Sunday’s betting tips: Romo looks to shred Pats’ defense

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Redskins are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight overall and 5-1-1 in their last seven against the NFC.

NFL: The Bengals are 7-1 ATS in their last eight overall and 7-0 ATS in their last seven against the AFC.

MLB: The over is 7-1 in the Cardinals’ last eight road games and 8-2 in the Brewers’ last 10 home games.

CFL: The under is 5-0 in BC’s last five road games and 5-1 in Saskatchewan’s last six overall.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Falcons are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.

NFL: The Browns are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight overall and 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight against the AFC.

MLB: The Brewers are 1-5 in Shaun Marcum’s last six starts and 0-5 in his last five home starts.

CFL: The over is 0-5 in Montreal’s last five home games.

    Key stat

326.6 – Average number of pass yards per game surrendered by the Patriots through Week 5, dead last in the entire NFL. That’s not good news for New England heading into Sunday’s home game against Dallas. The Cowboys are third in the NFL in passing offense at 331.0 yards per contest. Despite his yardage totals, Tony Romo threw three interceptions in his last outing against Detroit prior to Dallas’ bye week.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Talk about adding insult to injury—or the other way around. Not only did the Bucs lose to San Francisco 48-3 in Week 5, but they also lost defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (ankle). McCoy has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against New Orleans.

That's bad news for a Tampa Bay defense that ranks 23rd overall in the NFL, including 23rd against the run and 20th against the pass. If the Saints’ rushing attack gets going early without McCoy in the middle, the airwaves will open for Drew Brees and company.

    Biggest games on the slate

San Francisco 49ers at Detroit Lions (-4, 46)

New Orleans Saints at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4.5, 49.5)

    Notable quotable

“We’re not concerned about what their record is. We're more concerned about the fact that they're coming off a bye week. Anybody in this league that has two weeks to prepare for you definitely creates a bigger challenge. That's the message, and that's our focus.” – Green Bay Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy on his undefeated team’s home game against winless St. Louis. Green Bay is a 14-point favorite over the Rams.

    Tips and notes

Cleveland has won four of its last five meetings with Oakland and is 5-0 ATS in the last five head-to-head encounters between the AFC foes. The trend could continue because the Raiders are at risk of an emotional letdown after last week’s dramatic victory and they are dealing with a smorgasbord of injuries. For the Browns, Peyton Hillis—and the rest of the team—will be well-rested following a Week 5 bye.

Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder are just 5-for-25 combined lifetime against Edwin Jackson, with no home runs. Some other Crew members, though, could do some damage in Game 6. Jerry Hairston Jr. is 6-for-11 against Jackson, Corey Hart is 5-for-9, and the most hated man in St. Louis—Nyjer Morgan—is 5-for-9 with a homer. Jackson lasted 4 1-3 innings in Game 2 at Miller Park.

The L.A. Galaxy have gone 11 straight games against Chivas USA without losing, dating all the way back to 2007. Landon Donovan and company are 7-0-4 in that span heading into Sunday’s game. All signs point to more of the same taking place, as Los Angeles has already wrapped up the best regular-season record in the MLS. The Galaxy are also looking to become the first team in MLS history to go undefeated at home for an entire season (11-0-5 up to this point).

Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 16 odds and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Montreal Alouettes (-7.5, 56)

The Alouettes are in first place tie with the Blue Bombers, and a win would secure at least a playoff home game in Montreal.

The secondary of the Tiger Cats is once again depleted by injuries. Jason Shivers, Milt Collins and Carlos Thomas are all doubtful for this game. That means newly-acquired CB Dee Webb might have to move to the half-back position on the short side, where he will have the mission to contain SB Jamal Richardson. That is far from an ideal scenario for Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator Corey Chamblin.

On offense, Hamilton goes as well or as bad as Kevin Glenn goes. Glenn’s QB rating has been of 118.3 in his seven wins but is only 69.2 in seven losses. So it’s not surprising to hear head coach Marcel Bellefeuille warn that while Glenn is still his number one QB, we’ll see more of Quinton Porter in the upcoming weeks.

      Pick: Montreal

      B.C. Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (+8.5, 48)

Darian Durant is dinged up and we saw last week that neither Ryan Dinwiddie nor Cole Berquist has the right stuff to replace him anytime soon. Despite a broken bone on his left foot, Durant vows he will be starting this week and through the remainder of this season.

The Roughriders have not scored an offensive touchdown in more than three games and the club’s offensive line has to take a lot of the blame. Saskatchewan’s quarterbacks have been sacked twice and picked off three times in the last two games.

The Lions’ offense is hitting on all cylinders with Travis Lulay improving each week while the defense remains solid. The only concern comes with special teams. That unit conceded 299 yards to Calgary last week.

Last time the Lions and the Riders squared off, B.C. easily won 42-5. Besides the support of the loudest fans in the league, the Riders might face another humbling outcome this time around.

      Pick: B.C.

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bet
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Anaheim Ducks (-140, 5.5)

After a solid regular season with 99 points in 2010-11, the Ducks are off to a respectable start for their 2011-12 campaign. They are 2-1 and riding a two-game streak into Sunday's contest against St. Louis.

Anaheim compiled a stellar 26-13-2 home record last season; considerably better than its road clip. The trend seems to be continuing this time around, with the Ducks already 2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road.

In his two starts at the Honda Center, Jonas Hiller has stopped 45 shots and allowed only one goal. The results were a 2-1 shootout victory over the Rangers followed by a 1-0 shutout of San Jose.

Anaheim should have an edge in the fatigue department. After Friday's win over the Sharks, the Ducks had Saturday off. St. Louis, meanwhile, played at San Jose late on Saturday night and will be making a quick turnaround.

        Pick: Ducks

Cardinals at Brewers - Game 6: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (-130, 8.5)

          St. Louis leads series 3-2

          THE STORY
: The St. Louis Cardinals can’t seem to get a starter into the sixth inning during the National League Championship Series. But with the bullpen cruising right along, that hasn’t mattered. Cardinals relievers lowered their ERA to 1.66 in the series with 4 1/3 scoreless innings in Game 5, helping St. Louis to a 7-1 victory and a 3-2 lead in the series. Despite the hole, the Milwaukee Brewers can be confident with the series shifting back to Miller Park on Sunday for Game 6.

          TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: The forecast for Miller Park is calling for winds of speeds up to 13 mph, blowing west out to center field. However, the elements could be shutout if the roof is closed.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Edwin Jackson (0-0, 4.15 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Shaun Marcum (0-1, 11.25 ERA).

Jackson made it through 4 1/3 innings in Game 2, allowing two runs on seven hits before giving way to the bullpen in an eventual 12-3 St. Louis win. The righthander’s lone mistake was a two-run homer surrendered to Rickie Weeks in the fourth.

Marcum was not quite as effective in Game 2. The 29-year old was touched for five runs in four innings and had a hard time retiring Albert Pujols, who homered and hit a two-run double off Marcum. In his last three starts including the regular season, Marcum has a 12.83 ERA.

ABOUT THE CARDINALS: Part of the reason St. Louis had such a large deficit to overcome down the stretch was because the bullpen blew 26 saves during the regular season, most of them in the first half. Things have been different in the NLCS, as manager Tony La Russa has used his bullpen for at least 12 outs in each game. Milwaukee threatened to rally in the eighth inning on Friday but La Russa got through Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Weeks with three different relievers.

ABOUT THE BREWERS: Milwaukee has gotten only one quality start of its own - a Game 4 win from Randy Wolf - and came out flat in Game 5. The Brewers committed four errors, leading to three unearned runs off starter Zack Greinke. Owner of the best home record in baseball during the regular season, Milwaukee has ace Yovani Gallardo set up for Game 7 if it can find a way to squeeze out a win on Sunday.

          TRENDS:

          * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Milwaukee.
          * Cardinals are 4-1 in the last five meetings in Milwaukee.
          * Over is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings.
          * Cardinals are 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.

FINAL PITCH: The Cardinals have won five of their last seven at Miller Park, including a 12-3 victory in Game 2.

          Sunday, October 16

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bet
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (-130, 8.5)

The Brewers can only hope that Shaun Marcum's most recent starts are the aberration as opposed to the rule. In two outings (one each against Arizona and St. Louis), the veteran right-hander has pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing 14 hits and 12 earned runs while striking out just four batters.

In Game 2, the previous contest between Marcum and Cardinals' starter Edwin Jackson, St. Louis dominated 12-3.

There is, however, reason to think that things could be different on Sunday. Marcum also got rocked in his first regular-season effort against the Cardinals, but his second and third attempts were far more fruitful. Both resulted in quality starts, including a seven-inning shutout at Miller Park on August 30.

"We've got to win and try to force a Game 7, so all I'm really focused on right now is going out there and making pitches and try and get the ball to the bullpen," Marcum said. "If I can get the ball to Sammy (Takashi Saito), Frankie (Francisco Rodriguez), [and] John Axford with the lead, I think we're doing something right."

At the same time, Jackson--who lasted just 4 1/3 innings in Game 2--has not exactly been lights out against Milwaukee. The big-hitting Crew have not spared Jackson, pasting him for 26 hits and 14 runs in 20 innings over three starts this season.

          Pick: Brewers

              12) Ohio State handed Illinois its first loss, but Buckeyes were 1-4 passing for 17 yards; the only completion was a TD pass, but what a red flag as they move forward. Their passing game is a shambles.

              11) Oklahoma State is first team in 100 years to beat Texas in Austin two years in a row; Cowobys got a solid road win, 38-26.

              10) Utah came east and beat Pitt 26-14; Panthers were 9-30 passing and had only 120 total yards. At home. Awful.

              9) Oregon got pretty banged-up late Saturday night, but pulled away in the second half and beat Arizona State 41-27. These teams could meet again in the first Pac-12 title game.

              8) Kansas State has pulled upsets four weeks in a row, getting a defensive TD and a kick return TD in a 41-34 win at Texas Tech. Tech passed ball for 461 yards but were minus-4 in turnovers and lost at home.

              7) UConn beat South Florida 16-10, second year in row they beat USF without benefit of an offensive touchdown. Football's a weird game.

              6) Hawai'i/San Jose State both had six turnovers Friday night; don't think I've ever seen a game that sloppy before, when both teams turned the ball over so much. Plus San Jose blocked a PAT and ran it back for two points that turned out to be the difference in the game.

              5) SMU had a dreadful record as a home favorite and Central Florida had a great record as a road underdog, but Mustangs avenged their loss to UCF in LY's C-USA championship game, beating the Knights 38-17.

              4) Florida lost its third game in a row because you can't win SEC games if you don't have a quarterback who's played college football. These teams used a combined seven QBs- QB play in the SEC is sub-par this year.

              3) Northern Illinois had a ridiculous 494 rushing yards in a game they were losing 15-13 at the half; Huskies crushed Western Michigan in the second half, pulling away to a 51-22 win. Wisconsin is the only team to hold the Huskies under 40 points this season.

              2) If you bet South Carolina -3 Saturday, please stop reading. Gamecocks took an intentional safety on last play of the game in Starkville, avoiding a punt with 0:04 left to play when they led Mississippi State 14-10. This is known as quite possibly the worst football beat I've ever seen.

              1) Clemson was down 28-10 at Maryland; not only did they win, they covered the spread, winning a wild 56-45 game over the Terps. Tigers are now 7-0, and seemed poised for a magical season 30 years after they won the national title back in 1981.
