Wednesday’s betting tips: WWC bettors jump on U.S. side

    Who’s hot

WNBA: Indiana has won and covered in each of its last six games to move to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

WNBA: New York is 6-0-1 against the spread in its last seven.

    Who’s not

WNBA: Atlanta is a league-worst 1-9-1 against the spread.

WNBA: Just three of Tulsa’s last 10 meetings with Chicago have played over.

    Key stat

4 – Tour de France reigning champion Alberto Contador has crashed four times through the race’s first nine stages and is now riding with a banged-up knee. Contador is still set as the second favorite (+170) to Andy Schleck (+110), but is about four minutes of the leading pace.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ivory Latta, Tulsa Shock: Latta is considered doubtful for Wednesday’s game against Chicago with an illness. Latta sits second in team scoring with a 14.6 average and leads the club with 3.2 assists per game. The Shock are set as big 13-point underdogs on the road.

    Game of the day

    Women’s World Cup: U.S.A (-120) vs. France (+265) Draw (+220)

    Notable quotable

"[Beating Germany] is the biggest result of the Japanese team in history. This is a very important match. It feels like as a player, we cannot do very much for Japan, but we can at least try and play as hard as we can." - Japanese captain Homare Sawa about the importance of Japan’s performance at the Women’s World Cup in light of the May 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan. The Japan side is set as a +175 underdog in Tuesday’s game against Sweden – which is set as a +120 favorite. The draw is currently priced at +220.

    Notes and tips

The buzz around the U.S. women’s World Cup team is catching up with bettors. The U.S. is holding strong as the tournament’s favorite at +100, but its odds are moving for its semifinal matchup with France. The U.S. side was set at around +100 against France on Monday but is now pegged around -120 with the draw at +230 and a France victory at +265.

Rory McIlroy, who heads into the British Open as a +600 favorite, has turned down the tournament’s offer to supply him with increased security throughout this week’s Open. "There will be the usual policemen on duty won't there?" McIlroy told reporters. "That's fine. I don't want a fuss."

Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino has a clear vision of what his team needs to do to advance to the knockout stages of Copa America – beat Venezuela on Wednesday. Paraguay sits second in the group with two points, two fewer than Venezuela and even with Brazil. "It is clear that the only alternative that remains is to win the match," he after his side was five minutes away from a victory over Brazil in its last game. "To be in the next stage, we need to win." Paraguay is set as a -185 favorite with the draw at +275 and Venezuela at +600. Meanwhile, Brazil is a big -400 favorite in its last game of group play against struggling Ecuador.

      Wednesday's six-pack

-- Mets traded closer Francisco Rodriguez to the Brewers for two guys to be named later, dumping salary they should use to sign Jose Reyes.

-- 79 of the 84 All-Stars were in Phoenix; Alex Rodriguez and Chipper Jones just had surgery, so they're excused. Guess what team the other three guys play for?

-- Home Run Derby is better to watch than the All-Star Game.

-- Four pitchers who started All-Star Game for both leagues: Vida Blue, Roy Halladay, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson.

-- A 6-year old girl in Illinois shot a hole-in-one on a 85-yard hole. Who knew 6-year olds even went out on real courses?

-- Is it illegal to sing the National Anthem on a game televised on FOX if you haven't been on American Idol? Seems like it.

Wednesday's Den: National League first half report cards

Arizona—Bullpen is vastly improved; team is a contender. 3rd in NL in runs scored. Grade: A-

Atlanta— Lead Wild Card race by five games despite dismal season by Uggla. Grade: B+

Chicago— 37-55, a complete debacle. Have too many bad contracts to pursue Pujols. Grade: D-

Reds— They need more ground ball pitchers, playing in a tiny ballpark. Grade: C-

Colorado— Jimenez was great last year, not so good this year. Team is disappointment. Grade: D+

Florida— Started season 30-20, then went on 4-25 nosedive, changed managers and are now 9-3 in last dozen games, as they try to create interest heading into their new stadium next year. Grade: INC

Houston— On pace to lose 109 games. They’re 14-33 at home. Their bullpen is pathetic. Grade: F

Dodgers— Off field issues have crippled efforts on field. Long-term prognosis is bad until ownership drama is ironed out. Grade: D-

Brewers— 33-14 at home, 16-29 on road. Going for whole thing, trading or K-Rod Tuesday, in Fielder's walk year. Grade: B-

Mets— Showing grit in playing without most of their big money guys. Reyes carried team for three months; can their crackerjack doctors get him back? Collins gets an A. Team gets…..Grade: B+ Mets traded their closer to Milwaukee Monday night. Straight salary dump- if they use the cash to re-sign Reyes, they get a pat on the back.

Phillies— Dominant starting pitching masks shaky bullpen. Offense hasn’t been great. Have best record in NL, but with Oswalt hurt, they can’t afford any more injured pitchers. Grade: B+

Pirates— If this team makes playoffs, should send Clint Hurdle to Middle East to fix things there. Have shot at first winning season since 1992. Grade: A+

St Louis— Pujols is hurt; Holliday had an appendectomy, but has been stellar since. Berkman has saved offense’s bacon. Duncan is keeping pitching staff pasted together. Grade: B

San Diego— If this team’s bats are wooden, must be balsa wood. Scored 28 less runs than any other NL team, though they have scored more than Seattle. Good pitching though. Grade: C

Giants— Defending champs lost star catcher Posey for year, are still in first, thanks to dominant starting pitching. Offense could use a jolt, which is where Carlos Beltran could fit in. Grade: B+

Nationals— Manager quit over salary dispute while team was on 11-1 run; they’re 8-9 since, scoring five runs in last three games. Zimmerman is back from abdominal surgery, but not near 100%. Grade: INC

Lady luck: Wednesday's best WNBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Dream at New York Liberty (-5, 163)

The New York Liberty feel like they’re just hitting their stride and it’s showing both on the court and at the pay window.

The Liberty handed San Antonio its first losing streak of the season by dropping the Silver Stars in back-to-back games. They covered both of those spreads and are now 6-0-1 against the spread in their last seven contests overall.

Guard Callie Pondexter has been a big part of the club’s success, putting up at least 18 points in eight straight games while also leading the team with 5.2 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

"After being 12 games in," Pondexter told reporters, "we're starting to get our flow and understanding of each other and what each other can contribute within the system. Overall, I think our defense has been pretty damn good the last few games."

We’re all over the Liberty in this one.

            Pick: Liberty

Connecticut Sun at Indiana Fever (-5.5, 150.5)

The Indiana Fever opened the year by dropping three of their first six games outright and covering just two of those pointspreads. That slow start seems eons ago now.

The Fever have won and covered in each of their last six to move atop the Eastern Conference at 9-3 straight up. Indiana has some major scoring weapons with three players putting up double figures every night, but Katie Douglas is the first attacking option at the moment.

"I feel extremely rested. I feel energized. I just feel engaged and I'm in a good rhythm and I think as a shooter and as a scorer, any time you can find that good rhythm you just try to stay with it,” Douglas, who averages better than 16 points per game, told WNBA.com. So my teammates definitely do a great job setting me up or getting me open and I've just been able to throw it in this year.”

Connecticut is going to have a tough time dealing with Indiana’s balanced attack. The Sun are coming off a 90-67 blowout loss to Minnesota.

            Pick: Fever

Rounding the bases: This week's MLB betting trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

              HOT TEAM: Texas Rangers

              THIS SEASON: 51-41
              LAST WEEK: 7-0

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Mariners for four.

THE SKINNY: Give credit to the Rangers for coping with fan tragedy professionally last week, as well as motoring into the All-Star break with authority.

While the rest of the American League seems fixated on what’s shaping into another classic Yankees-Red Sox pennant race, the defending league champions just keep on chugging down in the Southwest. At 51-41, they sit in first place in the AL West as the second half begins, and an eight-game road trip opens with what could be a slam dunk in Seattle.

The Rangers have withstood injury and are still putting up great numbers. The ageless Michael Young is hitting .323, Nelson Cruz has 20 home runs, and Adrian Beltre, who loves hitting in Texas, has 71 RBIs. On the hill, you have Alexi Ogando and his nine wins, and C.J. Wilson’s 117 strikeouts.

The Rangers, who played without Josh Hamilton for a longer stretch than they hoped, have to be considered one of the better bets as the dog days of summer approach.

              COLD TEAM: Baltimore Orioles

              THIS SEASON: 36-52
              LAST WEEK: 0-7

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Indians for four.

THE SKINNY: They certainly showed some fight and fire this weekend, especially against David Ortiz at Fenway Park. But they left Boston with absolutely nothing to show for it.

Buck Showalter’s magic has apparently run out in Baltimore. Either that or this mix of youth and veterans just simply can’t hang with the big boys of the AL East. The Orioles went 0-fer in the week leading up to the break and, with contending Cleveland on deck this weekend, the misery may continue.

There are some guys having good seasons at the plate: Mark Reynolds has 20 home runs and Nick Markakis is hitting .292. But they just don’t score enough runs when it counts. Adam Jones, in fact, leads the team with just 49 RBIs. That’s not going to get it done versus the Red Sox, Rays, and Yankees. On the mound, a team 4.76 ERA has also contributed to the problems and no Orioles pitcher has 80 strikeouts yet, and we’re halfway through July.

It might get worse as the games become more important for their opponents, moving forward. Keep Baltimore in mind as a fade team.

              OVER TEAM: Pittsburgh Pirates

              O/U THIS SEASON: 39-48-3
              O/U LAST WEEK: 5-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Astros for three.

THE SKINNY: How’s this for a reversal of fortune? The pesky Pirates, one of the strongest under teams in the majors, have actually shown a little more spunk at the plate.

They won two more series last week at home, versus the Astros and Cubs, and rolled up some offense along the way. Pittsburgh amassed 31 runs in those six games, including four wins, and rocked its way into the All-Star break on the strength of a 9-1 victory over Chicago Sunday. More good news may be on the way, as they pick up the second half of the season with more games against the woeful Astros this weekend, this time in Houston.

The offensive numbers still aren’t great. No one has 15 home runs. Neil Walker leads the team with just 59 RBIs, and no regular is hitting over .300, though Andrew McCutchen is close (.291). No one knows how long this will lasts, but the schedule is favorable and the price is right. Keep your eye on the Pirates as a Cinderella over team the rest of July, and see if this fairy tale continues.

              UNDER TEAM: New York Mets

              O/U THIS SEASON: 48-39-4
              O/U LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Phillies for three.

THE SKINNY: As if the Mets didn’t have enough hard luck already this season, with injuries, financial woes and attendance problems at their state-of-the-art stadium.

Well, on the field, New York just digested a three-game series with the Giants and their stingy pitching. And when they come back from the break, they’ll have to face Philadelphia and its stingy pitching. Not the best of news for a lineup that is far too light without star infielders Jose Reyes and David Wright.

Carlos Beltran (13 home runs, 58 RBIs) is having a great season, but Jason Bay is still stuck in reverse. He went 0-11 in the three games versus San Francisco and without Reyes, the catalyst, this team is likely to continue its struggles.

They scored just eight runs in the four games leading up to the break, and watch for the first-place Phillies to pounce on that stretch. Consider the under in all three games this weekend at Citi Field.
