Sunday’s betting tips: Vick returns for “bloodbath”

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Raiders are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and the over is 5-1 in their last six overall.

NFL: The Packers are 5-1 ATS in their last six overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.

MLB: The Royals are 9-2 in their last 11 overall.

MLB: The under is 13-3 in the Marlins’ last 16 overall and 7-1-3 in the Brewers’ last 11 overall.

WNBA: The under is 9-2 in Phoenix’s last 11 overall.

CFL: Calgary is 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven road games.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Rams are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall dating back to last season.

NFL: The Chiefs are 0-4 in their last four overall and 1-8 ATS in their last nine against the AFC.

MLB: The Rockies are 0-9 in their last nine overall.

MLB: The Red Sox are 0-6 in their last six road games.

WNBA: Indiana is 1-5 ATS in its last six trips to Atlanta.

CFL: The under is 1-7 in Hamilton’s last eight overall.

    Key stat

38.5 – Rushing yards per game for Titans’ running back Chris Johnson through the first two weeks of the season. He is averaging just 2.3 yards per carry after 33 attempts. The good news for Johnson and Tennessee, though, is that they are going up against a Denver rushing defense that is currently ranked 28th in the NFL at 131.0 yards per game.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Patriots may be firing on all cylinders, but their defense is banged up heading into Week 3. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (back) and linebacker Jerod Mayo (thigh) are both questionable for Sunday’s visit to Buffalo. Safety Patrick Chung (thumb) is also questionable, but he was recently upgraded from doubtful despite a recent Boston Herald report that he would miss the game.

New England is looking to slow down a 2-0 Bills squad that put up 41 points against Kansas City before piling on 38 at the expense of Oakland. Buffalo is hoping to end a 15-game losing streak to the Patriots.

    Biggest games on the slate

Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Bucs (-1, 46)

Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears (4, 45.5)

    Notable quotable

“Every one has been different and every one is a bloodbath. It has been a knockdown, drag out heavyweight fight, so I don’t look at the body of work over numbers of games and I will never go there and do that. That would be making a mistake.” – Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Andy Reid on his team’s head-to-head series with the New York Giants. Heading into Sunday’s showdown, in which Michael Vick is expected to play, Philly has won six in a row against the Giants dating back to 2008. It is the team’s longest streak against the Giants since a 12-game surge from 1975-81.

    Tips and notes

Alfonso Soriano of the Cubs said on Friday he hopes the Cardinals make the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean his team is not trying to knock an NL Central rival out of contention. “We want to play well, and it was great these guys didn’t let Milwaukee make any hay against us at our place,” Chicago manager Mike Quade said of a recent series win against the Brewers. “It doesn’t matter where you’re at. We’d like to beat these guys (playoff contenders) given the fact they’re in the hunt.” The Cubs are 5-3 in their last seven against teams that are already in the playoffs or were in contention at the time after losing to St. Louis 2-1 on Saturday.

The Atlanta Dream lost their Eastern Conference Finals opener at Indiana on Thursday, but don’t be surprised if they send it back to Indiana for a decisive Game 3. Atlanta won all four games against the Fever during the regular season and covered the spread on three occasions. The Dream have won seven in a row at home and are 12-1 SU in their last 13 at Philips Arena.

Of the four players who are within two shots of the lead heading into the final round of the TOUR Championship, Aaron Baddeley and K.J. Choi have won titles this season. Baddeley, tied for first at 9-under, prevailed in February at the Northern Trust Open and his last top 10 came at the PLAYERS Championship in May. Speaking of the PLAYERS, that's where Choi collected his lone 2011 title. As for Hunter Mahan and Jason Day, contending but not winning is a familiar site this year. Mahan owns eight top 10s without winning while Day has nine--including two second-place finishes at huge events (the Masters and the U.S. Open).

Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger Cats (Pick’em, 54.5)

With the Stampeders and Tiger-Cats squaring off in Moncton, New Brunswick, this could be the toughest game on the board for bettors. Being the second Touchdown Atlantic celebration, there will be lots of distractions around.

However, Calgary is fighting for first place in the West and must feel a sense of urgency. A bye week to start the playoffs will be a strong motivating factor. Also keep in mind that neither team will have much of a home advantage even if the Tiger-Cats are listed as the home team. The Stampeders are unbeaten in five road games this season and should keep that streak going.

      Pick: Calgary

          Sunday, September 25

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Streaking

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (13-13, 2.59 ERA)

Lincecum got roughed up and took the loss in two straight starts in late August and early September, but he is back to being the Lincecum of old. The righty has pitched at least seven innings and allowed no more than two runs in each of his past three starts. Over 22 innings during this span, Lincecum has given up only three runs while striking out 17 batters.

Derek Holland, Texas Rangers (15-5, 3.92 ERA)

Holland’s stellar 2011 campaign has only been getting better and better over the last month. The 24-year-old lefty has given Texas five consecutive quality starts. In three of his past four outings he has pitched at least seven innings while allowing one run or fewer. On Tuesday at Oakland, Holland went seven innings and struck out seven while allowing just one run in a 7-2 victory.

          Slumping

Dontrelle Willis, Cincinnati Reds (0-6, 5.04 ERA)

Willis struggled in two starts earlier this month, taking the loss on both occasions. After giving up four runs in seven innings at Wrigley Field, Willis was pounded for eight runs in 3 1-3 innings by the Cubs at home on September 12. Adding injury to insult, the southpaw has been sidelined with back spasms ever since.

Tim Wakefield, Boston Red Sox (7-7, 5.08 ERA)

John Lackey is starting the second game of Sunday’s double-header against the Yankees, and his struggles are well-documented. Wakefield, though, is also slumping. Even when he recorded his 200th win on September 13, the veteran righty gave up five runs in six innings against Toronto. Wakefield has gone six in a row without turning in a quality start, a stretch that dates back to August 8.

          Sunday, September 25

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Sunday’s best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (-180, 8.5)

The Cardinals seemed to cripple themselves when they gave up six runs in the ninth inning in an 8-6 loss to the Mets on Thursday. They promptly lost a full game to Atlanta in the wild card race on Friday by falling 5-1 to the Cubs as the Braves took care of Washington.

Saturday, though, was just what the doctor ordered for St. Louis. Following an Atlanta loss, the Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the ninth to stun Chicago 2-1 and pull back within two games in the WC standings.

With momentum in hand, St. Louis is sending Edwin Jackson to the mound on Sunday afternoon. Jackson allowed five runs in five innings in his last start on Tuesday against the Mets, but that seems to be the aberration rather than the rule. Prior to that outing, Jackson had turned in six consecutive quality starts.

The right-hander is 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA against the Cubs this season.

Chicago, meanwhile, is countering with Randy Wells. The veteran righty owns a 5.09 ERA in 2011 and he has not lasted more than five innings in two straight losses, in which he surrendered five runs both times.

          Pick: Cardinals

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox (-130, 8.5)

Better late than never for the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals are never in playoff contention and this year is no different, but they are at least riding a hot streak into the offseason. Kansas City has won nine of its last 11 games as of Saturday afternoon.

All signs point to the surge continuing on Sunday. For one, starter Luis Mendoza made his first appearance of the season on Tuesday and allowed only one run in seven innings as the Royals hammered Detroit 10-2. Secondly, KC has won four of its last five against Chicago after an 11-1 rout on Friday.

The White Sox, meanwhile, are nothing short of atrocious at home. They have a 33-43 home record, which is second worst in the entire American League ahead of lowly Minnesota.

Sox starter Gavin Floyd has gone four straight outings without delivering a quality start.

          Pick: Royals

              **********************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday......

              13) LSU's Les Miles is this generation's Bobby Bowden; his teams play as well or better on the road than they do at home, he's not afraid to gamble in big spots, and most of all, he just wins and wins-- they've already beaten Oregon (in Dallas) and won at Mississippi State/West Virginia.

              12) In the late 70's/early 80's, USC once had these four defensive backs as starters: Ronnie Lott-Joey Browner-Dennis Smith-Jeff Fisher. All played in the NFL. Could LSU's current DB's be as good as those guys?

              11) How about Oklahoma State? Down 20-3 at the half at Texas A&M, the Cowboys rallied in the second half for a season-making win, shocking the Aggies 30-29 with a huge second half. Tremendous win for OSU.

              10) Who made Clemson's schedule? They just beat Auburn-Florida State, now they go to Virginia Tech next week. Its like an NFL schedule, but it gets a lot softer after the trip to Blacksburg.

              9) Not often a team turns ball over seven times and wins, but East Carolina survived a minus-4 turnover ratio and beat UAB 28-23.

              8) Tremendous goal line stand by Kansas State on messy field in Miami in last minute, as Bill Snyder's Wildcats beat the Hurricanes 28-24. Going to be a while before Miami is a power again. Might be a long while.

              7) Much was made this week how Vanderbilt was 3-0 amd had split their last four games with South Carolina, so they might have a shot at another upset this week. Not so much. Commodores ran 48 plays for a total of 77 yards and got waxed 21-3, even though Stephen Garcia threw four INTs.

              6) Severe ugliness in Mountain West, as UNLV lost 41-10 to Southern Utah, and New Mexico lost to Sam Houston State. Both at home.

              5) Not a lot better in the Big Dozen, as Minnesota lost at home to North Dakota State, and Indiana lost 24-21 to North Texas, a Sun Belt doormat. Hoosiers were down 21-0 at the half.

              4) Kid named Marcus Williams played high school ball in Twin Cities; he scored two defensive TDs for North Dakota State, which brought 10,000+ fans to Minnesota for this game, their second win in last three tries against the Gophers. Pretty soon, Minnesota won't play them anymore.

              3) Syracuse is 3-1, but they've beaten Wake Forest/Toledo in OT, and beat I-AA Rhode Island 21-14. A win is a win, but they're not impressive. The refs screwed Toledo Saturday; the PAT Syracuse kicked with 2:07 left obviously missed, but was called good, even after replay review. Toledo wound up kicking a FG to tie the game, when they should've won 30-29.

              2) Nebraska's win at Wyoming drew 32,614 fans to a stadium that has a listed capacity of 29,200; it is the smallest stadium Nebraska has played in since 1971, but Wyoming borders Nebraska, and many of the fans at this game were wearing red. Cornhuskers visit Wisconsin next week.

              1) USC's 11-game win streak over Arizona State ended when ASU waxed the Trojans 43-22 late Saturday night. Good win for Dennis Erickson, but other than Stanford, the Pac-12 is a muddled mess.
