Minnesota has a brand new coaching staff (from Northern Illinois) and this is a brutal spot for them to open. USC is loaded with talent and is a full year into the Kiffin scheme, especially on defense. Potential blowout.
1* Fresno State +9 1/2
Fresno's odd coach, Hill, stresses marquee non-conf games and his team is always ready for these early matchups. This is really a semi-neutral field game, in San Francisco (Cal will play all home games in SF this year), and there may not be a huge crowd edge.
1* Southern Mississippi -12 1/2
This is a matchup play. Southern Miss has almost everybody back from an unstoppable offense and they play a Louisiana Tech team that was terrible against the pass last year and has significant graduation losses. Southern Miss might win Conf-USA.
