Preview: Blues (2-3) at Kings (0-1)

    Date: October 18, 2011 10:30 PM EDT

The mood may not be too festive for the Los Angeles Kings in their long-awaited home opener.

They will be without All-Star defenseman Drew Doughty as they try to end a seven-game slide against the St. Louis Blues and earn their first win over Jaroslav Halak on Tuesday night.

Doughty, who signed an eight-year, $56 million contract last month, was placed on injured reserve Sunday with an upper-body injury sustained in a 3-2 overtime win at Philadelphia on Saturday. Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo leveled Doughty with a shoulder-to-chest hit 24 seconds into the contest.

Doughty, a former Norris Trophy finalist, missed almost all of training camp while negotiating the deal that put him among the NHL's highest-paid defensemen.

Los Angeles (2-1-1) will be the second-to-last team in the league to open at home. The Kings started the season with games in Stockholm and Berlin before playing twice on the East Coast.

"It's been a long time. We've been in Germany and Sweden. We've been in almost every time zone since the start of training camp," right wing Justin Williams said. "So it'll be nice to get home. I know everyone is looking forward to it."

The Kings may not be looking forward to facing Halak, who has gone 5-0-0 with a 1.20 GAA in five career starts against them - 3-0-0 with a 0.67 GAA last season.

The Blues' No. 1 goaltender, though, has struggled to an .848 save percentage and 3.05 GAA in four starts this season. He stopped 19 shots in a 4-2 loss at Anaheim on Sunday, allowing three goals in a five-minute span of the third period.

"I think we played a good 40 minutes,' Halak said. "Then in the third period, we killed the penalty and they scored right away on a lucky bounce for their guy. It seemed like they took over and they scored two more goals. It was too late for us to start playing again, and we just have to learn from it.'

Like Los Angeles, St. Louis will also be missing a top player, as the club placed center Andy McDonald on injured reserve Monday due to a concussion he sustained Thursday. McDonald missed 24 games with a concussion last season.

St. Louis (2-3-0) outscored Los Angeles 15-6 in four meetings last season. The Blues have won the last six matchups in regulation.

The Blues have lost two of three entering the finale of this road trip. They are 1 for 20 on the power play this season and have allowed at least one power-play goal in every game.

"We lose by two goals in our last two games on the specialty teams battle," captain David Backes said. "We need to be better there."

The Kings will be looking for a strong effort from Anze Kopitar, who has a team-high seven points this season but only four during the losing streak to the Blues. This will be Kopitar's first game at Staples Center since he suffered a season-ending ankle injury March 26.

Jonathan Quick has posted a 3.69 GAA in starting every game during the slide versus St. Louis.

Penguins limp into Minnesota Tuesday night

    PITTSBURGH PENGUINS (3-2-2, 8 points)

at MINNESOTA WILD (2-1-2, 6 points)

Puck drops: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
    Line: Pittsburgh -110, Minnesota -110, Total: 5.5

After a strong start to the season, the Penguins have dropped three straight while fighting the injury bug. Already without captain Sidney Crosby (concussion), Pittsburgh is also missing sniper Evgeni Malkin (knee), defenseman Brooks Orpik (hernia) and forward Tyler Kennedy (concussion).

Considering Pittsburgh’s dominance over the past four seasons, it’s somewhat surprising that the Wild are 3-0-1 in their past four meetings with the Pens—who last won at the Xcel Energy Center on October 30, 2007. With Marc-Andre Fleury starting in Monday’s 2-1 loss to Winnipeg, expect veteran backup Brent Johnson (0-0-2, 1.88 GAA) between the pipes for Pittsburgh. Johnson has posted terrific numbers against the Wild (1.60 GAA in 9 games—tied for his best average against any NHL team). Wild netminder Niklas Backstrom (2-1-1, 1.94 GAA) is off to a fantastic start this season, and he’s a perfect 3-0 all-time against the Pens (1.62 GAA, .949 SV Pct.). With the Penguins banged up and on their second road game on back-to-back nights, expect MINNESOTA to pick up the victory in a low-scoring, tight-checking game.

The FoxSheets also back the Wild with this trend.

MINNESOTA is 12-5 ATS (70.6%, +17.6 Units) after having lost 3 of their last 4 games over the last 2 seasons. The average score was MINNESOTA 3.3, OPPONENT 2.2 - (Rating = 1*).

When Crosby and Malkin are out of the lineup—as has been the case for the Penguins dating back to last February—Pittsburgh plays extremely tight defense and grinds opponents down to make up for its lack of scoring. Also, considering both goalies’ stellar statistics against the respective opponent, the UNDER (-130) is the strongest play in this game. The FoxSheets also like the Under:

PITTSBURGH is 53-37 UNDER (58.9%, +13.4 Units) in road games in all games over the last 2 seasons. The average score was PITTSBURGH 2.8, OPPONENT 2.5 - (Rating = 1*).

LW James Neal leads Pittsburgh with five goals, making the prospect of Malkin’s return (his usual center) all the more scary for future opponents. Puck-moving defenseman Kris Letang (team-high 7 points) has been Pittsburgh’s MVP so far this season, contributing on offense while logging a ton of minutes on the blue line—averaging 26:02 minutes per game.

The Penguins play a physical brand of hockey, dominating puck possession by keeping it deep in their opponent’s zone. Pittsburgh currently boasts the league’s best penalty kill, converting at an impressive 95.5% clip.

RW Guillaume Latendresse leads the Wild with four assists, and his linemate—veteran C Matt Cullen—has chipped in three goals; already a quarter of the way towards matching last year’s total of 12. RW Dany Heatley—acquired in a trade with San Jose this offseason—has also had a nice start with his new team, posting a goal and two assists for Minnesota.

The Wild currently rank ninth in the NHL in goals against, allowing an average of 2.2 per game to opponents. Minnesota trails surprise division leader Colorado by four points in the standings and would certainly welcome the victory Tuesday night to keep an early pace.

Tuesday’s betting tips: FIU struggles off the bye

      Who’s hot

NCAAF: Arkansas State is 5-1 against the spread this season.

NHL: Washington is 4-0 to start the season.

NHL: Buffalo has won five of its last seven games in Montreal.

      Who’s not

NCAAF: Florida International is 0-4 against the spread in their last four games following a bye.

NHL: Edmonton is 7-20-2 in its last 29 trips to Calgary.

NHL: Columbus is 0-4-1 to start the season.

      Key stat

13-7 – The over is a combined 13-7 in St. Louis and Texas’ postseason games heading into Wednesday’s Game 1 of the World Series.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jeff Carter, Columbus Blue Jackets – Carter suffered a hairline fracture on the top of his right foot Saturday and is currently questionable for Tuesday’s matchup with the Dallas Stars.

      Game of the day

Florida International at Arkansas State (-3, 55)

      Notable quotable

"This is going to be quite a big week for the club, with Manchester United [to play] at the weekend. We are aware of that game, and the situation at the top of the league, but first we have to take care of the Champions League match. Villarreal is all we can think about right now." – Manchester City’s David Villa ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League matchup with Villarreal. Man City has just one point in its first two Champs League contests and is set as a -435 favorite. A Villarreal victory is pegged at +1000 and the draw is at +400.

      Notes and tips

Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler is expected to make his season debut Tuesday against the New York Rangers. Kesler, who has been recovering from offseason hip surgery, practiced with the team Monday morning. The Canucks also opened a spot on the 23-man roster by sending defenseman Chris Tanev to Chicago of the AHL. Kesler underwent surgery to repair a torn hip labrum at the beginning of August. His recovery time was estimated at three months. Signed to a six-year extension worth $30 million in 2010, Kesler collected a career-high 42 goals, 32 assists and 66 penalty minutes last season. However, he suffered a groin tear and struggled during the Stanley Cup Finals against Boston, recording just one assist in seven games for the Presidents' Trophy-winning Canucks.

Chris Carpenter has been tabbed as the likely starter for the St. Louis Cardinals and will be opposed by Texas Rangers lefthander C.J. Wilson in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night. Carpenter was being saved in the event the National League Championship Series went to a seventh and deciding game. The Cardinals made sure that didn't happen, routing the Milwaukee Brewers 12-6 to wrap up the NLCS in six games. Wilson was hit hard in Thursday's start against Detroit, allowing six runs on eight hits in six innings. He also was rocked by Tampa Bay for eight runs in five innings in his playoff opener. Carpenter has been the best of a bad bunch for the Cardinals in the post-season, going 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts. St. Louis' other three starters - Jaime Garcia, Edwin Jackson and Kyle Lohse - are 1-4 with a collective 6.21 ERA in their eight appearances. Oddsmakers have the Cardinals listed as an early -120 favorite for Game 1, while Texas is a -175 series favorite.
