Thursday’s betting tips: Bettors jumping all over USF

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: UTEP is riding a 7-2 run against the spread in its last nine games against a team with a winning record.

NCAAF: Pitt is 12-4 against the number in its last 16 conference games.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: Houston is 1-7 against the spread in its last eight games on turf.

NCAAF: South Florida is 0-6 against the spread in its last six Thursday games.

    Key stat

2.8 – Just 2.8 percent of NFL teams that start the season 0-3 end up making the playoffs. Right now St. Louis, Minnesota, Kansas City, Indianapolis and Miami are all winless through three games.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Terrence Mitchell, South Florida - South Florida’s punt return game could be in real trouble heading into Thursday’s date with Pitt. Sophomore wideout and kick returner Terrence Mitchell isn’t expected to play as he recovers from a concussion he suffered last week. Coach Skip Holtz said the return job was wide open earlier this week.

    Game of the day

South Florida at Pittsburgh (2.5, 51.5) - As of Wednesday evening, about 73 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were backing the USF Bulls.

    Notable quotable

"I don't know. Really, I don't know. Obviously he's going to benefit from getting as much reps as he can get before Friday, because of all the time he missed. I don't think he's quite there yet." – New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman about what he expects from third baseman Alex Rodriguez in the postseason. Rodriguez was held out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with his sore right knee. He is also dealing with a sprained left thumb. The 36-year-old has just 13 hits in 68 at-bats since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 21.

    Notes and tips

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said Marques Colston has been cleared to play in this week's game against Jacksonville. Colston suffered a broken collarbone at the end of the Saints' season-opening loss to Green Bay. He was expected to be sidelined a minimum of four weeks, but Payton told reporters that Colston will play Sunday. Colston, who underwent knee surgery in the offseason, had six receptions for 81 yards and a fumble in Week 1. He has gone over 1,000 yards receiving in four of his first five seasons with the Saints. New Orleans is a 6.5-point favorite at Jacksonville this week.

UTEP quarterback Nick Lamaison has been reportedly been throwing pain-free in practice this week but still may be used in a rotation with Carson Meger on Thursday against Houston. "I feel better than I thought I'd feel," Lamaison told reporters about his shoulder injury. "There's a little soreness, but I played around it. This week I feel a little better about it. I won't say I felt the same about it last week. "This week I'm ready to go." UTEP is a 16.5-point underdog at home to Houston.

If you missed possibly the best day of baseball in decades, Evan Longoria hit a walk-off homer for the Tampa Bay Rays to the New York Yankees in the 12th inning, claiming the AL wild card just moments after the Boston Red Sox imploded in the bottom of the ninth against Baltimore. A little earlier in the evening, the Atlanta Braves fell apart in the 13th inning against the Philadelphia Phillies, handing the St. Louis Cardinals the NL wild card after they cruised to an 8-0 win over Houston. The Cardinals will now face the Phillies while the Rays will battle the Texas Rangers.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 4 rapidly approaching.......

-- Jaguars are 3-8 vs spread when playing NFC teams.

-- 49ers are 1-7-1 vs spread in game after their last nine wins.

-- Texans failed to cover last six non-divisional home games.

-- Broncos covered twice in last seven road games.

-- Cleveland covered once in last six home games.

-- Bears covered one of last six games as a home favorite.

      *******************

Armadillo: Thursday's Extra List of 13: Wrapping up a wild night of baseball

      13) You knew it was going to be a weird day when Miguel Batista tosses a 2-hit, 123-pitch shutout, after Jose Reyes took himself out of the game in the first freakin' inning to protect his lead in the batting race. By time the day's games ended 11 hours later, Reyes' stunt was long forgotten.

      12) On the morning of September 1st, Braves led St Louis by 8.5 games in the NL Wild Card race, and Bronx led Tampa Bay by 9.5 games in the AL race. Boston? They were in first place in the AL East. Whoops.

      11) The $165M Red Sox went 7-20 in September, the last indignity being a rain delay in the 7th inning Wednesday, when Boston led 3-2. Down in St Pete, the Rays looked dead, trailing Bronx 7-0 in the middle of the 8th inning. At that point, Tampa Bay's win expectation was 0.3%. Not 3%. 0.3%. They were dead, only Joe Girardi wouldn't let them die.

      10) Girardi used 11 pitchers in this game, running guys in and out until he found someone who could blow the lead (Boone Logan). He used Hughes for an inning, AJ Burnett for a batter, even used an old basketball player from NC State (Andrew Brackman) for an inning. Finally, Rays scored six in the 8th inning off Logan/Ayala and it was 7-6 after 8, and since Rivera pitched Tuesday and the playoffs start Friday, Corey Wade was closing.

      9) So by the time the Red Sox game in Baltimore resumed, Tampa had a shot to win, but Boston was 77-0 when they led after eight innings, and they had closer Papelbon on the hill. Looked like the worst Boston would get out of the night was a game at the Trop tomorrow. Not so fast.

      8) The immortal Nolan Reimold doubled to rightcenter off Papelbon to tie the game in the 9th inning for Baltimore; the Orioles win it when Robert Andino gets a hit, so now the Red Sox' entire season depends on Bronx winning down in Tampa Bay, but Girardi is running out of pitchers.

      7) Down in St Pete, Corey Wade serves up a gopher ball to Minnesotan Dan Johnson, whose last big league hit was April 27; Girardi immediately yanks Wade for Scott Proctor, even though Proctor is his last pitcher. It bears repeating that Dan Johnson hit .119 this year. His homer coming a night after the Rays pulled a bases loaded triple play makes you think that there might be a movie made about all this someday.

      6) All of which means that Scott Proctor and his 9.00 ERA are in it until the end for Bronx-- he threw 56 pitches in this game, when his previous season high was 52. Imagine being a Boston fan and watch your season ride on the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Barons having to beat the Rays- thats who Girardi had on the field at the end, a damn minor league team.

      5) Meanwhile, the Phillies tied their game in Atlanta off closer Kimbrel in the 9th inning and the Braves were playing for their lives after Cardinals won in Houston. St Louis finished the season on a 23-9 roll. All of this is going on at once and my thumb is sore from switching channels. Not the usual fare for a Wednesday night.

Hunter Pence, who started the season playing for the horrific Astros, blooped a single to right to end the Braves' season, as Atlanta lost its last five games to end the season. Meanwhile in Miami, Marlin hitters had 17 misses on 36 swings in six futile innings trying to get a run off of Stephen Strasburg. Washington is going to be really good fairly soon.

      4) All hell breaks loose in St Pete when Evan Longoria smacks his second homer of the night, giving Tampa Bay an 8-7 win and making skipper Joe Maddon, who the Professor says looks like Barry Weiss in Storage Wars, a leg up on the greatest managing job this century. It'll be hard to top.

      3) Cubs' Starlin Castro ended the regular season by reaching base in his last 40 games; record for that is 84, held by Ted Williams. It is the single most underrated record in baseball, because walks count and Williams has three of the four longest streaks ever, which is quite remarkable.

      2) So as network TV execs projectile vomit over Red Sox' demise, we're looking at Rays-Rangers and Tigers-Bronx in the AL, and Philly-Cards and Arizona-Milwaukee in the NL. AL starts Friday, NL Saturday.

      1) Season ended when Gio Gonzalez/Andrew Bailey combined to shut the Mariners out 2-0. Oakland's 74-88 season was disappointing, but not as horrificly dismal as the Braves or Red Sox, who spent big money and still missed the playoffs. $165M doesn't buy as much as it used to.

Last thing-- it is only fair to tip the Armadillo's cap to Bud Selig, who came up with this idea to start the baseball season on a Friday, and end it on a Wednesday. If this had happened on a Sunday, I would've missed it, and up until this year, baseball season always ended on a Sunday.
