Monday betting tips: Wind blowing out in Rays-A's game

Weather: There’s between a 50 and 60 percent chance of rain in the following games: Pirates-Braves, Padres-Phillies, Mariners-Yankees and Royals-Red Sox.

The wind is going to be blowing out (12 mph) in tomorrow’s Rays-A’s game according to the early forecast. The total opened at 7 for this game at multiple Las Vegas sportsbooks Sunday night.

    WHO’S HOT

The Los Angeles Angels are 18-8 in their last 26 games overall. They are -125 favorites Monday at Cleveland.

The Braves are 12-2 in their last 14 home games. They host the Pirates on Monday and are -188 chalk.

    WHO’S NOT

The Seattle Mariners are on a 15-game winless streak and are +178 underdogs against the New York Yankees on Monday. Seattle was a dog or a pick in each of those 15 losses and averaged just 2.66 runs per game over the losing skid. The M’s have fallen to 25th on the money list at -14.25 units. That means that you’d be down $1425 if you placed $100 on them to win in every game this season.

    GAME OF THE DAY

Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves (-188, 7)

    INJURY TO NOTE

Chipper Jones could be back in the lineup for the Braves on Monday. Atlanta’s third baseman went on the disabled list after he underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee. The future Hall of Famer is batting .259 with eight homers and 46 RBIs this season.

    KEY STAT

The under is 18-3 in the Phillies’ last 21 games when the total is set at 6.5 or lower. The over/under opened at 7 for the club’s Monday game against the Padres.

    BETTING TIPS

As mentioned in today’s lead story, no team is better in playing in hot conditions than the Texas Rangers. Josh Hamilton and Co. are 18-8-1 in games with temperatures at 90 or higher. The temperature is expected to be over 100 in Monday’s game against the Twins.

Few teams see totals north of 8 as often as the Yankees do. The Bronx Bombers came into the season with a reputation for a club with lots of firepower but lacking big league arms. But the Yanks are one of the best under bets this season. The under is 15-5-1 in their last 21 games and 5-1 in NY starting hurler Freddy Garcia’s last six trips to the hill.

      Monday's six-pack

Some college football over/under lines, for wins this season
-- Nebraska 9.5-- Cornhuskers' first season in the Big Dozen.

-- Auburn 6-- New QB, only four senior starters.

-- Boise State 10.5-- Move from WAC to Mountain West.

-- West Virginia 9.5-- High total for a team with coaching turnover.

-- South Carolina 9-- Fourth-highest figure in the SEC.

-- TCU 9-- Jump from Mountain West to Big East next year.

      *****************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend..........

      13) Looks like all systems are go for the NFL season, minus the Hall of Fame Game in two weeks. Time to get to work on handicapping games.

      12) Good thing for Seahawk fans, many of whom are probably Mariner fans-- M's have now lost 15 games in a row. What had been a promising season at Safeco Field has turned into a complete debacle- they were 2.5 games out of first place when this losing streak started. .

      11) In case you were wondering, and I'm guessing you were, the longest losing streak in the last 50 years is 23 in a row by the 1961 Phillies.

      10) John Daly's top 10 finish Sunday was his first since 2005.

      9) Red Sox have outscored opponents 94-37 in the seventh inning.

      8) This is the Mets' 50th season in the National League; they were 50-50 after 100 games, the first time in frachise history they've been 50-50.

      7) Giants beat Milwaukee 2-1, are now 27-13 in one-run games as they head to the east coast and a visit to the White House Monday, before a series in Philadelphia starts Tuesday. Interesting week for them.

      6) How insulting is it that the Rays had to issue a statement saying they aren't going to trade James Shields? They're still only 6.5 games out of the Wild Card spot- it doesn't look good for them, but to think they're going to throw up the white flag and trade Shields was ludicrous, but typical of how the big market teams view all the smaller market teams.

      5) Braves have a 4-game lead over Arizona in the NL Wild Card race; you look at the Giants leading the NL West with the same record as Atlanta and you realize the Braves are a pretty good bet to make the playoffs.

      4) There are three teams tied for first place in NL Central and the 50-51 Reds are only three games out; this division is baseball's best hope for the last month of the season to be interesting.

      3) Golfer Sean O'Hair won the Canadian Open Sunday, his 4th career win, but first in two years; he had missed 10 of 17 cuts this season and fired his swing coach and his caddy, both of whom are.........Canadians.

      2) Cosidering the events of the last three years, if you had a daughter and she told you she wanted to marry Ben Roethlisberger, what would you say to her? Its at times like this I'm glad I'm not a parent.

      1) This is going to be a busy week; over 1,000 player signings in the NFL, training camp starting and the baseball trading deadline is next Sunday at 4:00. Less than five weeks until college football starts. Good times.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              STREAKING

James McDonald (6-4, 4.15 ERA), Pittsburgh Pirates

Baseball bettors are like yard sale shoppers. They’re always looking for a good bargain. This Pirate hurler is the equivalent of an original Atari system with 50 games for $2.50 – a sweet deal any way you slice it.

The Pirates are 6-1 in McDonald’s last seven outings, and they were underdogs in five of those games.

Mark Buehrle (7-5, 3.38 ERA), Chicago White Sox

The White Sox are just 6-9 in their last 15 games, but three of those wins came on days Buehrle took the bump. Chicago would actually be in great shape if Buehrle started all its games. The club is 5-0 in his last five appearances and 13-6 in his 19 starts this season.

The veteran southpaw has been especially effective this month. He carries a 2.05 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) into Monday’s contest.

              SLUMPING

Jason Vargas (6-8, 3.94 ERA), Seattle Mariners

Seattle can’t sweep bad starting pitching performances under the rug like the Red Sox or Rangers. The squad's lack of offense doesn't allow bailouts for starting hurlers.

Vargas has given up four or more runs in four of his last seven outings. Not surprisingly, the Mariners are 2-5 in his last seven starts and the under is 5-1 in his last six trips the hill.

              RETURNING

Jon Lester (10-4, 3.31 ERA), Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox haven’t exactly been reeling since Lester went down with a strained lat muscle but they’ll be happy to see their big left-hander take the mound on Monday for the first time since July 5.

“We’re just trying to ramp [Lester] up and let him get strong, " Red Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters. "He feels nothing in that lat, which is great. That’s what we wanted. Now it’s just the idea of getting him back to where he can go out there and start a game and not be so limited to where he can only throw 50 pitches.”

Lester was pitching extremely well before going down with the injury. He went 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in the month of June.

MLB heat wave: Best and worst bets in hot games
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The saying in baseball goes, “records are meant to be broken” but that’s supposed to apply to home run tallies and hitting streaks, not game-time temperatures.

We’re not here to debate global warming; all we know the last week has been historically hot in the United States. The temperatures have been so high that it’s almost, almost made it possible to feel sympathy for pros on the baseball diamond playing in triple-digit conditions while wearing pants and socks.

Weather reports are as important as pitching matchups this time of the year for sharp MLB bettors. It looks like the worst of the heat wave is behind us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t prepare for the next time Mother Nature gives us a scorcher.

Below are the best MLB trends for betting days with game-time temperatures of 90 or higher.

                BEST BET: TEXAS RANGERS

No team plays in more uncomfortably, hot games than the Rangers. Unlike other warmer climate MLB cities like Houston, Arizona and Tampa Bay, Texas – which plays in Arlington – doesn’t play in a domed park. That means the Rangers are accustomed to playing ball while sweating their balls off.

The Rangers are 18-8 this season in hot games and 63-35 dating back to 2009. Texas took the first two games in the weekend series against the Blue Jays with temperatures going over 100 degrees in both contests.

                WORST BET: DOME TEAMS

Just like in football, when bettors fade dome teams on the road playing in winter conditions, baseball teams that play their home games in air-conditioned buildings aren’t worth backing outside in extreme temperatures.

Dome teams are 6-18 in hot games this season, entering Sunday action, and 40-69 since 2009.

The Rays and Astros are the worst offenders here. Tampa Bay is 0-3 this season and 7-14 since 2008 while Houston is 0-3 this year and 2-14 over the last three seasons combined.

The Rays dropped the first two games in Kansas City against the Royals this past weekend with the mercury hitting the triple digits. Tampa Bay pitcher David Price tweeted, “Kidnap me from kc...too hott here.”

                TOTAL TIP: BET THE OVER

The over/under trend in hot games suggest we should bet the over. That is, as long as you ignore this season’s numbers. Entering Thursday’s games, the over was just 84-100-11 in hot games.

That’s a break from the pattern we had seen in 2010, 2009 and 2008 where the over went 400-346-26. If you’re looking for a specific team to bet totals in hot games, look once again at the Texas Rangers.

The over is 18-7-1 hot games at the Ballpark in Arlington this campaign and 72-55-6 since 2008.

MLB day/night split: Best situational bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Split stats and their usefulness is a polarizing topic among baseball bettors.

Some bettors swear by splits and believe they have tremendous predictive power. Other bettors are far less likely to accept their reliability, believing that there is a randomness effect at play.

The day/night split - as it relates to teams, not individual players - is one of those stats that baseball bettors spend considerable time arguing about.
Those who think certain teams perform better during the day or at night are likely to apply day/night splits to their day-to-day handicapping. Skeptics will say that small sample sizes, chance and other factors contribute to teams having unusual splits.

Either way, I'm not here to argue. I'm just here to provide you with the teams that have the most unusual day/night splits so far in 2011 and let you draw your own conclusions.

                  BETTER IN SUNLIGHT

New York Yankees (28-6 Day; 30-34 Night)

The Yankees are red-hot in day games so far this year, which is good, because they are a sub-.500 team at night.

The Yanks' day-game dominance can be attributed to pitching. Their pitching staff has a league-best 2.65 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in day games, and they've gotten tremendous production out of A.J. Burnett, CC Sabathia and Freddy Garcia in games with early starts.

Sabathia and Garcia, in particular, have each taken the hill seven times and are a combined 10-1 with a 1.46 ERA over 98.2 innings in day games.

Boston Red Sox (23-8 Day; 38-29 Night)

As a team, Boston is hitting a scorching .306 in 31 day games so far this year. Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Marco Scutaro, David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury are all hitting .333 or better.

The Red Sox are averaging 6.48 runs per game on 44 home runs (1.4 per game), which has been more than enough run support for a pitching staff that has a 3.59 ERA in day games. The most reliable day-game starter for Boston has been Jon Lester, who is 4-0 with a 1.60 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in six starts.

Detroit Tigers (24-14 Day; 29-33 Night)

Detroit is the third-best day team in 2011 but struggles at night, and much of the blame goes to the starting pitching. Justin Verlander (2.61 ERA) is the only Tigers starter with an ERA under 4.20 in night games.

In fact, Detroit has actually hit better in night games despite the wide gap in record. Here are Detroit's day-night hitting stats:

                  Day: 4.4 runs per game, .255 BA, .723 OPS, 1.0 HR/game
                  Night: 4.5 runs per game, .279 BA, .761 OPS, 1.0 HR/game

                  PREFER THE STADIUM LIGHTS

San Francisco Giants (16-20 Day; 42-23 Night)

San Francisco pitchers lead the league with a 2.88 ERA and are third with a 1.21 WHIP in night games. As impressive as that is, much of the damage has been done by the bullpen, where four Giants relievers have ERAs of 1.30 or less in a combined 107.2 innings of work.

Setup man Ramon Ramirez is the most baffling of all those relievers. He has a ridiculous 0.35 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 26 night innings compared to a 5.40 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 16 day innings.

Toronto Blue Jays (14-25 Day; 36-26 Night)

Only the Houston Astros have a lower winning percentage than the Blue Jays in day games this year, but then again, the Astros have the lowest winning percentage in just about every won/loss category.

It's no secret Toronto has relied on its hitting this year to get around a .500 record, but the batters have failed in day games.

As a team, the Blue Jays have a .234 batting average and .684 OPS during the day, both of which are near the bottom in the majors. Compare that with the night stats, where Toronto is third in the league in both batting average (.272) and OPS (.778), and it's easy to see why the day-night disparity is so large.

Cleveland Indians (14-19 Day; 37-28 Night)

Cleveland's pitching has particularly scuffled in day games this year, as the Indians are 26th in the league in ERA and 27th in WHIP under the sun. Justin Masterson (3.65 ERA) is the only Cleveland starter with an ERA under 4.60 in day games this year, and even he has fared much better at night (7-3, 2.15 ERA).

Among the Indians' hot-hitting night batters: Travis Hafner (.298 BA, 6 HR, .921 OPS) and Asdrubal Cabrera (.300 BA, 12 HR, .852 OPS).

Hot lines: Monday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Oakland Athletics (+105, 7)

There were a couple things Tampa Bay management realized Saturday night. It’s clear the Rays, after losing to their second game in as many nights to the Royals, are not going to catch the Yankees or the Red Sox in the AL East. That means the playoffs are happening this year.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that Desmond Jennings is really good. Well, Jennings was the sixth best prospect in baseball according to Baseball America in 2010, so the Rays always knew Jennings was good – but maybe not this good.

The 24-year-old outfielder went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, a stolen base, two runs scored and a run driven in. Even in a losing effort, that’s one hell of a season debut.

There are whispers that Jennings’ call-up means Tampa Bay is going to put a full-court press on trading its starting center fielder B.J. Upton. You never know, the Rays might be a better team with Jennings playing every day and manning center field.

Expect Jennings to give the slumping Rays a positive jolt of energy, which should be enough to get past the A’s on Monday.

                    Pick: Rays

Minnesota Twins at Texas Rangers (-170, 10)

It doesn’t matter who they have in their batting order, the Texas Rangers always score runs. Maybe it’s because of the blistering Texas heat that helps carry more balls over the fence.

The Rangers are third the majors in runs scored and have finished inside the Top 10 in that offensive category for 10 straight seasons. It helps that Texas always seems to attract quality hitters.

Adrian Beltre was last offseason’s big catch and he’s been delivering the goods with 20 home runs and a team-high 76 RBIs. But the Gold Glove third baseman was put on the DL over the weekend because of a strained left hamstring.

Luckily, as mentioned, the Rangers have enough big bats in the lineup to fill the void. Chris Davis, who was hitting .368 with 24 homers and 66 RBIs in 193 at-bats in the Pacific Coast League, was called up to play third in place of Beltre.

''These guys just came of a huge winning streak and are playing really well,'' Davis told the Dallas Morning News. ''I'm just going to step in and play good defense and keep swinging the bat.''

Entering Sunday’s games, the Rangers had won 14 of their last 16 games.

                    Pick: Rangers

AP Sources: NFL, players have agreed to deal

                      Posted: Jul 25, 2011 8:09 AM CDT

WASHINGTON (AP) - NFL owners and players agreed early Monday to the terms of a deal to end the lockout, and players were expected to begin the voting process later in the day, two people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the process was supposed to remain secret and no formal announcement had been made.

The NFL Players Association's executive committee was to meet Monday to be presented with the finalized agreement. Owners overwhelmingly approved a proposal last week, but some unresolved issues still needed to be figured out to satisfy players.

The sides worked through the weekend and wrapped up talks Monday morning, one of the people told the AP.

The league's old labor deal expired in March, and the owners locked out the players, the NFL's first work stoppage since 1987.

"We have every reason to believe it's going to be a good day," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an email to the AP.

If players sign off on the agreement Monday, NFL clubs would be able to start signing 2011 draft picks and rookie free agents on Tuesday. Conversations with veteran free agents also could start Tuesday, and signings could begin Friday.

Under that tentative schedule, training camps would open for 10 of the 32 teams on Wednesday, 10 teams on Thursday, another 10 teams on Friday, and the last two teams on Sunday.

The major economic framework for the deal was worked out more than a week ago.

That included how the more than $9 billion in annual league revenues will be divided (about 53 percent to owners and 47 percent to players over the next decade; the old CBA resulted in nearly a 50-50 split); a per-club cap of about $120 million for salary and bonuses in 2011 - and at least that in 2012 and 2013 - plus about $22 million for benefits; a salary system to rein in spending on first-round draft picks; and unrestricted free agency for most players after four seasons.
