Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Flames at Toronto Maple Leafs (-129, 5.5)

West meets East in a rare matchup as the Flames try to build off an impressive 4-1 win over Montreal Thursday, while the Maple Leafs look to remain unbeaten.

    Buoyed by Bourque

Calgary certainly didn’t get the start it wanted, dropping the season’s first two games. But you can’t blame left wing Rene Bourque.

Trying to live up to a standard that saw him score 27 goals in each of the last two seasons, Bourque appears on his way. He scored twice in the Flames’ win over the Canadiens and leads the team with three goals. One of those came on the power play. And to think, if he just shot more (he has just six shots on net) the goal total might be even better.

    Too much rest for Toronto?

An interesting storyline for this one is the home team and just how fresh or rusty it might be. As is often the case in the early portions of the season, there are bizarre gaps in the schedule that tend to get too long.

The Maple Leafs, impressive in wins over Montreal and Ottawa, haven’t played since last Saturday - a 6-5 decision over the Senators on Hockey Night in Canada.

In hockey, a week can sometimes feel like a lifetime. One would have to think that Toronto coach Ron Wilson will have the team focused to play in their own building for the third consecutive game.

    A milestone for Miikka

Much like some of the other mainstays in the NHL between the pipes - Martin Brodeur of the Devils and Henrik Lundqvist of the Rangers among them - consistency and reliability have just become part of the equation for Calgary’s Miikka Kiprusoff.

Very quietly, Kiprusoff has choreographed quite a career with the Flames and on Thursday, he continued to rack up the honors.

The win over Montreal gave him 263 victories as a Flame, and it moved him into first place in franchise history ahead of Mike Vernon. Kiprusoff, who began his career in San Jose, has 277 career wins.

    History

Toronto (2-0) is halfway toward matching last year’s brilliant start. The Maple Leafs opened up 4-0 last season and scored 15 goals in that span. ... The Flames won both meetings last year, a 2-1 shootout in Toronto on Jan. 15, and a 5-2 decision in Calgary on Dec. 16. Kiprusoff outlasted former Toronto netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere in both.

Vancouver Canucks at Edmonton Oilers (139, 5.5)

Should be a lot of life in the building, as a terrific Western Conference rivalry resumes. It’ll be a contrast for sure as the Oilers, with their youth and enthusiasm, look to keep the aging Canucks in an early-season tailspin.

    Nothing easy against the East

Perhaps it’s in their heads, perhaps it’s the travel in some instances, or perhaps Vancouver is just flat-out running out of steam. But whatever it is, the Canucks have no answers versus the Eastern Conference these days.

Consider the last four games against teams from the East, dating back to last year’s Stanley Cup Finals: Vancouver lost the last two games to Boston, being outscored 9-2, and in the early going this year, dropped decisions to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, in which they allowed nine combined goals.

The good news is that, back in Western Canada, perhaps they find a comfort zone versus Edmonton. But that said, back in their conference, against Detroit Thursday night, they were blanked 2-0.

    Delivering on defense

If the Oilers are going to make a run toward the postseason, and they have the offense to do so, the backline must get stronger. So far, so good.

In a small sampling, Edmonton has been sharp in its own zone. Through two games, the upstart Oilers have allowed just three goals and the goaltending parlay of veteran Nikolai Khabibulin and newcomer Devan Dubnyk seems to be a fit.

    Ryan’s hope

The Canucks clearly miss center Ryan Kesler, a force last season who is continuing to recover from offseason hip surgery. Kesler participated in a morning skate in Philadelphia Wednesday, and has been practicing since Oct. 5, but still expects to be out until at least Oct. 18.

Kesler had 41 goals and 73 points and finished as a plus-24, helping Vancouver to the league’s No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs last year.

    History

The Canucks won the season series, 4-2 last year, but Edmonton carries a little momentum into this date. The Oilers won the final two installments last year, outscoring Vancouver 6-1 in a home-and-home in April. ... Edmonton will try to match last season’s 2-0 start at home when they defeated Florida and Calgary by a combined 7-2 score.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Avalanche at Montreal Canadiens (-141, 5.5)

The Avalanche are excelling on special teams. They’ve killed 12 of 13 penalties this season and just went 4 of 6 on the power play in their 7-1 win over Ottawa on Thursday.

The line of left wing Gabriel Landeskog, center Ryan O’Reilly and right wing Daniel Winnik combined for two goals and four assists in the victory over the Senators.

"They've really set the tone, I think, for our team over the last three games," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "It's a line that's been able to play in the offensive zone and wear the opposition's defensemen down. They're getting rewarded for their hard work."

Montreal, meanwhile, went 0 for 4 on the power play in a 4-1 loss to Calgary on Thursday. The Canadiens are averaging two goals a game.

The Avalanche are 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings with Montreal.

    Pick: Avalanche

Boston Bruins at Chicago Blackhawks (-130, 5.5)

The defending Stanley Cup champs have dropped three one-goal games and are not playing with the same edge they had last season. Perhaps it’s only a coincidence, but Boston has not been involved in a fight through four games.

“You can lose games where you’re strictly outplayed, you’re outmatched by the other team, or completely outworked,’’ Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference told the Boston Globe. “Then you can lose games where you didn’t play up to your standards. The frustrating part is that we know some of these losses are because we feel we didn’t give ourselves a chance to win because of our inconsistencies, just not playing to our standards.’’

Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists in Chicago’s 4-3 comeback win over Winnipeg on Thursday.

The Blackhawks were bolstered by free agent signee Daniel Carcillo, who was suspended for the first two games. The left wing had an assist while skating with Kane and Marian Hossa.

The home team is 9-4-1 in the last 14 Boston-Chicago meetings.

    Pick: Blackhawks
