Wednesday’s betting notes: Jurrjens returns for Braves

    Who’s hot

MLB: Toronto has won eight of Brandon Morrow’s last 11 starts.

MLB: The over is 14-5 in Arizona’s last 19 heading into Tuesday’s action.

MLB: The Cubs had won eight of its last nine road games ahead of Tuesday’s game at Houston.

    Who’s not

MLB: The Rockies are just 2-9 in Aaron Cook’s last 11 trips to the hill.

MLB: Pittsburgh was 7-19 in its last 26 heading into Tuesday’s action.

MLB: The under was 2-23-4 in Oakland’s last 29 ahead of Tuesday’s game against Baltimore.

    Key stat

82.4 – The over has cashed in on 82.4 percent (14-3-2) of Zack Greinke’s starts for the Milwaukee Brewers this season. He is 4-1 with a miniscule 1.56 ERA in six starts since the All-Star break, but the over still came through in four of those games. Greinke and the Brewers are set as a -185 favorite Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers with an early 7.5-run total on the board.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jon Rauch, Toronto Blue Jays – Rauch was placed on the 15-day DL after undergoing an emergency appendectomy early Tuesday morning, leaving the Jays without many options for the closer role. The 6-foot-10 right-hander was 5-4 with 11 saves for Toronto, which may have to look to Jesse Litsch as its stopper for the next while.

    Game of the day

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-110, 9)

    Notable quotable

“Coach [Bill] Belichick, he’s the coach and he tells us what he wants to do. I used to fight things probably a lot more, but now you just kind of understand why he does things and I do my best to prepare no matter what the situation is.’’ – New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady earlier this week about being surprised that he was left out of the starting lineup in the team’s first exhibition game. Brady said that he expected to start right up until the night before the game against Jacksonville, so midweek Pats bettors, take note. New England is set as a 2.5-point underdog at Tampa Bay Friday.

    Notes and tips

Atlanta Braves starter Jair Jurrjens headed into the All-Star break with the National League’s best ERA (1.87). Since then, it’s all been downhill. He posted a 6.26 ERA in four starts before hitting the DL on Aug. 6 with a right knee strain, but says the time on the shelf has done him good. "This is the best I've felt this year," Jurrjens told reporters. "You can see the 15 days was a good idea. We didn't want to do it, but sometimes you need to be smart and not let the leg be a big thing."

Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon left the program Tuesday with the intent of transferring to another to another program – possibly Utah. Gordon was the team’s second-leading receiver last season, pulling in 42 catches for 714 yards and seven touchdowns, while also leading the Big 12 with 17 yards per reception. Baylor opens its season Friday, Sept. 2 as a 6.5-point home underdog to Texas Christian.

      Wednesday's six-pack

-- Mike Cameron is the first player in major league history to hit 2+ homers in a game for eight different teams.

-- Brian Bogusevic hit a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam as Astros rallied for four runs in the 9th to pin another loss on Carlos Marmol, 6-5.

-- Astros were 38-84 with 40 games left this season; over last 40 years, only three teams had a worse record at the same time, with '03 Tigers a ridiculous 31-91-- they were in the playoffs three years later.

-- Jason Bay has already had five different slumps this year where he went 0-12 or worse; thats 0-60 added into his average. Not good.

-- Tampa Bay played a twinbill at Fenway Tuesday but never went to its bullpen; they hit into a triple play, making it the first time since '81 there had been triple plays on consecutive days in the big leagues.

-- Juan Pierre ended a 5:21 marathon with a 14th-inning single at 1:30am as the White Sox beat Cleveland 8-7.

      **************

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff.........

      13) Stat of the Day, maybe of the Summer: Since 2003, Miami Dolphins have been favored at home 35 times; they’re 6-29 against the spread in those games. 6-29, as in 17.1%. Not good.

      12) Dodgers grounded into a second-to-short-to-first-to-home triple play Monday night, that’s 4-6-3-2 if you’re scoring at home. Why should we care? It’s the first one of those in the major leagues since 1973.

      11) I don’t put preseason football knowledge on this site because I refuse to encourage people to gamble on it. Only reasonably intelligent theory I’ve ever head on handicapping summer football was a sharp guy I used to know—he bet the over in all nationally televised exhibition games, figuring the networks would nudge the coaches to make the game a little more entertaining. Other than that, no rhyme or reason.

      10) Was surprised to see that over the last three seasons, Buffalo Bills are 15-9 vs spread on the road.

      9) Oklahoma State offers a course in “Geography of Sport”. Now there’s a college I could’ve gotten good grades in. Did you know singer Garth Brooks was once a javelin thrower at OSU?

      8) Apparently, NBA player Delonte West has applied for a job at Home Depot during the lockout. Seriously. I have nothing to say about this, other than it stopped me in my tracks when I read it.

      7) When I read that umpire Jerry Meals has five kids, it occurred to me that umpires are almost never home during the season; his wife must have a lot of fun from March-September, herding over five kids by herself.

      6) Long Beach State’s non-conference basketball schedule is once again overly ambitious: Pitt-San Diego State-Louisville-Kansas-North Carolina-Xavier. Probably makes the program profitable, but does it help their confidence? Winning begets confidence. Either way, they’re going to need to win the Big West tourney to get into the NCAA’s.

      5) I had forgotten that on August 25 last summer, the Giants trailed San Diego by 6.5 games in the NL West; not a lot of thrilling pennant races right now, but lot of ball still to be played. If there aren’t any great pennant races, its going to help the case for an extra Wild Card team.

      4) Former West Virginia/Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez has signed on with CBS Sports Network as an analyst, but fact of the matter is, I’d be lot more interested in what Jim Tressel has to say with a live mike in front of him.

      3) Since 2003, New England Patriots are 44-18-2 vs spread on the road, 16-6-1 vs spread as an underdog.

      2) I am a firm believer that Crime Scene Investigation should be a staple of high school education; once it is ingrained in kids how hard it is to get away with crime, maybe we’ll have less criminals. Plus, its an interesting field to study.

      1) Dammit, Tuesday would’ve been a great day to blow off life and drive three hours east to Boston to watch the Red Sox-Tampa Bay day/night twinbill. That would’ve been a superior summer day.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Streaking

Zack Greinke, Milwaukee Brewers (11-4, 4.08 ERA)

The Brew Crew are pulling away in the National League Central and Greinke is leading that charge. He’s 4-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his last four starts and is coming off a two-run, nine-strikeout outing versus the Pirates that lasted 7 2-3 innings last Friday. The righty is stellar at home as well, going 8-0 with a 3.36 ERA inside Miller Park.

Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels (9-8, 3.10 ERA)

Santana has been the best pitcher in the American League since the All-Star break, boasting a 5-0 mark and 1.09 ERA in six starts since the Mid-Summer Classic. He’s allowed one run or fewer in each of his last five outings and gave up just one run on seven hits in a complete game against the Blue Jays Friday.

                          Slumping

Paul Maholm, Pittsburgh Pirates (6-13, 3.60 ERA)

The Pirates’ ship is sinking faster than a rock in the NL Central standings. The Bucs currently sit fourth and send struggling southpaw Maholm to the mound Wednesday. He’s winless in his last six appearances and has dropped three straight starts. Maholm boasts an ERA north of 7.00 during this span, and lasted only five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, in his most recent start against the Brewers last Friday.

Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants (9-9, 3.00 ERA)

Many a Giants starter has undeservedly found themselves on the bottom of streaking and slumping. Cain has been there before. He’s currently 0-3 with a 3.66 ERA in his last three outings, thanks to more lackluster offense from San Francisco’s bats. The right-hander has been sharp his last two outings, giving up a total of three runs over 14 innings, but received only one run of support in those two games.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox (-145, 8)

Say what you will – and many have said plenty – about Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski, but the guy has been incredibly durable for a backstop.

He was hit by a pitch from Kansas City’s Bruce Chen Friday and now he’s headed to the DL for the first time in his 10-year career with a fractured wrist, which is pretty remarkable considering the innings he has logged over the years .

Pierzynski was hitting .296 with six homers and 39 while leading the American League in both games played (103) and innings caught (862 1/3).

While the injury is certainly a tough blow to the White Sox, it could also give Tyler Flowers the opportunity he has been looking for. Flowers will get the bulk of the starts behind the plate now and heading into Tuesday’s action and he already had four hits in seven at bats (including his first big-league homer) after Pierzynski hit the shelf.

With Mark Buehrle looking more like himself over his last few starts, we’ll jump on the White Sox here.

                            Pick: White Sox

New York Mets at San Diego Padres (-140, 6.5)

It was pretty obvious when the Mets traded Carlos Beltran at the deadline that the club was ready to start playing for next year. Tuesday’s announcement that New York planned to hand the closing role to Bobby Parnell was the next logical step.

Parnell has the stuff to be a force in the ninth inning, sporting a 97 mph fastball which has helped him pile up 49 strikeouts in 40 innings this year.

Whether Parnell will even get a chance to showcase his skills Wednesday is obviously debatable, but there’s no harm in giving the kid a shot at the closing role now that Jason Isringhausen notched his 300th career save.

However, the Mets had won just three of their last 13 games in San Diego heading into Tuesday’s action and with the struggling Dillion Gee starting against Mat Latos, we’ll stick with the home team here.
