Saturday's betting tips: Northwestern has Iowa's number

    Who’s hot

MLB: The Over is 9-2-2 in the last 13 Tigers-Rangers matchups in Texas.

NCAAF: Tennessee is 9-4 ATS in its last 13 games as an underdog of 10.5 points or more.

NCAAF: The Under is 8-1 in North Carolina’s last nine home games.

NHL: The Over is 8-1-2 in Ottawa’s last 11 games.

CFL: Winnipeg is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 road games.

    Who’s not

MLB: The Tigers are 2-6 in their last eight games as an underdog.

NCAAF: Fresno St. is 14-29 ATS in its last 43 conference games.

NCAAF: Iowa is 1-5 ATS in its last six meetings with Northwestern.

NHL: The Devils are 0-5 in their last five road games.

CFL: The Over is 1-5 in the last six Winnipeg-Edmonton meetings.

    Key stat

55 -- That's the percentage of Illinois QB Nathan Scheelhaase's passes that have gone to WR A.J. Jenkins, who also has caught seven of Scheelhaase's 10 TD throws. The No. 15 Illini, who are 3.5-point home favorites over Ohio State, move Jenkins around constantly to create mismatches.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

No. 25 Penn State, an 11.5-point home favorite over Purdue on Saturday, won’t have leading WR Derek Moye. He broke his left foot when he slipped on stairs in his apartment, and will miss at least two games. A senior, Moye leads the Nittany Lions with 28 catches for 485 yards and three TDs. While Penn State will miss Moye, the Lions will have RB Brandon Beachum and DBs D’Anton Lynn and Stephen Morris available. Penn State is 1-7 ATS in its last eight games.

    Game of the day

ALCS Game 6: Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers (-145, 9)

    Notable quotable

“The Jets are done! I feel so sorry for the Jets. I said this before the season started, I have never seen a team under this kind of pressure that the Jets were going to be under this season. Satisfaction will only hit you when you get to a Super Bowl. And, there is no way.” – Hall of Fame WR Michael Irvin on the 2-3 Jets, who are 7-point home favorites against winless Miami on Monday night.

    Notes and tips

No. 17 Virginia Tech, a 6.5-point favorite at Wake Forest, is 23-5 in conference road games since joining the ACC in 2004. The Hokies have won nine straight road games since a 28-23 loss at Georgia Tech in 2009. And Virginia Tech has won both previous visits to Wake Forest, 27-6 in 2006 and 17-10 in 2004.

Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby is now practicing without limitations as the former MVP tries to come back from concussion-like symptoms. Crosby, 24, who took head shots in consecutive games in January, won’t put a timetable on when he’ll start playing again. Pittsburgh is off to a 3-0-1-1 start without him.

It is unclear who will start at QB for Maryland when the Terps host No. 8 Clemson as 8.5-point dogs. Coach Randy Edsall pulled 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year Danny O’Brien during last week’s game at Georgia Tech, and backup C.J. Brown nearly rallied Maryland to victory. O’Brien is a better pure passer, while Brown is more of a dual threat. Brown ran for a 77-yard TD on a zone read against the Yellow Jackets but finished 4-of-17 passing for 36 yards with an interception.

Florida State, a 12.5-point favorite at Duke, will start freshman tackle Bobby Hart and sophomore guard Garrett Faircloth in place of injured seniors Andrew Datko (shoulder) and David Spurlock (knee) respectively. The reeling Seminoles are 1-7 ATS in their last eight ACC games.

Winnipeg (9-5) @ Edmonton (8-6)— Bombers are 2-4 since starting season 6-1; they’re 8-0 vs spread as underdogs this season, 5-0 on road, with only road losses 27-7 in Regina, 25-24 in Toronto (the two worst teams in CFL). Eskimos (-1) were 5-0 when they went to Manitoba and lost 28-16 in Week 6, starting them on current 3-6 slide; they’ve lost three of last four home games, and are 3-3 as favorites this year, 3-2 at home. Under is 5-2 in both Winnipeg road games and Eskimo home games this season. Edmonton is 2-4 if they score 24 or less points, 6-0 if they score more.

Hamilton (8-6) @ Montreal (9-5)—Home side won all three series meetings this year; TiCats won 34-26 (+3.5) in Week 5, 44-21 (+2.5) six weeks later, then lost 43-13 (+5) a week later. Hamilton is 3-4 on road, 3-3 as road dog, losing away games by 18-12-3-30 points. Montreal scored 34-32-29 points in winning last three games; they’re 3-4 as home favorites (5-2 SU), with home wins by 4-23-23-30-10 points. Alouettes covered just two of their last seven games overall. Over is 8-3 in last 11 Hamilton games, 0-5 in Montreal’s last five games at home.

Saskatchewan is 2-5 at home, with four losses by 10+ points; they’re 3-8 as underdogs this season, 1-3 as home dogs. Under is 10-2 in last dozen Roughrider games, 7-3 in Lions’ last ten (1-3 in last four).

Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 16 odds and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Edmonton Eskimos (-2.5, 49)

The Blue Bombers need a win here to secure at least a home game in the playoffs, while Edmonton is battling for first place in its division. The Bombers will benefit from two extra days of rest and preparation with Edmonton coming off a short week. It could make a difference.

Winnipeg’s running game is coming around with the emergence of running back Chris Garrett, who picked up 131 yards in last week’s victory against Hamilton.
However, the Bombers will probably have play the Eskimos without DE Kenny Mainor following a death in his family. Fernand Kashama and Jason Vega will be taking turns replacing him.

Edmonton’s Jerome Messam picked up Canadian Player of the Week honors with 118 rushing yards and a touchdown against Saskatchewan on Monday but that didn’t stop the Eskimos from trading for RB Hugh Charles. The club hopes Charles will be a perfect complement to what Messam and Calvin McCarthy bring to the table.

      Pick: Edmonton

      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Montreal Alouettes (-7.5, 56)

The Alouettes are in first place tie with the Blue Bombers, and a win would secure at least a playoff home game in Montreal.

The secondary of the Tiger Cats is once again depleted by injuries. Jason Shivers, Milt Collins and Carlos Thomas are all doubtful for this game. That means newly-acquired CB Dee Webb might have to move to the half-back position on the short side, where he will have the mission to contain SB Jamal Richardson. That is far from an ideal scenario for Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator Corey Chamblin.

On offense, Hamilton goes as well or as bad as Kevin Glenn goes. Glenn’s QB rating has been of 118.3 in his seven wins but is only 69.2 in seven losses. So it’s not surprising to hear head coach Marcel Bellefeuille warn that while Glenn is still his number one QB, we’ll see more of Quinton Porter in the upcoming weeks.

      Pick: Montreal

      B.C. Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (+8.5, 48)

Darian Durant is dinged up and we saw last week that neither Ryan Dinwiddie nor Cole Berquist has the right stuff to replace him anytime soon. Despite a broken bone on his left foot, Durant vows he will be starting this week and through the remainder of this season.

The Roughriders have not scored an offensive touchdown in more than three games and the club’s offensive line has to take a lot of the blame. Saskatchewan’s quarterbacks have been sacked twice and picked off three times in the last two games.

The Lions’ offense is hitting on all cylinders with Travis Lulay improving each week while the defense remains solid. The only concern comes with special teams. That unit conceded 299 yards to Calgary last week.

Last time the Lions and the Riders squared off, B.C. easily won 42-5. Besides the support of the loudest fans in the league, the Riders might face another humbling outcome this time around.

      Pick: B.C.

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Flames at Toronto Maple Leafs (-129, 5.5)

West meets East in a rare matchup as the Flames try to build off an impressive 4-1 win over Montreal Thursday, while the Maple Leafs look to remain unbeaten.

        Buoyed by Bourque

Calgary certainly didn’t get the start it wanted, dropping the season’s first two games. But you can’t blame left wing Rene Bourque.

Trying to live up to a standard that saw him score 27 goals in each of the last two seasons, Bourque appears on his way. He scored twice in the Flames’ win over the Canadiens and leads the team with three goals. One of those came on the power play. And to think, if he just shot more (he has just six shots on net) the goal total might be even better.

        Too much rest for Toronto?

An interesting storyline for this one is the home team and just how fresh or rusty it might be. As is often the case in the early portions of the season, there are bizarre gaps in the schedule that tend to get too long.

The Maple Leafs, impressive in wins over Montreal and Ottawa, haven’t played since last Saturday - a 6-5 decision over the Senators on Hockey Night in Canada.

In hockey, a week can sometimes feel like a lifetime. One would have to think that Toronto coach Ron Wilson will have the team focused to play in their own building for the third consecutive game.

        A milestone for Miikka

Much like some of the other mainstays in the NHL between the pipes - Martin Brodeur of the Devils and Henrik Lundqvist of the Rangers among them - consistency and reliability have just become part of the equation for Calgary’s Miikka Kiprusoff.

Very quietly, Kiprusoff has choreographed quite a career with the Flames and on Thursday, he continued to rack up the honors.

The win over Montreal gave him 263 victories as a Flame, and it moved him into first place in franchise history ahead of Mike Vernon. Kiprusoff, who began his career in San Jose, has 277 career wins.

        History

Toronto (2-0) is halfway toward matching last year’s brilliant start. The Maple Leafs opened up 4-0 last season and scored 15 goals in that span. ... The Flames won both meetings last year, a 2-1 shootout in Toronto on Jan. 15, and a 5-2 decision in Calgary on Dec. 16. Kiprusoff outlasted former Toronto netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere in both.

Vancouver Canucks at Edmonton Oilers (139, 5.5)

Should be a lot of life in the building, as a terrific Western Conference rivalry resumes. It’ll be a contrast for sure as the Oilers, with their youth and enthusiasm, look to keep the aging Canucks in an early-season tailspin.

        Nothing easy against the East

Perhaps it’s in their heads, perhaps it’s the travel in some instances, or perhaps Vancouver is just flat-out running out of steam. But whatever it is, the Canucks have no answers versus the Eastern Conference these days.

Consider the last four games against teams from the East, dating back to last year’s Stanley Cup Finals: Vancouver lost the last two games to Boston, being outscored 9-2, and in the early going this year, dropped decisions to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, in which they allowed nine combined goals.

The good news is that, back in Western Canada, perhaps they find a comfort zone versus Edmonton. But that said, back in their conference, against Detroit Thursday night, they were blanked 2-0.

        Delivering on defense

If the Oilers are going to make a run toward the postseason, and they have the offense to do so, the backline must get stronger. So far, so good.

In a small sampling, Edmonton has been sharp in its own zone. Through two games, the upstart Oilers have allowed just three goals and the goaltending parlay of veteran Nikolai Khabibulin and newcomer Devan Dubnyk seems to be a fit.

        Ryan’s hope

The Canucks clearly miss center Ryan Kesler, a force last season who is continuing to recover from offseason hip surgery. Kesler participated in a morning skate in Philadelphia Wednesday, and has been practicing since Oct. 5, but still expects to be out until at least Oct. 18.

Kesler had 41 goals and 73 points and finished as a plus-24, helping Vancouver to the league’s No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs last year.

        History

The Canucks won the season series, 4-2 last year, but Edmonton carries a little momentum into this date. The Oilers won the final two installments last year, outscoring Vancouver 6-1 in a home-and-home in April. ... Edmonton will try to match last season’s 2-0 start at home when they defeated Florida and Calgary by a combined 7-2 score.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Avalanche at Montreal Canadiens (-141, 5.5)

The Avalanche are excelling on special teams. They’ve killed 12 of 13 penalties this season and just went 4 of 6 on the power play in their 7-1 win over Ottawa on Thursday.

The line of left wing Gabriel Landeskog, center Ryan O’Reilly and right wing Daniel Winnik combined for two goals and four assists in the victory over the Senators.

"They've really set the tone, I think, for our team over the last three games," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "It's a line that's been able to play in the offensive zone and wear the opposition's defensemen down. They're getting rewarded for their hard work."

Montreal, meanwhile, went 0 for 4 on the power play in a 4-1 loss to Calgary on Thursday. The Canadiens are averaging two goals a game.

The Avalanche are 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings with Montreal.

        Pick: Avalanche

Boston Bruins at Chicago Blackhawks (-130, 5.5)

The defending Stanley Cup champs have dropped three one-goal games and are not playing with the same edge they had last season. Perhaps it’s only a coincidence, but Boston has not been involved in a fight through four games.

“You can lose games where you’re strictly outplayed, you’re outmatched by the other team, or completely outworked,’’ Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference told the Boston Globe. “Then you can lose games where you didn’t play up to your standards. The frustrating part is that we know some of these losses are because we feel we didn’t give ourselves a chance to win because of our inconsistencies, just not playing to our standards.’’

Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists in Chicago’s 4-3 comeback win over Winnipeg on Thursday.

The Blackhawks were bolstered by free agent signee Daniel Carcillo, who was suspended for the first two games. The left wing had an assist while skating with Kane and Marian Hossa.

The home team is 9-4-1 in the last 14 Boston-Chicago meetings.

        Pick: Blackhawks

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers (-145, 9)

The depleted and battered Tigers kept their season alive with a lot of grit Thursday, not to mention a lucky bounce off the third-base bag.

But now they’re back in Texas, where the Rangers are 36-17 in their last 53 home games, including three straight in the postseason.

Lefty Derek Holland gets the ball for the Rangers. They’ve won each of his past five starts, though Max Scherzer outpitched him last time out.

Texas’ 52-29 home mark in the regular season tied for the best in MLB with the Yankees and Phillies. Texas hit .296 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

"I don't know if it's the ballpark or just being refreshed and sleeping in our own beds," outfielder David Murphy told ESPN.com. "Most teams play well at home, and we're no exception to that. We play better at home. It's the postseason. They will come out and play well; we just have to continue to play good baseball. [Thursday] was a good baseball game; we just got beat. We'll be fine."

The Tigers are a great story, but they won’t keep the Rangers from a second straight World Series appearance.

          Pick: Rangers

              Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- How on God’s green earth is the Big East putting Boise State and Air Force in the league, even if it just for football? Boise is in Idaho, and Air Force is in Colorado. Boise isn't even in eastern Idaho. Stupid. Greed.

-- Bears had nine false start penalties in Detroit Monday night. Nine. That’s giving away 45 yards before you start.

-- GAP is closing 21% of its North American stores. At some point, NBA players will see this and realize that givebacks are going to be necessary or else they won’t get paid at all this season, which hurts players more than owners.

-- Three NFL teams haven’t lost a fumble yet; Bills-Lions-Patriots. All in first place or tied for first.

-- Cam Newton’s brother Cecil signed on with Green Bay’s practice squad this week; the Tennessee State alum is a 6-2, 315-pound center. -- The daughter of former Redskin QB Mark Rypien is a QB in the Lingerie Football League, whose games are sometimes on MTV2. I didn’t even know there was such a thing a MTV2.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

              13) Interesting prop bet. BoDog is giving 7-1 odds this week that Tony Romo will throw a pick-6 at Foxboro Sunday.

              12) Giants have converted 16 of 40 third down chances in their three wins; in their two losses, only 2 of 22.

              11) Too damn many rougher-the-passer penalties are being called in the NFL; except for helmet-to-helmet hits, the league needs to let players play and football be football.

              10) Former Boston College basketball coach Al Skinner is now an AAU coach, which lot of people thought he was when he was drawing checks from BC. Another former BC coach, Jim O’Brien, is now the coach at D-III Emerson College in the Boston area.

              9) Florida State has become a good defensive team under coach Leonard Hamilton, who coached the Wizards when Michael Jordan was running that show; Seminoles’ Midnight Madness show Friday was billed as “Jam with Coach Ham”. FSU needs one explosive scorer to break through in the ACC.

              8) Guess I don’t understand business. Columbus Blue Jackets drew on;y 9,187/8,986 fans to their first two home games; why would a team that draws this poorly not move to Hamilton, Saskatoon or Quebec City? They wouldn’t draw under 10,000 fans in those hotbeds of hockey. Whats preventing this from happening?

              7) New York Rangers opened the NHL season in Europe; they play on Long Island Saturday, then start a swing thru western Canada- they don’t play in their home building until October 27. Then there are the Maple Leafs, whose first five games are at home- they don’t visit foreign ice until October 20.

              6) According to The Gold Sheet, Al Davis never owned more than 47% of the Raiders.

              5) If you like pro football, SoundFX is good show on NFL Network Wednesday nights; it features three players/coaches who were miked during the previous week’s games. Mostly interesting stuff to listen to.

              4) Only in the Boston media could firing a manager and letting a GM walk to another franchise be seen as “a thermonuclear aftermath”. Nothing like overreacting to everything.

              3) Sometimes teams win despite organizational dysfunction; Dick Vermeil never coached the Rams again after he won Super Bowl 34. Dick Williams bolted the A’s after consecutive World Series titles in 1972-73. Obviously some of this dysfunctional stuff was going on when the Red Sox won in 2007, but their talent overcame it. Losing exposes flaws and the media runs with it and heads roll. If Boston had made the playoffs, we wouldn’t know anything about these players' clubhouse hijinks.

              2) Nelson Cruz has 11 homers in his first 25 playoff games; he threw the go-ahead run out from medium-depth right field late in Game 4. Too bad he doesn’t play in New York or Boston; he might actually become well-known.

              1) If I was managing the Brewers, I’d sleep well every night, except those nights when I gave Albert Pujols a chance to beat me. You cannot pitch to him in any big spot. He’s that good.

Tigers at Rangers - Game 6: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers (-146, 9)

                    Texas leads series 3-2

                    THE STORY
: The Detroit Tigers are alive and optimistic but the Texas Rangers lead the series 3-2 and have the home-field advantage when the two squads meet in Saturday’s Game 6 of the American League Championship Series. Detroit staved off elimination with Thursday’s 7-5 victory and received good fortune when a potential double-play ball hit by Miguel Cabrera clipped the third-base bag and caromed down the left-field line for the go-ahead double during a four-run uprising. Nelson Cruz has five homers in the series for Texas, which needs to win just one of the final two games to advance to the World Series for the second straight season.

                    TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, Fox.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Max Scherzer (0-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Derek Holland (0-0, 10.13 ERA)

Scherzer received a no-decision in Game 2 when he allowed three runs in six-plus innings and was pulled after Cruz blasted a game-tying homer off of him. It was the first homer he allowed in the postseason after giving up 29 during the regular season.

Holland lasted just 2 2/3 innings in Game 2 and gave up a three-homer to Ryan Raburn. He allowed four hits and four walks. Holland won 10 of his last 11 regular-season decisions but has given up 11 hits and six walks in nine postseason innings.

ABOUT THE TIGERS: Detroit slammed four homers in Game 5 with Delmon Young hitting two and driving in three runs. Young is 6-for-12 with two homers against Holland. Raburn and Alex Avila also homered. Friday’s day of rest should serve the Tigers well as both closer Jose Valverde and set-up man Joaquin Benoit were unavailable in Game 5 after pitching the previous three days. Phil Coke recorded the final five outs for his first postseason save after Justin Verlander pitched 7 1/3 solid innings.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: Cruz is the first player to hit five homers in a League Championship Series and the fifth player to hit five in any postseason series. He also has 11 RBIs, tied for most in ALCS history with David Ortiz and B.J. Upton. Josh Hamilton is struggling with a groin injury and hasn’t homered in 37 postseason at-bats. Michael Young had two hits in Game 5 after going 2-for-17 over the first four games.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 9-2-2 in the last 13 meetings in Texas.
                    * Tigers are 4-1 in Scherzers last five starts vs. Rangers.
                    * Tigers are 2-5 in the last seven meetings in Texas.

FINAL PITCH: Detroit became the first team in postseason history to have four consecutive batters hit for a team cycle during the Game 5 victory. Raburn singled, Cabrera doubled, Victor Martinez tripled and Young homered during the four-run sixth inning.
