Saturday's betting tips: Georgia an 'over' machine

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: The Over is 8-1 in Georgia’s last nine games.

NCAAF: San Diego State is 7-1 ATS in its last eight September games.

MLB: The Over is 7-3-1 in Pittsburgh pitcher Brad Lincoln’s last 11 starts.

CFL: The Under is 7-0 in the B.C. Lions’ last seven games.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: Western Michigan is 2-10-1 in its last 13 games as a road dog.

NCAAF: Kansas State is 7-20 ATS in its last 27 non-conference games.

MLB: The Indians are 3-13 in Mitch Talbot’s last 16 home starts.

CFL: Toronto is 1-7 ATS in its last eight home games.

    Key stat

47 – That’s how many consecutive saves Detroit’s Jose Valverde had converted this season heading into Friday night’s action. His overall streak is 49, third-longest in history behind Eric Gagne (84) and Tom Gordon (54). In those 47 opportunities, Valverde has pitched 47 innings and allowed three runs (0.57 ERA).

    Injury not to be overlooked

Nebraska defensive tackle Jared Crick, a second-team All-American in 2010, is questionable for Saturday’s game at Wyoming after getting “dinged” late in last week’s win over Washington. He has 14 tackles, including three for loss and a sack, in the Cornhuskers’ first three games. However, No. 9 Nebraska will welcome back corner Alfonzo Dennard, who missed the first three games with a quad injury. Dennard earned second-team All-Big 12 honors last year. Nebraska is laying 21 points to the Cowboys.

    Game of the day

No. 6 Oklahoma State Cowboys at No. 8 Texas A&M Aggies (-4, 68)

    Notable quotable

"I am right on par with the team, and so I need to see how the quad feels." – Rams RB Steven Jackson on whether he’ll play Sunday at home against the Ravens, who are favored by 4. It will be a gametime decision. Without Jackson in Week 2, St. Louis lost 28-16 at the Giants.

    Notes and tips

No. 11 Virginia Tech, favored by 20.5 points at Marshall on Saturday, won’t have career receptions leader Jarrett Boykin due to a hamstring injury. Boykin has 133 career catches and is second on the team this year with 10 receptions for 93 yards and a TD. Boykin also is 57 yards shy of becoming the school’s alltime leader in receiving yards.

The Detroit Lions are the nation’s darlings right now, but 0-2 Minnesota is a dangerous 3.5-point underdog. The Vikings get star defensive tackle Kevin Williams back from his two-game suspension in the StarCaps case. Williams said the time off helped his plantar fasciitis. Coach Leslie Frazier described Williams as an impact player and “potential Hall of Famer.” It also should be noted that the Lions haven’t won in Minnesota since 1997.

No. 12 Arkansas, an 11-point underdog at No. 2 Alabama on Saturday, will be without senior defensive end Jake Bequette (hamstring). He’s one of the Razorbacks’ most productive and experienced players. Bequette will be replaced by sophomore Chris Smith, who has 2.5 tackles for loss this year.

Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 13 odds and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      B.C. Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-1.5, 50)

These two teams are making everyone forget their terrible starts now that they are back in the thick of things in the West Division. Don’t count them out for the playoff race since both squads will play six of their last seven games against divisional rivals.

The Lions have won four in a row while the Riders are on a three-game winning streak. The Lions currently lead the CFL allowing only 22.2 points per game, but their recent strong stretch has brought that average down. B.C. has allowed just 42 points over the last four games.

Ken Miller's return at the helm of the Riders has been a turning point for the entire team and especially for QB Darian Durant. He has eight TD passes in his last three games and now averages better than nine yards per pass attempt.

This should be a close one but since it is played in Regina, we have to go with the Riders.

      Pick: Regina

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts (+3.5, 48.5)

After picking up a key win in Montreal, the Blue Bombers are now in a great position to widen the gap at the top of the East Division against the weakest link of the CFL, the Toronto Argonauts.

While Buck Pierce and his troops will work in the deadly silence of Rogers Stadium, the second-place Montreal Alouettes will have much more adversity at Commonwealth Stadium.

Pierce didn’t take the usual abuse last week and should be in top shape to keep the Bombers attack rolling against a Toronto defense that isn't as stingy as it has been in the recent years. Meanwhile, the Argos' offense isn't scaring anyone - even with Steven Jyles behind center.

That said, the danger for Winnipeg is to have a letdown after a very emotional win against the Alouettes while playing on a short week. But how can the Bombers flop after last year's terrible campaign now that they have a chance to run away with first place in the East?

      Pick: Winnipeg

Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger Cats (Pick’em, 54.5)

With the Stampeders and Tiger-Cats squaring off in Moncton, New Brunswick, this could be the toughest game on the board for bettors. Being the second Touchdown Atlantic celebration, there will be lots of distractions around.

However, Calgary is fighting for first place in the West and must feel a sense of urgency. A bye week to start the playoffs will be a strong motivating factor. Also keep in mind that neither team will have much of a home advantage even if the Tiger-Cats are listed as the home team. The Stampeders are unbeaten in five road games this season and should keep that streak going.

      Pick: Calgary

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        STREAKING

Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals (14-8, 3.47 ERA)

Lohse has given up five earned runs over his last four starts (3-0) and is one win away from matching his career high in wins, set in 2008. Against the Phillies last time out, Lohse tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out five and walking one. He has a fine WHIP of 1.18.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (24-5, 2.29 ERA)

The likely AL Cy Young winner -- and possible MVP winner -- has won 12 straight starts. He’s given up one or zero runs in three of his past four starts, hurling eight shutout innings against Oakland last time out. The 28-year-old fireballer leads the majors with 244 strikeouts.

        SLUMPING

John Danks, Chicago White Sox (7-12, 4.36 ERA)

Danks has been lit up for 22 earned runs over his last four starts, and he’s given up at least 10 hits in each of his last two. He recovered well from an 0-8 start, but is now stumbling to the finish line. Batters are hitting .276 against him.

A.J. Burnett, New York Yankees (10-11, 5.28 ERA)

Burnett lasted just four innings against the lowly Twins last time out, allowing two homers and four earned runs on nine hits. He hasn’t gone more than six innings since July 29, and has given up at least four earned runs in four of his last six starts.

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (145, 8)

The Nationals are finishing 2011 on a high note, having won 10 of 13 despite Friday's loss.

And starter Chien-Ming Wang is one of the better comeback stories of the year. He returned to the big leagues July 29, exactly two years after a right shoulder operation. He had not been on a major-league mound since July 4, 2009, when he was with the Yankees.

Wang’s most recent outing was his longest – 6 2/3 innings against the Marlins. He got 16 groundball outs while allowing three runs.

“Each time he’s toed that rubber, he’s gotten a little better," Nationals outfielder Jonny Gomes said. "It’s turning into a pretty good success story for him.”

The Braves, meanwhile, are struggling to hold onto the wild card. They’ve lost Brandon Beachy’s last four starts. He’s been touched for eight earned runs and six walks in his last two starts, covering 9 2/3 innings.

        Pick: Nationals

Colorado Rockies at Houston Astros (-110, 9)

Astros starter J.A. Happ has a miserable 6-15 record and an equally bad 5.48 ERA. But he seems to be putting things together as the season winds down.

In Happ’s last two starts, he’s given up three earned runs over 12 innings while fanning 13. And his home ERA (4.54) is more than two runs better than his road ERA (6.62).

The Rockies’ Jason Hammel gets the start in place of the struggling Esmil Rogers. He has a weak strikeout-to-walk ration of 91:67, and batters are hitting .275 against him.

Injury-ravaged Colorado went 0-7 on its recent homestand, getting outscored 49-19.

        Pick: Astros

                Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Some trends to think about with Week 3 of the NFL approaching

-- Minnesota covered once in last eight games as a divisional dog.

-- Jacksonville is 3-8 vs spread in last 11 games against the NFC.

-- Eagles covered three of last 12 divisional home games.

-- Jets covered six of last seven as a road favorite.

-- Tampa Bay is 3-13-1 vs spread in last 17 home games.

-- Seahawks are 8-4 vs spread in their last twelve home games.

                *****************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

                13) Did you know three of the 10 richest people in America (according to Forbes magazine) are affiliated with Wal-Mart? I had no idea.

                12) Tampa Bay unveiled prize prospect Matt Moore this week, and you wonder if their reluctance to promote the young lefty sooner might cost them a playoff spot. Kid struck out 11 in five scoreless IP, getting 18 misses on 45 Bronx swings. Now, if only he could hit…….

                11) What do Bills’ QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and comedian Carrot Top have in common? They’re both sons of rocket scientists. Go figure. Fitzpatrick proposed to his wife at a McDonald’s, and she still said yes.

                10) Speaking of Carrot Top, he’s a guest star on the season debut of CSI this week. Man is a comic genius. Seriously. He is.

                9) We hear so many horror stories about athletes and money, its good to hear a success story. Remember Junior Bridgeman, who played college ball at Louisville and scored over 11,000 points as a sharpshooting guard with the Bucks? Turns out the guy now owns 165 Wendy’s restaurants. How rich is HE? There's a guy who made the most of opportunity.

                8) Not sure why, but Vin Scully was talking about Rennie Stennett’s 7-hit game the other night, the only one in baseball history; turns out that Stennett’s first hit that night was against Cubs’ ace Rick Reuschel; his 7th hit was against Reuschel’s brother Paul. They pinch-ran for Stennett after his 7th hit; the pinch-runner? Former Mets manager Willie Randolph.

                7) East Carolina has applied for membership into the Big East; not sure why they haven’t added Memphis too, unless the Big 12 wants Tigers and all their Fed Ex advertising money.

                6) Not sure what station this is on, but saw a show other night, hosted by Tony Siragusa, where they do over part of a guy’s house into a man cave for him. It was pretty cool how they did it; it’s a lot like Tanked, only without aquariums. Show is fittingly titled Man Caves. Very original.

                5) Mets’ Willie Harris has two homers this season (in 218 AB) that came 171 days apart, about as far apart as they could be and still happen in the same season, seeing as a season is roughly 181 days long.

                4) Part of the reason the Brewers are going to be a playoff team this year is their starting pitchers stayed very healthy. Milwaukee used only six starting pitchers all season and they were 4-3 in starts made by #6 starter Estrada, who did pretty well (3.70 RA in seven starts).

                3) They’re selling some goofy thing on latenight TV called Thundershirts, which supposedly calm your dog down during a thunderstorm. It is suggested during the commercial that some people give their dogs anti-depressants to get them through storms. Wow. Who knew?

                2) Two years ago, Kenley Janzen was a minor league catcher; this month, he is a dominating relief pitcher for the Dodgers, having gotten 24 of his last 31 outs via the strikeout. He has closer written all over him.

                1) Hard to believe, but NBA claims they have no Plan B for next year’s draft, should there be no NBA season this year. Any change in normal procedure would have to be approved by the NBAPA, so that would just muddle things even further. This is a billion dollar industry that is really clueless right now.
