Mark Buehrle, White Sox Host Cleveland Indians

The three-way race in the AL Central is sure to be hot and heavy from now all the way through the end of the season. On Wednesday night, MLB betting fanatics will love to sink their teeth into the clash between two of these three rivals, as the Cleveland Indians face off with the Chicago White Sox at US Cellular Field.

Entering this 3-game series in the Windy City, Cleveland is trailing the Detroit Tigers by two games in the AL Central standings. Chicago is 3.5-games out of first place. With no hope at the AL Wild Card slot this year, it's clear that this division is only getting one postseason team, so the importance of this series is paramount.

The first pitch on Wednesday night is slated for 5:10 (PT), and there will be TV coverage on SportsTime and WCIU-TV.

Once upon a time, both of Wednesday's starters were 19-game winners. However, Cleveland's Fausto Carmona (5-12, 5.12 ERA) and Chicago's Mark Buehrle (10-5, 3.06 ERA) have fallen off and are no longer among the elite pitchers in the game.

Buehrle is the best hope to pitch the White Sox to the postseason, though. He has led his team to eight wins in his last nine starts, and he is 4-0 in that stretch, having not lost a game since June 16.

As always, Buehrle has pitched phenomenally at home this year, going 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA in his 11 starts. He has only allowed two earned runs in his last three outings here at US Cellular Field, a true testament knowing that he has gone up against the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins in that stretch.

The southpaw has never been known as a strikeout pitcher; after all, he only has 83 K's in his 156 innings of work on the campaign.

However, he does a great job pitching to contact and trusts his defense. Batters are hitting .261 against Buehrle, yet his WHIP is a miniscule 1.20 thanks to the fact that he has walked just 32 batters.

Carmona is a totally different story and has lostat least a dozen games in three straight seasons. Velocity and pitch location are definitely troubling the right-hander right now, two things that you never want to hear out of any pitcher, let alone a starter trying to regain his form. Carmona only has 76 strikeouts on the season and has walked 42 batters.

It also doesn't help matters that Carmona is allowing batters to hit .267 against him, nor are his 18 homers allowed in just 23 starts.

The good news for Carmona is that he is 7-5 in 15 career appearances against the White Sox. The bad news is that he was lit up for eight runs in five frames in his last meeting against them, and the worse news is that he allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in three innings in his first start of the year against them. Carmona's career ERA vs. Chicago is a fat 6.08.

The Tribe has won just two of their last 14 games against Chicago, including going just 1-6 this year. The White Sox have averaged a whopping 5.71 runs per game against Cleveland this season as well.

Chicago's weather forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of rain on Wednesday with a game-time temp expected to be in the upper 70s.

Phillies Heavy World Series Betting Favorites

    Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Among the Wednesday matinees is at Petco Park where the New York Mets and San Diego close out a 3-game set.The MLB playoff picture is starting to take shape with seven teams fighting for the four spots in the American League and six squads battling it out in the National League.

World Series odds have been updated and are listed in parenthesis. These odds have changed a good bit since the all-star break due to trade acquisitions, injuries and teams simply going hot or cold.

Philadelphia (+160) has basically secured a playoff spot, but isn’t taking anything for granted, going 13-2 in its last 15 games. The starting pitching leads MLB with a 2.99 ERA and the biggest concern may be more rest for inning-eaters Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee.

The offense has been bolstered by the Hunter Pence trade, averaging almost a full run more (5.28) since July 30. There is almost no weakness on this squad.

Boston (+300) is fighting it out with the Yankees in the AL East, with the loser having a firm grip on the AL wild card. Baseball’s best offense this year (5.41 runs per game) has dipped in August (4.46), but will bounce back. More concerning is the No. 3 starter in the postseason with Clay Buchholz (back injury) likely out for the season. Having to rely on John Lackey or Erik Bedard for that role could be the downfall.

The NY Yankees (+450) have mashed the ball since the all-star break (5.94 runs per game), tops in MLB. That’s despite playing without Alex Rodriguez (knee) who should return soon. New York’s starting pitchers have overachieved all season (3.72 ERA), but having Bartolo Colon and A.J. Burnett as the playoff starters after ace CC Sabathia is a scary proposition for Yanks fans.

Milwaukee (+800) is the NL’s second-favorite and holds a 6-game cushion over the Cardinals in the NL Central standings. With NL East Atlanta the favorite for the NL wild card, Milwaukee could avoid Philly until the NLCS. The Brewers have been red-hot in their own right lately, winning 17-of-19. Their suspect pitching has been great after the break with MLB’s best ERA (2.75).

Texas (+800) isn’t getting a lot of respect as the defending pennant champ. The offense (5.16 runs per game) is third in MLB this year after Boston and the Yankees. Team ERA (3.11) leads the AL post-break and five starters are in double-digit wins. C.J. Wilson needs to prove he can be a playoff ace, and the offseason loss of Cliff Lee could really be felt in the postseason.

Atlanta (+1000) has a 5-game lead over San Fran and six over St. Louis for the wild card. The Braves were just 9-10 coming out of the break, but are 8-3 in the 11 since. The starting pitching is a concern with Jair Jurrjens (knee) and Tommy Hanson (shoulder) both scuffling since the break and currently on the DL. They need to pitch great in the playoffs to justify these MLB betting odds.

San Francisco (+1200) is the defending World Series champion and favored over the Arizona Diamondbacks (+2000) despite trailing them by 2.5 games in the NL West. The Giants’ offense has struggled all year (last in the NL) and hasn’t been helped by the addition of Carlos Beltran, who struggled (.617 OPS) even before hurting his hand. They are dangerous with their stellar pitching staff if they make the playoffs.

The rest of the teams with legitimate World Series hopes are Arizona (+2000), Detroit (+2000), Cleveland (+2500), Chicago White Sox (+3000), L.A. Angels (+3000) and St. Louis (+4000).

Arizona isn’t getting a lot of respect at these odds after taking advantage of an easy recent schedule. Starters Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson have 15 and 12 wins respectively, but no playoff experience.

For Detroit, Cleveland and the White Sox, it’s ‘AL Central title or bust.’ Detroit has ace Justin Verlander, but no legitimate second-starter unless Max Scherzer suddenly gets hot.

The Angels would be dangerous in the playoffs with their starting pitching, defense and experience, but a recent slide has them 5-games back of Texas in the AL West.

Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks MLB Betting Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies are both in position to make the 2011 Major League Baseball postseason, as they meet in the second of a three-game set Wednesday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 (PT) at Citizens Bank Park with ESPN providing the broadcast.

Arizona closed out a 10-game homestand with six consecutive victories, sweeping three games from both the Astros and Mets. The Diamondbacks' recent surge has allowed the club to enter the series with a 2.5-game lead in the National League West standings over the San Francisco Giants.

The offense has been led by All-Star outfielder Justin Upton, who has gone 15-for-40 with three home runs and eight RBIs over the last 10 games. The 23-year-old also became the fifth player in franchise history to reach the 25-homer mark in more than one season.

Joe Saunders (8-9, 3.76 ERA) will be looking for his first August victory, coming in allowing nine runs (eight earned) and 19 hits over 11 1/3 innings in two starts. The left-hander has been a solid option on the road, posting a winning 6-4 mark and 2.77 ERA, as opponents are hitting just .229 against him.

The D-Backs have won his last four starts away from Chase Field, outscoring opponents 20-7 over that span.

Saunders has tallied a 1-1 record and 4.58 ERA in three lifetime appearances versus the Phillies, including an 8-4 home loss on April 27 (5 2/3 IP, 10 H). It's the only defeat Arizona has suffered to Philadelphia in three meetings this year.

Total players will find that the ‘over’ is 14-5 in the Diamondbacks last 19 games overall.

Philadelphia has the best record in the National League and second-best mark in all of baseball at home. The Phillies were a dominating 42-19 at Citizens Bank Park entering Tuesday's series opener. The club is likely to improve both marks in Game 2 thanks to posting a NL-best 22-9 in games against left-handed starting pitchers. Only the New York Yankees have a better record in such matchups (25-10).

Cliff Lee (12-7, 2.83 ERA) has gotten back on a roll this month, coming in with a 2-0 record and tossing 17 scoreless innings with as opponents hitting just .186 against him. The numbers are eerily similar to his 5-0 mark and 0.21 ERA in five starts during June.

The veteran left-hander is 8-2 with a 2.26 ERA in 13 home starts, issuing just 19 free passes and collecting 102 strikeouts in 95 2/3 frames.

Lee will be making his fourth lifetime start versus the Diamondbacks, coming in with a 2-1 record and 3.43 ERA, dropping a 4-0 road contest on April 25 (7 IP, 4 ER).

Bettors will find that the Phillies have won seven consecutive meetings at Citizens Bank Park, averaging 7.14 runs per game over that span.

Weather forecasts suggest game-time temperatures in the low-80s and a slight southern breeze of 5-10 mph (out to center). The teams conclude their series Thursday night when Ian Kennedy is expected to face Vance Worley.

Lee tries to stop Arizona's 7-game win streak

            ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (69-53, +18.9 Units)

at PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (78-42, +18.0 Units)

First pitch: Wednesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
            Line: Philadelphia -250, Arizona +225, Total: 7.5

After the Diamondbacks beat Roy Halladay and the MLB-best Phillies 3-2 Tuesday night for their seventh straight win, the Phillies will look to even the series at one apiece. They’ll send Cliff Lee to the mound, who hasn’t allowed a run in his past two starts spanning 17 innings. With the tough southpaw on the mound, Arizona will face another uphill battle.

The D-backs are now 3½ games ahead of the Giants who were dealt a further blow Tuesday with not only a loss in their game, but also with Carlos Beltran officially heading to the D.L. The Phillies sit more comfortably atop their division with nine fewer losses than the second-place Braves. The Diamondbacks throw out the lefty Joe Saunders who despite having decent season numbers, has struggled recently. Even though they are heavy chalk, the Phillies thrive in this situation, going 72-34 (+19.3 Units) when favored, including 15-5 this year when favored at -200 or more. The pick here is PHILADELPHIA.

The FoxSheets have a three-star trend that emphasizes Philadelphia’s chances against the money line:

PHILADELPHIA is 32-9 (78.0%, +20.8 Units) against the money line after a loss this season. The average score was PHILADELPHIA 4.9, OPPONENT 2.9 - (Rating = 3*).

A big question for this game is whether or not the D-backs will be able to get to Lee the way they did earlier in the season. Although he notched 12 strikeouts, Arizona tagged him for four earned over seven innings in a 4-0 win.

Saunders (8-9, 3.76 ERA) has allowed nine runs (8 ER) over 11.1 innings in two August starts, after a strong month of July in which he went 4-1 with a 2.16 ERA. The Phillies clobbered him for six runs over 5.2 innings in April. The good news for Saunders is that he has been a stud on the road this year with a 2.77 ERA and .229 opponents’ BA away from home.

Lee (12-7, 2.83 ERA) was not his typical dominant self to start the year, but has figured it out over the past few months. Since the beginning of June, he has allowed no runs in six of those 12 starts, with four of those being complete games. In that span he has a 1.86 ERA and 0.94 WHIP, with 87 K and just 15 walks. In three career starts versus Arizona, Lee is 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA, .192 opponents’ BA, 27 K and 4 BB in 21 innings.

Red-hot Yankees look for sweep in K.C.

NEW YORK YANKEES (74-46, +12.8 Units)

at KANSAS CITY ROYALS (50-73, -14.2 Units)

First pitch: Wednesday, 8:10 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -165, Kansas City +155, Total: 9.5

The streaking Yankees look for a three-game road sweep when they face the disgruntled Royals on Wednesday night. New York has won 13 of its past 17 games to take the lead in the AL East.

Yankees starter Bartolo Colon is 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA in his past four outings, all New York victories. The Royals counter with lefty Bruce Chen who is 1-5 with a 6.71 ERA in 16 career games against the Yankees. New York has peppered left-handed starters all year, amassing a 26-10 record (+13.4 Units) against them. The Royals might have a case of night blindness, considering they are a miserable 33-52 (-14.3 Units) under the lights. The -165 line is a steep price for Bartolo Colon, but the way the Yankees hit lefties, NEW YORK is close to a sure thing to complete the sweep Wednesday night.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Yankees.

Play Against - All underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (KANSAS CITY) - poor offensive team - scoring <=4.7 runs/game on the season (AL), after allowing 9 runs or more. (273-114 over the last 5 seasons.) (70.5%, +102.5 units. Rating = 3*).

Colon (8-6, 3.31 ERA) threw six innings in his last outing, allowing five hits and two runs, but was stamped with a no-decision. Colon has had recent problems on the road, going 0-2 and allowing 13 runs (6 ER) in 11.2 innings over his past three road starts. Colon is facing the Royals for the first time since May 4, 2009 when he recorded a 3-0 loss as a member of the White Sox. He’s 15-8 with a hefty 4.80 ERA in 26 career starts versus Kansas City.

Bruce Chen (7-5, 4.15 ERA) is coming off one of his best outings of the year, throwing six shutout innings against the White Sox, and allowing only one hit. Chen also has pitched very well at home, going 4-1 with a 3.54 ERA in nine home starts. Chen will have to be careful with Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira who has hit six home runs off him in just 16 at-bats.
