Pittsburgh Pirates Open MLB Odds Set In St. Louis

The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals will meet for the fourth time in 11 days on Thursday when they square off in the series opener of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. The teams will face each other three more times in the middle of September at Pittsburgh, and both are considered long shots to catch the Milwaukee Brewers for the lead in the National League Central.

Thursday's series opener in St. Louis is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. (PT).

The Cardinals lost two of three at PNC Park early last week to start a negative trend of three consecutive series losses that pushed them 10 games behind the division-leading Brewers heading into Wednesday’s action.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh had dropped 14 of the previous 15 meetings with Milwaukee going into Wednesday’s series finale at home. The Bucs have won just two series over the past month, including the one against St. Louis.

Pittsburgh’s Charlie Morton (9-6, 3.42 ERA) has pitched great over his last four starts but does not have much to show for it. Morton has given up a combined three runs in 28 1/3 innings with the Pirates splitting those four games. They scored five runs in each of the wins and totaled one in the two losses.

Morton has been a much better pitcher on the road this season with a 6-2 mark and 3.07 ERA. He has been an underdog in five of his past six outings, cashing at +170 on the road against San Francisco on August 8 and +120 at home against the Cardinals on July 24.

The ‘under’ is 4-0 in his last four starts.

St. Louis will turn to Edwin Jackson (9-9, 4.03) in hopes of winning a series opener for the first time since August 12. The Cardinals have lost three of Jackson’s last four outings and are 2-3 since he joined the team after coming over in a trade from the Chicago White Sox.

Jackson has allowed three runs or less in his past three starts but has not received much run support in the two losses during that stretch. St. Louis was blanked 3-0 by the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in his last outing on Saturday as a small -105 favorite.

He has been favored in all five of his starts with the Cardinals, facing just three teams, including the Cubs and Brewers twice apiece.

The ‘under’ is 2-0-1 in his last three outings.

The weather forecast for St. Louis on Thursday calls for a high temperature of 87 degrees under sunny skies after a heat wave featuring isolated thunderstorms rolls through the area on Wednesday.

The series will continue Friday with a matchup of right-handers, Jake Westbrook for the Cards and James McDonald for the Pirates.

Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays MLB Betting Preview

The Detroit Tigers have built a comfortable lead in the American League Central and hope to deliver a knockout blow to the Tampa Bay Rays' chances of making a playoff run in the process Thursday.

The two teams are set to close out a four-game series with the first pitch scheduled for 10:10 a.m. (PT) at Tropicana Field.

Detroit captured the first two games of the series by outscoring Tampa Bay by a 7-3 margin, as the team has performed brilliantly away from Comerica Park. The Tigers have won 15 of their last 23 road games.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland has seen his lineup catch fire recently, especially catcher Alex Avila and shortstop Jhonny Peralta. Avila is hitting .429 with five home runs and 15 RBIs over his last 19 games, while Peralta has hit safely in seven straight games and is a .319 career hitter against the Rays.

Doug Fister (5-13, 3.49 ERA) will make his 26th overall start of the season and fifth in a Tigers uniform. He has tallied a 2-1 record and 4.57 ERA since being acquired from the Seattle Mariners. The right-hander is coming off an impressive 10-1 home win over the Cleveland Indians, allowing just a single run and six hits over seven strong innings.

It was certainly a bounce back performance after suffering a 8-5 loss on the road against the Baltimore Orioles in his previous outing (5 2/3 IP, 8 R).

Fister will be matching up with the Rays for the fifth time (fourth start) of his career, bringing in a 1-2 mark and 3.79 ERA, including a 3-2 home loss while pitching for Seattle at Safeco Field on June 4 (7 IP, 3 ER).

Bettors will be interested in knowing that the Tigers are 21-49 in their last 70 games played on artificial turf.

Tampa Bay has dropped the first five meetings with Detroit this season and is 19-22 all-time in the series under manager Joe Maddon. The Rays have scored just 13 runs against Tigers pitching thus far.

It’s now or never for the club in terms of making a run at the playoffs, as just 35 games remain and sitting 8 ½-games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East standings.

Jeremy Hellickson (11-8, 3.04 ERA) has led the team to four consecutive wins at Tropicana Field, including a sterling 8-0 home victory over the Seattle Mariners in his last appearance. The rookie right-hander tossed eight shutout innings in that effort, scattering six hits and registering five strikeouts.

Hellickson has tallied an even 1-1 mark and 1.35 ERA in two career starts versus the Tigers. He has done a great job in limiting Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera, holding him to a single hit in six at bats.

Total bettors will find that the ‘under’ is 11-1 in his last 12 home starts.

Home plate umpire Ed Hickox offers little in terms of handicapping this matchup, as the home team is 14-14 in his 28 contests this year, while the total is evenly split at 14-14 'over/under.'

Luke Donald Betting Favorite At The Barclays

Keegan Bradley is a long shot to duplicate his PGA Championship magic when he starts play at The Barclays golf tournament beginning Thursday.

The event will be held at the Plainfield Country Club in Edison, New Jersey. It’s the first time this tournament has been held at this venue and the third different location in the last four years.

The Barclays is the start of the PGA Tour playoffs, with the four events culminating with The Tour Championship and the $10 Million FedEx Cup top prize. Tiger Woods is not among the top-125 players eligible to play this week after missing so much time with injuries.

Bradley is the nephew of LPGA Hall-of-Famer Pat Bradley. He made history by becoming just the third golfer in over 100 years to win a major tournament on his first try. He won that PGA Championship in a playoff over Jason Dufner.

The 25-year-old Bradley also won in a playoff at the Byron Nelson Championship in May, but has finished 25th or worse in 16 of his 24 events this year. He has moved up to fifth in the FedEx Cup point standings, but is listed as a 50/1 long shot to win this week, with 18 golfers ahead of him.

Luke Donald (8/1) is the favorite this week. The world’s No. 1 player finished in the top-10 his last two tourneys, WGC-Bridgestone (tied for second) and the PGA Championship (tied for eighth). He’s fourth in the FedEx Cup standings with one PGA Tour win this year (three worldwide).

Steve Stricker (12/1) was in contention for his first major win at the PGA Championship, but a 73 on the final day ended in a tie for 12th. He does have two tour wins this year since June, the Memorial Tournament and John Deere Classic. He’s second in the FedEx Cup and won this tournament in 2007.

Adam Scott (15/1) has been in the news a lot lately after winning the WGC-Bridgestone with former Tiger Woods’ caddie Steve Williams by his side. Scott also finished seventh at the PGA Championship. He’s ranked 13th in the FedEx Cup.

Nick Watney (15/1) is ranked first for the FedEx Cup and will tee off the first two rounds with Stricker and No. 3 Webb Simpson. Watney has two PGA Tour wins this year and eight, top-10 finishes. He ended up just outside that range for the PGA Championship (tied for 12th).

Jason Day (18/1) is paired with Scott and Bill Haas for the first two rounds. Day is a fellow Australian like Scott and he’s still looking for his first win of the year, although he did finish second at both the Masters (a tie) and U.S. Open. He’s ranked 14th in the FedEx Cup.

Phil Mickelson (18/1) will tee off with Donald and the upstart Bradley. He’s the biggest name at any U.S. tourney he enters, as long as Woods is on the sidelines. The unpredictable lefty hasn’t done much in his three tournaments since a tie for second at the British Open. His one win this year was at the Shell Houston Open in April.

Matt Kuchar (25/1) is the defending champion of this event (-12), ending with a playoff win over Martin Laird. He’s still looking for his first win of the year, although he does have eight top-10 finishes. He’s 12th in the FedEx Cup.

Dustin Johnson is also 25/1, followed by Charles Howell III, David Toms, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson (all 30/1). There are six more golfers at 40/1 with the biggest names Jim Furyk and Sergio Garcia.

Simpson won last week at the Wyndham Championship with a -18 score. That was his first PGA Tour win ever and while it wasn’t a great field, he still needs to be watched at these odds. The relative unknown from North Carolina has seven top-10 finishes to go along with that No. 3 FedEx Cup ranking.

Ogando tries to silence Boston's loud bats

BOSTON RED SOX (79-50, +6.4 Units)

at TEXAS RANGERS (74-57, +1.6 Units)

First pitch: Thursday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
              Line: Texas -160, Boston +150, Total: 10

The Boston Red Sox regained sole possession of first place in the AL East with their victory Wednesday night and look to make it three straight wins in Texas on Thursday. After getting shut out in the series opener Monday, Boston has scored 24 runs on 30 hits in winning the past two. This has shrunk the Rangers lead in the AL West to only 2½ games over the surging Angels who have won six straight games.

Going for the Red Sox is left-hander Andrew Miller, who is coming off a decent outing Friday, allowing one run and three hits in 5.1 innings in a 7-1 victory. Despite a 2-0 record in August, Rangers starter Alexi Ogando has had a rough month, posting a 5.64 ERA and .333 opponents’ BA in four starts. Boston has been terrific against teams with a winning record this year, going 38-16 (+18.5 Units). Texas has not bounced back well after bad pitching performances, going 3-10 (-9.9 Units) after allowing 9+ runs in the previous game. The pick here is for underdog BOSTON to win Thursday night.

The FoxSheets provide two more trends backing the Red Sox:

BOSTON is 25-10 (71.4%, +13.6 Units) against the money line in road games after having won 4 or 5 of their last 6 games this season. The average score was BOSTON 5.4, OPPONENT 3.1 - (Rating = 2*).

BOSTON is 51-25 (67.1%, +17.6 Units) against the money line vs. AL teams allowing 4.7 or less runs/game on the season this season. The average score was BOSTON 5.5, OPPONENT 3.8 - (Rating = 2*).

Miller (5-1, 4.99 ERA) has never started against Texas before. Miller has pitched well in his past three road starts, going 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA. Although Boston is 8-1 when Miller starts this year, he’s really hurt himself with his poor control (30 BB in 48.2 IP). 1B Adrian Gonzalez is heating up for the Sox, hitting .435 (10-for-23) with three homers and seven RBI in his past six games.

Ogando (12-5, 3.30 ERA) will get the ball for Texas on Thursday and make his first career start versus Boston. In four relief appearances spanning 4.1 innings, Ogando has allowed one run and two hits while striking out five. Despite the bad August, Ogando pitched well on Saturday in Chicago, giving up two runs and six hits over seven innings, receiving a no-decision in a 3-2 loss.

Arizona aims for 3rd straight win in Washington

                ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (71-59, +15.0 Units)

at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (62-66, +5.2 Units)

First pitch: Thursday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
                Line: Washington -135, Arizona +125, Total: 8.5

After a rough 1-6 start to their East Coast road swing, the Diamondbacks can finish up with a third straight win over the Nats when they finish their trip in Washington Thursday night.

The Nats have the pitching edge on paper, but John Lannan is coming off a couple of rough starts. Facing the Phillies both times, he gave up 12 runs (four earned) over eight innings, walking nine and striking out just two. The Diamondbacks counter with rookie left-hander Wade Miley. He was overmatched in his first start, but faces a Nationals offense that’s 27th in the majors in OPS versus lefties (.665). The superior payout makes ARIZONA the pick.

The FoxSheets have another trend siding with the D-backs:

ARIZONA is 19-10 (65.5%, +10.2 Units) against the money line after having lost 4 or 5 of their last 6 games this season. The average score was ARIZONA 4.8, OPPONENT 3.7 - (Rating = 1*).

Lannan (8-9, 3.61 ERA) has posted a 1.04 ERA in four career starts against the Diamondbacks, but it’s been a bit of a smoke-and-mirrors situation. He struck out only eight and walked 12 over 26 innings in those starts. However, Arizona is just 13-for-84 (.155 BA) against Lannan. He’s been better at home all year, where he has a 3.03 ERA. But Lannan is just 1-3 with a 5.66 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over his past four home starts.

Filling in for the injured Jason Marquis, Miley made his big league debut Saturday in Atlanta, giving up five runs and seven hits over four innings and taking a loss. On a more encouraging note, he struck out five while walking only two. He was 4-1 with a 3.64 ERA in eight starts for Triple-A Reno this season.
