Friday's betting tips: Cards cashing as road dogs

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Boise State is 21-7 against the spread in its last 28 road games.

MLB: Milwaukee is 20-6 in Yovani Gallardo’s last 26 home starts.

MLB: St. Louis is 9-2 in its last 11 games as a road underdog.

NHL: Nashville was 7-1 in preseason play.

CFL: Winnipeg is 14-5-1 against the spread in its last 20 games overall.

WNBA: The Lynx are 20-8 against the spread in their last 28 games as an underdog.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: Fresno State is 2-9 against the number in its last 11 prime time Friday games.

MLB: Arizona is 0-4 in its last four playoff road games.

MLB: Philadelphia is just 1-7 in its last eight home games.

NHL: Carolina was 1-4-1 in preseason play, scoring just 11 goals.

CFL: Just one of the last seven meetings between the Blue Bombers and Tiger-Cats have played over the total.

WNBA: The Atlanta Dream are 1-5 against the spread in their last six games when favored by 0.5 points to 4.5 points.

    Key stat

.235 – The Anaheim Ducks open their regular season in Helsikini, Finland against the Buffalo Sabres in a 1 p.m. ET start. The Ducks have a .235 winning percentage in season openers (4-13-0).

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Dave Bolland, Chicago Blackhawks – Bolland (upper-body) is practicing with the Blackhawks, but won’t take part in the club’s opener Friday against the Dallas Stars. The Blackhawks are thin up the middle as it is and are experimenting with Patrick Kane at center, so they could struggle if Bolland is out for any length of time. He had 15 goals and 37 points in 61 games for Chicago last season.

    Game of the day

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies (-185, 7)

    Notable quotable

"You can't even chart every formation they have. What you have to do is be able to understand what they're trying to do with the personnel on the field and play defense to stop personnel groupings, not formations. There's just too many formations to work on in any one week, two weeks or three weeks. They run multiple formations." – Fresno State coach Pat Hill on preparing for the Boise State Broncos. The Bulldogs focused on offensive and defensive assignments and strategy instead of a heavy hitting practice on Monday.

    Notes and tips

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce will play Friday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after missing last week’s loss to Montreal with a rib injury. In 12 games, Pierce has chucked for 2,680 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions to lead the Blue Bombers to 8-5 record, 9-4 against the spread. He’ll have a target on his chest, too. “I’m not trying to take a shot at him,” Hamilton defensive lineman Stevie Braggs told reporters this week. “But if I get a chance to sack him? Of course. I’ll put this 250 pounds on him and just lay on him a little bit and say, ‘Hello, how are you doing?’ Converse with him a little bit." Hamilton is set as a 3-point home favorite.

Down 2-0 heading into the third game of the WNBA finals, the Atlanta Dream are looking for a little love from the officials. Minnesota downed Atlanta 101-95 in Game 2 as a 5.5-point favorite despite Angel McCoughtry’s 38 points – a finals record. After the loss she was steamed about the 33 fouls called against Atlanta compared to 23 against Minnesota. "Let us battle out. Let us scratch and claw to the end. It's entertainment. That's what people want to see," McCoughtry told reporters. Atlanta is set as a 4-point home favorite in Game 3.

The Colorado Buffalos have suspended five defensive players indefinitely for violating unspecified team rules, coach Jon Embree announced Thursday. Defensive backs Josh Moten, Ayodeji Olatoye, Parker Orms and Paul Vigo, along with linebacker Liloa Nobriga were suspended. Orms is the lone starter of the group. Embree said the reason for the suspensions did not involve law enforcement. The players will be unable to participate in football-related activities in the meantime. Colorado is a big 29.5-point underdog at Stanford on Saturday.

        CFL

        Week 15

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 15 odds and picks
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-3, 53)

Buck Pierce should be back behind center and that’s good news for the Bombers although they are still without their two best running backs.

Despite injuries and with Alex Brink starting at QB, Winnipeg came a yard short of beating the Montreal Alouettes for the second time. With Pierce back in the lineup, the Bombers will be even more threatening even though he has thrown more interceptions (13) than touchdowns (12). The Bombers lost four of their last five and should be hungry but the defense must step up and prove as intimidating as it was in the first eight games of the year.

That starts with DE Odell Willis. Willis managed only four sacks and eight tackles in his last six games after notching eight sacks and 12 tackles in his first six.

The Tiger-Cats have won their last two games against Calgary and Toronto but have been showing some inconsistency all year long. This said, RB Terry Grant brings tons of speed and with Avon Cobourne as well, the Tiger-Cats have a dual threat on the ground. Wideout Marcus Thigpen also makes the offense more explosive.

        Pick: Hamilton

        Calgary Stampeders at B.C. Lions (-3.5, 54)

Both teams are coming off impressive wins last week and are now battling for first place in the West.

The Stampeders have been excellent on the road with a 5-1 record but their defense has allowed 348 points, fourth from the league’s basement. Meanwhile, the Lions lead the league having allowed only 273 points.

With a win the Stampeders would stay alone on top of their division while taking the season series against the Lions – which could prove huge when the bye weeks are decided. Calgary is also trying to avenge a 32-19 home loss to the Lions at McMahon Stadium on Sept. 17.

Jon Cornish, named Canadian player of the week and of the month, has kicked Joffrey Reynolds out of the lineup and makes the Stampeders offense more balanced. He has rushed for 233 yards in two games.

The Lions’ offense, led by QB Travis Lulay, remains one of the most potent in the league. Wally Buono’s squad also has an explosive young running back in Andrew Harris, who scored two touchdowns last week against the Eskimos. The Lions are on a six-week winning streak but most importantly, they come into this one relatively healthy and with lots of depth.

        Pick: B.C.

Toronto Argonauts at Montreal Alouettes (-13, 54)

Jeremaine Copeland and Cory Boyd are both frustrated by the way they are used in the offense. Copeland spoke out to TSN about it before Boyd voiced his complaints over Twitter.

Copeland says the Argos record would probably be much better if he was thrown the ball more often. So despite a change at QB, team spirit can’t get much lower in the Argos locker room with a 3-10 record.

Head coach Jim Barker even admitted he made a mistake by sticking so long with QB Cleo Lemon while saying he can now build around Steven Jyles. The only positive thing going for the Argos is that Chad Owens is about to become the only professional football player in history with more than 3000 combined yards two years in a row (he now has 2431).

Meanwhile, the Alouettes could secure a playoff berth with a win but all the attention will be on QB Anthony Calvillo. He is only 258 yards away from surpassing Damon Allen’s record for the most passing yards in a career in all of pro football history (CFL and NFL).

        Pick: Montreal

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Edmonton Eskimos (-6, 50.5)

The Eskimos are in the thick of the race for first place in the West while the Roughriders are in a survival mode.

The Eskimos defense has been impressive (ranked third in the league) while no team has given more points this season than Saskatchewan (385, almost 30 points per game). The Riders’ offense has only scored 275 points on the year and were been beaten by the Lions and the Stampeders by a combined score of 82-8 in their last two games.

After losing the first game of the season to the Eskimos, the Roughriders absolutely need this win to avoid being out of the playoff picture for the first time since 2001.

But the Eskimos offense is much more balanced and the rushing game might be the difference in this one. Edmonton averages 104 yards on the ground while the Riders have allowed 155 yards per game to opposing running backs.

Also note that the Roughriders have had their share of difficulties at Commonwealth Stadium, winning only three times in their last 16 trips to Edmonton.

        Pick: Edmonton

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Columbus Blue Jackets (-110, 5)

If you’re looking for a team that has a lot to play for early in this NHL season, look no further than the Nashville Predators.

Their top defensive pairing – and likely the best duo in the league – Shea Weber and Ryan Suter are both playing in the final year of their contracts. Plus, the defensive unit was good enough to send 2009 first-round pick Ryan Ellis down to the AHL as it is.

“A lot of guys have made it really hard (for us) and that’s great,” coach Barry Trotz told reporters. “We have a lot of guys who can play for us right now. If anyone backs off in terms of their effort or their play, we have lots of people who can jump in there.”

Then, of course, there’s goaltender Pekka Rinne. All he did was win 33 games with a 2.12 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.

While we won’t put much stock in preseason play, it looks as though the Preds are more than ready to roll after going 7-1 in the exhibition games. This team is going to do some major damage this season.

              Pick: Predators

New York Rangers at Los Angeles Kings (-125, 5)

The Rangers and Kings finally get together for a game that means something after spending the last week or so touring around Europe playing exhibition games.

Sounds like a nice vacation, but like any excursion abroad, the travel can really get to you. New York had a spotless record heading into its last preseason matchup but was then pounded 8-4 by Ev Zug on Monday. It was the club’s fourth game in four different countries over a five-day span.

They’ve been idle since then as far as games go, though far from that with transactions. They waived pesky forward Sean Avery and picked up defenseman Woywitka to try to fill the gap that Marc Staal’s absence has left with his concussion symptoms.

These European games are always a handicapping crapshoot, but don’t expect a scoring spree. Henrik Lundqvist and Jonathan Quick are two of the best in the business between the pipes and the two clubs will feel each other out in this one.

              Pick: Under

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies (-185, 7)

You have to love it when a series comes down to a pair of buddies sharing the hill in the deciding game. That’s exactly what we’re looking at with Philadelphia’s Roy Halladay going head-to-head with former teammate Chris Carpenter.

“Might be fitting that it goes down to a fifth game,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told reporters. “We’re a good team. They’re a good team. We’ve been in close games all year long. It’s up to us to go get it. It’s sitting right there for us. We’ve got our ace going and we’re at home, and so everything is sitting right there. And, basically, that’s why we worked like hell to get the home-field advantage.”

But the Cardinals hold all the momentum after David Freese hammered a huge two-run homer and drove in four runs while Lance Berkman added his fourth RBI of the series in Game 4’s 5-3 victory.

However, this line forces you into a tough decision. We like Halladay at home over Carpenter and home field advantage is obviously huge in the deciding game, but do you want to pay as much as -200 for the Phils as of Thursday evening? That’s a lot of chalk to swallow in a series that’s gone back and forth like this one.

Looking at the total, three of the four games have played over the number, but we see this one as an absolute pitching duel. We’ll hop on the under before the over/under drops any lower.

                    Pick: Under

                        Armadillo: Weekend's six-pack

-- Home team covered seven of last nine Illinois-Indiana games.

-- Iowa won six of last seven vs Penn State, including four SU upsets.

-- Favorites are 10-1-1 vs spread in last dozen Minnesota-Purdue games.

-- Boise State covered nine of last ten against Fresno State.

-- Washington State covered eight of last eleven against UCLA.

-- Nevada covered its last five games against UNLV.

                        *******************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: The heroes of my time.......

When I graduated from high school (a long time ago), I remember a friend of mine signing his name in my yearbook after listing some celebrities we had talked about constantly over the previous few years; he called them “the heroes of our time.” This is a list of the heroes of my time. Its not a ranking or anything, just a list of people who’ve made an impression.

                        Non-sports division:
-- Chuck Barris—The Gong Show was a parody of American Idol 25 years beforehand, and with a warped sense of humor. Its hard to describe how bizarre Barris was, other than he later claimed to be a hitman for the CIA, or something like that. The Unknown Comic, a bad jokester wearing a bag over his head, was a regular. Nothing since has come close to rivaling The Gong Show for sheer lunacy.
-- David Letterman—His best work was in the fall of 1980, on an ill-fated daytime talkshow that got cancelled, which led to his getting a latenight show. Rich Hall/Will Shriner were contributors to this show; trust me, it was funnier than his show now.
                        – Steve Martin—I’m convinced he’s the funniest man alive, but he’s also a really good dramatic actor. Thinking about his movies, Roxanne and Shop Girl are my favorites.

                        Non-athlete division:
-- Charles Oscar Finley—Unquestionably should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame; his innovations are still putting millions into owners’ pockets. Night World Series games, colorful uniforms, the DH, Mr Finley was also an astute GM who put together the team that won five straight AL West titles and three consecutive World Series. If they put that corrupt bastard George Steinbrenner in the Hall of Fame before Charlie O. (or Bill Veeck, for that matter), I’m not going to be very happy.

-- Bill James—Bill James made statistical analysis mainstream, which is how nitwits like myself wound up reading every word he wrote and why we now write on our own. I’m not sure if he gets credit or blame for this, but he definitely gets my thanks.

-- Ernie Kaufman—he used to be on some radio show late at night giving football picks, but he would always include good trends to go with the picks. I loved these trends, which became the genesis for the website you’re reading right now. Actually wish I could tell you more about Mr Kaufman—I think he might have appeared on Roy Firestone’s show on ESPN every now and then, but he was a big influence in how I think about handicapping.

                        Athlete division:
-- Tom Burleson—Played center for the 1974 national champs at NC State, then played for a few teams in the NBA. He is my all-time favorite basketball player. When I was 15, he was sitting on the bench at halftime of a game at Boston Garden. I walked up to him, tapped him on the shoulder and asked for his autograph.

His coach at the time was Bill Russell, who looked up from his stat sheet and damn near killed me with his stare. I quickly retreated. Burleson got into a fight with Paul Silas a few minutes later and got tossed. People were throwing popcorn at my friend Jim Craig and me because he was openly rooting for the Sonics. An interesting night.

-- Bobby Orr—Revolutionalized hockey being an offensive defenseman; career was shortened by bad knees. Got to meet him at a celebrity softball game; very nice man, and if you ask him a question, he’ll answer honestly.

-- Arnold Palmer— I used to coach Little League with a guy who had a big ego; the guy was an excellent golfer, and the year we coached together, Mr Palmer came to Albany to play in a charity tournament. The day after the event, I asked him how he enjoyed meeting Arnold Palmer. This guy was pretty rich and wasn’t impressed by much; his eyes got big like a little kid and he said, “It was the greatest day of my life.” ‘nuff said.

-- David Thompson—It was before ESPN, so not too many people know that David Thompson was a better college player than Michael Jordan, a lot better. Off-court stuff hampered his pro career, but he was still pretty damn good for the Nuggets, scoring 13,422 points. Think he still works for the Bobcats but wow, what a great, great college player, and this was before the shot clock.

                        The top 5:
                        5) Vince Ferragamo is probably the last good passing QB from Nebraska; he led the Rams to Super Bowl XIV and almost upset the mighty Steelers. Too bad he jumped to the CFL and ruined his career; Rams might have won a Super Bowl earlier than they did.

                        4) Biff Pocoroba—When you share an unusual first name with someone, you follow their career and root for them. Always like to say that Dale Murphy became an outfielder because Biff beat him out as catcher, which doesn’t make it true, but he did play in the 1978 All-Star Game and once hit a game-winning double off Tom Seaver on Monday Night Baseball, back when that was kind of a big deal. He owns a sausage company company in Georgia now, I think.

                        3) Jack Youngblood—Played 2.5 playoff games with a broken freakin’ leg. Got inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton in 2001, then collided with me in the airport the following Tuesday, on our way home, a month before 9/11. Good guy, fun to talk with, but it was weird because I’m bigger than he is and he was a great defensive end. Maybe I need to go on a diet.

                        2) Catfish Hunter—Began rooting for him when I was 5, because they misspelled his name on the back of his rookie card. Never played in the minor leagues. Pitched five innings in the long ’67 All-Star Game, pitched a perfect game the next year, when I was 8, won three World Series rings from 1972-74. Won’t mention anything that happened after 1974, other than he was rightfully inducted in Cooperstown in 1987, and I’m glad I was there to see it.

                        1) Kurt Warner—They have to make a movie about this guy someday, the grocery store stockboy-turned-two-time NFL MVP. He played an Arenaball game in Albany in 1995 or ’96, won it 77-76, and three years later, he led my Rams to their only Super Bowl championship. Was lucky enough to meet him in August ’04. Very polite, just like you see on TV. Living proof that sometimes, nice guys finish first.
