Wednesday’s betting tips: MLB favorites on a roll

    Who’s hot

MLB: St. Louis is 8-3 in Jaime Garcia’s last 11 home starts.

MLB: The over was 11-3 in the last 14 meetings between the Reds and Marlins in Florida ahead of Monday’s action.

MLB: The Cubs have won 10 of their last 15 games as an underdog.

    Who’s not

MLB: Pittsburgh has won just five of its last 19 home games.

MLB: The New York Mets have won only five of their last 21 games overall.

MLB: Colorado is just 3-9 in Aaron Cook’s last 12 starts.

    Key stat

72.8 – MLB favorites had won 72.8 percent of their games over the last seven days heading into Tuesday night’s action.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies – Howard sat out Tuesday’s game with inflammation (bursitis) in his left foot/heel area. The injury isn’t overly serious, but the team has him listed as day-to-day and will likely give him a couple games off.

    Game of the day

Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers (-115, 9)

    Notable quotable

“Flying out to Nashville to meet with Joel and the GM in the morning to see which way (we’re) going. Could get better or (worse).” – Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson on meeting with his agent and the team Wednesday in an effort to come to a contract agreement. Johnson is holding out to become one of the highest paid playmakers in the league, while the Titans have offered to make him the NFL’s highest paid running back. Tennessee is set as a 3.5-point home favorite Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

    Notes and tips

After spending 10 days in the minors, Logan Morrison will reportedly return to the Florida Marlins Wednesday. There was a lot of speculation as to why Morrison was sent down to begin with – many figured it was a punishment for his outgoing personality. He was only hitting .167 in his stint with Triple-A New Orleans.

LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson and three teammates were questioned Tuesday about their alleged roles in a Baton Rouge bar fight and were released without any arrests being made. The four Tigers reportedly gave their side of the story and provided witnesses to back up their claims. Most books currently have LSU’s home game against Oregon on Sept. 3 off the board.

The San Francisco Giants activated outfielder Carlos Beltran from the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game against the San Diego Padres. Beltran, who has been sidelined since Aug. 7, tested his injured wrist with a batting session. However, Giants manager Bruce Bochy kept Beltran out of Tuesday's lineup in order to give him a bit more rest. Beltran is expected to start Wednesday's game with San Francisco set as an early -200 favorite against San Diego.

      Wednesday's six-pack

-- Phillies are now 25-3 with Brian Schneider as their starting catcher.

-- Arizona's Shane Burroughs homered Tuesday for the first time since April 30th..................of 2005.

-- Charger-Cowboy exhibition game Sunday night was highest-rated TV show in the whole country last week.

-- Last two years, New Jersey Giants are 9-7 against the spread in first half of the season, 4-12 in the second half.

-- Former Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl is expected to receive a 3-year show cause order from the NCAA, meaning basically that he is headed to the D-League to coach pro ball this year. His days of being a bigtime college coach are pretty much over. Too bad.

-- Phillies beat the Mets 10-0 Monday, and were leading 9-0 Tuesday; up in the TV booth, Ron Darling was practically begging a pitcher to go out and drill a Philly hitter, to make a statement. Never happened.

      *******************

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff.......,,,

      13) Twins put Jim Thome on waivers pretty much as soon as he hit his 600th HR, but he might not leave Minnesota this year. Seems that Thome can veto any trade, and rumors have him wanting to reunite with old friend Charlie Manuel in Philly, but other NL teams will definitely block that from happening. Would hate to see him wind up in the Bronx; he’s too good a guy to root against.

      12) St Louis Cardinals are trying to catch the Brewers in the NL Central; their home plate umpire Tuesday was Jim Wolf, whose brother Randy pitches for Milwaukee. I’m sure Jim Wolf is totally honorable, but MLB should leave no question as to the integrity of the game. Seems like this is a situation that could and should be avoided. Let him do American League games in the second half of the season if Milwaukee is contending.

      11) Buffalo might not be good this year, but they look like they could be fun to watch. Bills had 4th and about three yards to go in first quarter in Denver Saturday, and they run a fake punt using Brad Smith; wonder why they didn’t hold one until the season opener? Play worked pretty well, but now its on film for all to see and prepare for.

      10) Bill Walton scored 44 points against Memphis State in 1973 college basketball title game; 38 years later, his son Luke has been hired as an assistant basketball coach at Memphis, effective until the NBA lockout ends. Walton was a player at Arizona while Tiger coach Josh Pastner was an assistant under Lute Olson.

      9) Funny how Walton (Laker player) can have contact with the college players during the lockout, but Laker coaches can’t. Former NBA guard Damon Stoudemire is also on the Memphis coaching staff.

      8) Billy Volek is the Chargers’ backup QB; in his 8-year NFL career, he’s started ten games (3-7), last of which was in 2005- eight of his ten starts came for the 2004 Titans. He’s thrown 561 NFL passes, with 27 TDs, 15 INTs, modest numbers for an 8-year career. Volek’s best stat? He’s earned about $16M in his football career. What a country.

      7) Not only haven’t the Redskins won an NFC East title since 1999, they weren’t favored in any of their eight home games last season. That’s not good. On the bright side, Redskins are 15-7-3 against the spread in their last 25 road games.

      6) Before Monday, Canada had been 0-16 against Taiwan in the Little League World Series, but on Monday the Canadian kids upset Taiwan 5-3 in Williamsport. Scary part is, someone puts betting lines out on these games, and if you took Taiwan, you had to lay $5,250 to win $100. Canadian backers collected $2,500 on a $100 wager.

      5) Bobby Valentine is good on Sunday Night ESPN games because he speaks his mind; very rare to hear an analyst go after a player the way he called out Cubs’ SS Starlin Castro Sunday night. They focused on the young shortstop for quite a while, saying how he looks like he’s not ready to field his position when the ball is pitched.

By calling out the young player, Valentine is really criticizing the Cubs’ coaches, who should be teaching the young player the right way to play.

      4) The governor of Colorado’s name is John Hickenlooper. Just thought you’d like to know.

      3) Colorado was up 8-6 lead in bottom of 8th inning Tuesday; as a right-handed hitter came to plate, Astors manager Brad Mills sent his lefty pitcher out to RF, brought in a rigthy reliever, and took his RF out. After the righty batter made out, Mills put in a new RF, took the righty pitcher out and brought his lefty reliever back in. Creative and it worked. Astros still lost, but Mills gave his team a better chance to come back.

      2) So I’m sitting at my desk in work Tuesday afternoon, and my chair starts to shake; I work on the 5th floor of a building, and in 29 years, the building has never shaken before. Turns out we were having an earthquake with a 5.8 magnitude. Doesn’t happen too often in this part of the world.

      1) Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dave Duncan and his family; the Cardinals’ pitching coach (and one of my boyhood heroes when he was a catcher for the A’s) left the team to tend to his ailing wife. Get well soon.

            Wednesday, August 24

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (12-9, 2.73 ERA)

Romero is riding a career-high five-game winning streak and has a 0.89 ERA over that span. In his last trip to the hill, he fired a complete-game shutout against the Athletics, holding them to three hits while striking out six and walking two.

"I think the key for me every time I go deep into games is strike one. That's big with me, and when I do that, I feel like I'm in control," he told the Blue Jays' official website.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (11-10, 2.53 ERA)

Lincecum hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his last eight starts, but thanks to some terrible run support, has picked up three losses along the way including a loss at Atlanta in his last outing.

He gave up a solo homer in seven innings of work while striking out seven and walking two. The Freak now has 182 strikeouts and with 18 more, will become the third pitcher in Giants history to reach 200 strikeouts in four straight seasons.

            Slumping

Trevor Cahill, Oakland Athletics (9-12, 4.17 ERA)

Cahill has just one win on his resume since June 30 and is coming off one of the worst starts of the season. He gave up seven earned runs on nine hits over just 5 1/3 innings of work in a loss to the Blue Jays, marking the third time in six outings that he’s been on the hook for seven or more runs.

This year looks like a major step back since he went 18-8 with a 2.97 ERA last year.

Jeremy Guthrie, Baltimore Orioles (5-16, 4.55 ERA)

Guthrie is listed as probable with shoulder stiffness and the Orioles have dropped each of his last three outings. During that span he has allowed 16 runs and four homers while striking out just five batters.

With 16 losses already, Guthrie has a shot at becoming Baltimore’s first 20-loss pitcher since 2003.

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at Cleveland Indians (-105, 7)

It was an eventful afternoon at Progressive Field on Tuesday and another interesting day for Shin-Soo Choo.

First, an earthquake gave everyone a scare in the opening half of the doubleheader before Choo rocked the Mariners with a game-winning, three-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Choo was considered questionable for that game after the birth of his daughter on Monday.

"It's like a movie," the South Korean said. "It's the first walk-off homer of my baseball career and one of the biggest. That's the perfect present, right?"

It was a tough start to the season for Choo, who was drilled with a DUI that hampered his play on the field, but he had hits in nine of the 10 games he has played since coming back from injury that put him on the shelf in late June to go along with seven RBIs.

The Indians have a long way to go to catch Detroit at the top of the division, though they could be dangerous down the stretch.

              Pick: Indians

Arizona Diamondbacks at Washington Nationals (+120, 8)

While a lot of people seem to be waiting around for the Diamondbacks to falter as the San Francisco Giants come around and capture another NL West title, Arizona is doing all it can to book its postseason ticket.

On Tuesday, the Diamondbacks sent Kelly Johnson to the Blue Jays in exchange for second baseman Aaron Hill and infielder John McDonald. Arizona gave Johnson every opportunity to succeed, but it was time for him to go and both Hill and McDonald could be very valuable down the stretch.

"My opportunity to play for the Diamondbacks for the next five or six weeks, plus post-season, is a great opportunity, an opportunity that I wake up every morning thinking about,” McDonald told reporters. “It's kind of what every baseball player wants. You want to try and play in the postseason and I'm extremely excited about that opportunity.”

McDonald will provide some depth, while Hill may benefit from a change of scenery. He hit .286 with 36 homers and 108 RBIs in 2009, but hasn’t found his stroke at the dish since that All-Star season.

Some new blood is a good thing for the D-Backs.

              Pick: Diamondbacks
