White Sox, Tigers Continue Series In Detroit

The first place Detroit Tigers continue their weekend series against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday when the American League Central rivals meet at Comerica Park. FOX will air the game with the first pitch expected at 4:10 p.m. (ET).

Detroit held a 5.5-game lead over the White Sox and Cleveland Indians entering the series opener on Friday. The Tigers were laying -210 and up in the matchup that saw their ace Justin Verlander (20-5, 2.38) take on Chicago lefty John Danks (6-9, 3.63).

Saturday finds the Tigers sending out right-handed starter Brad Penny (9-10, 5.07), who is allowing over four earned runs per start in his last nine games. Starting for Chicago will be right-hander Gavin Floyd (12-10, 4.36), who has picked up a victory in six of his last eight starts.

The Tigers have held the division lead since July 21. The White Sox and Tigers have already met 12 times this season with Detroit leading the season series 7-5 and with six games remaining on the schedule between these teams, including this weekend set.

Detroit has accumulated a reputable home record this season of 39-29 and has been profitable betting option there this season at +5.87 units. But the Tigers have failed to put up that type of performance lately at Comerica Park, going just 13-14 at home in their last 27.

The distinct advantage Floyd seems to have over Penny in this matchup comes down to two simple pitching statistics that show consistency and effectiveness: WHIP and ERA. Floyd’s WHIP is over 0.3 points lower than Penny’s this season and his ERA is over nearly three-quarters of a run below Penny’s mark of 5.07.

These two statistics prove exactly why some trends matter more than others when it comes to picking divisional baseball games.

The White Sox seem to demonstrate exactly how much they continue to struggle on the road against the Tigers with a 2-7 mark in their last nine meetings in Detroit. But Floyd has had success pitching versus the Tigers during his career with the White Sox winning 10 of his 14 starts versus Detroit since he joined the Chicago rotation in 2007.

Detroit has been listed a favorite in their last 10 home games with the odds ranging from -110 to -270. With nearly a 6-game lead in the division over Chicago, expect that streak to continue in this three-game series against the White Sox.

The weather forecast shows a 40 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms in the Motown area for Saturday. The afternoon high is going to approach 90 with southwest winds in the 5-10 mph range.

St. Louis Cardinals Host Cincinnati Reds

The St. Louis Cardinals hope to keep their improbable push for the playoffs alive this Saturday when they host the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of a three-game weekend series.

Homer Bailey and Jaime Garcia take the hill for Saturday’s contest, which will be played at Busch Stadium at 4:10 p.m. (ET).

The season appeared lost for St. Louis when the Cardinals found themselves 10.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. But after sweeping a three-game series against the Brewers earlier this week, St. Louis narrowed the gap to 7.5 games and will try to keep climbing out of the hole this weekend.

St. Louis (73-64) has won four straight (+5.10 units) and six of the last seven (+4.75 units) in back-to-back series wins over Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. The Cardinals offense has come alive, resulting in the total going ‘over’ in seven of their last nine games.

Garcia (10-7, 3.73) returns from an eight-day break during which he worked on getting his game back on track. August was a terrible month for Garcia, who was 0-2 with a 6.84 ERA in five starts last month. St. Louis has lost his last three trips to the mound (-4.70 units).

Pitching against Cincinnati could help Garcia’s psyche, as he is 5-1 in six career starts against the Reds with a 3.38 ERA. Garcia gave up just one earned run in each of his two meetings against the Reds this season, both coming in July.

It’s been a disappointing year for the Cincinnati Reds (67-70) who won’t return to the playoffs after last year’s impressive run. The Reds entered this series against St. Louis with a four-game losing streak (-4.00 units) after being swept at home by the Philadelphia Phillies. It was the Phils first 4-game sweep in Cincinnati in over 95 years.

Bailey (7-6, 4.35 ERA) has been decent of late, giving up three runs or less in seven of his last nine starts. The Reds have broken about even from a betting perspective at 5-4 (+0.10 units) over that stretch.

Bailey has not fared well over the course of his career against St. Louis, going 2-4 with a 5.18 ERA in eight career starts. That said, he did pitch well in his only game against them this year, outdueling Garcia on July 17 after giving up just one run in 7 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati entered Friday with a 7-5 lead in the season series against St. Louis. The ‘over’ had the slight edge in total betting at 7-5 through the first 12 games.

The Reds have struggled on the road at 30-36 (-5.50 units). St. Louis hasn’t done a great job taking advantage of playing at Busch Stadium, only four games over .500 at home with a 35-31 record (-9.55 units).

Weather reports indicate a hot and muggy day in St. Louis, with temperatures up to 96 degrees and a slight chance of thunderstorms. Bronson Arroyo and Edwin Jackson are penciled in to pitch in the series finale on Sunday.
