Pittsburgh Pirates Battle Bumgarner, SF Giants

A pair of teams that have hit the skids at the wrong time of year are going to engage in MLB betting warfare on Tuesday night at AT&T Park where the San Francisco Giants host the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Bucs were once the best team for baseball bettors, up over 15 units on the season. Since that point though, Pittsburgh has stumbled 10 straight times and fallen clear out of the NL postseason picture, and it will be a struggle just to get back to the .500 mark by season's end.

San Fran is still in a dogfight in the NL West, clawing with the Arizona Diamondbacks for first place in a division that very well could only end up getting one postseason slot.

These two meet Tuesday for the second of their 3-game set at 7:15 p.m. (PT) with live television coverage on ROOT Sports TV and Comcast Sports Bay Area.

The pitching staff has been absolutely crippled over these two weeks for Pittsburgh. The unit has allowed at least 10 runs in four of its last 10 games, and at least five runs in nine of the 10. Allowing 8.20 runs per game at any stretch of the season isn't good, especially over 10 games, seven of which came at home against the lowly San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs.

James McDonald will try to stop the bleeding on Tuesday night.

The righty doesn't really have great credentials of late, allowing nine runs and 14 hits in his last 12 innings of work, including five home runs. He is 7-5 on the campaign and has a 4.23 ERA, but things could be significantly worse based upon his splits.

McDonald is letting batters hit .275 and issuing far too many walks – 54 in 121 1/3-innings of work.

Earlier this year, McDonald earned the one win for the Pirates in a 3-game series against the Giants, throwing six shutout innings and allowing just four hits in the process.

Perhaps the better panacea for Pirates pitching ills is just how bad San Francisco's offense has been. The Giants have averaged just 2.24 runs per game over the last 17 games, scoring more than four runs just once. To no surprise, the team is just 6-11 in this stretch.

You don't have to remind San Francisco's Tuesday pitcher, Madison Bumgarner, just how bad the G-Men have been with their sticks. They're averaging just 2.9 runs per game with him on the mound this season.

Bumgarner is 6-11, but he has the credentials to be an 11-6 pitcher. He has a K/BB ratio of nearly 4/1 and is doing a great job keeping the ball in the park, allowing just seven homers in 23 starts. The southpaw also has a 3.71 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.

As if things couldn't get any worse for the Pirates, not only has the Jolly Roger not been raised since the trade deadline, but they are just 3-10 in their last 13 tries against the Giants to boot.

Expect a cool, brisk night in the Bay Area on Tuesday. Temperatures will be in the low-50s and skies will be clear, but there should be wind out of the west around 15 mph (out to center).

LA Angels At New York Yankees MLB Betting Preview

The New York Yankees begin a 6-game homestand Tuesday night with a 3-game set against their west coast rivals the Los Angeles Angels. Game time is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. (PT).

The Yankees just finished a quick road trip to Boston where they dropped two of the three games, with their sole win coming off a start from their 38-year-old starter Bartolo Colon as a 135 underdog. New York began the week trailing the Red Sox by a game in the AL East Division.

The Angels also started the week just a game out of the lead in the AL West standings. Los Angeles recently demoted starting pitcher Joel Pineiro to the bullpen, and the decision very well could have been made based on the difficulty of their upcoming series in the Bronx against New York. Pineiro is 1-3 with a 5.96 in his last four starts vs. the Yanks.

The Angels will be sending Dan Haren (12-6, 2.81) to the mound Tuesday night against either A.J. Burnett (8-9, 4.54) or Ivan Nova (10-4, 3.81) for New York. The Yankees used starting pitcher Phil Hughes in one inning of relief on Sunday against the Red Sox and Hughes ended up picking up the loss after recording only one out.

After Yankees manager Joe Girardi made the decision to use Hughes in the bullpen on Sunday, it left the decision of who to start on Tuesday up in the air. Burnett would be pitching with five days off between starts while Nova would be working on the more conventional 4-day break.

The Angels have had recent struggles trying to come up with wins at Yankee Stadium, going 3-9 in their last 12 meetings and the recipe to turn around that disaster just might be Haren.

Haren has held the Yankees lineup to just a .246 batting average (37/150) in his career and has allowed only two earned runs in his last two road starts (16 2/3 IP) against the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians.

This will be Haren's first appearance in the Bronx since July 1, 2007. The right-hander has a stingy 0.97 WHIP on the season with the Halos winning 14 of his 24 starts to date. Haren seems like the perfect candidate to stroll into New York and pick up a victory for the Angels in the first game of this series.

Los Angeles only managed to score four runs in their 3-game series against Seattle this weekend, with all three of the games going 'under' the total. The Angels are 7-6 this season on the road when Haren takes the mound, and with their other ace Jered Weaver ineligible for this series while serving a suspension, Haren's start on Tuesday is all the more important.

New York was on an 8-game winning streak prior to their two losses at the end of the Red Sox series this weekend, and will try and regain that momentum against the Angels.

The weather forecast for Tuesday night in the Bronx calls for scattered thunderstorms and very high humidity with a temperature around 73 degrees.

Milwaukee Brewers Travel For Big MLB Betting Series In St. Louis

The National League Central has become a two-team race as the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals begin a critical three-game series Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. (PT).

Milwaukee enters with a three-game lead over the Cards after a weekend sweep of the Houston Astros, scoring 22 runs over a span of three games. The Brewers own the top home record in the game at 41-15, but the series sweep in Houston only improved their road mark to 24-35.

Tuesday’s contest will serve as the 10th meeting of the year between these division rivals and Milwaukee holds a 6-3 overall advantage, but dropped two of three in St. Louis from May 6-8.

Shaun Marcum (10-3, 3.58 ERA) has won three straight decisions, but is coming off a poor no-decision effort last time out against the Cardinals at Miller Park. He allowed six runs and seven hits over six frames in a 8-7 loss.

Marcum has made two career starts against St. Louis, entering with a 1-0 mark and 6.23 ERA. He has fared well against slugger Albert Pujols, limiting him to just one hit in five plate appearances.

Total players will be interested in the ‘under’ being 7-1 in his last eight road starts, which fits nicely with the last five meetings in St. Louis falling below the posted number.

St. Louis finished its seven-game road trip with a 5-2 record, including wins in all four games at Sun Life Stadium against the Florida Marlins. The Cardinals probably didn’t want leave South Florida willingly due to their 45-27 all-time mark at the venue.

The team will try to gain ground at home where it has posted a 29-24 record in 2011, but will have to overcome recent failures at Busch Stadium against its current opponent. The Brewers have won 19 of the last 30 meetings dating to the start of the 2008 campaign.

Edwin Jackson (8-8, 4.11 ERA) will be making his third start in a Cardinals uniform and will try to make fans forget his last appearance. He allowed a season-high 10 runs (eight earned) and 14 hits over seven innings in a 10-5 road loss to the Brewers.

The right-hander managed to register a 9-2 win over the Cubs in his only start at Busch Stadium this year on July 29, surrendering just a single run and seven hits over seven frames. In three lifetime starts versus the Brewers, Jackson has a losing 1-2 mark and 5.68 ERA, allowing them to hit for a combined .307 average.

St. Louis has performed extremely well against teams with a winning record when playing host, winning 39 of the last 58 games in that situation.

Weather forecasts suggest game-time temperatures in the mid-80s with a northwesterly breeze of 5-10 mph (left to right). The Cardinals have won five of six home games this year in those conditions, averaging 5.33 runs to 2.67 for opponents.

Phillies try to stay red-hot in L.A.

            PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (75-40, +19.8 Units)

at LOS ANGELES DODGERS (52-62, -14.6 Units)

First pitch: Monday, 10:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Philadelphia -170, Los Angeles +160, Total: 6.5

The Phillies are sizzling hot, winning 10 of 11 to go 35 games above .500. Philadelphia also has a commanding 8½-game lead in the NL East over the very good Atlanta Braves, who have the second-best record in the National League. Los Angeles rattled off 13 hits in Monday night’s series opener, but went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, and lost 5-3. The series continues Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Phils will send one of their many aces to the mound Tuesday, as Cliff Lee has dominated the Dodgers in three career starts against them, posting an amazing 0.40 ERA. Philadelphia is also the NL’s best road team (34-22, +6.4 Units) and the Phillies love pitching duels, going 35-16 (.686) when the total is seven or less. Los Angeles has not defended its home turf too well, going 28-32 (-10.6 Units) at home, while posting a poor 18-25 mark (.419) when playing against a team with a winning record. The -170 line is a steep price, but with the Phillies rolling and Lee likely to dominate L.A. again, take PHILADELPHIA to win again.

This highly-rated FoxSheets trend also backs the Phillies.

Play Against - All underdogs with a money line of +125 to +175 (L.A. DODGERS) - bad offensive team (<=4.1 runs/game) against a good starting pitcher (ERA<=3.70) (NL), with a decent bullpen whose WHIP is 1.350 to 1.450 on the season. (81-26 over the last 5 seasons.) (75.7%, +40.3 units. Rating = 3*).

PHILADELPHIA is 60-27 (69.0%, +26.9 Units) against the money line vs. an average bullpen whose ERA is 3.75 to 4.50 over the last 2 seasons. The average score was PHILADELPHIA 4.8, OPPONENT 3.7 - (Rating = 2*).

Many expected Philadelphia to be the best team in the National League and up to now have lived up to it. The Phillies look to move 36 games over .500 for the first time in 34 years. They do have a couple of injury concerns, as 3B Placido Polanco underwent an MRI exam on Monday and was diagnosed with a chronic sports hernia and will be reevaluated on Friday. OF Shane Victorino appealed his suspension on Monday night while going 3-for-5 with a homer and three runs scored.

Although Cliff Lee (11-7, 2.96 ERA) had a lackluster July, going 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in five starts, he started off August on the right foot. Lee tossed a seven-hit shutout at San Francisco, striking out eight and walking none. He has absolutely owned the Dodgers in three starts against them. After getting a no-decision in 2008 (7.1 IP, 1 ER), he shut them out for eight innings in the 2009 NLCS Game 3 and blanked them for seven frames on June 6. In the three outings, Lee has a 0.81 WHIP, 23 strikeouts and just two walks.

Ted Lilly (7-11, 4.86 ERA) gets the ball on Tuesday and is coming off a loss in which he threw six innings, allowing only one run on four hits and striking out seven. Lilly is 0-5 with a 6.55 ERA in his past six starts against the Phillies, but pitched well the last time he opposed Lee, throwing six innings and allowing two runs on five hits which unfortunately ended in a 3-1 loss. The Dodgers could use their RBI man Matt Kemp (.317 BA, 26 HR, 84 RBI) to start driving in runs again, as he has not knocked in a run in five straight games.

Liberty seek first win vs. Storm since 2008

              SEATTLE STORM (12-9)

              at NEW YORK LIBERTY (12-9)

              Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -3.5, Total: 145

Seattle looks to bounce back from a disastrous start to their mini East Coast road swing when it visits New York Tuesday night.

The Storm have beaten the Liberty five straight times, but this hasn’t been the same team without reigning MVP Lauren Jackson (hip). They had their three-game winning streak snapped in embarrassing fashion, being blown out 70-53 in Atlanta on Sunday while turning it over a season-high 27 times. Seattle is just 2-6 ATS (1-7 SU) in eight games as an underdog this year. The pick here is NEW YORK, which is 8-4 SU since the start of July. The FoxSheets have two more reasons to go with the Liberty despite their 10-point loss in Washington on Saturday:

NEW YORK is 49-21 ATS (70.0%, +25.9 Units) off a road loss by 10 points or more since 1997. The average score was NEW YORK 71.9, OPPONENT 70.5 - (Rating = 2*).

Play On - Home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (NEW YORK) - after a loss by 10 points or more. (168-109 since 1997, 60.6%, +48.1 units. Rating = 2*).

Since July 1, the Under is 9-3 in Liberty games, and the FoxSheets provide a four-star trend expecting the UNDER to occur again on Tuesday night.

John Whisenant is 14-2 UNDER (87.5%, +11.8 Units) in home games after a division game as the coach of NEW YORK. The average score was NEW YORK 70.9, OPPONENT 70.8 - (Rating = 4*).

Despite a poor performance in Washington, the Liberty have played well of late. Since July 1, they’re 8-4 SU and 7-5 ATS, including 6-2 SU and 5-3 ATS at home. Cappie Pondexter, who leads New York in points (17.1 PPG) and assists (4.8 APG), has scored in double figures in 18 straight games.

The Storm have played 10 road games since Jackson’s injury, going just 3-7 SU and 4-6 ATS during that span. Their backcourt’s performance in Atlanta was atrocious, as Sue Bird and Tanisha Wright combined for just six points, five assists and 12 turnovers.

There is hope for Seattle though. The last time the Storm faced New York, in July 2010, they were without Jackson, who was out with a mild concussion. They won that game 78-70.

Angels-Yankees open 3-game set in the Bronx

LOS ANGELES ANGELS (63-52, +5.7 Units)

at NEW YORK YANKEES (69-44, +10.7 Units)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -115, Los Angeles +105, Total: 8.5

The Angels look to wake up their bats when they start a three-game series in Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. L.A. scored just four runs in a three-game series versus Seattle, but won two of those contests. The Yankees entered Boston last weekend scorching hot, with their series-opening win giving them eight straight victories. New York then lost the final two games of the series, marking its first series defeat since July 4-6 to Cleveland.

Los Angeles has a golden opportunity to take Tuesday’s opener with a big advantage on the mound in Dan Haren versus A.J. Burnett. The Angels have won seven out of Haren’s past nine starts and are 28-20 (.583) against teams with winning records. Los Angeles has also been a strong bet on the road (31-27, +4.6 Units) and has won four of its past five series openers. The Yanks have been great at home (37-22, +2.4 Units), but are a losing wager against right-handed starters (44-35, -3.5 Units) and a mediocre 38-36 in night games. Burnett is 0-8 with a 7.28 ERA in 12 August starts with New York, and that trend will likely continue as LOS ANGELES will take game one with a terrific pitching performance by Haren.

A trio of three-star FoxSheets trends also supports picking the Angels.

Play On - Any team (L.A. ANGELS) - poor hitting team (AVG <=.260) against a decent starting pitcher (ERA=4.20 to 4.70) -AL, with a starting pitcher whose strikes out 5 or more batters per start. (86-40 over the last 5 seasons.) (68.3%, +42.9 units. Rating = 3*).

Play Against - Home teams with a money line of -100 to -150 (N.Y. YANKEES) - off 2 straight road losses vs. a division rival, starting a well-rested pitcher who is working on 5 or 6 days rest. (70-43 since 1997.) (61.9%, +37.4 units. Rating = 3*).

Play Against - Any team (N.Y. YANKEES) - hot hitting team - batting .315 or better over their last 10 games, with a hot bullpen whose ERA is under 3.00 the last 10 games. (69-43 over the last 5 seasons.) (61.6%, +35.2 units. Rating = 3*).

Dan Haren (12-6, 2.81 ERA) has never pitched at the new Yankee Stadium, but has never been intimidated in the Bronx, winning all three starts at the old Yankee Stadium, posting a 3.15 ERA with 16 K and two walks in 20 innings. Haren has been electric of late, going 6-1 with a 2.58 ERA, 48 K and 8 BB in his past nine starts. Haren has allowed just one run in three straight outings (1.09 ERA, 0.69 WHIP). The Angels have scored the second-fewest runs in the AL (441) but find themselves 1½ games back in the AL West, thanks in part to some great pitching.

The Yankees on the other hand, have scored the second-most runs in the majors with 603, but are also 1½ games back in their division. New York will have to shake off a tough loss Sunday night to the rival Red Sox, when Mariano Rivera blew his fifth save of the year and Boston later won in the 10th inning.

A.J Burnett (8-9, 4.54 ERA) has been horrible of late, going 2-6 with a 5.29 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in his past 11 starts. He has also struggled recently against the Angels, posting a 5.54 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in his past four starts against them.
