College football odds: Week 2 opening line report

Week 1 of the college football season is nearly in the books, but people are still mourning in Eugene and Athens while others in Boise are still partying.

Time to take a look at next week's betting board. Every week during the college football season, we analyze how the pros set the lines.

      Oklahoma State (-13) vs. Arizona

Two teams that went relatively untested vs. cupcakes at home battle on Thursday. But Arizona has never been one to shy away from scheduling up -- on the road -- and this is a perfect example.

Oklahoma State -- surprise, surprise -- has plenty of firepower and showed it vs. Louisiana Lafayette. Brandon Weeden threw for 390 yards and three scores, and Quinn Sharp nailed four field goals in a 61-34 win. And it’s that kind of firepower that has the important guys in Las Vegas leaning toward the Cowboys.

“Oklahoma State can put a lot of points on the board, but they can give up a few, too. That’s their game, and it works for them,” John Avello of the Wynn Hotel Sportsbook told ***********. “You have to go close to two touchdowns. OSU is at home, and with Arizona, I expect an average year.”

      Arizona State (-5) vs. Missouri

A 17-6 win over Miami, Ohio at home isn’t exactly the way Missouri wanted to tune up for this lengthy road trip. The Tigers were sloppy and only gained 21 more yards than the RedHawks did.

So, there’s not a lot of confidence from the pros, as Missouri packs its bags for Tempe. Especially after the Sun Devils danced all over UC Davis, 48-14.

“Arizona State looked good in the opener, went 6-6 last year, and has everyone coming back,” Avello said. “I still expect Missouri to have a big season, and they usually play well in this type of a game. But they have to show it first.”

      Wisconsin (-16) vs. Oregon State

It was a tough week for the Beaver State. But you can forgive Oregon for losing to LSU, 40-27. For Oregon State, a 29-28 loser to Sacramento State? Different story.

Listen, the Beavers have plenty of time to turn it around. It’s not like they were in the national title hunt, and needed to stay undefeated. And that’s a good thing, because a trip to Wisconsin is not what the doctor ordered. As such, the books have no choice but to inflate the Badgers.

“But you have to be careful,” Avello said. “Riley usually gets a bunch out of his team, and Oregon State has a way of playing their best ball on the road. So I went with 16, and then I’ll see where the players push me on this one.”

      Mississippi State (-1) at Auburn

The Tigers pulled off a great escape vs. Utah State, 42-38, but don’t let it fool you. Auburn has serious issues on defense, and it’s only going to get tougher. On the other hand, Mississippi State couldn’t have done much more vs. Memphis, whipping the Tigers, 59-14.

So with two programs seemingly headed in different directions, the line is low, and it’s up to the midweek sharp players to see where it goes.

“If you want to look at history, Auburn plays well in SEC openers, but this will be tough,” Avello said. “Memphis was not a good indication, it wasn’t close. But Mississippi State was 9-4 last year, and they have a bunch coming back on defense.”

      Alabama (-11) at Penn State

A few weeks from now, it’ll probably be clear that this is not a vintage Penn State team. Quarterback play is iffy, the offensive line is in flux, Joe Paterno’s coaching from the press box, and the schedule is a bear.

The Nittany Lions whacked Indiana State, 41-7, but the party’s over. The Crimson Tide will probably be the fastest, fiercest defense Paterno’s crew sees all year.

“Alabama has to be a heavy favorite,” Avello said. “They looked good on paper, they looked good on the field. Playing at Penn State is never an easy task. But Alabama looks too good.”

      Oregon (-21.5) vs. Nevada

It figured to be a difficult opener for new-look Nevada anyway, without departed quarterback Colin Kaepernick. But now that the Ducks are 0-1 and have lost two in a row? Look out.

Oregon showed it can be had on defense, vs. LSU, so that might help the Wolf Pack. But, in the end, the speed and athleticism that the Ducks still have, plus the bounceback factor, made this a large one.

“The quarterback certainly made a difference, and that will be a very big loss for Nevada,” Avello said. “But the team is well coached and you have to beware. That said, they’re going to catch a team that’s going to be a little mad. And Oregon is just so tough at home anyway.”

      South Carolina (-1.5) at Georgia

The talent, depth, and standings all say that South Carolina is the team to beat. The Gamecocks rallied to defeat East Carolina, 56-37, and showed the nation that maybe, just maybe, all the hype surrounding Steve Spurrier’s squad is deserved.

But home teams in the SEC always attract some value, and now it’s abundantly clear that the Bulldogs are playing for coach Mark Richt’s future, as well.

“South Carolina woke up in the second half vs. East Carolina,” Avello said. “But Georgia is a much-improved team, it may just take a while for you to see that. They just ran into a great Boise State team. I still expect them to be tough here.”

      Texas (-5) vs. BYU

Hard to believe the Longhorns are under the radar. Unranked to begin, Texas hammered Rice, 34-9, and will welcome BYU to its second straight road game.

The Cougars, who seem comfortable as independents, rallied to dodge Ole Miss, 14-13, but the Longhorns are not the Rebels. There’s a ways to go in Austin, clearly, but Texas isn’t about to be an underdog at home just yet.

“BYU was lucky to get that win vs. Ole Miss, but they did play well on defense,” Avello said. “Texas is coming off a good outing, but they were supposed to. We’ll see how they play against a tougher opponent here.”

      Southern Cal (-6.5) vs. Utah

As the Big Ten season rolls on -- and Minnesota struggles, as expected -- USC’s 19-17 escape vs. the Gophers will probably look less impressive. But as for now, it’s all the books have to go on. So, advantage USC.

And the Utes might find the sledding tough in the Pac-12 anyway, especially after a ho-hum win over Montana State, 27-10.

“Minnesota played USC so tough. I think Utah is OK, but it’s hard to say, so this one was tough,” Avello said. “Utah usually plays well on the road, so I can’t lay too much. USC is going to be a good team soon, just not this year.”

      Notre Dame (-1.5) at Michigan

It looked like this patented, early-season matchup might have a little juice to it when the schedule first came out, didn’t it? Two still-new coaches -- one in his first year, the other in his second -- two programs on the way back, two fan bases that feel they’ve paid enough dues. It had all the makings.

Well, it still has intrigue. But that’s due to the public now waiting to see if the Irish fall to 0-2 in a season that had so much promise. But be careful. Notre Dame moved the ball well vs. South Florida. If they limit turnovers, this week could be a different story.

“They played awful. Coach (Brian Kelly) was really angry and I expect him to stay angry this week in practice,” Avello said. “That’s why I like Notre Dame here. I really think they can bounce back.”

Instant replay: College football Week 1 betting recap

It wasn’t the most dynamic opening weekend of college football, was it?

With the rotten weather, a pile of dud performances, and very few contests going down to the wire, we waded into the football season waters – instead of our usual cannonball.

The good news, of course, is that with live college football comes real live odds on games that actually mean something. After each week of football, we’ll recap all the betting goodies from college and the pros.

              Let’s dig in.

              Tally Ho

The real betting discrepancy in Week 1 was in the tally of the totals. Based on Covers.com’s odds just before kickoff the over dominated throughout the opening week, going 53-24.

Meanwhile, Week 1 college underdogs narrowly edged favorites 40-37, but only six of those pups won outright - Northwestern (+6), South Florida (+10), Ball State (+5), LSU (+3.5), Richmond (+12) and Sacramento State (+24).

The South Florida Bulls were one of the big winners, by dropping Notre Dame 23-20, while LSU manhandled Oregon in a 40-27 blowout in the game everybody was waiting for.

Outside of those games, the weather that caused delays across the country really was the big story – just ask Western Michigan supporters. Set as 14-point underdogs against Michigan, the Broncos were down 34-10 in the third quarter when the game had to be delayed due to thunderstorms. College games need to go 55 minutes for an official result, so the 44-minute win did nothing for Wolverines bettors.

              Top performers

I haven’t personally got into college football fantasy – at least not yet – but some of the kids had themselves huge days to get the season going even though their teams didn’t live up to expectations.

-USC’s 19-17 win over Minnesota left a lot to be desired considering he Trojans were 24-point favorites, but on the bright side, quarterback Matt Barkley completed 34 passes while Robert Woods had 17 catches – both school records.

-Oregon State true freshman Malcom Agnew leads the nation with 223 yards following last weekend’s upset loss in overtime to Sacramento State. Agnew reached paydirt three times, but the Beavers dropped a 29-28 decision as a 27.5-point favorite.

College football Top 25 betting cheat sheet: Week 2

Find out the facts for every Top 25 college football matchup on the Week 2 board in the weekly cheat sheet.

                Thursday

Arizona Wildcats at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-12.5, 60)

Why Arizona will cover: OSU allowed 34 points by Louisiana-Lafayette last week, which bodes well for the Wildcats’ rebuilding offense.

Why Oklahoma State will cover: The Cowboys unloaded 61 points last week – but didn’t cover. A young defense should have learned a lot from Week 1. Arizona was just 4-8 ATS in 2010.

Points: How Arizona will slow OSU is a mystery. But the Wildcats have the potential to keep up.

                Friday

Missouri Tigers at Arizona State Sun Devils (+6, 49)

Why Missouri will cover: The Tigers’ offense struggled in a 17-6 win over Miami-Ohio, but fireworks are still expected from this unit.

Why Arizona State will cover: ASU has the quickness on defense to keep up, and the offense, led by an experienced offensive line, and could wear down Mizzou. ASU was a shocking 8-1-1 ATS in 2010.

Points: Both teams have offenses that can put up big numbers.

                Saturday

Florida Atlantic Owls at Michigan State Spartans (-33, 48)

Why Florida Atlantic will cover: MSU won’t throw anything out that the Owls didn’t see at Florida last week (of course, the 35-point underdog Owls lost by 38). And they only lost 30-17 to the Spartans last year.

Why Michigan State will cover: The defense should be suffocating and the offense is loaded. MSU may have the spread covered by halftime.

Points: Michigan State may have to do close to all of the scoring, a tough proposition.

Toledo Rockets at Ohio State Buckeyes (-21.5, 53)

Why Toledo will cover: One of the top teams in the MAC, Toledo returns 17 starters and could present problems for a still-meshing OSU squad, at least early on.

Why Ohio State will cover: OSU looked better than expected in last week’s opening victory. And the team gets key players back from suspension. Plus, these two teams played two seasons ago, with OSU winning 38-0. Other Ohio teams don’t fare well in Columbus.

Points: The over in Toledo games in was 8-5 last year. The over also hit in Ohio State’s first four games last season.

Oregon State Beavers at Wisconsin Badgers (-13.5, 60)

Why Oregon State will cover: The Badgers didn’t cover in an easy win over UNLV last week, and went 0-5 ATS in its first five games last year. Spread attacks have bothered Wisconsin. And you’re not going to find a more determined team to erase the memory of a Week 1 loss (Sacramento State).

Why Wisconsin will cover: The Beavers return just three starters from a 64th-ranked defense, including one in their front seven. Not good news against UW’s punishing ground attack.

Points: The over hit in the Beavers’ first six games of ’2010. The Badgers scored under 30 points only once last season.

Mississippi State Bulldogs at Auburn Tigers (+1, 62)

Why Mississippi State will cover: The Bulldogs looked great in a 59-17 thrashing over Memphis, while the Tigers would have lost to Utah State it not for a recovered onside kick. Its offense returned eight starters from 2010 and is expecting a breakout year.

Why Auburn will cover: Redemption will be a big motivator for Auburn. Auburn is 7-2 ATS vs. MSU its last nine meetings. We’ll see how Mississippi State reacts to being a SEC road favorite.

Points: Auburn will need to improve across the board to get over this total, but that’s possible.

Stanford Cardinal at Duke Blue Devils (+20, 58)

Why Stanford will cover: The Cardinal scored 35 points or more in all but one game last year. How is Duke going to handle that offense?

Why Duke will cover: The Blue Devils should be able to throw the ball this season. It didn’t happen well enough in Week 1 in a loss to Richmond. But if they can score 3-4 times, that forces Stanford to score in the 50s.

Points: Stanford’s going to score a ton. The question is whether Duke holds up its bargain and put a few points on the board.

TCU Horned Frogs at Air Force Falcons (+7, 61)

Why TCU will cover: TCU poured on 48 points against Baylor last week, but has something to prove defensively. Air Force might get caught in a TCU rampage.

Why Air Force will cover: Teams not ready for the Falcons’ triple-option can get burnt big time. And its defense is better than most think, despite limited size up front.

Points: Both teams have offenses that can spell trouble, but both have defenses that are motivated to improve upon last week’s effort.

Nevada Wolf Pack at Oregon Ducks (-22, 63)

Why Nevada will cover: Nevada is coming off a strong 13-1 campaign and wants to prove that Boise State isn’t the only mid-major program with annual big-boy beating chops. Plus, LSU exposed major flaws in Oregon last week.

Why Oregon will cover: The Ducks piled on lesser teams in 2010, and should be angry following the national TV embarrassment to LSU.

Points: It’s hard to imagine Oregon’s offense getting shut down as it did last week. Nevada can score, too.

Alabama Crimson Tide at Penn State Nittany Lions (+12, 49)

Why Alabama will cover: Loaded on both sides, Alabama should be too much for Penn State to hang with. The Tide went 4-0 ATS in non-conference games last year, so they don’t wait for the SEC to get physical. PSU’s run defense is suspect.

Why Penn State will cover: The Lions got shut down by the Tide last year 24-3, but now the series is in Happy Valley and PSU has something to prove. A potential strong run unit could take Alabama out of its game.

Points: Both teams have the potential to put up big numbers, but both have the defenses to hold the other down. Has the potential to be a grinder.

Virginia Tech Hokies at East Carolina Pirates (+19, 67)

Why Virginia Tech will cover: The Hokies didn’t take Appalachian State for granted, like it did in a loss to James Madison last season. They were still an impressive 10-3 ATS in 2010. Virginia Tech will run, run, run, and ECU was among the nation’s worst at defending the rush last year.

Why East Carolina will cover: Neat stat of the day: The Pirates went 6-0 in games it covered and 0-7 in games it didn’t in 2010. The Pirates hung with South Carolina before running out of gas in the second half.

Points: Judging by Week 1’s results, there should be loads of scores, especially from the Hokies.

South Carolina Gamecocks at Georgia Bulldogs (+1, 54)

Why South Carolina will cover: The Gamecocks have covered in their last four games against the Bulldogs. Once they made a QB change in their opener, the offense steamrolled to 56 points.

Why Georgia will cover: Despite coming off a down year, it’s always tough to win between the hedges (5-1 at home). USC’s defense is definitely suspect.

Points: The over hit in five of the Gamecocks’ first six games of 2010. Based on the Gamecocks’ efforts so far, both teams should put it in the end zone.

BYU Cougars at Texas Longhorns (-5, 47)

Why BYU will cover: BYU returns nine starters on offense and has a defense that grounded Ole Miss in a 14-13 victory in Week 1. Texas has great underclassmen, but they’re just that; inexperienced underclassmen.

Why Texas will cover: BYU is 1-5 ATS in its last six games. Plus, the Longhorns are on a mission to prove last year’s 5-7 mark was a fluke.

Points: Both teams will rely on stout defenses early on, which could limit scoring overall.

Fresno State Bulldogs at Nebraska Cornhuskers (-24. 52)

Why Fresno State will cover: Sophomore QB Derek Carr is supposed to be the real deal. We’ll find out Saturday.

Why Nebraska will cover: The Bulldogs are young and very inexperienced, which plays into Big Red’s hands, especially in Lincoln.

Points: Fresno couldn’t slow down a mediocre Cal team last week, and now gets an explosive Nebraska crew. Carr could lead the Bulldogs to a few scores.

New Mexico Lobos at Arkansas Razorbacks (-41, 52)

Why New Mexico will cover: It’s a big spread and the Lobos surprised some by holding Colorado State to just 14 points (in a 14-10 loss) and covering.

Why Arkansas will cover: In a 10-win season, the Razorbacks were 9-3 ATS. Their offense should go wild on a Lobos defense that ranks among the nation’s worst.

Points: It would be surprising, but not shocking, to see Arkansas top the total by itself.

UAB Blazers at Florida Gators (-24, 53)

Why UAB will cover: UAB can throw the ball effectively and should have one of C-USA’s top offenses. The Blazers lost to two SEC teams last year, but only by a combined eight points.

Why Florida will cover: The Gators hit the ground running last week under a new coach and system. Confidence should be high and the Gators have the talent to pull away by halftime.

Points: While Florida can score in a hurry, its main focus has been shoring up the defense. That will be tested against a free-wheeling Blazers squad.

Oklahoma State (-4.5) hammered Arizona 36-10 in Alamo Bowl LY, as Cowboys had five sacks and were +4 in turnovers. State is 11-5-1 as a home favorite last three years; they've got nine starters back on offense, with a senior QB (13 starts) who played minor league baseball, so he is a little older. Cowboys have all five starters back on OL. Arizona has five starters back on both sides of ball, with senior QB (22 starts) but the most inexperienced OL in whole country. Since 2008, Wildcats are 2-4-1 against the spread as road underdog.

Arizona at Oklahoma State: What bettors need to know
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Wildcats at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-14.5, 65)

THE STORY: No. 7 Oklahoma State will host Arizona in a rematch of the 2010 Alamo Bowl, in which the Cowboys defeated the Wildcats, 36-10.

Aside from losing their offensive coordinator, Dana Holgorsen, to West Virginia in the offseason, the Cowboys look remarkably similar to last year. Arizona, on the other hand, returns just 10 starters from a team that lost its last five games of the 2010 season after a 7-1 start.

Last year’s meeting was the first since 1942. Oklahoma State is 4-3 all-time against Arizona and has won five of its last six games against Pac-12 teams. Since 2008, Arizona is 10-2 overall in September, but just 2-2 on the road.

                      TV: ESPN 8 p.m. ET

ABOUT ARIZONA (1-0): Nick Foles threw for 412 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in Arizona’s 41-10 victory over Northern Arizona last week. Foles, a senior quarterback, had four of his TD passes after halftime and threw all five to different receivers. This game represents the first of a brutal four-game stretch for the Wildcats, who will play Stanford, Oregon and USC over the next three weeks.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (1-0): Oklahoma State racked up 666 total yards in last week’s 61-34 victory over Louisiana, the ninth-most yards in school history. In doing so, the Cowboys reached 60 points for the third time in the last 14 games as they scored on all 10 of their red-zone opportunities. The Pokes could have scored more if not for quarterback Brandon Weeden’s three interceptions.

LINE MOVES: The Cowboys opened as high as -15 and has been bet down as low as -14. The total opened at 64.5 points and has moved to 65 since post.

                      EXTRA POINTS:

                      1. Oklahoma State has won its last two Thursday night games by three points each. The Cowboys defeated Texas A&M 38-35 last year and held off Colorado, 31-28, in 2009.

                      2. Arizona coach Mike Stoops, now in his eighth season, has defeated a ranked opponent every year since arriving in Tucson.

                      3. Oklahoma State returns all five of its offensive line starters from last year’s team while Arizona’s offensive line is entirely rebuilt.

                      TRENDS:

                      - Wildcats are 4-0 ATS in their last four games as underdogs of 10.5 or greater.
                      - Cowboys are 4-1 ATS in their last five vs. Pac-12.
                      - Over is 6-2 in Wildcats last eight games overall.
                      - Over is 41-15 in Cowboys last 56 home games.

PREDICTION: Oklahoma State 45, Arizona 17 – Arizona’s offense looked like world beaters against undermanned Northern Arizona, but the Cowboys present a tougher test.

Missouri at Arizona State: What bettors need to know
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Missouri Tigers at Arizona State Sun Devils (-7.5, 52.5)

THE STORY: They’re calling this “Black Out Night” in Tempe, Ariz., as fans of No. 23 Arizona State are encouraged to wear black and the team will debut its new all-black uniforms and helmets. Both schools won their season openers, albeit in different fashion. The Sun Devils racked up 517 yards of offense in a 48-14 rout of UC-Davis, while No. 19 Missouri had only 291 total yards in a lackluster 17-6 victory over Miami (Ohio). These two schools have met five times in their history, with the Tigers leading the all-time series 3-2, but they haven’t faced each other since a 30-9 home victory for Missouri in 1990.

TV: ESPN Line: Arizona State -8

ABOUT MISSOURI (1-0): Quarterback James Franklin threw one touchdown and ran for another in his first career start, but the sophomore failed to get the Tigers’ offense into any sort of rhythm and threw an interception that led to Miami’s only points. Instead the defense was responsible for the victory, forcing two turnovers and holding the RedHawks to 2.1 yards per carry. It’s the second time in the last three games the Tigers will play in Sun Devil Stadium; they lost to Iowa in the Insight Bowl there last year.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (1-0): The Sun Devils are picked to finish second in the Pac-12 South but have a legitimate shot at competing in the conference’s inaugural championship game given that USC is still banned from postseason play. With 300 yards passing and 217 on the ground in the opener against UC-Davis, Arizona State had a balanced attack and led 41-0 after three quarters. Brock Osweiler, the tallest quarterback in the FBS at 6-8, threw for 262 yards in his first career home start.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Missouri has won five road openers in a row — all by double digits — but has never won six consecutive road openers.

                        2. Arizona State last hosted a non-conference BCS school in 2008, a 27-10 loss to No. 3 Georgia.

                        3. The Tigers have won 22 consecutive non-conference regular-season games.

                        TRENDS

The Tigers are 5-13 ATS in their last 18 games against teams with winning records but 6-2 ATS in their last eight games following a straight up win.

Arizona State is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 home games and 5-1 ATS in their last six games following an ATS loss.

The under is 9-2 in Mizzou's last 11 nonconference games.

                        LINE MOVES

The spread opened at the touchdown mark in favor of the Sun Devils and got bet up to -8 but dropped down a half point to 7.5, the number just about all shops are now using.

PREDICTION: Arizona State 31, Missouri 21. -- In a tough Friday night atmosphere, the Tigers won’t be able to score quite enough points to keep up with the Sun Devils’ fast-paced attack.

Iowa won its last three games vs Iowa State by combined score of 87-15; they were +7 in turnovers in last two series games. Underdog is 7-3 vs spread in last 10 series games, with Hawkeyes 3-4 SU in last seven trips to Ames. Iowa is 4-10 vs spread in last 14 games as road favorite; they had a 148-140 rushing edge in their opener vs I-AA foe. State survived Northern Iowa 20-19 last week, scoring late to edge their I-AA guest.

Auburn was down 38-28 to Utah State with 3:38 left, escaped with win last week after recovering an onside kick; they'll need much better effort to beat a Mississippi State team they've beaten nine of last 10 meetings (7-2 vs spread). Three of last four series games were decided by 5 or less points. State is 2-1 as a series favorite- they crushed a dreadful Memphis team last week. Bulldogs covered four of last five as a road fave. Auburn is 12-7 vs spread in its last 19 games as an underdog.

Tennessee is just 18-20 the last three years, but this is first time since 2008 they've had same coach two years in row; Vols have soph QB and four soph starters on OL- they're 14-8-1 as home favorite since '07, and have rivalry game with Florida on deck. Cincinnati is 9-11-1 as road dog since '04, 5-11 vs spread in last 16 non-league games. Bearcats have three senior starters on OL and ten starters back on defense.

Hawai'i's QB Moniz ran ball for 121 yards, passed for 178, accounting for four TDs in fairly easy win over Colorado last week, as Washington was hanging on to beat I-AA national champ Eastern Washington 30-27, picking off pass in end zone to seal win. Eastern had 473 passing yards. Huskies are 4-12 in last 16 games as home favorite- their QB Price hurt his knee last week, played second half with brace. Hawai'i covered nine of last 12 non-league games; they're 8-6 as road underdog since 2006.

Cal Bears (-10) crushed Colorado 52-7 LY, scoring two defensive TDs, with other TD drives of 31-19 yards. Cal is 11-5 vs spread in its last 16 non-league games, but since '07, they're just 4-11 as road favorite. Buffs are 8-3-1 in last dozen games as home dog; they got outrushed 165-17 by Run/Shoot Hawai'i last week. Colorado is in Pac-10 now but this isn't a league game. Cal outgained Fresno State 413-213 in easy win last week.

In its last ten games as an underdog, Penn State is 1-9 vs spread; this is a huge game for their diminishing national profile, against dominant Bama defense that has 10 starters back from team that held Lions to 283 total yards in easy 24-3 (-12.5) win LY. JoePa is expected to watch game up in press box; he's covered only two of last nine non-league games. Tide covered 12 of last 15 non-league games- they held Kent State to just 90 yards in last week's 48-7 win. First road start for Tide QB McCarron.

TCU gave up 50 points in opening loss at Baylor, now visits Air Force Academy- their last two visits here were both decided by a FG. TCU is 32-14-1 vs spread in league games since joining MWC; they're 10-6 as a road favorite since 2008. Frogs won six of last seven series games, with four of six wins by 24+ points, but last win here was just 20-17. Hosts covered four of last five as home dog- they've got a senior QB who has 32 career starts. Air Force is 19-13 vs spread in last 32 MWC games.

Home side won nine of last ten NC State-Wake Forest games, with dogs 9-5 vs spread in last 14; Wolfpack lost last four visits here, allowing 33.3 ppg. State is 12-8 vs spread on road under O'Brien; they covered 17 of last 24 ACC games, but are just 9-26 vs spread in last 25 games as faves. Wake lost opener in OT at Syracuse despite passing for 326 yards and outgaining the hosts by 107 yards. State's QB is making first road start; they have no seniors on OL. Deacons have four senior starters on OL.

Veteran QB Moore was 28-34/261 passing vs Georgia last week; Boise had 24 first downs, now Dawgs face another senior QB in Garcia, who rallied South Carolina from 17-0 deficit vs East Carolina last week. 0-2 start would be brutal for embattled Georgia coach Richt, who beat South Carolina five of last seven years. Four of last five series games were won by 5 or less points. Gamecock are 18-11 in last 29 games as favorite, 7-3 in last ten as road favorite. Dawgs are 5-8 in last 13 games as the dog.

BYU was down 13-0 in 4th quarter last week at Ole Miss, wound up a winner thanks to ugly defensive TD; Cougars had just 91 rushing yards, outgained Rebels 316-208 but Ole Miss starting QB was suspended for game. Texas had 229 rushing yards, 277 passing in methodical win over Rice; total yards were 506-224, but game was only 13-6 at half. Texas is 4-8 in last dozen games as favorite- they've got junior QB and start three sophs on OL. Second straight trip east of Mississippi for Cougars.

Utah's first-ever Pac-12 game will be played on Coliseum field that was chewed up by a concert this week; not good. Norm Chow returns to LA running Utes' offense-- Utah was 24-15-1 vs spread in last 40 games in MVC- since 2006, they're 4-5 as road underdog. USC didn't score after halftime last week, running ball for only 64 yards, passing for 304, with prolific WR Woods running amok in shaky 21-19 win vs Minnesota. SC covered only three of last twelve games as a home favorite.

Since 2007, Central Florida is 12-6-1 as home favorite; they're 8-4 in last dozen non-league games. Knights have electric soph QB who can really run, and an experienced OL (87 returning starts). Boston College lost at home to Northwestern last week, giving up 227 rushing yards. BC threw ball for surprisingly hgih 375 yards- they've got nine offensive starters back. Teams last met in '08, with Eagles (-10) winning 34-7, but O'Leary is building the UCF program up- they're much better now than then.

Underdog is 10-2 vs spread in last dozen Notre Dame-Michigan games, with dogs 6-1 SU in last seven series games. Irish are 0-3 SU last three times they were favored. ND lost five of last six visits here- they lost at home to South Florida last week, turning ball over three times inside USF 20-yard line, so Irish switch to Rees at QB. First-ever night game at Big House; expect raucous atmosphere after Wolverines won last week in a game shortened by lightning.

Alabama at Penn State: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alabama Crimson Tide at Penn State Nittany Lions (+10, 42)

                            THE STORY
: When No. 2 Alabama travels to No. 20 Penn State on Saturday, it won’t be just a matchup of ranked teams and two of college football’s most storied programs. It will be the continuation of quarterback auditions at both schools. Alabama used sophomore AJ McCarron and freshman Phillip Sims in last week’s 48-7 season-opening victory over Kent State. McCarron passed for 226 yards and a touchdown against the Golden Flashes, but threw two interceptions. Sims also was picked off twice, passing for 73 yards. Both are expected to play this week.

Penn State, which opened the season with a 41-7 rout of Indiana State, also deployed two quarterbacks in its opener. Sophomore Rob Bolden started, passing for 37 yards. Senior Matt McGloin passed for 77 yards. Both are expected to play this week. Neither threw a touchdown in the opener as the Nittany Lions relied on a ground game that piled up 245 yards.

Alabama leads the all-time series 9-5. Before last season’s 24-3 Alabama victory in Tuscaloosa, the two teams had not met since 1990.

                            TV: ABC 3:30 p.m. ET

LINE MOVES: Most books opened with Alabama as a 10.5-point road favorite. The spread has dropped to -10 in favor of the Crimson Tide as of Friday afternoon. The total opened as high as 43.5 points but has since been bet down to 42.

ABOUT ALABAMA (1-0): With former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram now in the NFL, Trent Richardson has become the focal point of the Crimson Tide running game. The junior rushed for three touchdowns against the Golden Flashes. Against Penn State last season, Richardson rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown as Ingram sat with a knee injury. Freshman linebacker Trey Depriest won SEC Co-Freshman of the Week honors, leading the Crimson Tide with 10 tackles against Kent State.

ABOUT PENN STATE (1-0): Like Alabama, the Nittany Lions have a new leader at running back. Sophomore Silas Redd scored two touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards against Indiana State. Redd figures to face a much stiffer challenge this week: Alabama leads the nation in rushing defense after holding Kent State to minus-9 yards.

                            EXTRA POINTS:

                            1. Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, 84, has been a part of all 14 previous Penn State-Alabama games, dating back to the first meeting in the 1959 Liberty Bowl, when Paterno was an assistant coach.

                            2. 532 – The combined win total for Paterno (402) and Alabama head coach Nick Saban (130).

                            3. Paterno, who coached from the press box last week, said chances are good he’ll be on the sidelines Saturday.

WEATHER: Thundershowers could take the happy out of Happy Valley. The forecast is calling for a 40 percent chance of rain.

                            TRENDS:

                            - Crimson Tide are 7-0 ATS in their last seven non-conference games.
                            - Nittany Lions are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as home underdogs.
                            - Over is 8-1-1 in Crimson Tide last 10 non-conference games.
                            - Under is 7-1 in Nittany Lions last eight non-conference games.

PREDICTION: Alabama 21, Penn State 13 – The Crimson Tide have more weapons on offense and a better defense, and that will be enough to grind out a hard-fought victory in Happy Valley.

Game of the day: Notre Dame at Michigan
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Michigan Wolverines (+3, 54.5)

                              THE STORY
: Both teams will probably be happy if they can play a game without any rain delays. Michigan’s 34-10 victory over Western Michigan was called late in the third quarter, while Notre Dame sat through roughly three hours of weather delays in its season-opening 23-20 loss to South Florida. This is perhaps the most high-profile game on college football’s Week 2 slate as the schools have won a combined 11 national titles and are among the top three programs in all-time wins. Michigan led 21-7 last year, allowed 17 straight points and then came back to win on a Denard Robinson touchdown run with 27 seconds left. Michigan leads the all-time series 22-15-1.

                              TV: ESPN 8 p.m. ET

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (0-1): The Irish couldn’t overcome five turnovers against the Bulls. Three of Notre Dame's turnovers came in the red zone, with one - a fumble - getting scooped up and returned for a 96-yard touchdown. The Irish were held to zero points in their first four trips inside the South Florida 10-yard line. Coach Brian Kelly has made a change at quarterback, replacing Dayne Crist with Tommy Rees.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (1-0): Robinson looked comfortable running new coach Brady Hoke’s pro-style offense in the opener, but there were still some remnants of the spread offense that he experienced success in last year. Linebacker Brandon Herron was the Big Ten Player of the Week after becoming the first Michigan player in the modern era to score two defensive touchdowns in a game.

LINE MOVES: The spread opened at Michigan +3.5 as was bet up to 4.5 before action on the Wolverines moved the spread to a field goal as of Friday afternoon. As for the total, books originally posted 55.5. That number has come down a point to 54.5 at most books.

WEATHER: The first night game at the Big House could be a wet one, with rain in the forecast for Ann Arbor. There’s a 40 percent chance of showers for Saturday’s contest.
