Wednesday’s betting tips: Early bettors jump on Phillies

    Weather to watch

Meteorologists expect temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s when the Philadelphia Phillies head to St. Louis for Game 4. About 7 mph winds are expected to blow toward the third base line with a zero percent chance of precipitation.

    Who’s hot

MLB: Philadelphia has won five of its last six.

WNBA: Minnesota is 19-7 against the spread in its last 26 home games.

    Who’s not

MLB: The over is just 2-5-1 in the last eight meetings between St. Louis and Philadelphia.

WNBA: Atlanta is 0-4 against the number in its last four meetings with Minnesota.

    Key stat

22 – If you’re talking about parity in the NFL, consider this: A total of 22 games from Week 3 and Week 4 were decided by seven or fewer points, the most in any two-week period in NFL history. This week 11 of 13 games on the board currently have pointspreads set at seven or fewer points. A total of 35 games through four weeks have been decided by seven or fewer points, which also an all-time high.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals – Despite his finger injury, Holliday managed to squeeze a big pinch-hit single through the right side of the infield in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s 3-2 loss. Look for the Cards to have him ready as their first pinch hitter off the bench again on Wednesday if needed.

    Game of the day

Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals (+105, 8)

    Notable quotable

“The fun will be in February when you guys are interviewing us up in Indy. That’ll be fun. Very bold prediction. But I’m gonna stand by it.” – Redskins running back Tim Hightower told CSNWashington.com about playing in the Super Bowl in Indianapolis. The Redskins are on their bye this week and are currently set around +4500 to win the Super Bowl.

    Notes and tips

Angel Hernandez is scheduled to be behind the plate when Philadelphia heads to St. Louis for Game 4. Hernandez saw home teams go just 14-21 in the regular season while the under was 19-14 in the games he worked. The early line for Wednesday’s matchup has the visiting Phillies pegged as -115 favorites with a 7.5-run total. About 61 percent of *********** Consensus bettors are currently backing Philadelphia.

The Atlanta Dream are expected to have 6-foot-5 center Erika de Souza back in the lineup for Wednesday’s Game 2 of the WNBA finals. She left the team midway through the playoffs to play for Brazil in the Olympic qualifiers and her presence in the middle should help the Dream deal with Minnesota center Rebekkah Brunson, who went off for 26 points and 11 rebounds in Game 1’s victory. The Lynx outrebounded the Dream 40-28 and outscored them 52-30 in the paint. The Lynx are set as 5.5-point home favorites for Game 2.

Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel is feeling better and expects to play in Saturday's game against Wake Forest. Manuel injured his non-throwing shoulder in a loss to Oklahoma on Sept. 17. He practiced for the first time since the injury on Monday. Manuel said his range of motion and strength have improved greatly from two weeks ago. However, coach Jimbo Fisher was non-committal when asked if Manuel or redshirt freshman Clint Trickett would play against Wake Forest. Trickett threw for 336 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in his first career start with Manuel out, a 36-30 loss to Clemson. Florida State is currently set as at 13-point favorite this week.

        Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Baltimore Ravens lead NFL in takeaways with 14; five other teams have 11.

-- Lions/49ers (+8) lead the NFL in takeaway margin; surprisingly, the Steelers (-10) are last in this important category.

-- Pittsburgh has one takeaway in four games; Miami/Seattle have two each, which helps explain their poor records.

-- Ohio State's offense is ranked 108th in country. Out of 120 teams.

-- Kid from Carson HS in Nevada kicked a 64-yard field goal last week, longer than any field goal in NFL history.

-- Underdogs are 10-6 vs spread in NFL divisional games so far; home underdogs are 4-2, home favorites 4-6.

        **********************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) Finally saw Moneyball last week; being an A's fan since the mid-60's, I came at it from a different direction than most of you, but it was alright, other than making Billy Beane look like a combination of Gandhi, Vince Lombardi and well........Brad Pitt. Thats Hollywood for you.

        12) The movie does an incredible hatchet job on manager Art Howe, who was 600-533 in seven years as Oakland manager, 205-119 the last couple years. Movie made it look like Howe was a spectator while Billy Beane orchestrated the whole thing. Does that mean Bob Geren was a spectator during the debacle of the last four years? I'm just asking.......

Another thing, the actor that plays Howe looks EXACTLY like Whitey Herzog, and that was distracting, but thats probably a minor point.

        11) One little mistake bothered me a lot; in the credits, they spelled relief pitcher Jim Mecir's name wrong. Mecir pitched for 11 years in the major leagues, 4.5 years with the A's. His name is in the Baseball Encyclopedia. No excuse for spelling it wrong.

        10) After watching Cam Newton play for a month, I could make a case for him being one of the best 10 QBs in the NFL. If you started the NFL all over again now and re-drafted, Newton would definitely be one of the first five quarterbacks taken. He's been that good so far.

        9) Story popped up out of nowhere this week that Bill Hodges, who was Larry Bird's college coach, is now teaching history/coaching high school basketball down in Virginia. Hodges has been all over since Indiana State fired him three years after Bird left Terre Haute in 1979.

        8) Used to be a guy on TV infomercials named Don Lapre who bragged how easy it was to make money while not working very hard. Turns out he was ripping people off, scamming over 220,000 people out of $47M+ over the years. While awaiting trail for fraud in Arizona, gutless bastard killed himself. Anyone who tells you that its easy to make money, run in the other direction. Fast. No such thing as easy money.

        7) Denver Broncos have started five drives in enemy territory; should get a score on every one of those, but Broncos have no TDs, one field goal on those five drives, which helps explain their 1-3 record.

        6) Big reason why Giants are 3-1, other than then the refs bailing them out in Glendale Sunday, is fact that they've scored 13 touchdowns while trying only two field goals. When they get close, they score TDs.

        5) Wes Welker has 40 catches for 616 yards through four games, which puts him on pace for 160 catches for 2,464 yards, which won't happen of course, but he's been huge so far. Helps to be smart, and helps to play on same team with the game's best quarterback.

        4) This is what well-prepared teams with a great quarterback do to start games-- the Patriots' opening drive in their first four games.....
Week 1, at Miami-- six plays, 78 yards, TD
Week 2, San Diego-- 12 plays, 92 yards, TD
Week 3, at Buffalo-- nine plays, 80 yards, TD
Week 4, at Oakland-- nine plays, 80 yards, TD

Dallas and Houston have 17 points on their four opening drives. Seven teams haven't scored on an opening drive yet.

        3) Then there is Jacksonville, which in its last three games, has given up two safeties and lost the ball on downs on its opening drive. They did get a touchdown on their first drive of the season.

        2) Jaguars have had a total of 45 drives in their four games, scoring three touchdowns, kicking six field goals with 16 3/outs. Coaches who use a rookie quarterback either want to get fired or have a longterm contract.

        1) Finally. South Carolina is benching troubled senior QB Stephen Garcia and will play Connor Shaw this week. Garcia has been nothing but trouble off the field for Steve Spurrier throughout his Gamecock career, and his play hasn't justified all the second chances he's gotten. Baffling that the Head Ball Coach hasn't been able to develop a QB in Columbia.

                Wednesday, October 5

Brewers much better at home (59-24) than on foreign soil (39-43), can they wrap up series on road? Saunders is 3-1, 3.58 in his last four starts; he gave up two runs in seven IP vs Brewers July 20, a game Milwaukee won in 10 innings. Wolf is 1-1, 6.27 in his last three starts; he was 0-2, 6.75 in two starts vs Arizona this season, allowing 10 runs in 13.1 IP. Arizona won six of its last eight home games. Home team won all three games in this series.

Oswalt is 3-3, 4.24 in his last seven starts; he was 1-1, 3.21 in his three starts vs St Louis this year, blanking Cardinals for seven innings only 18 days ago. Under is 4-0-1 in his last five outings. St Louis won six of last seven Jackson starts (2-0, 3.26 in his last six outings); he didn't make a start vs Philly this season. Holliday being restricted to pinch-hitting has obviously hurt St Louis offense- they've been outscored 13-7 from sixth inning on in this series.

Payoff pitch: Wednesday's best mound matchup
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roy Oswalt, Philadelphia Phillies vs. Edwin Jackson, St. Louis Cardinals

                    Roy Oswalt, (9-10, 3.69 ERA)

The last time Roy Oswalt headed to St. Louis for a big playoff was a wizard. That was back in 2005 when he was with the Astros and he held St. Louis to just three hits and a single run over seven innings to help Houston claim the NL pennant.

Oswalt is 5-1 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 postseason appearances, but this has been a bit of a tough year for the veteran. He had two separate stints on the DL with back problems and had only 93 strikeouts in 24 starts this season.

That said, he did shut out the Cards over seven innings while striking out seven last month and fired six scoreless innings in his regular-season finale against Atlanta.

"I feel like I can still compete," Oswalt told reporters. "When you get to the point where you don't feel like you can compete, that's when you start doubting about pitching. I actually have a few more pitches than I did when I first started. I feel like I can do it another three or four or five years."

                    Edwin Jackson (12-9, 3.79 ERA)

The St. Louis Cardinals had their eye on Edwin Jackson for a while before they landed him from the White Sox at the deadline. In 13 appearances with the Cards, the 28-year-old is 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA and now has a chance to make a big impression on his sixth big league team.

This will be his first postseason start, but Philadelphia doesn’t have much experience against Jackson as no member on the club has more than seven lifetime at-bats against him.

"They have a lot of depth in the lineup, and there's really no easy outs. You just have to go out and be aggressive, but at the same time, you can't give them too much credit. You have to have confidence in your pitches, and at the end of the day, either you get it done or you don't, there's no in between."

Jackson has been consistent since joining the Cards, allowing more than four runs just twice while yielding only one home run in his last seven starts.

He pitched one inning of relief, giving up a couple of hits but no runs in a 13-6 win over Houston on Sept. 27.

Milwaukee Brewers at Arizona Diamondbacks (-107)

The Arizona Diamondbacks played desperate baseball in Game 3 of the NLDS Tuesday, and were able to force a Game 4 at Chase Field Wednesday night.

Arizona needed a Grand Slam from rookie Paul Goldshmidt to spark an 8-1 victory over the Brewers, who continue to struggle outside of Miller Park. Milwaukee is the lone playoff team with a losing road record, finishing the regular season 39-42 in opposing parks.

“They're a tough team, especially in (Chase Field)”, Milwaukee starter Randy Wolf, who takes the ball in Game 4, told the media of Arizona. “They're one of those teams you really want to keep off base. You want to slow the game down because they have the tendency to bring the intensity on their side, and you want to slow that down. They're a good team, you've got to respect them."

The Brewers managed only one run on a solo shot from Corey Hart in Game 3. For the year, Milwaukee averaged just over four runs and hit .246 BA on the road – a far cry from its .277 BA at home, which was tops in the National League.

The Brewers do have the safety net of Miller Park in Game 5 if they fail again to close the series out on the road.

"It's not a 'do or die' game," manager Ron Roencike told reporters. "We need to come out and play a solid game, but it's certainly not 'do or die.'"

                    Pick: Arizona -107
