New York Yankees Host LA Angels On ESPN

NOTE: The Los Angeles Angels called up Garrett Richards from their Double-A club in Arkansas for Wednesday's start in New York.

A battle of second-place teams continues Wednesday night in the Bronx where the New York Yankees host the Los Angeles Angels. ESPN will broadcast the contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. (PT).

Weather and shifts in both starting rotations make the pitching matchup for Game 2 a bit of a mystery. Tuesday's series opener was slated to be a mound clash between the Halos' Dan Haren and New York's AJ Burnett. The Yankees were carrying -120 MLB odds into that game with an 8½-run total.

Rain was falling in the New York City area Tuesday, however, meaning a postponement could push Game 1 starters into Wednesday when skies are expected to be clear. Assuming there is no cancellation, Game 2 should find lefty Hisanori Takahashi (0-0, 3.35) on the hill for the Angels against Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova (13-5, 3.81).

New York is a perfect 7-0 in Nova's last seven trips to the mound, a span that dates to mid-June. This will be his third assignment since being called back up on July 30 and Nova has been extremely tough in the previous two (2-0, 1.84, 16:1 K:BB).

Nova's 7-game winning stretch started following a loss to the Angels in Anaheim on June 3. He was +125 on the road with Jered Weaver winning the 3-2 duel.

Halos manager Mike Scioscia is pulling Takahashi (0-0, 3.35) into the rotation after demoting Joel Pineiro to the bullpen this past weekend. Pineiro has been lit up since the all-star break – 15.23 ERA, 2.69 WHIP, 5 HR – and is 1-3 with a 5.96 in his last four starts vs. the Yanks.

Takahashi, who has made 43 relief appearances this season, made two starts against Yankees in 2010 while pitching for the Mets and worked six scoreless innings in both assignments. He was a big 180 'dog on the closing MLB betting ticker last June at Yankee Stadium when the Mets won, 4-0.

The southpaw saw the Yanks in relief for just a third of an inning during the June series and kept them off the board once again. Takahashi's most recent outing came in relief of Pineiro a week ago, and it was also his longest appearance of the season (2 2/3 IP, 42 pitches). My best guess is something around a 75-80 pitch limit for him on Wednesday, meaning five innings is the most Scioscia is expecting, six innings if he's lucky.

It will be interesting to see if Scioscia makes the call for Pineiro should Takahashi struggle early. The Halos have a pretty decent bullpen and they will have had Monday off, so everyone should be available assuming Haren can go deep in Tuesday's contest.

Los Angeles is without Weaver this series while he serves a 6-game suspension following an ejection in his July 31 assignment at Detroit.

The Yankees took two of three from the Angels when the clubs met in Anaheim and had won nine of the last 12 regular season meetings in the Bronx heading into Tuesday's battle.

New York is closer to seeing Alex Rodriguez (knee surgery) return from the disabled list, but he'll remain out of action at least through this week. The Angels are not reporting any new injuries.

The clubs are scheduled to close things out with a Thursday matinee when Tyler Chatwood is expected to oppose Bartolo Colon.

Boston Red Sox At Minnesota Twins MLB Betting Preview

The Boston Red Sox try to continue their stellar road play when they finish a 3-game series at the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night.

First pitch from Target Field will be at 5:10 p.m. (PT).

The Red Sox (71-43) look like a shoo-in for a playoff spot and much of it has to do with play outside of Fenway Park. They have the best road record in baseball (34-21) even after a miserable 0-7 start. That’s translated into +9.4 units.

Boston kept its road momentum going with an 8-6 comeback win in the Monday series opener. It was thought the Sox could have a letdown after another draining Yankees series, but the league’s best offense (5.48 runs per game) wouldn’t let it happen.

Tuesday night’s result is still pending with Boston a 130 favorite behind the newly acquired Erik Bedard. The total was 8 ½-runs. Boom-or-bust starter Francisco Liriano was on the mound for Minnesota.

Jon Lester (11-5, 3.23 ERA) will start Wednesday. He was pushed back after the All-Star break with a strained lat, but has pitched well in the three starts since (2.79 ERA). Unfortunately, Boston went just 1-2, including losing (3-2) at home against the Yankees last Friday.

The 27-year-old lefty has been great (8-1, 2.75 ERA) away this season. However, the ‘over’ is 5-2-1 in his last eight road starts with Boston scoring 7.24 runs per game.

Lester hasn’t faced the Twins this year and is 1-2 with a 4.67 ERA lifetime against them. He’s 0-2 with a 6.61 ERA combined at the Metrodome and Target Field, with Boston losing all three starts.

Minnesota is 7-3 in its last 10 home starts against a left-handed starter, 18-18 versus a lefty overall this year.

The Twins (51-64) have lost five games in a row, with the last four coming at home. They made a run in June (17-9) and the first half of July (10-3), but it appears their playoff hopes are over, even in the weak AL Central.

Nick Blackburn (7-9, 4.58 ERA) will oppose Lester. He’s been awful (0-3, 11.68 ERA) in his last three starts. That includes issuing 11 walks in his last two at Oakland and home to the White Sox (9 2/3 total innings).

He has just two quality starts in his last eight outings (8.15 ERA). The ‘over’ is 6-2 in those starts.

The 29-year-old right-hander has a better ERA at home (3.84), but that number is also up over his last five starts (6.08 ERA).

This is Blackburn’s second start against the Red Sox this year. He allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings at Fenway back in May, getting the no-decision in a 2-1 loss. He’s made four starts against them since 2008, sporting a very respectable 2.77 ERA.

Minnesota was happy to score six runs on Monday. It had scored three runs or fewer in seven of its prior eight games.

Boston has won the last four games against Minnesota after dropping the season opener. The ‘over’ is 3-2 this year after the ‘under’ was 6-0-2 in the previous eight.

Umpire Ted Barrett will call balls and strikes. The road team is 7-1 in his last eight games behind home plate. Boston is 25-9 in the last 34 games he’s been behind the dish.

Weather should be beautiful, clear and in the 70s. Both teams are off Thursday with Minnesota traveling to Cleveland and Boston heading all the way to the West Coast to face Seattle.

Worley And Phillies Close Set At Los Angeles Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies are running away with the National League East Division and will likely continue to extend their lead in facing the subpar Los Angeles Dodgers. Wednesday’s first pitch for the series finale is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. (PT) at Dodger Stadium.

Philadelphia extended its lead to 8½ games over the Atlanta Braves with a 5-3 victory against the Dodgers Monday night in the series opener. The victory marked the Phillies' 10th in 11 games and their 14th of the last 21 meetings in the series, outscoring the Dodgers by a 98-73 margin.

The club has had little trouble matching up with teams out of the NL West, compiling an 81-43 record against the division since the start of the 2008 season.

Rookie Vance Worley (8-1, 2.35 ERA) has earned a spot in arguably the best pitching rotation in baseball and has led the club to nine consecutive victories. He tallied a 9-2 road win over the Giants last time out, giving up two runs and seven hits over seven frames.

Worley has been solid in eight road appearances (six starts) during the 2011 campaign, entering with a 4-1 mark and 2.52 ERA, surrendering just three home runs in 39 1/3 innings. He has won four consecutive decisions away from Citizens Bank Park.

He will be facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career and will try to solve his daytime problems in the process. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA in three outings under the sun compared to a perfect 7-0 mark and 1.60 ERA in 12 nighttime appearances (10 starts).

Total bettors will find that the ‘over’ is 4-1 in his last five starts overall.

Los Angeles has a large mountain to climb in hopes of getting back into the playoff race, dropping 10 games back in the NL West standings after Monday’s loss. The Dodgers came into the series one of the hottest home teams in baseball, winning nine of 13.

The club managed to collect 13 hits in the series-opening loss, with All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp singling twice. He failed to drive in a run in those opportunities and has gone five games without an RBI, which is surprising as he ranks third in the league with 84 RBI.

Chad Billingsley (10-9, 4.17 ERA) has fallen into quite a pattern by alternating wins and losses over his last seven outings. He comes in off a 7-4 road win over the Diamondbacks, giving up three runs and seven hits over six innings.

The right-hander has performed well at home this year, posting a winning 5-4 record and 2.88 ERA, as opponents are hitting just .226 against him. In five career starts versus the Phillies, Billingsley is 1-2 with a 3.19 ERA, including a 2-0 loss in Philadelphia in his only start against them last year (6 IP, 2 ER).

Home plate umpire Laz Diaz has seen an average of 6.78 runs scored in his 23 games behind the plate this year, leading the ‘under’ to a 14-8-1 mark.

Weather forecasts suggest a perfect day to play baseball, with game-time temperatures in the low-70s and a southwesterly breeze of 5-10 mph (out to center).
