Louisville is not as bad as looked last night. The announcers did not make a big deal about the flu problem -- they mentioned it once during a lull a few minutes into the 2nd quarter -- but I believe it had it had a big effect. Louisville wouldn't have won, but I believe they would have covered the 14 point spread if they were 100%. As it was, they were a turnover and a missed chip shot field goal away from covering despite the flu. That's why we couldn't pull the trigger either way despite the information.

Orlando as a favorite? What's next? The Disney Little League -150 over the Yankees? The Magic may have finally played a few decent games on the road, but they are still 1-12 SU at home. Would you call a guy who missed 11 out of his last 12 shots a favorite to make the next one? Not me.

Denver continues to be one of the surprises in the NBA as they have won 3 of 4 outright, and are 16-9 overall. Denver is now only ONE WIN shy of matching last year?s entire victory total. Even more shocking is the Nuggets 6-7 record on the road, as this franchise almost went winless on the highway from 3 straight seasons! Of course, the arrival of Carmelo Anthony has had a huge impact on the Nuggets, but Denver is a whole lot more than just the dynamic rookie from Syracuse. Denver has some height to throw at Shaquille O?Neal tonight in Marcus Camby and Nene Hilario, while talented young legs like Anthony and Andre Miller can make the Lakers run by pushing the ball up the floor. The Nuggets are catching the mighty Lakers at the right time as LA has actually dropped 2 games in a row outright, including that national TV loss to the Mavericks which finally snapped their long 27 game home winning streak. More importantly, the Lakers have FAILED to cover 4 consecutive outings. Most likely Kobe Bryant will not be able to play this evening, as he will be in Colorado during the day attending a hearing for his sexual assault trial. Checking the database, DENVER IS 10-2 ATS FOR THE SEASON after playing their prior game on the road (thrilling one point win at Seattle). In addition, Denver is 6-1 ATS so far against the Pacific Division. The Lakers are a dismal 1-6 ATS for the year off consecutive spread losses.

TONIGHT?S COLLEGE BEST BET: Utah is not going to be in a very good mood after they were manhandled on the road in an ugly and physical 65-51 loss at LSU. However, they match up perfectly with a Cal Northridge squad that has major problems on offense. The last time Northridge played on the road (0-3 SU/1-2 ATS) was at San Jose State where they managed to score a grand total of only 49 POINTS. They are in big trouble against the defensive oriented Utes who are surrendering an average of only 52 points per game, as opponents are shooting only 39-percent from the floor. Not only can Utah play defense, which has always been a trademark of Rick Majerus squads, they can also dominate in the paint. So far, 6-10 senior Tim Frost is pulling down 4.6 rebounds per game, while 6-9 Andrew Bogut nabs 10 boards per contest. Frost will eventually catch up to Bogut, as he is rounding into shape following a bout with injury last month. Even though Utah is not a dynamic team on offense, the do have senior leadership in the backcourt with Nick Jacobson, who just happens to be hitting at a sweet 46-PERCENT clip from three-point territory. Utah is an extremely high percentage proposition according to my database, as they are 8-1 ATS SINCE 1997 as a home favorite of 12?-to-15 points. The Utes are also 7-1 ATS at home in December the past 3 seasons.

2-UNIT ESPN TOTAL (Spurs/Sonics OVER 177): Regular clients know that I have used the OVER several times with the run-and-gun Sonics who admit that they are not a great defensive team, and need to push the ball. That strategy helps offset the fact that they have very few ?name? players. In fact, Seattle?s one star, Ray Allen, remains on the injured list. Obviously, tonight?s posted total is extremely low due to the fact the defensive oriented Spurs are involved. San Antonio have held their last 5 opponents to LESS than 80 points. Nobody has scored 100 against the Spurs in the past month. Tim Duncan and company are allowing an average of just 83 points per game, which just happens to be #1 in the entire league. However, I want to alert you to a game Seattle played on 12/12 against the Detroit Pistons, who were permitting the second fewest points in the NBA. On that night, Seattle?s uptempo attack was able to put a grand total of 93 points on the scoreboard. Not only can the Sonics put points on the board, they also give up a ton with their suspect defense. The Sonics are coming off a 99-98 home loss where they allowed Denver to shoot 48-pecent from the field! Yes, I am the first to admit that the Spurs are a great ?under? team as they have played below the total at an 18-7 clip for the season, including 8 of the most recent 10 outings. However, my database tells me the SPURS ARE 23-10 OVER SINCE 1996 after an extremely low scoring game with a combined 160-or-LESS points scored! In addition, Seattle is an excellent 10-2 OVER versus superb defensive teams that permit opponents to shoot less that 41.5% from the field (the Spurs are allowing 39-percent). Bingo!
