Monday’s betting tips: ‘Skins riding ATS streak vs. Dallas

    Who’s hot

NFL: Washington has covered the number in seven of their last nine meetings with the Dallas Cowboys.

MLB: St. Louis has won 20 of its last 28 games overall.

MLB: The Washington Nationals have won their last eight road games.

    Who’s not

NFL: Dallas is riding a 3-5-1 slump against the spread dating back to last season.

MLB: Kansas City has won only four of its last 18 games in Minnesota.

MLB: Pittsburgh has won only seven of its last 51 games in Milwaukee.

    Key stat

25 - The Colorado Rockies set a franchise record by amassing 25 hits in a 19-3 romp at Houston on Sunday. Jordan Pacheco, Ty Wigginton and Tommy Field had four hits apiece to help the Rockies surpass the previous record of 24. The Rockies are set as +120 underdogs at San Francisco Monday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin has officially been ruled out for Monday's game against the NFC East rival Washington Redskins. Austin reeled in nine catches for 143 yards and three touchdowns last Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, but exited with a hamstring injury. The ailment is rumored to cost Austin until perhaps after their bye week. Kevin Ogletree will start in Austin's place on Monday.

    Game of the day

Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys (3.5, 45.5)

    Notable quotable

"It's pretty emotional, obviously. You have the best fans in baseball; over 3 million people every year come and support this ballclub. Obviously, it's not over. Our season's not over. And I just want to make sure that I stay focused and do what I need to do." – Albert Pujols on the standing ovation he received from Cardinals fans Sunday in what could end up being his last home game with St. Louis if the club doesn’t make the playoffs. Pujols becomes an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

    Notes and tips

The St. Louis Cardinals stayed alive in the wild card race with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Chicago Cubs on Sunday. The Cardinals pulled to within one game of the Atlanta Braves in the National League wild card chase. The Braves dropped a 3-0 decision against the Washington Nationals on Sunday.

Tiger Woods has hired Joe LaCava as his third full-time caddie. LaCava served as Dustin Johnson’s bag man most recently, but has extensive experience on the tour. "Joe is an outstanding caddie, and I have known him for many years. I've personally seen the great job he did for Freddie [Couples],” Woods told reporters. “I'm anxious for us to be working together."

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell will not be with the team Monday for the start of the final series of the season at Chicago. Farrell's son, Luke, is scheduled to undergo major surgery. Bench coach Don Wakamatsu will take the place of Farrell. He also filled in when Farrell missed 10 games due to pneumonia.Meanwhile, slugger Jose Bautista left Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a contusion on his left knee. Bautista crashed into the wall in the first inning which chasing down a fly ball - which turned into an inside-the-park homer - by Ben Zobrist. The 29-year-old Bautista played five innings before being replaced by Mark Teahen. He has been listed as day-to-day. Bautista entered the game batting .305 with 43 homers and 103 RBIs this season.

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six wealthiest people in America, according to Forbes magazine.....
      6) Christy Walton, $24.5B age 56. Guess Wal-Mart makes money.

T4) Charles Koch, $25B age 75. His money is diversified. So is mine.

T4) David Koch, $25B age 71 Apparently these two are related.

      3) Larry Ellison, $33B age 67. Tried to buy the Warriors in 2009.

      2) Warren Buffett, $39B age 81. Wonder if he wants to adopt?

      1) Bill Gates $59B age 55. Must be good to be him.

      ***********************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

      13) In their three games so far, Vikings led 17-7, 17-0, 20-0 at halftime, but they've lost all three games. Not sure this has ever happened before, but it ain't good, especially for a team with an old quarterback. Lions won in the Metrodome for the first time in 14 years, 26-23 in OT.

Minnesota has outscored its three opponents 54-7 in the first half, and yet they're 0-3. Vikings are 1 for 15 on third downs in the second half this year while their opponents are 13 for 22- they were outgained 190-6 in the third quarter by Detroit Sunday. Getting consistently outplayed after halftime means the coaching staff isn't making good adjustments.

      12) Detroit is now 3-0 for the first time since 1980; Buffalo is also 3-0, as they rallied back from down 21-0 to beat Patriots 34-31. Its good for the NFL when these previously downtrodden franchises get invigorated.

      11) Bills had the ball 12 times Sunday; they started 10 of the 12 drives 80+ yards from the goal line- they had TD drives of 95/96 drives, but the four INTs of Brady, including one in the red zone, were also huge.

      10) Very bad day for the Eagles, losing at home to the Giants, and losing Michael Vick to multiple injuries, including a broken right hand. Not sure how long a broken bone in his non-throwing hand will keep him out.

      9) I'm not going to vent about the Rams just yet, but lets say its pretty damn sad when I'm thumbing thru an NFL Media Guide on September 25 looking for assistant coaches who might coach the team next year. Their talent level isn't this bad, but the thing that irked me was punting twice in the last 7:00 last Monday, when they trailed 28-16. Never give up.

They simply were not ready to play against the Ravens Sunday. I'll let you decide whose responsibility that is.

      8) Early in second quarter of the Jet-Raider game, there was a play when they called both intentional grounding and roughing the passer; pretty sure I've never seen those two things called on the same play before.

      7) 85 pass attempts in Buffalo, no sacks. Bills are only team in the last 60 years to win in consecutive weeks, overcoming deficits of 18+ points in both games. In their two home games, they've been outscored 41-3 in the first half. Buffalo trailed 21-0 Sunday, but now they're in 1st place.

      6) Bizarre weather just before halftime made Jacksonville-Carolina game a little weird; a monsoon blew thru Charlotte, making the field a quagmire, but Jaguars somehow went 76 yards in two plays in 0:17 for their only TD of the game. Field remained soaked the rest of the game, which made the footballs wet, giving the two rookie QBs even more trouble.

Cam Newton didn't have a great day (18-34/158) but he did what really good QBs do; with game on the line in cruddy weather, he led his team to the winning TD. It wasn't pretty, but it is his first NFL win.

      5) As for home teams who played their first two games on the road, they were 2-2, with underdogs covering all four games. Road teams that played their first two games at home were 1-3 SU, 3-1 vs spread, with underdogs covering all four of those games too.

      4) At 3:40 Sunday afternoon, with eight early games in the fourth quarter, all of them had a scoring margin of six or less points. Good stuff.

      3) Over was 22-8-2 in NFL's first two weeks, but under made comeback Sunday, going 9-5. 14 TDs were scored in Week 1 on either special teams or defense, but since then, defenses have scored five TDs in 31 games, as two were scored in the Steeler-Colt game, with no special teams scores the last two weeks. My Rams gave up two of those five TDs in the last two weeks- their offense has allowed a defensive score in all three games this season. Terrific.

      2) Teams that lost the turnover battle were 2-9 Sunday, as Chargers (-14) and Saints (-4) won close games at home (20-17/40-33), despite having turnover ratios of -1. Thru three weeks, the team with fewer turnovers in 28-6 SU. In the 12 games where turnovers were even, favorites are 7-5 vs the spread. Overall, favorites are 19-24-3 against the spread.

      1) Five teams didn't turn the ball over Sunday; Minnesota was the only loser, but they played Detroit, who also didn't commit a turnover. Other three teams won their games by 6-10-13 points.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Doug Fister, Detroit Tigers (10-13, 2.94 ERA)

Fister will be the team’s No. 2 starter in the playoffs and he deserves the spot behind Verlander. Since coming over from the Mariners, Fister is 6-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 59 1/3 innings. Despite a fastball that tops out in the high 80s, the righty has 46 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings with the Tigers.

"I've never thrown hard," Fister told reporters. "When I have tried to focus on getting strikeouts, it doesn't work for me. So I still take the mentality that I'm going to try to make them hit it, and hopefully, the right contact comes out of it."

Jaime Garcia, St. Louis Cardinals (13-7, 3.45 ERA)

The Cardinals have won each of Garcia’s last four starts and he hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of those outings. All four runs the Mets scored with him on the hill last week were unearned and he also struck out five batters over 7 2/3 innings.

                Slumping

Kevin Slowey, Minnesota Twins (0-7, 6.54 ERA)

Kevin Slowey had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning in his last outing, doing his best to pick up his first win of the season. Then everything fell apart again. He gave up five runs before getting the hook after 6/23 innings and has now allowed 16 runs over his last three starts.

"I think every win is important, not just for me, but for this team," Slowey told reporters. "I'm not going out there and trying to make sure that I get a win so much as we need to win games in here."

Chris Schwinden, New York Mets (0-2, 5.06 ERA)
The Mets have lost all three of Schwinden’s starts this season, but he is giving them a shot every time he climbs the hill. The rookie looked to be in good shape to pick up his first MLB win when he hit the showers with a 4-3 lead over the Cardinals. After allowed three runs over six innings, the bullpen blew it by allowing three more in the seventh.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  HOT TEAM: Arizona Diamondbacks

                  THIS SEASON: 93-66
                  LAST WEEK: 5-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Dodgers for three.

THE SKINNY: Give credit to the Diamondbacks for sticking to it, even after clinching the NL West. Losing with non-regulars in the lineup is no way for a fresh-faced team like Arizona to head into the playoffs, and the Diamondbacks have played like they’re not satisfied.

They closed Sunday’s action, having won four in a row, and six of the last seven. They headed into Monday’s series opener with Los Angeles, having allowed two runs or less in five of their last seven games.

Second baseman Aaron Hill, acquired from Toronto for the stretch run, has been a breath of fresh air, and only adds another weapon to their postseason arsenal. Hill enters Monday’s action with a .328 average.

                  COLD TEAM: Boston Red Sox

                  THIS SEASON: 89-70
                  LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Orioles for three.

THE SKINNY: Red Sox Nation is in panic mode as Boston headed to Baltimore for Monday’s series opener. The Red Sox entered September in a fight for the division crown with the Yankees, and are closing it in a wild-card fight with the Rays. Terry Francona’s crew was just 6-18 through Sunday in September, and it’s been a snowball rolling downhill.

Starter Jon Lester has lost his last three decisions, and closer Jonathan Papelbon has one save all month. Those are two key components to any meaningful run in the playoffs, should they hang on to win the wild-card.

                  OVER TEAM: Detroit Tigers

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 82-65-12
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 5-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Indians for three.

THE SKINNY: We try our best to run from sports clichés here, but we can’t resist on this one, as the Tigers are clearly “a team that no one wants to face in the postseason.” After treading water through most of the summer, the Tigers turned it on late and did more than just win a bad division.

They cranked up an offense that had been so-so, and with the bats booming, combined with all-everything starter Justin Verlander, Detroit indeed may be one of the best value plays of the playoffs that start later this week.

Consider the fact that the Tigers entered Monday’s series opener with Cleveland, having scored eight or more runs nine times in September, and twice they scored 14 or more.

Sunday’s lineup vs. Baltimore featured four hitters with averages above .290, and both Victor Martinez (101) and Miguel Cabrera (103) have both topped with 100-RBI mark. The overs, as a result, have been flowing, and there’s a good chance it can continue vs. the playing-out-the-string Indians.

                  UNDER TEAM: Washington Nationals

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 74-78-6
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Marlins for three.

THE SKINNY: Clearly, many won’t be tuned into a season-ending series between Washington and Florida, which began on Monday. But for under players, it might be a way to sneak out a few nondescript wins before the year closes.

Washington, which took advantage of an already-clinched Phillies team last week, has shown some poise and precision on the mound of late, and it’s resulted in quite a few unders. Starters Chien-Ming Wang and Ross Detwiler defeated the wild-card hungry Braves on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, by a combined 7-1 score.

Listen, Davey Johnson’s crew has a long way to go, especially with the bats. But if nothing else, this staff has shown enough promise to think Nationals fans can head into the offseason with some optimism.

Hot lines: Monday’s best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers (-140, 8)

The Detroit Tigers are still eying home field advantage in the playoffs and are keeping their foot on the gas heading down the stretch.

They hammered out four home runs in Sunday’s 10-6 win over Baltimore that saw Miguel Cabrera hit his 29th homer of the season and go 2-for-3 at the dish. Detroit’s slugger now leads the AL with a .341 batting average, just ahead of Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez, who went 0-for-4 Sunday afternoon.

However, Cabrera left the game after seven innings with what the team described as “light-headedness.” As of now, it’s uncertain whether he’ll miss any time, but the club may give him a day off with the way the offense is going lately.

Detroit is averaging 8.4 runs during its current five-game winning streak and the Tigers have won 20 of their last 26 home games against Cleveland.

                    Pick: Tigers

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels (-130, 7)

C.J. Wilson will be Texas’ starting pitcher when the club plays its first postseason game, but first he’ll have a tune-up start Monday.
Don’t expect him to stumble before the finish line.

"Last year, we all experienced the circus atmosphere of the playoffs," Wilson told reporters. "There is a lot of flexibility and weird stuff happening. You have to stay in your own little bubble, stay as regular as possible and not make a big deal out of it."

Wilson isn’t making a big deal of his recent blister issues either. He had one pop on the middle finger of his pitching hand in his last start, but says he has learned to deal with blister problems. The lefty has allowed just five combined runs over his last five starts.

                    Pick: Rangers

College football odds: Week 5 opening line report

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema didn’t beat around the bush in his postgame press conference Saturday. He was quick to let everyone know that he and his well-balanced bunch of Badgers have been waiting for Nebraska since the season started.

With no disrespect to UNLV, Oregon State, Northern Illinois and South Dakota, which all ended up in Badgers’ victories, Wisconsin has had Week 5 highlighted for a good long while.

For on Saturday night, the Badgers and Cornhuskers, two Top 10 programs, will collide in Madison, Wis., in Nebraska’s first game as a member of the Big Ten.

So, you can understand that this is a big deal to Bielema. And he’s not afraid to admit it.

“I’m very excited for this week to finally get here. You guys might’ve heard, but we’re playing Nebraska, so there are some fun things to prepare this week,” he said. “It’s a really exciting time for us because you put in all this hard work and effort into getting through the nonconference schedule, playing as clean as you can and get into a Big Ten race. There’s also the opportunity to play at home and at night. It’ll be a great scene, a great environment for college football.”

And it’s a game that will be heavily bet, for sure.

“Nebraska will always be well respected by the books,” Pete Korner, of Esportclub, LLC, in Las Vegas told ***********. “Even when they’re not that good of a team, they draw big money every week. And with this Nebraska team being pretty good, that only adds to it.”

But Korner also realizes the power and precision with which Wisconsin runs things, especially at home. As such, he made the Badgers 7-point favorites.

“It’ll be interesting and entertaining, and it should be high scoring,” Korner said. “Wisconsin is a favorite, but not an overwhelming one. We’ll see how much Nebraska money we get with this line.”

And with that, let’s take a look at some of next week’s other marquee games:

                        South Florida (+1.5) at Pittsburgh

“South Florida is a good team, very athletic and has a chance to show something to the nation here,” Korner said. “We have respect for Pittsburgh, but the reason they’re the favorites is because of the home field. That’s it. South Florida can definitely win this one.”

                        Alabama (-3.5) at Florida

“We wanted to make sure we got it over the key number 3, so that’s why we have the half there,” Korner said. “Alabama is just so good right now, we could have gone higher. We were all on Alabama when we first looked at this one. But we’ll see where the line goes.”

                        Auburn (+10.5) at South Carolina

“Not expecting a close game. We could have gone all the way up to 14.5 on this one for South Carolina,” Korner said. “But that was a little too high for a tough SEC game. Still, South Carolina is better all around.”

                        Kentucky (+27) at LSU

“We don’t like Kentucky at all,” Korner said. “But we’re hoping they can slow the game down a little. LSU looks very good these days.”

Arkansas (+3) vs. Texas A&M (Arlington, Texas)

“We didn’t have much of an opinion here. These are not great teams, and there’s not a lot there,” Korner said. “No home field, but it is in Texas, so we gave a slight edge to A&M, but not much.”

Michigan State (+3) at Ohio State

“In Big Ten play now, and we expect a really close one here. Both teams are very even,” Korner said. “Purely a home field line here. Ohio State has done nothing for us, and they are just not the kind of team we’re used to seeing there. So, they’ll have to prove something to us.”

                        Clemson (+7) at Virginia Tech

“Should be a really good, entertaining ACC game with a total in the 50s,” Korner said. “Virginia Tech is tough at home, but Clemson can definitely win here. They’re showing some great signs and may have what it takes.”

                        Notre Dame (-17) at Purdue

“Not a close one here. The Notre Dame offense should be able dominate, start to finish,” Korner said. “We are expecting an absolute blowout. Notre Dame is at a point in the year where they need to pile up wins, and this is a good place and time to get another one.”

                        UCLA (+22) at Stanford

“Good chance for Stanford to have a blowout,” Korner said. “We could have easily put this up to 24, as we really expect Stanford to have no mercy here against a team they really don’t like much.”

NFL Week 3 through the eyes of an ordinary bettor
                          By SCOTT COOLEY

The Superman tattoo on the hand of Mike Vick doesn’t make him a man of steel.

The hand is broken. The kryptonite is the offensive line.

The game will be off the board all week with Vick back in his perpetual cycle of uncertainty. But don’t waste your money on this team right now. Even if he plays, he’ll be on the sideline before the game ends.

Two straight weeks Vick has gone to the locker room with an injury, and a lead. Two straight weeks the Eagles have lost.

Philly has enough raw talent to beat the weaklings. But if the major problems continue they won’t beat good teams and they won’t make the playoffs.

Andy Reid is too stubborn to reverse his offensive strategy but that’s the only way to salvage the season. Shady McCoy is a different player this year, explosive, making cuts like Barry Sanders. They should lean on him to take pressure off a line that can't protect.

Vick’s head is ringing right now, and those aren’t dog whistles. He won’t last the season. Vince Young or Mike Kafka will soon feel his pain.

Three weeks in and the dream team is having nightmares.

                          The Good…

Run DMC can outrun Adrian Peterson all day. When he’s not injured, McFadden is the best back in the league.

Gang Green turned green trying to stop this truck Sunday. CJ2K, AD and MoJo all take a back seat to D-Mac, and don’t look now but he’s on pace for over 2,000 yards.

Al Saunders said the Raiders have more speed than the “Greatest Show on Turf” Rams, and through three games no one can argue. I can’t imagine what this offense would look like with a quality quarterback and two healthy receivers.

Speaking of health, the Saints injury report grows by the week. They lost two starters on the line Sunday but the offense didn’t skip a beat.

As long as EZ Brees is standing, it doesn’t matter who you throw out there, this offense is going to hum. How high would this team be on our list if Sean Payton doesn’t blow a couple calls in the opener and they’re undefeated with wins over the Pack, Bears and Texans?

                          The Bad…

Matty Ice is just as toxic as the beer he’s named after. This isn’t the same player we saw last season and I’m convinced he’d be in the same class as Orton and Sanchez if not for the Falcons’ flock of playmakers.

He’s got happy feet and he’s dropping his eyes at the first hint of pressure. He’s playing scared. Teams are taking away the running game and Ryan’s true colors are coming out, and they aren’t pretty.

The AFC’s reigning regular-season champ has problems too. The Hooded One said that lack of pressure up front hurt the pass defense last year.

Fat Albert wasn’t around Sunday and Mr. Harvard exposed a Chung-less secondary. This is still one of the league’s best but I’ve never seen the Pats blow a three-touchdown lead.

This defense is beyond suspect. And when Brady is making mistakes the offense can’t match what the D gives up.

Don’t forget the Pats were +28 in turnovers last year, and that masked a lot of the defensive deficiencies. Those peaks usually have a way of falling back to equilibrium.

                          The Ugly…

Players-only meetings are supposed to fix everything. I’m not sure what goes on behind those doors (maybe they hire a bunch of hookers, or get on a Love Boat), but usually something good happens.

Donovan McFlabb called a meeting after the second-half collapses the first two weeks. But it was Groundhog Day all over again for the Vikings, blowing a 20-point halftime lead this time. So now what? How do they recover?

They don’t. The division is too tough. Minnesota is done. And when your coach is listening to the media, and fans, he should be done too.

Leslie “Down Goes” Frazier went for it on fourth down in the fourth quarter instead of extending the lead to six with a field goal. Just because you’re criticized for being too conservative doesn’t mean you have to be an idiot.

What’s with these new head coaches? Jim Harbaugh pooped under pressure last week. They’re expected to immediately succeed these days but gambling isn’t the way to do it. We can’t trust these guys.

                          The Leans…

Bills -3 at Bengals - Certainly feels like a trap/letdown situation but I may fall for the bait.

Chiefs +1 vs. Vikings - Refer to above note. Kansas City showed some fight in sunny San Diego.

Giants -2½ at Cardinals - Corn on the Kolb is not the answer in Arizona, sorry Larry Fitzgerald fans.
