LA Dodgers Open MLB Odds Series at Milwaukee Brewers

Veteran southpaws go at it Monday night in Milwaukee where the surging Brewers begin a 4-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers will attempt to do what had only been done 15 times this season heading into Sunday, and that is beat the Brewers at Miller Park. Milwaukee was -185 to complete a sweep of the Pirates on Sunday behind Shaun Marcum. The Brew Crew had already secured their fifth consecutive series victory at home heading into that contest and have dropped only four home series all season, the most recent July 4-6 vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Milwaukee had won 15 of 17 before Sunday's battle with the Bucs, and manager Ron Roenicke has to be pleased that it's not just one facet of his squad or another getting the job done. Brewers hurlers allowed two runs or less in 10 of those contests while the lineup plated five or more runs 11 times to help build their lead in the NL Central standings to five games over St. Louis.

It's the second and final meeting of the 2011 schedule between the clubs following a split in Los Angeles in mid-May. Both of those contests went 'under' the MLB betting totals. The Dodgers swept the Brewers in Milwaukee last season and come in having won seven of the last nine games played at Miller Park.

Don Mattingly will give the ball to Ted Lilly (10-14, 4.71) for the series opener with Lilly no stranger to the venue or foe having spent several seasons with the rival Chicago Cubs before being dealt to LA in 2010. He made one start here after joining the Dodgers last July, picking up the win as a 125 road favorite. Lilly's last five outings at Miller Park have resulted in four team victories with his ERA a sparkling 2.22 in 32 1/3 innings.

Two quality starts this month by Lilly have not produced winning results. Los Angeles is 4-7 in his 11 assignments away from Chavez Ravine this year. Working in his favor is the fact the Brewers have struggled a bit against left-handers, winning just 13 of 27 matchups.

Then again, the Dodgers haven't exactly dominated southpaws in 2011 themselves, splitting their 32 games against lefty starters. They'll be facing one who is a former teammate when Roenicke sends Randy Wolf (13-11, 3.48) to the mound.

Wolf's 11 Miller Park assignments have resulted in eight Milwaukee triumphs. He'll be trying to stop a two-game losing skid against the Dodgers after dropping a game to them in Los Angeles on May 17 as an even-money road 'dog.

Game 1 is slated to get underway at 5:10 p.m. (PT) on what should be a nice evening in Milwaukee. Clear skies and a first-pitch temp in the mid-70s should mean the roof at Miller Park will be open.

The series continues Tuesday with Los Angeles expected to send Chad Billingsley to the mound opposite Yovani Gallardo of the Brewers.

Texas Rangers Visit Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels and the Texas Rangers begin a pivotal 4-game series Monday at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, and MLB bettors aren't going to want to miss this clash between AL West leaders.

The first game of this set gets underway at 7:05 p.m. (PT), and there will be local TV coverage on FOX Sports Southwest and KCOP. If there is a pitching matchup in this series that the Rangers should dominate, this is the one. Alexi Ogando (11-5, 3.22 ERA) will be taking on Garrett Richards (0-1, 10.80 ERA).

We have to give Richards some credit though, as he has only made one start in his MLB career. He allowed six runs in his first start last week against the New York Yankees, but he deserves some accolades for lasting five innings in the Bronx versus one of the best offenses in the game.

The 23-year-old stormed through the Angels farm system after being a supplemental round draft choice just two years ago. From Rookie League in 2009, Richards made it through both High-A and Low-A ball, and he started this season with Double-A Arkansas.

He went 12-2 there in 21 starts and posted a 3.06 ERA. The righty has 279 strikeouts against 87 walks in his minor league career, spanning 55 starts. He had a pair of walks and a pair of Ks against the Yanks last week.

Texas' bats have been fantastic of late, scoring at least five runs in eight out of nine games. Richards definitely could have his work cut out for him when facing the Rangers, who rank third in baseball in run production at 5.12 runs per game.

It wasn't all that long ago that we were talking about the first career appearance for Ogando either. He debuted last year and pitched like a house of fire, posting a 1.30 ERA and a 1.13 WIHP in 41 2/3-innings of relief work.

This year though, Ogando has started all 22 of his games and has 11 wins to show for it. The fireballing righty has 100 strikeouts in 134 innings, and owns a solid 1.10 WHIP. Batters are only hitting .227 against him.

Ogando was lit up in his most recent start against the Seattle Mariners. He allowed eight hits and six runs in 2 2/3-innings of work in arguably the worst start of his career. The last time he pitched against these Angels (July 19) was a significantly different story. Ogando threw eight scoreless innings and struck out five, earning a victory here at the Big A in Anaheim as 145 road chalk on the MLB odds.

The Halos enter this series with a slender 5-4 edge in the season series. Anaheim took two out of three from the Rangers in their most recent outing in July, the one loss when facing Ogando.

The Angels have won seven straight series at home dating back to the middle of June, and they are going to be happy to be back at Angel Stadium this week after a six-game East Coast road trip.

If the MLB trends hold up on Monday, expect a relatively low scoring affair. Five of the last seven have failed to reach the 'total', and 'under' bettors are 11-5-2 in the last 18 duels.

San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves MLB Betting Preview

The San Francisco Giants didn’t expect to be thinking about the NL wild-card race, but that’s exactly what’s happening as they start a 4-game series Monday night at the Atlanta Braves.

ESPN2 will have the national broadcast from Turner Field at 4:00 p.m. (PT). The pitching matchup is young Madison Bumgarner for the visitors opposite veteran Tim Hudson.

The Giants (65-55) split the first two games of their weekend series at Florida, with Sunday’s game still pending. They’re 4-11 in their last 15 and can blame the offense. The lineup is averaging 2.27 runs per game over that span, scoring four total runs on Friday and Saturday.

San Francisco trails surprising Arizona (winners of five straight) by two games in the NL West, and is five back of Atlanta for the wild card.

The Giants have the second-best ERA in baseball (3.16), with Bumgarner (3.53 ERA) slightly above. He’s pitched much better than his 7-11 record indicates, including seven shutout innings (four hits) at home against Pittsburgh last Tuesday (6-0 win). The 22-year-old lefty has overcome an early sophomore slump to have 17 quality starts in his last 20 outings. He has a solid 8.30 strikeout rate for the year and an OPS allowed of just .676.

Bumgarner did struggle in his last road start, July 30 at Cincinnati. He surrendered seven runs (five earned) over four innings in the 7-2 defeat. His road ERA (3.06) for the year is better than at home (3.94).

This is Bumgarner’s second start versus the Braves this year. He only lasted 2 2/3 innings at home against them (four runs, three earned) while still struggling in April. His one career start at Turner Field was in last year’s NLDS, getting the win in a 3-2 victory after allowing two runs over six innings.

The Braves (70-50) would lead any other NL division, but trail elite Philadelphia by 8.5 games in the NL East standings. They did struggle after the All-Star break at 9-10, but are 7-2 in their last nine pending Sunday, looking solid for the wild-card with the 5-game cushion.

The ‘over’ is 9-2 for Atlanta in August, with team scoring (5.55 runs per game) increasing along with ERA (4.85). Dan Uggla’s 33-game hitting streak has been the big news.

Hudson (12-7, 3.18 ERA) is 14 years older than Bumgarner at age 36, but has a lot left in the tank. He’s also been hot of late with a 7-1 record (2.08 ERA) in his last 10 starts. The ‘under’ is 4-1 in his last five.

The right-hander has been solid all year at Turner Field (2.71 ERA), although Atlanta has won just eight of his 14 starts. The team won 13 of his 18 regular season home starts (2.48 ERA) last season.

Hudson faced the Giants in April, surrendering two runs over 8 2/3 innings in a 5-2 road win. He had a great ERA (.81) in three starts against them last year, including one unearned over seven innings at home in the NLDS. Atlanta still lost 3-2.

The Giants are just 3-13 in their last 16 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. Hudson’s is 1.09. The Giants have also started slowly lately, going 0-7 in opening games of a series.

The Braves swept the first series against San Fran out West in May. This is the first home series since the NLDS and the ‘under’ is 7-1 in the last eight meetings in Atlanta.

Carlos Beltran (wrist) was doubtful Sunday after missing five games. He’s struggled since coming from the Mets (.617 OPS) after expecting to be an offensive catalyst. Atlanta catcher Brian McCann (oblique) was expected back Sunday after missing 16 contests.

Weather should be clear and around 80 degrees. Tuesday’s pitching matchup is Tommy Hanson versus Jonathan Sanchez.

            MLB Betting Notes

            August 15, 2011

The Houston Astros are not only giving all their star players away, they’re giving away cash on a nightly basis from the play from their current Triple-A roster. Yet, for some reason, bettors aren’t jumping on all of their opponents like they do in betting the Red Sox, Phillies and Yankees to win on a regular basis.
If we look at the entire body of play on the season, the Astros’ 83 losses are five games ahead of the Phillies wins as well as 10 games ahead of the Red Sox and Yankees. The high money-line against the Astros scares off a lot people, but betting against them on the run-line has proved to be one of the hottest bets in baseball next to the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Astros are 14-19 in one-run games this season which is the third lowest amount of one-run games in the NL behind the Dodgers (17-15) and Pirates (15-17). Since the All-Star break the Astros have been allowing clubs to pummel them with great consistency going 8-21. Of those 21 losses, 18 have been by two runs or more.

Over that span, their best pitchers have been Bud Norris and Wandy Rodriguez, who the Astros have combined to go 5-7 with in their starts. This leaves you Brett Myers, Randy Sosa and Jordan Lyles to pick against on a regular basis while also getting tremendous value against them on the run-line.

Most of the Astros’ splits from the money-line to the run-line are over a dollar. Their opponents may be a minus-215 favorite (Bet $215 to win $100), but the run-line price will be only be minus-105 (Bet $105 to win $100) depending on whether their at home or on the road. Take this in comparison with the Phillies, Red Sox and Yankees on the road where their run-line splits are considerably lower just because of the price having been built in due to the popularity of those teams.

I had thought when pitcher J.A, Happ was sent down that the party would be over because he was so reliable to bet against, but Lyles made a name for himself and been a pretty reliable bet-against. Lyles made his debut on May 31 and beat the Cubs at Wrigley, allowing only two runs in seven innings of work in Houston’s 7-3 win. Since then, the Astros have lost 12 of 13 games with him on the mound.

Two-Horse Race in the NL West

The most interesting race going in baseball right now is the National League West, with Arizona holding a two-game lead over the defending world champions San Francisco Giants. SF has played its ’torture’ game of beating everyone by one-run (28-16) this season to perfection until about three weeks ago and now the style started working against the club.

The timely hits weren’t coming for the Giants and their starting pitching wasn’t holding teams in the same fashion they had the last two seasons. They were hitting a few home runs here and there, but had no one on base. They set a MLB record with 21 straight home runs being solo shots; that’s all-time, which kind of shows the lapse they're in right now.

Outfielder Carlos Beltran has done nothing since his arrival via trade from the New York Mets, a date that coincides with the Giants demise. While all this is going on, the D-Backs just keep playing energized baseball under the leadership of baseball's biggest gamer, Kirk Gibson. They’ve been riding their Cy Young candidate Ian Kennedy’s back since the All-Star break and he’s performed well, winning seven straight starts.

Arizona gets a major test this week to see just how good they really are when they play two of the three teams with better records then them on the road. After facing Philadelphia, the squad heads to Georgia for another three-game road set against Atlanta.

            Strange Brew

One of the most amazing streaks in baseball continued over the weekend as the Pirates got swept again in Milwaukee giving the Bucs losses in 34 of their last 36 games there. The Pirates are 0-8 this season against the Brewers and will face off again next week in Pittsburgh for a four-game set.

The Brewers continue to roll as they’ve won 16 of 18 games and have a nice five-game lead over the Cardinals in the NL Central. Of those 16 wins, 13 have been by two-runs or more.

              Run Line & ML Standings

              August 15, 2011

As the 2011 MLB campaign moves into mid-August, we're starting to see more pronounced streaks, both on the winning and losing sides. And that applies to Money line and Run Line results as well.

Numerous teams are in the midst of exaggerated upticks and downticks at the moment. In the National league since August 3, no team is providing better value on the Run Line than Milwaukee, +825 that span, with the surprising Cubs not far behind at +602. On the other hand, Florida (-807 since August 3), Pittsburgh (-677 that span), and the Mets (-475) have been in quicksand. In the AL, Minnesota (-563 since August 3) and Baltimore (-540 that span) have really hit the skids. Overall, the top Money Line teams for the entire season are both in the NL (Philadelphia at +2101, and Arizona at +1787). On the bottom end, Houston (-3630) continues to be lapped by the field.

On the Run Line side, some of the same teams are also in freefall mode at the moment, none more so than the Twins (-1401 since August 3). Florida (-690 since August 3) and Houston again (-633 that span) are also sliding. A couple of unsuspecting sides have been Run Line winners over the past eleven days, including San Diego (+665) and Seattle (+580). Unlike the Money Line, the top two Run Line teams for the season are both in the AL, Texas (+1674) and the Yankees (+1484).

Following are the complete MLB Money Line and Run Line standings through games of August 14, with the recent numbers since August 3 also included.

Burnett tries to snap winless skid in K.C.

NEW YORK YANKEES (72-46, +10.8 Units)

at KANSAS CITY ROYALS (50-71, -12.2 Units)

First pitch: Monday, 8:10 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -150, Kansas City +140, Total: 9.5

The Yankees begin a seven-game Midwest road trip, streaking towards the lead in the AL East by winning 11 of 15. New York will face a battered Royals team on Monday night, who have lost eight of 10.

The Yanks will start A.J. Burnett, who is winless in his past seven starts (0-3, 6.00 ERA) and 0-8 with a 7.19 ERA in 13 career August outings as a Yankee. New York has been a horrible bet in night games (-11.6 Units, 39-38) and has not been very effective after a day off (6-8 this season, 27-30 in past three years). Kansas City has won four of the past six meetings with the Yanks, and is 28-25 this season when the total is 9 to 9.5. Expect KANSAS CITY to keep the August woes going for Burnett and handle the Yankees at home.

The FoxSheets provide a four-star reason to side with the Royals on Monday.

Play On - Home teams (KANSAS CITY) - bad offensive team (<=4.5 runs/game) against a decent starting pitcher (ERA=4.20 to 4.70)-AL, with an overused bullpen that pitches more than 3.2 innings per game. (76-41 since 1997.) (65%, +49 units. Rating = 4*).

Burnett (8-9, 4.60 ERA) has allowed at least three runs in each of the seven games during his winless skid. Last Tuesday he fanned six in six innings, but allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks in a no-decision versus the Angels. Burnett is 3-3 with a 2.52 ERA in nine career starts against the Royals, including a stellar 1.03 ERA and .140 opponents’ BA in four starts against them in a Yankees uniform. Curtis Granderson (.275 BA, 33 HR, 94 RBI) has been red hot, homering five times and driving in eight runs over the past five games.

Pitching for the Royals is 27-year-old Felipe Paulino (1-4, 3.45 ERA), who will be facing the Yankees for the first time in his career. Since the All-Star break, the Royals have lost all five of Paulino’s starts, despite a quality 3.56 ERA over this span. Paulino’s run support has been historically bad with the Royals only scoring 2.90 runs, which is the second lowest of any pitcher with at least 45 starts since 1974. Paulino left his last start at Tampa Bay with stiffness in his back, but prior to the injury pitched well, allowing one run through five innings.

Giants open 4-game set in Atlanta

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (66-55, +3.9 Units)

at ATLANTA BRAVES (70-51, +6.8 Units)

First pitch: Monday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
Line: Atlanta -150, San Francisco +140, Total: 7

The Giants are coming off two consecutive wins while the Braves are coming off two straight losses as the two playoff contenders square off in the opener of a four-game series Monday night in Atlanta.

The Braves are currently comfortably atop the Wild Card race in the NL, four games ahead of the Giants. San Francisco in the hunt for not only the Wild Card, but more probably the NL West where it sits just two games behind the Diamondbacks. Former top prospect Madison Bumgarner takes the hill for the Giants, looking to stay sharp after two straight gems (15 IP, 10 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 19 K). Considering San Francisco is 7-2 in the left-hander’s past nine starts, and the Braves have the lowest batting average in baseball against lefties (.224), play on underdog SAN FRANCISCO in this game.

The FoxSheets provide two more trends backing the Giants.

Play On - All underdogs with a money line of +100 to +150 (SAN FRANCISCO) - allowing 3.8 or less runs/game on the season (NL) against opponent with a hot starting pitcher- WHIP <= 1.000 over his last 3 starts. (50-31 over the last 5 seasons.) (61.7%, +29.8 units. Rating = 2*).

ATLANTA is 6-14 (30.0%, -13.0 Units) against the money line vs. an NL starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.250 to 1.350 this season. The average score was ATLANTA 3.8, OPPONENT 5.4 - (Rating = 2*).

One thing to watch out for is the presence of Carlos Beltran in the Giants lineup. He hasn’t played since Aug. 7 after suffering a wrist injury and is not expected to be in the starting lineup on Monday.

Bumgarner (7-11, 3.53 ERA) has earned three wins over his past five starts with 38 strikeouts in 34.2 innings over this span. He’s extremely tough against lefties who have a paltry .269 on-base percentage against him, and have yet to hit a home run in 115 at-bats off him this season. Hopefully for the Giants, he can tame the scorching-hot Dan Uggla, whose long hitting streak finally ended Sunday at 33 games. The Braves’ 2B hit .377 with 15 HR during the streak, but has struggled against lefties this year however, hitting .184. This is just another reason to play on Bumgarner and the Giants.

Tim Hudson (12-7, 3.18 ERA) takes the mound for Atlanta Monday and is always dependable for a solid outing. He’s thrown 10 straight quality starts, going 7-1 with a 2.07 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over this span. Despite this consistent excellence, the Braves are a mere 13-11 (-1.2 Units) in Hudson’s starts this year. However, in five outings against San Francisco dating back to 2007, Hudson is 3-0 with a 2.23 ERA and 0.84 WHIP, throwing at least eight innings in four of the five starts.

Jets open preseason Monday night in Houston

                    NEW YORK JETS

                    at HOUSTON TEXANS

                    Kickoff: Monday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
                    Line: Houston -3, Total: 34.5

The always confident Jets will see their first live action of 2011 when they visit Houston for their preseason opener on Monday night.

The Jets are unlikely to show much in this game. The one unit that underwent major changes is the receiving corps, but key addition Plaxico Burress is 34, hasn’t played since 2008 and is dealing with a nagging ankle injury. He’s unlikely to see major action, and head coach Rex Ryan won’t show a whole lot of Gang Green’s exotic blitz schemes. Considering how sharp and motivated Texans back-up QB Matt Leinart has looked in camp, HOUSTON is the pick on Monday.

The Texans will be short at running back, as three of their top runners have suffered minor hamstring injuries. All-Pro RB Arian Foster is likely to sit for precautionary reasons, which would leave the bulk of the workload for Derrick Ward, who is healthy. Steve Slaton and Ben Tate will work in if they can run with their injured hammies.

Expect both team’s franchise quarterbacks—Houston’s Matt Schaub and Mark Sanchez for the Jets—to play sparingly. Leinart should get ample playing time for the Texans, while Mark Brunell and rookie Greg McElroy figure to see a lot of time for New York.

While the Jets are trotting out a re-vamped receiving corps—Burress and 37-year-old Derrick Mason are in, Jerricho Cotchery and Brad Smith are out—the Texans have overhauled their secondary. After being torched consistently through the air last year, they signed CB Johnathan Joseph away from Cincinnati and Danieal Manning, one of the league’s best safeties in pass coverage, from Chicago. If second-year CB Kareem Jackson progresses, this unit should be much improved.

Houston will also have a new look in its front seven. With former Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips taking over as defensive coordinator, the team will play a 3-4 front this year. Mario Williams will become a supersized linebacker, while rookie J.J. Watt is expected to step in immediately on the defensive line.

The Jets did little to upgrade their defensive personnel, missing out on CB Nnamdi Asomugha. But they retained CB Antonio Cromartie and remain elite against the run.

The Texans were 1-3 SU in last year’s preseason while the Jets went 2-2. The Jets have won all five of the teams’ regular-season matchups, including a 30-27 comeback victory in New York last November.
