College football odds: Week 8 opening line report

It can't keep going this way, can it? The best teams in the country are covering the spread regardless of how high the numbers are oddsmakers are posting.

The top 10 teams in the AP poll are 17-1-1 and double-digit favorites are 28-8-1 both against the spread over the last two weeks. Alabama, LSU, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Boise State and Wisconsin are a combined 37-7-1 ATS this season.

Sportsbook managers are trying to adjust but the big faves in college football keep covering those monster spreads.

"Shame on us for not seeing the separation of talent sooner," MGM Mirage sportsbook manager Jay Rood told *********** heading into last Saturday's games.

Still, the books needed a late Kansas cover against the Sooners to prevent a historically awful day.

"Oklahoma covers and it could have been one or the worst Saturday ever," Hilton Las Vegas race and sportsbook director Jay Kornegay told *********** in an email Sunday morning.

You can bet the oddsmakers didn't want to experience another Saturday rooting for the underdogs in college football. The spreads are big and so are the stakes for BCS championship hopefuls.

We talked to Pete Korner, founder of the line consultant group Sports Club in Las Vegas, to find out his recommended spreads and compared them to the Wynn Las Vegas' opening numbers.

    Washington (+20) at Stanford

Andrew Luck and Co. struggled for a half vs. Washington State, but still recovered and blew the Cougars away by the end of the night. Not much value with the underdogs vs. Stanford when stuff like that happens.

“We’re going to take the highest number we can with Stanford the rest of the way,” said Korner, who recommended a spread three points larger to his clients. “At some of the other books in Reno and Tahoe, places close to Stanford and Northern California, they keep getting players coming over and betting Stanford, Stanford, Stanford. They don’t care what the number is. So, we’re going to keep erring on the side of the big favorites.”

    Auburn (+21) at LSU

Let the BCS posturing begin. With the standings out, LSU can continue its pursuit of style points against a rival.

“We keep getting burned by the favorites up on top of the rankings,” Korner said. “So, we had to go high. I think Auburn can cover it, but it won’t be easy.”

Korner sent out Auburn +20 while the Wynn posted Tigers -21 as their opening number. LSU was bet up a half point soon afterward.

Air Force (+29.5) at Boise State

More of the same for the Broncos, who as always, need bigger blowouts than the big boys of the SEC to stay in the mix. Korner and company sent out BSU +28.

“We went as high as we could go,” Korner said. “It’s all about how much do they want it. They most likely won’t let up.”

The Wynn went a little higher, going over the four TD-spread at 29.5.

    Tennessee (+27.5) at Alabama

Just goes to show you just how good these top-tier SEC teams are. Here’s a classic, southern rivalry, and the spread is almost four touchdowns.

“You would think in the SEC, these games would be close,” Korner said. “But not this year. The talent differential is glaring, and with these big teams, especially at home, it’s no contest.”

    Texas Tech (+25.5) at Oklahoma

Don’t forget about the Sooners, who just keep on trucking. Their schedule hasn’t worked in their favor, so they’re trying to make up for it with high scores.

“We’re starting to overvalue the favorites here. We have no choice,” Korner said. “This is a home game for Oklahoma, and too much on the line for them not to keep it going.”

    Wisconsin (-7) at Michigan State

The Spartans are an improved bunch, but they might be a tad hung over after exposing Michigan on Saturday. And surging Wisconsin might be out of their real-estate district anyhow. The Wynn posted a surprisingly low spread at Badgers -7 while Korner’s group sent out MSU +8.

“I would have liked it higher than 8, but didn’t want to put my personal feelings into it,” Korner said. “Both teams are playing well, and Michigan State might just be good enough to cover. But the spread might go up to 11 by then. We figure 8 is the right number for a road team in the Big Ten. But Wisconsin is really good.”

    UCLA (+4) at Arizona

With a week off and a new coach, Tim Kish, the defensive coordinator who will serve as interim after Mike Stoops was let go, there is a thought that a change will do the Wildcats some good.

“That, and we haven’t been impressed with UCLA,” Korner said. “With Arizona, there’s not much there, either. But we do believe there will be a renewed energy.”

Korner’s group sent out UCLA +5.5.

    West Virginia (-13.5) at Syracuse

The Mountaineers, the best of a bad conference, can truly start to flex their muscles now that the BCS standings are out.

“West Virginia is better than they’ve showed, and they’ll be coming off a week off, as well,” Korner said. “This will be theirs to win or lose. Syracuse won’t be able to put up much of a fight for too long.”

The Wynn’s opening number was the same as Korner’s recommendation to his client sportsbooks.

    North Carolina (+11) at Clemson

The darlings of the ACC, Clemson struggled some, but still had enough to get by Maryland and keep its perfect season intact. Las Vegas was watching.

“We were disappointed in Clemson a little,” said Korner, who sent out UNC +15. “But we think they can bounce back here. I thought they could really put up a big number here, so I wanted to take that into account.”

The Wynn got bet down to 9.5 almost immediately after opening Clemson -11.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Florida International at Arkansas State
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida International at Arkansas State (-3, 54)

Mid-week Sun Belt football is back, featuring a nationally televised matchup between a pair of teams trying to stay alive in the conference race.

Florida International was an early-season ATS dynamo, winning its first three games and covering the spread in each. But an injury to star wide receiver/kick returner T.Y. Hilton led to losses in two of the Golden Panthers’ last three, with their only win coming against an Akron team that is considered among the absolute worst in the nation. Hilton will play Tuesday.

The Golden Panthers haven’t covered the spread since upsetting Central Florida on Sept. 19 and must travel to Jonesboro, Ark., as short road dogs.

Arkansas State has played well for first-year coach Hugh Freeze and has covered in five of six. The Red Wolves bounced back from a bad loss at Western Kentucky with a solid road conference win at Louisiana-Monroe on Oct. 8.

                THE LINE

Arkansas State opened as a 2.5-point favorite Sunday at the Las Vegas Wynn. Early money came in on the Red Wolves, pushing the number to as high as 3.5. The number had settled back at -3 as of Monday afternoon.

                STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

Florida International boasts a balanced offensive attack, orchestrated by quarterback Wes Carroll, a transfer from Mississippi State. The Golden Panthers average 248 passing yards and 156 on the ground. They’re not only excellent at getting to the passer (2.83 sacks, 19th nationally), but they also protect Carroll well, allowing just over one sack per game (32nd nationally).

Protecting the quarterback will be key, as Arkansas State also ranks high in sacks (2.67, 22nd). The Red Wolves, however, have been susceptible to pressure and are surrendering more than two sacks (2.17, 73rd). Of course, they throw it a lot, too, with junior quarterback Ryan Aplin. His favorite target is Josh Jarboe, a highly-touted recruit, who originally signed with Oklahoma.

Arkansas State is 15th in passing offense at 303.5 yards, tops in the Sun Belt.

                INJURIES

Hilton, arguably the best pro prospect in the conference, appeared to be back at full strength in the win over Akron. He caught 12 passes for 144 yards against the Zips for his fourth 100-yard receiving game this season.

The Golden Panther also expect a boost from the return of wide out Jacob Younger, who missed the Akron game.

Arkansas State is reporting no injuries.

                LAST MEETING

Carroll connected on a 42-yard touchdown pass to Hilton with less than two minutes to play, lifting the Golden Panthers to a 31-24 win over Arkansas State. Florida International held Aplin to just 126 yards passing in the win.

                TRENDS

Florida International is 1-8 ATS in its last nine October games.

Florida International is 9-13 ATS as a road dog under coach Mario Cristobal.

Florida International is 0-3 all-time in Jonesboro.

The Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings, with the games averaging 44.6 points.

The Under is 7-1 in Red Wolves’ last eight.

Arkansas State is 10-20 ATS in its last 30 conference games.

Instant replay: NCAAF and NFL betting recap

Each week, we recap all the betting information you need to know from the college and pro football action that went down over the weekend.

We knew it had to happen eventually, and finally after five weeks, the NFL’s over bettors had a bad day. With oddsmakers boosting totals to coincide with the rash of offense we have seen, sharp under bettors jumped at some overinflated numbers.

Meanwhile, the best teams in college football continue to make life miserable for bookmakers. If you’re having a tough time finding another team for a parlay ticket, you might as well start looking at The Associated Press poll’s top 10.

                  NCAAF betting recap

Over the past two weeks, the top 10 teams in the AP poll are a combined 17-1-1 against the spread. That’s an absolute kick in the pants to sportsbooks. However, favorites were only 23-26-1 overall last week with away underdogs checking in at 16-12-1 against the number while 17 underdogs won outright.

As teams like Wisconsin, LSU, Boise State and Alabama all cruised to comfortable wins while covering the number, South Carolina supporters who had their club at -3.5 had no such luck. The Gamecocks held a 14-10 lead with just seconds left on the clock when USC quarterback Connor Shaw took a shotgun snap deep in his own territory and promptly trotted out the back of the end zone to take the intentional safety.

Final score: South Carolina 14, Mississippi State 12. Now that’s a bad beat.

That game was also one of a whack of games that played under the total this week. The under ended up 27-19.

                  NFL betting recap

For the first time this season, the under is the big story on Monday morning. Nine of Sunday’s 12 contests played under the total.

The only games that played over were Cincinnati’s 27-17 win over Indy (40-point total), the Giants’ dramatic victory over Buffalo and Chicago’s blowout of Minnesota on Sunday night.

Heading into Monday night’s game between Miami and the New York Jets, about 58 percent of this season’s games have played over the total.

Favorites ended up going 7-4-1 on the day and only two underdogs took home outright wins. Away teams took it on the chin as well, going 2-10 straight up.

                    Armadillo's Write-Up

                    Thursday, October 20

Central Florida won six of last seven games vs UAB, winning last three here by 7-14-6 points; Knights won LY's game 42-7. Underdogs are 4-3 vs spread in series games, 1-3 in C-USA conference games, 0-3 if spread is double digits. UCF lost three of last four games, scoring 17 or less in all four games- they're 0-3 SU on road this year, but covered six of last eight games as a road favorite. UAB is 0-6 but covered three of last four games; four of their six losses are by 17+ points.

Arizona already fired its coach, which normally dooms a season; they've won last four games vs UCLA, all by 7+ points, winning last three here by 14-7-38 points. Wildcats outrushed UCLA 473-136 last two times they met, but this year, Arizona lost last five games, giving up 43 ppg, so Stoops was canned. Bruins allowed 25+ points in their three wins, 38-49-45 in three losses. Pac-10 home favorites of less than 15 points are 2-5 vs spread in conference play.

Central Florida at UAB: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Central Florida Knights at UAB Blazers (+16, 44.5)

The winless Blazers host the Knights for a Thursday night, C-USA showdown at Legion Field. Alabama-Birmingham has just one win over UCF in their last seven meetings and is 2-5 against the spread in that span, going back to 2001.

                      LINE MOVES

Oddsmakers opened with the home side set as a two-touchdown underdog, with money on UCF pushing the spread as high as 16.5. The total opened at 44 and has climbed as high as 45.5.

                      KNIGHT AND DAY

Central Florida boasts one of the best defenses in the country, currently ranked No. 3 in yards allowed and passing defense. However, that stop unit took one on the chin in last week’s 38-17 loss to Southern Methodist.

The Knights allowed SMU to pass for 358 yards and two touchdowns through the air – the most amount of passing yardage allowed to a conference foe since facing Houston in 2009.

"This is very frustrating because we're not used to this," cornerback Josh Robinson told the Central Florida Future. "We expect more out of our defense."

Luckily for UCF, the Blazers passing game isn’t as potent as SMU’s. Alabama-Birmingham puts up just over 209 passing yards per game and has a TD-to-INT count of 2-to-8 this season.

Blazers quarterback Bryan Ellis threw two scores and two picks in his return from a concussion in a 37-20 loss to Tulsa last weekend. Ellis had been out since September 24, with backup Jonathan Perry under center in his absence.

                      DEAD WITHOUT SHED

The Blazers will be without leading rusher Pat Shed Thursday. He injured his knee in the loss to Tulsa last week and will definitely not play against the Knights.

Shed leads UAB with 223 yards on the ground and one touchdown. He’s also caught the ball 23 times for 146 yards receiving.

Sophomore running back Greg Franklin will get the majority of carries in his place. Franklin has rushed 20 times for 129 yards this season.

                      QB CONTROVERSY

There is trouble brewing in Orlando at the quarterback position.

Starter Jeff Godfrey is under fire for his run-first mentality, with the local media and UCF faithful believing redshirt freshman Blake Bortles is the better fit for the Knights' pocket-passing schemes, and that the speedy Godfrey should be moved to receiver.

Godfrey is passing for 186.3 yards an outing while rushing for a total of 224 yards and eight touchdowns – the most of any QB in C-USA. He passed for 231 yards versus SMU, throwing one touchdown before giving way to Bortles, who went 9 for 12 for 118 yards and a score. The combined 349 yards passing was the most from UCF since 2003.

Bortles is also the prototypical QB, standing 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds, while Godfrey is only 5-foot-11 and 182 pounds soaking wet. However, despite the brewing controversy, UCF head coach George O'Leary confirmed that this is still Godfrey’s team.

"Jeff made a lot of good throws and made some yards with his feet," O'Leary told reporters. "But Blake has more opportunity to throw down the field. We have to sit down and see what the best situation for our team. But we have to get Blake in more often."

Alabama-Birmingham shouldn’t be too much of a test for whichever QB is calling the plays Thursday. The Blazers rank 111th in the land in pass defense, giving up an average of 292.2 yards through the air.

                      Spread it on

There is betting value in an 0-6 Blazers squad, especially up against a UCF team that is 0-4 ATS in their last four outings.

Despite a big zero in the win column, UAB has covered the spread the last four games, facing an average spread of nearly +18 in that stretch. The Blazers have dropped the last four games by an average margin of 10.25 points.

But a short week of practice may slow down the money train for UAB backers. In their last six Thursday contests, the Blazers are only 1-4-1 ATS.

"It's kind of an awkward week with preparation all around," head coach Neil Callaway told the media. "Technically, today is Thursday in terms of game preparation. We did a little more just because of time. We'll come back out tomorrow and treat it pretty much like a Friday."

Callaway is on the hot seat at Alabama-Birmingham after the team’s poor start. He’s 15-38 since taking over the Blazers in 2007. Plenty of fans are calling for his job heading into this Thursday’s action.

                      Trends

                      * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                      * Knights are 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings.
                      * Knights are 16-6 ATS in their last 22 games as favorites.
                      * Blazers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven conference games.

UCLA at Arizona: What bettors need to know
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UCLA Bruins at Arizona Wildcats (-4, 62)

                        THE STORY
: It was only a matter of time that Arizona’s failures would cost coach Mike Stoops his job. After five straight losses the ax fell a week ago, ending Stoops’ 7½ years with the program. Stoops had some success but lately failed to maintain the program’s image, the Desert Swarm defense. Arizona ranks last in the Pac-12 in just about every important defensive category. Defensive coordinator Tim Kish makes his interim-coaching debut against Rick Neuheisel, another coach on the hot seat, when Arizona hosts UCLA in a nationally-televised conference battle in the Desert Thursday night.

                        TV: ESPN

LINE MOVES: The Wildcats opened as 3.5-point favorites and have climbed as high as 4.5 The total opened at 61.5 and has risen to 62.

ABOUT UCLA (3-3, 2-1 Pac-12, 1-5 ATS): The Bruins have done more flip-flopping than a GOP presidential candidate lately. Unsettled at quarterback, the Bruins have gone back-and-forth with Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut. That rotation has certainly come to an end following the broken leg Brehaut suffered last game. Prince will be back under center against the Wildcats after leading UCLA to a come-from-behind 28-25 win over Washington State in its last outing. But no matter who’s throwing the ball, the Bruins would like to run behind Johnathan Franklin (2,092 career yards) and Derrick Coleman, who have powered UCLA to the 28th best rushing attack in the country. They’ve scored at least one rushing TD in 12 straight games.

ABOUT ARIZONA (1-5, 0-4 Pac-12, 2-4 ATS): The Wildcats seemed headed toward the top of the conference after starting last season 7-1. But since then Arizona has lost 10 of its last 11 games. A 37-27 setback to a then-winless Oregon State team on Oct. 8 proved to be Stoops’ last stand. The Wildcats have beaten UCLA the last three times in the desert and still have a solid offense led by quarterback Nick Foles and his talented receivers. Foles has thrown for 2,250 yards on the season, second best in the nation, and 15 touchdowns. Arizona’s running-game, however, is a mess, a victim of a young offensive line. It ranks next-to-last in the country averaging just 71 yards a game.

                        EXTRA POINTS:

                        1. Arizona defeated UCLA 29-21 last season in a game played at the Rose Bowl. The Wildcats have won the last four in the series.

                        2. Explosive Wildcat WR Juron Criner is questionable with a knee sprain.

                        3. The Wildcats have surrendered at least 37 points in its last five games.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Favorite is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
                        * Home team is 6-2 ATS in their last eight meetings.
                        * Bruins are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings.
                        * Bruins are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings in Arizona.

PREDICTION: Arizona 31, UCLA 28 -- Don’t expect too much defense in this one, but Foles should be able to carve up the Bruins in the air in a tight contest at Tucson.

Where the action is: Mid-week football line moves

For our weekly look at football lines on the move, we chatted up Todd Fuhrman, race and sportsbook analyst at Caesar's in Las Vegas. Here are some thoughts about why these odds are jumping around.

                          NCAAF

                          Rutgers at Louisville +1.5 ---> -2

Rutgers heads into this one riding a 5-1 run both against the spread and straight up, but the team's lone loss was on the road at North Carolina. Meanwhile, Louisville has dropped three straight but has covered in three of its last four.

"This is a Louisville team which drew a ton of wiseguy action last week against Cincinnati and it looks to be more of the same this week," Fuhrman says. "The Cardinal have shown steady improvement this year and the university has shown faith in Charlie Strong by adding seven years to his deal. Rutgers has been a pleasant surprise but I'm not sure they were ready to be road chalk."

Western Michigan at Eastern Michigan +14 ---> +12

Western Michigan was tearing through pointspreads until meeting up with Northern Illinois last week, taking a 51-22 beating as a 1.5-point underdog. Eastern Michigan is just coming off an outright upset victory at Central Michigan as an 11-point underdog.

"Western Michigan limped to the finish last week against NIU and bettors seem to think this may continue Saturday," Fuhrman says. "Eastern Michigan has quietly surprised behind the strength of their run-based offense. Their ability to shorten games is a huge advantage when you're catching double digits at home."

                          Utah at California -2.5 ---> -1.5 ---> -3

Who knows what Utah is going to show this week? The Utes are 3-9 against the number in their last 12 but showed some moxie last week at Pitt.

"Utah is one of the tougher teams to figure out for bettors and bookies alike," Fuhrman says. "The team responded well last week at Pittsburgh with news QB Jordan Wynn would be lost for the year but it was their defense, not offense, that got the job done. Cal was a huge disappointment last Thursday hosting USC so expect coach Tedford to expect a much better effort with the extra prep time."

                          NFL

San Diego at New York Jets -1.5 --->+1

So are the Jets really this bad to see this type of movement against a Chargers team that is just 2-6-1 in its last nine games as a road favorite. The Chargers are only 1-5 against the number in the last six meetings between these two clubs.

"In my opinion this is one of the market's biggest over reactions to a sluggish Jets performance on Monday," Fuhrman says. "Sanchez is a streaky QB who needs confidence to be successful and looked to find his stride in the second half. However, the Chargers come in rested off a bye and may get Antonio Gates back this week. This could be one of the most heavily bet games of the weekend and I can make strong cases for both sides."

St. Louis at Dallas -10.5 --->-12.5

This one's pretty obvious - nobody wants to bet St. Louis and probably rightfully so.

"This number climbed amid speculation that Sam Bradford might not start for the Rams but as of today he's been upgraded to probable," Fuhrman says. "Right now it's been downright impossible to find people willing to bet St Louis so this week will be no different. My biggest question is can the Rams outscore their baseball brethren Cardinals this week since they couldn't last Sunday?"

                          Denver at Miami -3 ---> -1.5

Has Tim Tebow mania gotten the better of oddsmakers or does everybody just hate the Dolphins? Maybe both.

"Another knee-jerk reaction from the market given how bad the Dolphins looked against the Jets," Fuhrman says. "The Broncos suddenly have quite a buzz around them with Tebow under center and may trend upward over the back half of their season while Miami appears content to play out the stretch and focus on the future with a little Luck."

                          Chicago at Tampa Bay over/under 42 ---> 44

Every year the NFL sends a game to Europe and every year we see that game's line on the move. So far the spread is holding steady around Tampa Bay +1, but there has been some movement on the total.

" The biggest question betting a total for the annual NFL in London event is field conditions," Fuhrman says. "We've seen the traditional soccer stadium have problems in the past holding up in the trenches because of excessive rain. Hard to decipher this line move given both teams come into this game fresh off their most complete efforts of the season against divisional rivals."

College football Top 25 betting cheat sheet: Week 8

West Virginia Mountaineers at Syracuse Orange (+13.5, 58)

Why West Virginia will cover: West Virginia averages 380 yards through the air, while Syracuse ranks 114th in pass defense. The team is 3-1 ATS in its last four, while SU is 1-3.

Why Syracuse will cover: The defense has been inconsistent, but will finally get healthy for the first time this week. The offense hasn’t been great, but finds ways to score.

Points: The over has hit in the Mountaineers’ last five games and is 3-1 in the Orange’s last four.

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Missouri Tigers (+6.5, 68.5)

Why Oklahoma State will cover: OSU is No. 2 in scoring (49.2 ppg) and in passing (396 ypg), while slowing the pass is Mizzou’s biggest weakness. The Cowboys are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 overall.

Why Missouri will cover: Missouri is 0-3 on the road, but 3-0 at home, and is 6-2 ATS in its last eight at home.

Points: The over is 4-1 in Missouri’s last five and 2-1-1 in OSU’s last four. Both have the offenses to put up big numbers.

North Carolina Tar Heels at Clemson Tigers (-10, 57.5)

Why North Carolina will cover: The Heels have been successful thanks to a defense ranked 24th in points allowed. The offense does just enough.

Why Clemson will cover: Clemson is 6-1 ATS, including 5-0 in its last five. The offense ranks in the top 30 in every category.

Points: The over is 6-2 in Clemson’s last eight, but the under is 9-2 in its last 11 ACC games.

Illinois Fighting Illini at Purdue Boilermakers (+4, 47)

Why Illinois will cover: Illinois has shut down the opposition, allowing just 17.7 ppg (17th), while an offense that averages 210 ypg on the ground wears down defenses.

Why Purdue will cover: Purdue stays in games by running the ball effectively (24th) while slowing opponents. Just one foe has scored more than 24 points.

Points: Purdue is 2-0-2 with the over in its last four, and the over is 7-1 in Illinois’ last eight in the Big Ten. Both teams have been led by their defenses, though.

Kansas State Wildcats at Kansas Jayhawks (+10.5, 62.5)

Why Kansas State will cover: KU’s defense ranks worst in the nation in points allowed (49 ppg). K-State’s rushing attack should eventually wear down the Jayhawks, just as Oklahoma did last week. KSU is 5-0 ATS in its last five.

Why Kansas will cover: KU showed heart against a powerful Sooners squad, and has an offense – averaging more than 200 yards passing and rushing per game – to never be out of a game.

Points: The over has been big for both teams all season.

Arkansas Razorbacks at Mississippi Rebels (+16, 56)

Why Arkansas will cover: Arkansas averages 337 ypg through the air, and Ole Miss hasn’t been able to score on anyone of note. The team is 4-2 ATS.

Why Mississippi will cover: Ole Miss has been decent against the pass, and Arkansas has struggled against the run (93rd). If the Rebels can get an early lead, we could be in for a surprise.

Points: The over is 3-1 for the Razorbacks’ last four and has hit in the Rebels’ last two.

Boston College Eagles at Virginia Tech Hokies (-21, 43.5)

Why Boston College will cover: With three losses by single digits, the Eagles aren’t has terrible as their 1-5 record suggests. VT has been erratic, especially offensively.

Why Virginia Tech will cover: Va. Tech is 14th in scoring defense and eighth in rushing defense, and B.C. is struggling to score as it is. The Hokies were 0-5 ATS in their last five before blowing out Wake Forest, so maybe it’s the start of a new trend.

Points: The under is 1-5 in B.C. games, and hit four straight for VT games before the last two weeks (both over).

Oregon Ducks at Colorado Buffaloes (+32, 66.5)

Why Oregon will cover: Oregon averages 315 yards rushing (fifth) and nearly 49 ppg (third). Colorado may not know what hit it by halftime.

Why Colorado will cover: The Buffs have struggled, but that’s a big spread, especially for a team that plays games which hit the under more often than not. And they’re 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 at home. The availability of Oregon RB LaMichael James and QB Darron Thomas is in question.

Points: How powerful Oregon’s offense will be depends on the health of its stars.

Texas A&M Aggies at Iowa State Cyclones (+20, 65.5)

Why Texas A&M will cover: Texas A&M has a multifaceted offense that ranks among the nation’s best in every category. Iowa State can’t stop the run or pass. Do the math.

Why Iowa State will cover: Texas A&M has allowed 45 and 55 points in its last two games, opening up the possibility a weakness has been exposed.

Points: The over has hit in the last three games for both teams.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Miami Hurricanes (-2.5, 62)

Why Georgia Tech will cover: The Jackets are in a bit of a slump, but still 4-2-1 ATS and rank No. 2 in rush yards (348 ypg). Miami is 94th in rush yards allowed.

Why Miami will cover: Georgia Tech was 4-0-1 ATS early, but 0-2 recently. Meanwhile, Miami was 1-3 ATS to start but 2-0 since. The Canes are in full form after the early season suspensions.

Points: The under is a big hit in Miami home games the last several years, is 6-2 in GT’s last eight in the ACC and is 6-2 in these teams’ last eight meetings.

Auburn Tigers at LSU Tigers (-22.5, 46.5)

Why Auburn will cover: LSU will be without star CB Tyrann Mathieu, RB Spencer Ware, and DB Tharold Simon, who were suspended one game for violating the team’s drug policy. Auburn is improving by leaps and bounds every week, thanks mostly to a defense that held Florida to six points last week.

Why LSU will cover: The Tigers are steamrolling everyone, with a defense that ranks in the top 15 in every major category and an offense that pounds opponents to a pulp. They are very deep and can absorb the hit from those suspensions. Auburn’s offense, by the way, is giving a sophomore QB his first career start.

Points: The under is 4-0 in Auburn’s last four, and nobody goes off on LSU’s defense.

Air Force Falcons at Boise State Broncos (-30.5, 64.5)

Why Air Force will cover: The Falcons can gash opponents not ready for their style (336 ypg, third). That’s a big spread against a team that will drain the clock.

Why Boise State will cover: Boise State can score at will on anybody and Air Force has one of the nation’s worst defenses. Plus, the Broncos are 24th against the run.

Points: The under is 7-2 in BSU’s last nine in conference. But every AFA game has hit the over, and Boise State can score as quickly as anybody.

Nebraska Cornhuskers at Minnesota Golden Gophers (24.5, 56.5)

Why Nebraska will cover: While neither team has a defense worth worrying about, Nebraska at least has an offense to pour on the points (22nd in scoring). Minnesota, with a 109th-ranked offense, is 2-4 ATS.

Why Minnesota will cover: The Huskers are only 1-5 ATS. The Gophers have shown the ability to run the ball, and Nebraska is 74th at stopping it.

Points: The over has hit in four of NU’s last five games and in the Gophers’ last four.

Marshall Thundering Herd at Houston Cougars (-22, 59.5)

Why Marshall will cover: Despite a 3-4 overall record, Marshall is 5-2 ATS.

Why Houston will cover: The Cougars throw it more than anyone else, No. 1 in pass yards (435.5) and No. 4 in points (47.0). The Herd is No. 73 in passing defense and its offense ranks 99th or worse in everything.

Points: The under is 6-1 in Herd games, but is 2-4 for Houston.

Penn State Nittany Lions at Northwestern Wildcats (4, 47.5)

Why Penn State will cover: The Lions are finding ways to win with a defense ranking sixth overall and seventh against the pass. The Wildcats are swooning, losers of four straight.

Why Northwestern will cover: Penn State may win, but it is just 1-8 ATS in its last nine.

Points: The under is 6-0-1 in PSU games, but the over has hit in Northwestern’s last three.

Tennessee Volunteers at Alabama Crimson Tide (-28.5, 45.5)

Why Tennessee will cover: That can seem like an awfully high spread against a competent Vols squad, especially one that has a half-decent defense and an offense that averages 294 yards through the air.

Why Alabama will cover: The Tide is 7-1 ATS, the lone loss being a 47-point spread to North Texas (W, 41-0). Bama will score 30, but can Tennessee score at all against the No. 1 defense?

Points: Bama had held four of its seven opponents to seven points or fewer, and nobody has more than 14. The Tide may have to practically cover it alone.

Texas Tech Red Raiders at Oklahoma Sooners (-28.5, 69.5)

Why Texas Tech will cover: That’s an awfully big spread for a team averaging 43.8 points (ninth) and 372 yards passing (sixth). Tech is 4-2 ATS.

Why Oklahoma will cover: TTU has no shot at stopping OU’s offense, but the Sooners also have a defense that allows just 15.8 ppg.

Points: The over hit on Tech’s last five games and three of OU’s last four. We’ll see some scoring here.

Washington Huskies at Stanford Cardinal (-20.5, 61)

Why Washington will cover: This is a big statement game for the Huskies, and they have the offense to make it interesting. The Huskies are 5-0 ATS in their last five.

Why Stanford will cover: The Cardinal are the most reliable around, a perfect 6-0 ATS. Stanford has the No. 5 scoring offense and No. 5 scoring defense. It is ranked 14th in passing, while Washington is 116th in pass defense.

Points: Despite two high-octane offenses, the under has been hitting for both teams so far.

Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan State Spartans (8, 47.5)

Why Wisconsin will cover: The Badgers are 5-0-1 ATS because their offense is No. 1 in scoring (50.7 ppg) and the defense is No. 3 (9.7). That’s a tough combo to tackle.

Why Michigan State will cover: If anyone can slow UW’s offensive juggernaut, it may be MSU, which ranks No. 3 in run defense (67 ypg) and No. 1 against the pass (119). The offense has enough juice at least stay close.

Points: The under is 5-1 for MSU games, but 2-4 for UW. And the over is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
