Clayton Kershaw, LA Dodgers At Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers close out a three-game series at Chase Field on Sunday with a premier pitching matchup. Each team's top starting pitcher will take the hill hoping to end a stretch of six meetings in 10 days with a victory.

Game time is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. (PT). Umpire Ed Hickox will be behind home plate, and he has seen home favorites of 140 or less go 4-8 this season. The ‘under’ is also 3-1 in games he has worked with a 7-run total or less.

The teams split the first two games of the series in high-scoring affairs that both went ‘over’ the total. In fact, the ‘over’ had cashed in the last four meetings heading into Saturday after going ‘under’ in four of the previous five.

The Dodgers topped the Diamondbacks 7-4 on Friday in the series opener after losing four of the previous five meetings. The underdog won for the third straight time in the season series as LA catcher Rod Barajas hit a two-run double during a six-run third inning and later homered.

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (13-4, 2.68 ERA) will be going for his sixth win in as many starts, and has dominated the Diamondbacks during his career. He is 5-1 in eight starts vs. Arizona with a 1.90 ERA and 5-3 on the road this season with a 3.56 ERA.

Three of his last four wins have come away from home, and two of his past three have seen 5½-run totals posted.

Kershaw has not given up more than two runs in his last five outings, going seven innings or more four times during that stretch. He earned a win in his last trip to Phoenix on July 15, allowing four runs – none earned – and five hits in seven innings of a 6-4 victory.

The Diamondbacks counter with their ace Ian Kennedy (13-3, 3.17), who will also be going for his sixth straight victory. Like Kershaw, three of Kennedy’s past five wins have come on the road. In his last two home starts, he has allowed just two runs and nine hits in 14 innings of work.

Kennedy is 5-2 at home this year with a 3.13 ERA, but he has struggled a bit against LA with a 2-1 mark and 4.67 ERA in three starts.

However, he did beat the Dodgers during his winning streak on July 16, surrendering two runs and five hits in seven innings of a 3-2 victory. The ‘over’ is 5-2 in his last seven trips to the mound.

Los Angeles will be completing a six-game road trip and returns home Monday for six games, starting with a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Meanwhile, Arizona continues a 10-game homestand on Monday with the first of four against the Houston Astros.

Slipping Cleveland Indians Battle Texas Rangers

The Cleveland Indians are dropping fast in the American League Central standings and the Texas Rangers are not helping to break the fall. Both teams are set to close out a three-game series Sunday night at the Ballpark in Arlington with the first pitch scheduled for 5:05 (PT).

Since May 24, Cleveland has tallied a 25-40 record and lost 11 games in the division race. The Indians watched their record fall to .500 for the third time this year with an 8-7 loss Friday night, as they were unable to protect a 7-2 lead in the early going.

Triple-digit temperatures in the Lone Star State are not going to make a turnaround easy, especially considering the team has lost 17 of its last 20 games in the series, including the first five meetings this year.

Right-handed starter Josh Tomlin (11-5, 4.16) will try to ease the pain and pick up his first victory since July 15. He came away with a no-decision in his latest effort, giving up five runs and 10 hits over six frames in a 9-6 road victory over the Red Sox.

He will be making his 12th start of the year away from home, posting a winning 4-3 mark and 5.11 ERA, as he’s issued just seven free passes in 68 2/3 frames.

Tomlin has made 34 career starts in his first two years in the majors, but none of those have come against the Rangers.

Texas has come back to Earth a bit in splitting its first four games this month after enjoying a sensational July that included a 12-game win streak. Despite posting a 7-9 record in the last 16 contests, the Rangers are still 19-9 in their last 28 games.

Rangers Ballpark has played a major part in the team’s success, with the team posting a 36-21 record at the venue while leading all MLB teams with 87 round trippers at home. The stadium currently leads all ballparks around the league in home runs per game (2.71) and runs per game (11.04).

Colby Lewis (10-8, 4.14 ERA) has suffered back-to-back poor performances against the Twins and Tigers, giving up nine runs (eight earned) and 18 hits over 10 2/3 innings in that span. He has struggled to keep opposing batters inside the ballpark, allowing 27 home runs in 139 innings, including 17 in just 66 frames at home.

Lewis will aim to remain perfect in his career against the Indians, coming in with a 2-0 mark and 6.89 ERA in five appearances (three starts). Both of the wins were earned last year when as he registered 18 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.

Total bettors will find that the ‘over’ is 9-2 in Lewis' last 11 home starts, which is far from surprising due to the amount of round trippers he’s allowed.

Home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn may keep the hitter’s from swinging for the fences, as his 18 games have averaged just 1.61 home runs a contest. The ‘under is also 12-6 when he’s behind the dish.

Weather forecasts suggest almost unbearable conditions with game-time temperatures exceeding the century mark. A steady southeasterly wind is expected at 10 mph (in from center). Texas has lost all three of its games this year when playing in such a condition.

Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees MLB Betting Preview

It's a familiar sight for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball viewers when the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees close out a 3-game set. First pitch from Fenway Park is slated for a little past 5:00 p.m. (PT).

New York opened the series with a 3-2 win Friday night as the underdog on the MLB betting charts. Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher played key roles in the Yankees' 3-run, 6th-inning outburst against Boston's Jon Lester while New York relievers silenced the Red Sox lineup over the final 4 1/3 innings.

The victory pushed the Yankees a game ahead of the Sox in the AL East standings and swelled New York's win streak to eight games. Saturday's matinee was still in progress with CC Sabathia and the Yanks carrying a -150 price with a scoreboard total at nine runs.

Sunday's starting pitching battle has New York's Freddy Garcia (11-8, 3.22) facing Josh Beckett (15-6, 2.20) of the Red Sox. The game will mark Garcia's third start vs. the Red Sox this season, along with one relief appearance. Beckett is battling the Yankees lineup for a fourth time in '11.

All three of Beckett's 2011 assignments against New York have been opposite Sabathia and resulted in Boston victories. The right-hander has whittled his career ERA down vs. the Yanks with 21 innings of work and only two earned runs crossing the plate in building his personal record to 13-7 against them.

Beckett has been particularly stingy at home with a 1.99 ERA in 10 Fenway starts. The Red Sox have won eight of those 10 contests.

Garcia is shooting for his fourth consecutive win and has posted eight quality starts in his last nine outings. His overall numbers away from the Bronx are also of the quality variety with a 2.85 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in eight starts and his lone relief outing of the season which came here at Fenway in April.

Neither of Garcia's two starts vs. the Red Sox have been quality outings, however. He lasted less than two frames at home on June 7 when Boston scored four times against the righty in a 6-4 victory with Garcia +115. He was a 125 home 'dog to Lester again on May 15 when the Sox plated five in Garcia's 5 1/3 frames en route to a 7-5 triumph.

Now in his 12th full season at the major league level, Tim Timmons is in line to call the balls and strikes for this one. 'Under' bettors have cleaned up when Timmons works the plate this season to the tune of 15-6-1 this season and 33-17-4 the past two years.

Boston's weather forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms throughout the day and evening. Look for the thermometer to sit in the low-70s at game time with a southeast wind around 10 mph (1B across to 3B).

New York will enjoy Monday off before opening a homestand Tuesday with the first of three vs. the Los Angeles Angels. The Red Sox hit the road for six games beginning Monday at the Minnesota Twins.

NASCAR Betting Action Returns To Pocono

There are just six races left in NASCAR's version of the regular season, and a slew of drivers are jockeying for position to get into Chase for the Sprint Cup. This week, NASCAR betting action heads to Long Pond, PA, where Pocono Raceway will host the Good Sam RV Insurance 500.

This race is the 21st of the season, and it is scheduled for Sunday, August 7. The green flag drops at 10:18 a.m. (PT), and live television coverage is available on ESPN.

The favorite on the Don Best odds screen for this race is Denny Hamlin, and for good reason. Hamlin won this race (then known as the Pennsylvania 500) in 2006 and 2009, which ties him for the most wins in this race for an active driver. Hamlin has four wins at Pocono, and seven Top 5 finishes in his 11 races.

Earlier this season at the 5-hour ENERGY 500 here in Long Pond, Hamlin only finished 19th, something totally out of the ordinary for his history.

Hamlin, who checks in at +450, also badly needs a good showing in this race to make it into the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Though he is currently holding a Wild Card slot to get into the postseason, Hamlin is 19 points back of an automatic qualifying spot. A win in any of these last six races probably ensures that he is in regardless, as there are only three drivers right now that qualify for a Wild Card berth outside of the Top 10, that being Paul Menard and David Ragan.

The man who won the 5-hour ENERGY 500 knows a thing or two about this track as well, and we know that Jeff Gordon is going to be a driver to be reckoned with on Sunday. The Rainbow Warrior has five wins on this racetrack in his 37 attempts, and he has an average finishing position on 10.3. Gordon won the Pennsylvania 500 back in 1998, and he would love to make another trip to the winner's circle to ensure his place in the Chase as well.

Gordon is +500 on the Don Best odds screen.

Kurt Busch was the runner-up at the race earlier this year at Poconos Raceway, and he is going to be a sneaky driver to watch at +1000 on Sunday. Busch won this race in 2005 and 2007, and he has eight Top 5 finishes in 21 tries here.

Busch only has one win on the campaign, but he does have three pole positions and knows what it is like to win in Long Pond. Just like a number of other drivers, a win on Sunday would basically wrap up a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup for Busch once and for all, a coveted spot to be in.

One man who has no troubles about the Chase is points leader Carl Edwards. There aren't many tracks that Edwards hasn't found success at in his career, and this is no exception. The No. 99 Ford made it to Victory Lane in this race in 2008.

Edwards also just signed an extension to his contract with Roush Racing, which will keep him with the team for the foreseeable future. What better way would there be to celebrate this contract renewal than to win at the Poconos!

Edwards is one of a slew of drivers that are +1000 on the NASCAR odds for Sunday's race.

There's a modest 40 percent chance of rain in the forecast on Sunday. Scattered clouds should keep the track temperate down just a bit. Highs are only expected to reach the high-70s.
