Tuesday’s betting tips: Wakefield goes for 200 again

    Who’s hot

MLB: The Cleveland Indians are 9-2 in Justin Masterson’s last 11 trips to the hill.

MLB: The over is 7-1-1 in Washington’s last nine overall.

    Who’s not

MLB: San Diego was 1-10 in its last 11 road games heading into Monday night’s action.

MLB: Florida is 1-8 in its last nine games against Atlanta.

    Key stat

$21 million – The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension with starting pitcher Chris Carpenter, who has bounced back from a 1-7 beginning to the season to even his record at 9-9. Carpenter climbs the hill Tuesday in Pittsburgh with his Cards set around -175.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday after struggling with a stiff back over the weekend. Gonzalez said his back stiffened up Saturday, and it prevented him from playing in Sunday's series finale against the visiting Cincinnati Reds. The 25-year-old is hitting .299 for the season with 25 homers, 89 RBIs and 19 steals in 469 at-bats.

    Game of the day

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox (+170, 7)

    Notable quotable

"Ibrahimovic is one of the world's best players, he's Milan's most important player. It's always better to play against the whole team so it's a shame he couldn't come. He's a player on another level. I'm happy for everything he brought for us." – Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola on AC Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was injured in Monday’s training session and won’t play when the two teams clash Tuesday. Ibrahimovic left Barcelona for following a falling out with Guardiola. Barcelona is a big -435 favorite with the draw at +450 and a Milan victory at a whopping +950.

    Notes and tips

This is just getting awkward for Tim Wakefield as he tries to pick up his 200th career win. The veteran knuckleballer makes his eighth try at the milestone win Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, but has allowed at least four runs in each of his last four starts. The BoSox are set around -165 at home to Toronto.

UEFA Champions League group stage action kicks off Tuesday with a couple of interesting matches on the schedule. Bayer Leverkusen veteran midfielder Michael Ballack will face off against his former club Chelsea. "We have a bit of international experience thanks to the Europa League [last season, reaching the round of 16], but of course it's completely different to be playing in the Champions League," said the 34-year-old. "I know from experience that it's a different level. Yet in the opening match in London, where we can go without any pressure, we may spring a surprise." Chelsea is pegged as a -250 favorite with the draw at +315 and a Bayer Leverkusen win at +630.

Slugger Adrian Beltre is on an absolute tear after coming off the disabled list on Sept. 1. He drove in seven runs over the weekend as Texas took two out of three from the Athletics and is now hitting .395 with 12 RBIs since coming off the shelf (he also had a 16-game hitting streak before reinjuring his hamstring). The Rangers are just 11-12 in their last 23 games, but are still clinging to the AL West lead as the Angels are charging.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Brady-to-Welker 99-yard pass last night was 13th in NFL history.

-- Five NFL games this week saw both QBs throw for 300+ yards, the first time thats ever happened in one week.

-- Brady had a string snapped of 358 passes without an interception.

-- Roger Federer has now earned $61.1M playing tennis.

-- Mets used 26 players in their 11-inning loss Sunday night, most guys they've ever used in one game.

-- School started last week; NHL training camps open this week.

      ***********************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Hey the woeful Colts have three primetime games in Weeks 3-7; network executives have to be loving that. That’s nine hours of watching Jim Caldwell staring blankly into space watching Kerry Collins play QB. Not exactly the duty he signed up for.

      12) Maybe Indy fans will drink more, which will help vendors at Lucas Oil Stadium, since a Game Day beer in Indy is the most expensive beer in the NFL. Beer at Swamp Stadium in New Jersey is second. Who has the cheapest beer? Houston-Atlanta-Cleveland.

      11) If the Red Sox continue on their monumental late season collapse, at what point does Carl Crawford’s complete no-show this year become an issue? Guys who runs like that makes $20M a year and has an on-base percentage under .300? Time for him to wake up and earn his money.

      10) Speaking of Boston and bad contracts, they’re stuck with John Lackey for the next three years, for a total of $46M. How would you like to be the guy who negotiated that deal for the Red Sox?

      9) Have to admit; I’ve never seen Brad Pitt in a movie (that I know of), and I’ve got no plans to start anytime soon. I'll talk (vent) a little bit on the Moneyball movie next week.

      8) I had forgotten that Kerry Wood once struck out 20 guys in a game, and in only his fifth major league start.

      7) How bad is Memphis in football? They were losing 44-3 at Arkansas State Saturday (not Razorbacks, Arkansas State in Jonesboro, a freakin’ Sun Belt team), and the Red Hawks tried (and made) a 57-yard FG in the last minute. Is the ASU coach angling for the Memphis job down the road, as in like, November? They must recruit against each other.

      6) Worlds colliding: this week on Storage Wars, poker star Phil Hellmuth makes a guest appearance. I’m guessing he could outbid obnoxious Dave Hester for a locker.

      5) Late Sunday night, the Mets had winning run on second base in a tie game with two out and Lucas Duda up; Cubs walked Duda intentionally to pitch to David Wright; I damn near fell off the couch. They got him out, too. Wondering if the Mets move Wright for pitching help this winter.

      4) With Phillies visiting Houston this week, seems like a good time to remind Astro fans that their team is 5-20 this year in games started by former Phillie JA Happ. Nice trade.

      3) Falcon QB Matt Ryan was sacked five times in Chicago Sunday; he was sacked 23 times all of last season.

      2) Someone on ESPN.com pointed out that when an NFL team leads by 14 points with 14:50 left to play, their expected win percentage is 96%. Not as many big comebacks as you’d think in pro football; we just remember those games better.

      1) Former Bronx manager/current MLB executive Joe Torre didn’t let the Mets wear NYPD and NYFD hats during their game Sunday night, to protect the licensing rights of MLB’s partners; this is an epic fail on MLB’s part, even though they’re right, if you follow the letter of the law.

MLB also wouldn’t let Nationals wear Navy SEALS hats during a game last month. I know they have to draw the line somewhere, but guessing they’d draw it on the correct side of police-fire-military personnel, I was wrong. Go figure.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (12-10, 4.35 ERA)

We realize Justin Verlander and Ian Kennedy are climbing the hill Tuesday, but to be totally honest, we’re getting a little sick of talking about those guys – you know what they do. Instead, check out Gavin Floyd, who is 3-0 with a 3.61 ERA in his last six trips to the hill. He gave up just a single earned run over 5 2/3 innings to pace the Pale Hose to an 8-1 win over Cleveland last week.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (14-7, 2.60 ERA)

Those shoulder concerns that kept Hamels out of the rotation for a few starts last month seem to be behind him. He is 1-0 over his last three starts, boasting a 2.45 ERA while striking out 16 batters over 21 innings. Hamels hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a starts since mid-July. The Phillies have a shot at clinching the division Monday, so beware the possible champagne hangover.

              Slumping

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (10-11, 4.74 ERA)

Dempster was a rock in the Cubs’ rotation for much of the year, but even he’s faltering down the stretch of another lost season for Chicago. He hasn’t won a game since Aug. 11 even though he gave up more than three runs just once over those five starts. The Canadian gave up 10 hits in six innings during a no-decision against the Reds last week.

Brandon Morrow, Toronto Blue Jays (9-10, 5.12 ERA)

Morrow was pasted for eight runs and two dingers in 4 1/3 innings of work in last week’s loss 11-10 win over Boston, marking the third time he has allowed at least five earned runs over his last four starts. Some are speculating he’s tiring down the stretch, but he’s shooting those notions down.

“I feel good, I thought there was good life on my pitches,” he told reporters of his last start. “I watched every single pitch and I liked the pitch on six of the eight hits. I thought for the most part they were good pitches.”

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at Milwaukee Brewers (-225, 8.5)

Now that the Brewers put an end to a five-game losing streak which cut into their lead in the NL Central, the road to the playoffs looks a little more inviting.

The Brewers open a two-game set against the Rockies Tuesday before playing Cincinnati, the Cubs, Florida and Pittsburgh – all sub-.500 teams.

“It’s not going to get more difficult, but regardless of who we’re playing, everyone is going to want to compete and play us tough,” Ryan Braun told the Brewers’ official website. “Whether you’re competing to try to get to the postseason or to ruin somebody else’s chances, it’s kind of a fun time of year for all the teams. We certainly expect everyone to give us their best effort.”

The Rockies should have their hands full with Zack Greinke, who is 10-0 with a 2.96 ERA at Miller Park and has allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his last 10 overall.

At this price, we'll look to the under.

                Pick: Under

Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals (-135, 9)

The Kansas City Royals know a thing or two about what life in the basement is like. They’ve finished in last place in the AL Central in seven of the last eight seasons.

But right now, the Twins are bringing up the rear and will need to take care of business against the Royals to avoid a last place finish. On Tuesday the Twins will play the first of five games against Kansas City before the end of the regular season.

Minnesota has lost eight of its last nine and is dealing with a number of injuries right now.

“Some young kids are learning on the job,” manager Ron Gardenhire told the Twins’ official website. “They have to figure out a way to get these things done themselves along with some of the veterans we have in there.”

The Twins have won seven of their last eight against the Royals, including their last four in K.C.

                Pick: Twins

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

                  HOT TEAM: Detroit Tigers

                  THIS SEASON: 84-62
                  LAST WEEK: 6-0

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the White Sox for three, at the Athletics for four.

THE SKINNY: Perhaps the least respected team in playoff contention, consider this: The ho-hum Cleveland Indians thought so much of their chances to catch the Tigers in the AL Central, they went out and picked up Jim Thome for the stretch drive. Two weeks later? The Tigers are surging, they’ve beaten the Indians six straight times, and this so-called race is over.

The Tigers have the best pitcher in the AL -- Justin Verlander and his 22 wins -- a closer, Jose Valverde, with 43 saves, and there’s not a postseason team around that wants to face Miguel Cabrera (.329 average, 25 home runs, 96 RBIs, 97 runs through Sunday). The Tigers appear on a mission to finish September strong, and figure to give the league’s chalk playoff teams -- the Yankees and Red Sox -- a run for their money in October.

                  COLD TEAM: Boston Red Sox

                  THIS SEASON: 85-61
                  LAST WEEK: 1-6

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Blue Jays for two, home to the Rays for four.

THE SKINNY: With the kind of leadership and experience sitting in the Boston clubhouse these days, it is surprising to see this type of slide as most postseason teams are simply taking September to fine-tune things.

And let’s face it, as close as Tampa Bay is in the wild-card race, 3.5 games out through Sunday, it’s hard to imagine the Red Sox not making the tournament. That said, they are losing value at a concerning clip.

Maybe a healthy homestand and a day off on Monday will help right the ship, but as for now, all of Red Sox Nation has to be in worry mode. The Red Sox mounted just 12 runs in four games vs. the Rays to end the week, and will take a 2-9 September record into Tuesday’s series opener with Toronto.

                  OVER TEAM: Washington Nationals

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 71-67-6
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 5-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Mets for four, home to the Marlins for three.

THE SKINNY: The Nationals have gone all-out to make the .500 mark this season, and while they probably won’t get there, they have become a nice, little over team along the way.

Headed into Monday’s action, Washington games had reached double digits in runs six times in September, and the last two weekend games vs. Houston totaled 22 runs.

Get it while the getting’s good in Washington, though. While the schedule is soft, and ripe for overs this week, next week will be a different animal. That’s because Philadelphia and Atlanta are on the docket, so watch out. That might be the end of this little run. But you still have some time to enjoy it.

                  UNDER TEAM: Pittsburgh Pirates

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 71-71-4
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 2-4

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Cardinals for three, at the Dodgers for four.

THE SKINNY: The Pirates have slowly erased their great start, and with losses in bunches, they won’t even have much optimism at September’s end to carry over to spring training. But that’s not your problem. Coinciding with a flat-out awful stretch of baseball the last six weeks, has been a team that has cashed in an under or two along the way.

Headed into Monday’s series opener with St. Louis, the Pirates had scored three runs or less six times in September. Pittsburgh scored just five runs total in a three-game set with Florida over the weekend, and somehow didn’t get swept.

But there’s no off day for the Pirates until Sept. 22, and by the time they get there, they will have played 13 consecutive games. That should make for some tired hitters, and some more unders.

NFL odds: Week 2 opening line report

NFL Week 2 is the most interesting week for oddsmaking and handicapping.

We’ve finally seen games that count, but they comprise such a small sample.

Are the Chiefs that bad? Are the Ravens that good?

Where was the Falcons’ explosiveness? Did Cam Newton prove something with 422 passing yards?

How bettors and oddsmakers answer dozens of questions posed by Week 1 will be critical in Week 2.

“Week 2 is often the best of the season for us, because we see such extreme shifts based on extreme performances,” Las Vegas handicapper Dave Malinksky told ***********. “And this season is no exception, with the oddsmakers having to alter their thinking on so many teams, trying to keep the public money balanced as folks look for those emerging “Play On” and “Play Against” teams.

“Remember that the rule of thumb for the betting public tends to be, ‘Accept Week 1 as gospel’ rather than aberrations.”

Malinsky believes oddsmakers downgraded Atlanta and Kansas City too much, noting the Chiefs did not go hard in the preseason and that may have played a role in Buffalo blowing them out. He thinks the Colts might not have been downgraded enough.

“Meanwhile, the Lions have quickly become darlings, which is pushing this week’s line too far,” Malinsky said, referring to Detroit laying a touchdown or more at home against K.C. “And [oddsmakers] will have to be careful about giving the Texans too much credit for KO’ing a Colts team that did not put up much of a fight.”

Pete Korner, founder of The Sports Club oddsmaking service, told *********** his team faced difficult decisions for Week 2 “because the performances in Week 1 didn’t match the quality of the teams…More data means you can tell whether one game was a fluke or the start of something.”

For example, Atlanta looked horrible in losing 30-12 at Chicago.

“We sent out Atlanta -1 [vs. Philly] and now it’s Philly favored from 1 to 2.5,” Korner said, acknowledging it was a bad line. “It’s a very tough game between two very good teams, but Atlanta showed so poorly. I think Atlanta comes through big time. I would not be surprised if it comes back to a pick ‘em.”

Cleveland-Indy was another hard line to set. The Sports Club suggested clients open it at Browns -2.

“It just looks fluky,” Korner said, noting each team’s pedigree and recent history. “But I said, ‘If I’m going to be wrong, I’m not going to be wrong on the Indy side, because they had an awful preseason, awful first game. I’ll take my chances if it gets bet over to Indy.”

Offshores agreed. They opened it at Cleveland -3, and it’s been bet down only to 2.5.

The Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook is a case study in Week 1’s impact, because the Hilton releases NFL lines a week ahead of time. Week 2 lines went up a week ago.

The Redskins were laying 2.5 against Arizona a week ago but now are laying 4.5. That’s a direct result of how they looked in their 28-14 handling of the Giants.

“Rex Grossman looked very comfortable, and they played with a lot of confidence, energy and enthusiasm,” SuperBook manager Jay Kornegay told ***********. “The key is how good Grossman looked. Of course, he can change colors at any times.”

The Jets were laying 8.5 against Jacksonville a week ago. Now they’re laying 10. And the Jets didn’t have an impressive debut.

“They were very fortunate” to beat the Cowboys,” Kornegay said. “It’s just that the popularity of the Jets is a little stronger than usual. And we don’t expect the Jets to look that bad again.”

In general, Kornegay said, he tries to make slight adjustments rather than knee-jerk reactions.

Biggest spreads of the week: Green Bay at Carolina (10.5, 46), Seattle at Pittsburgh (-13, 38.5)

Korner listed the Packers as 13-point favorites despite Newton’s heroics. Books opened lower, but Korner believes that will rise.

“Newton’s going to be facing a far different defense, and I don’t want to be stuck with the responsibility of giving out too short a number on Green Bay – they can score on anyone,” Korner said. “We’re telling [sportsbooks], even if we’re not right, stay higher. Make everyone bet Carolina. Because gameday it will all be on Green Bay.”

No one is selling the Steelers after one bad outing. All power rankings still have them near the top.

“We know Seattle is not going to be a force, and Pittsburgh is going to bounce back, but how much?” Korner said.

If that spread hits 14, however, underdog players will be tempted.

Smallest spread of the week: Dallas at San Francisco (3, 42)

This is one of a number of small spreads, including the Cleveland-Indy and Philly-Atlanta games discussed earlier.

Korner actually released Dallas-San Fran as a pick 'em.

"The Cowboys just blew Sunday night's game and San Francisco looked very good, but we know there is a difference in talent and Dallas probably should be favored," Korner said. "But because of [Week 1] we shaded it down."

Still, most books opened the Niners as slight favorites.

Biggest total of the week: San Diego at New England (-7, 51)

There are no doubts about either offense, plus the Chargers just lost top defensive end Luis Castillo to a broken tibia.

Malinsky expects this total to rise. And he offered that opinion before New England ripped Miami for 500-plus passing yards in a 38-24 win.

“They have already been willing to go to 50 on the Philadelphia-Atlanta matchup,” he said. “That would tell us that a 52 might even be in play for this one.”

NFL Week 1 injury report: Bradford, S-Jax, Tolbert

                          St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams received mixed news on the injury front Monday, with running back Steven Jackson expected to sit out next week and wide receiver Danny Amendola expected to return much earlier than expected.

Jackson suffered a right quadriceps strain early in Sunday's 31-13 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said Jackson, who ran for a 47-yard touchdown on their first play from scrimmage, probably will not play in Monday's game against the New York Giants.

Cadillac Williams will start in Jackson's place. He had 91 yards rushing and 49 yards receiving Sunday.

Quarterback Sam Bradford was listed as day-to-day by Spagnuolo with a contusion or bruise on his right finger.

Amendola, who suffered a dislocated left elbow and was feared possibly lost for the season, will not have to undergo surgery, Spagnuolo said. That could mean Amendola, the team's leading receiver with 85 catches last season, could be back sometime next month.

Right tackle Jason Smith, the second overall pick in the 2009 draft, also is listed as day-to-day with a sprained ankle.

The news was not as good for cornerback Ron Bartell, who could miss the rest of the season with a neck injury.

                          San Diego Chargers

San Diego Chargers running back Mike Tolbert will undergo an MRI on Monday after suffering a leg injury in Sunday's win over Minnesota.

Tolbert was the star of the show in the 24-17 triumph, rushing for a touchdown and catching two passes for scores. He appeared fine after the game, but the Chargers are taking no chances. Tolbert finished with 12 rushes for 35 yards and nine catches for 58 yards.

Meanwhile, kicker Nate Kaeding is done for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee.

Kaeding was hurt while trying to make a tackle on Percy Harvin's 103-yard opening kickoff return Sunday. The Chargers will have tryouts to find a replacement. Punter Mike Scifres assumed all kicking duties Sunday.

Kaeding has been among the league's best kickers since he was drafted by the Chargers in 2004. He has converted 86.5 percent (173-for-200) of his field goal attempts in his seven seasons.

                          Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City chiefs safety Eric Berry has been lost for the season with a torn ACL.Berry was injured early in Sunday's 41-7 home loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The No. 5 overall pick in the 2010 draft, Berry had a strong rookie season with the Chiefs, registering 92 tackles, four interceptions and two sacks.

                          Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason has been lost for the season with a torn Achilles' tendon.

Beason, who had never missed a game in his first four seasons, was injured in the second half of Sunday's loss at Arizona. He did not practice or play in the preseason and underwent a minor surgical procedure on his Achilles' tendon on Aug. 23.

A first-round draft pick in 2007, Beason has amassed at least 120 tackles in each of his four seasons.

                          New York Giants

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks underwent further evaluation on his ailing knee Monday.

X-rays on Nicks came back negative, and a team source told the Newark Star-Ledger that the wideout is dealing with a "bone bruise at worst." Nicks had a huge opening game with seven receptions for 122 yards in Sunday's 28-14 loss at Washington.

He had a breakout season in 2010, hauling in 79 catches for 1,052 yards and 11 touchdowns.

                          Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills cornerback Terrence McGee will be sidelined for a few weeks due to a hamstring injury suffering in Sunday's 41-7 romp at Kansas City.

McGee has been plagued by injuries the past two seasons. A fourth-round draft pick in 2003, he has 17 career interceptions. Rookie Aaron Williams played in place of McGee on Sunday and will likely start against Oakland on Sunday.

                          Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon is likely done for the season due to a torn triceps. Colon's agent, Joe Linta, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that his client will undergo surgery Tuesday morning.

Colon missed the entire 2010 season after suffering an Achilles' tendon injury the previous summer. The Steelers signed him to a five-year contract worth $29 million in July.
