’t miss the Ram-Cowboy game Sunday, with the World Series being across the street from Jerry World. OK, maybe they’re not thrilled.

                  8) When do we find out if CC Sabathia opted out of the last four years (and $92M) of his contract with Bronx Bombers? After what Cliff Lee got last winter, its hard to believe he won’t opt out.

                  7) Rumors have the Red Sox willing to eat most of John Lackey’s remaining $45.5M (over three years) just to get him out of Boston, where he is now pretty much hated after Clubhouse-gate. San Diego could be a landing spot; Bud Black is Lackey’s old pitching coach from Anaheim.

                  6) ESPN’s Merrill Hoge had a good story this week about being in a college All-Star game and waiting for a shuttle bus from the airport with a bunch of players, one of whom was Jim Harbaugh. When told the shuttle was running late, everyone was cool except Harbaugh, who wigged out on the volunteer running things. Not everyone is a nice person, and to be honest, being nice isn’t a quality you need to be a winning coach.

                  5) This guy Jim Crane wants to buy the Astros, but he also wants the purchase price reduced by $50M because MLB wants the Astros to move to the American League. Crane figures with more West Coast games on TV (games from Seattle/Oakland replacing games in Chicago-St Louis-Milwaukee-Pittsburgh), he’ll get lower TV ratings and will lose some money that way. Or maybe he just saw the Astros play this year and figures he was overcharged in the first place.

                  4) Eldrick Woods is 121st on the PGA Money List this year; he was 68th last year and is currently ranked 55th in the world. Why is he on the Presidents’ Cup team? Greg Norman/Geoff Ogilvy tried to drum up interest in the event this week by criticizing Woods’ selection to the team, but they should be happy. It probably helps their team’s chances of winning.

                  3) Woods is also dangerously close to not being in the world’s top 64 players, which would bounce him from the Match Play tournament this coming winter. Imagine being the top-ranked player in the world and having to play Woods in the first round if he winds up as the #64 player? It could happen.

                  2) Good news for the Iona basketball team; Arizona transfer Momo Jones is eligible to play for the Gaels this season. He should be terrific in the MAAC. Funny how lot of kids who transfer suddenly come up with sick relatives. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.

                  1) Let me get this straight; Jed Hoyer worked for the Red Sox for seven years, then went to San Diego as GM, where he handed his friend Theo Epstein one of the best players in baseball, Adrian Gonzalez, for three prospects who aren't very good (top prospect Anthony Rizzo hit .141 this year. .141.) Casey Kelly was shaky in the Texas League this year, his second year at the AA level. In fairness, he is still pretty young. .

So had the Padres kept Gonzalez thru this season, and they could have, because his contract wasn't too expensive, then he would've walked this winter and San Diego would have gotten two #1 draft picks, but instead they've got Kelly-Rizzo-Fuentes, three Boston draft picks who haven't panned out yet.

Looks lot like Hoyer bailed his boy Theo out of a jam, then when Theo bolted for Wrigleyville, he plucked Hoyer to be his assistant. Again. Only they both have better titles now. The Padres still have the prospects that Hoyer stuck them with in exchange for Gonzalez. Doesn't seem right.

Logical wisdom is that switch to warmer Texas and adding DH figures to add some offense to World Series; first two games stayed under. Off day helps bullpens recharge. Lohse is 0-2, 5.54 in two playoff starts; he is 2-3, 4.63 in his last eight road starts. Harrison is 3-0, 2.52 in his last five starts, but he has a 9.00 RA in his last four home starts. Rangers won last four playoff games after losing 9-0 to Rays in playoff opener; St Louis is 4-2 on road, allowing 11-9 runs in two losses.
