Thursday’s betting tips: Rookie SP debuts for Tribe

    Who’s hot

MLB: The over is 13-3 in Florida’s last 16 meetings with Houston.

MLB: The New York Mets are 17-7 in their last 24 games as an underdog.

    Who’s not

MLB: Baltimore had won only one of its eight heading into Wednesday’s action.

MLB: Kansas City has won four of its last 14 home games.

    Key stat

.178 – Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla went into Wednesday’s game with a .178 batting average after going 2-for-2 with a homer the night before. Uggla, who signed a $62 million contract with the Braves, hit .287 with 33 homers and 105 RBIs with Florida last season. The Braves are hitting only .237 (26th in the bigs).

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Placido Polanco, Philadelphia Phillies – Polanco will meet with a spinal cord specialist Thursday in Philadelphia after sitting out Tuesday and Wednesday with a pinched nerve in his back. The team hopes he’ll return to action by the weekend, but that will all depend on how Thursday’s meeting goes.

    Game of the day

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees (-180, 9.5)

    Notable quotable

"We have to win this game. We're going to work 30 percent on defense and 70 percent on attack." – Costa Rica coach Ricardo La Volpe about Thursday’s matchup with Bolivia following the side’s opening loss to Columbia at Copa America. Costa Rico is set as a +260 underdog with the draw at +215 and Bolivia at -105.

    Notes and tips

Zach McAllister will make his MLB debut Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays after being called up from Triple-A Columbus. The 6-foot-6 righty gets his shot with Fausto Carmona hitting the DL and his numbers looked pretty good in the minors. He was 8-3 with a 2.97 ERA and had 71 strikeouts and 21 walks in 97 innings of work with Columbus.

Oddsmakers have the hometown German side listed as a -125 favorite to win the Women’s World Cup after the group stage finished up with Wednesday’s action. The U.S., which suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Sweden on Wednesday to drop them to second place in their group are listed at +450, as is Brazil. The U.S. and Brazil will square off in the quarterfinals.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Friday, July 8

Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+1, 48)

Winnipeg quarterback Buck Pierce was hit hard on the blind side in the third quarter of the Bombers’ 24-16 win over the Tiger-Cats. But the injury-prone Pierce got back up, finished the game and will play Friday.

The Bombers, however, weren’t able to avoid the injury bug altogether. Receiver Kito Poblah (knee), SB Terrence Edwards (arm), WR Greg Carr (hamstring) are all hurt, although only Poblah is expected to miss Friday’s game. Defensive end Odell Willis (groin) and DB Jovon Johnson (hip) will play despite injuries, while LB Henoc Muamba (knee) and S Brady Browne (biceps) will miss at least a few weeks.

Toronto’s top offensive weapons Corey Boyd and Chad Owens picked up where they left off last year, helping the Argos steal a 23-21 win in Calgary last week. But unfortunately for Toronto bettors, the Argos still must rely on Cleo Lemon at pivot. He only completed 16-of-30 passes with 186 yards, one TD and one pick.

To keep things in perspective, if Calgary hadn’t miss three of four field goal opportunities, it would have won against the Argos.

      Pick: Winnipeg

      Calgary Stampeders at B.C. Lions (-2.5, 53.5)

The Stampeders are coming to Vancouver with the firm intent to rebound from a loss to the Argos. Calgary has its share of injuries after one week. Defensive tackle Justin Phillips (toe), K Rob Maver (leg), G Dimitri Tsoumpas (hamstring) and S Malik Jackson (concussion) are probably all out against the Lions. Receivers Ken-Yon Rambo and Jabari Arthur are questionable.

British Columbia lost its first game of the season, 30-26 in Montreal, and dropped both home games against Calgary last year. The Lions will have DB Stanley Franks and of S J.R. LaRose back in action for Week 2. Slot back Nick Moore, who dropped three passes, two of them possibly for TDs, is out with an elbow injury. Rookie Steven Black will replace him and showed great potential during training camp.

In any case, with Geroy Simon, Paris Jackson and youngsters Shawn Gore and Akeem Foster, QB Travis Lulay has many options when it comes to throwing the ball. In the loss against the Alouettes, Lulay completed 26-of-45 attempts with 366 yards and a TD.

The Stampeders secondary still must prove itself and that could play in the favor of B.C. The Lions have also shown some pop on special teams, especially with newcomer Tim Brown (191 yards on nine returns, one of them being a 97 yard TD).

      Pick: B.C.

      Saturday, July 9

Montreal Alouettes at Saskatchewan Roughriders (+3, 54.5)

Turnovers and a soft defense cost the Riders a loss against the surprising Edmonton Eskimos in their first game. Darian Durant proved once again he can help the team as much as hurt it. He was picked off three times, although gained 339 passing yards with two TDs. But to be honest, he will need better protection from his offensive line.

On the other side of the ball, DB John Eubanks, who replaced the injured Chris McKenzie, got burned for two touchdowns while the pass defense was almost non-existent. Safety James Patrick was caught off balance more than once.

None of this is good news with the Montreal Alouettes visiting. Anthony Calvillo completed 22-of-30 passes for 312 yards, three TDs and no interceptions, while Brendan Whitaker ran 17 times for 117 yards, in a 30-26 win over the Lions.

The Alouettes did lose excellent DB Jerald Brown early in that game (ankle) but they reactivated De Audra Dix and do have depth in the secondary starting with the resilient Jeff Hecht.

      Pick: Montreal

      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Edmonton Eskimos (-1, 52)

The Tiger-Cats played poorly and deserved to lose against Winnipeg at home last week. Quarterback Kevin Glenn completed only 18-of-31 attempts for 187 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Head coach Marcel Bellefeuille pulled him out of the game and Glenn felt disrespected.

Another possible crisis to manage involves talkative RB Avon Cobourne, who was seen speaking his mind to Arland Bruce after the latter took a stupid penalty.

The only positive note coming out of the opener is that the Tiger-Cats defense is once again a force to be reckoned with. It recorded five sacks and allowed fewer first downs and total yards than any other team in Week 1.

The Tiger-Cats probably have more talent but these Eskimos seemed to have better unity, despite the fact that they have 21 newcomers on the 42-player active roster.

Jason Barnes, whose career seemed in jeopardy because of serious injuries last year, caught five passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns in the 42-28 win against the Riders. Ricky Ray also showcased his skills with 294 yards passing with three TDs.

The Eskimos, who finished dead last in the West last year, showed great poise and lot of opportunism in Week 1. They actually dominated and all aspects of the game against Saskatchewan and CFL bettors should see them in a new light.

      Pick: Edmonton

Lady luck: Friday's best WNBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Liberty at San Antonio Silver Stars (-7.5, 163.5)

Both teams have had a week off after the Liberty handed San Antonio its second loss of the season with an 81-75 victory in the Big Apple. That’s more than enough time for the Silver Stars to get back on track.

They hit only 34 percent of their shots from the floor in that loss, down for their 45-percent season average. These Silver Stars are a deep bunch that can beat you a lot of different ways.

Take Danielle Adams for example. She just won Rookie of the Month honors for June, putting up 16.2 points and 4.7 rebounds off the bench.

"Defensively for a rookie, she really moves her feet and positions very well," San Antonio coach Dan Hughes said of Adams. "And offensively she gives you a unique weapon from the standpoint of you can really challenge post players to guard her away from the basket, yet she's strong enough inside to get some things done at the basket."

New York’s on a nice roll here, but we can’t back the Liberty with the Silver Stars returning home.

        Pick: Silver Stars

Phoenix Mercury at Tulsa Shock (9.5, 182.5)

Before we tackle this matchup, let’s recap the Shock’s last two games.

They were absolutely hammered 83-63 at Washington as a 7.5-point underdog and then came back to the comforts of home to get drilled 101-71 by Minnesota as a 8.5-point underdog, which put the club 5-12 against the spread in their last 17 games at home.

Now they have to take on Phoenix, which just hung 101 points on the board against Los Angeles and has covered in six of its last seven games overall.

This has the makings of a blowout written all over it and while you might be a bit worried about a backdoor cover after the Mercury regulars do their thing, it should still end up as a double-digit Phoenix victory.

And if you're feeling really sassy, we wouldn't scold you for throwing an over bet in a tasty little parlay.

        Pick: Mercury

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Streaking

Gio Gonzalez (8-5, 2.31 ERA), Oakland Athletics

Not long after being named to the AL All-Star team, Gonzalez put out another ho-hum seven-inning shutout of the Arizona Diamondbacks, striking out seven and walking three. That effort dropped his ERA to 2.31 on the year and to just 0.82 over his last four starts.

Oakland catcher Kurt Suzuki says the lefty is controlling his emotions better this season.

"Emotions aren't bad," Suzuki told MLB.com. "If you can control them and use them the right way, the way he does, it works. His emotions are because he cares so much. He wants to do so well and be so successful that sometimes they get the best of him. But now he's learning how to control them and express them in the right way."

Javier Vazquez (4-8, 5.64 ERA), Florida Marlins

The bad news is Vazquez gave up a couple of homers in his last outing. The good news is those are the only two runs he’s allowed over his last three starts.

We’ve seen solid stretches from the veteran in the past, though it’s hard to know when it may all fall apart for him.

“The life of my fastball is back, and I feel a lot better,” he told reporters this week. “Sometimes because my velocity wasn’t there, I would try to trick people. Now that my fastball is back, I’m trying to stay more aggressive, mix it up better.”

          Slumping

Jason Hammel (4-8, 4.31 ERA), Colorado Rockies

Hammel is coming off a terrible outing that saw him give up seven hits and five earned runs over just 3 2/3 innings in a 16-8 blowout loss to the Kansas City Royals. He labored through 67 pitches and gave up a pair of homers while walking a pair and striking out one.

Hammel has just a 53:39 strikeout-to-walk ratio, so when he’s missing his spots, he’s in big trouble. He has allowed at least four runs in three of his last four and is a pegged as a +115 underdog Friday.

Nick Blackburn (6-6, 4.02 ERA), Minnesota Twins

It’s hard to know what to expect from Blackburn this season. He started the year by losing four of his first five starts, then won five of six between the middle of May to the end of June and now he’s struggling again.

He has allowed 13 earned runs over his last 8 1/3 innings, giving up 19 hits over that span. The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder has struck out more than four batters just once in his last seven starts.

          MLB

          Friday, July 8

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Friday’s best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at Washington Nationals (-125, 8)

The Colorado Rockies couldn’t be happier to get the heck out of Atlanta after taking a four-game sweep on the chin and even though shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will likely be out for a few more days, Carlos Gonzalez may return from his wrist injury Friday.

The Rockies could certainly use the boost. They may have won eight of their last 10 in Washington, may have their work cut out for them in D.C. this time around.

The Nationals are doing a great job winning the games they’re supposed to, riding a 12-3 run in games in which they are favored. They’ve also managed to win 20 of their last 29 at home and are 8-1 in Jason Marquis’ last nine in front of the home crowd.

For now at least, it looks as though Davey Johnson is the right man for the Nats’ clubhouse.

"Davey's been wonderful for this team," F.P. Santangelo, the Nationals' TV color commentator, told ESPN recently. "The one thing he's done is make everyone feel included. I think the atmosphere in the clubhouse is different now."

          Pick: Nationals

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels (-160, 6)

Seattle Mariners rookie Blake Bevan did exactly what he was told in his first big-league start and ended up with a dominant seven-inning performance that saw him give up just a single run on three hits in a win over San Diego.

It helped that he was throwing to catcher Josh Bard, who also caught him in the minors. Word has it Bevan didn’t shake the veteran backstop off all night.

“Sometimes, you make it so complicated trying to trick guys and do all the stuff, you can throw the perfect trick pitch but if you throw it down the middle and it’s hanging, it doesn’t matter,” Bard told reporters. “We really talked to him about execution with his heater. He pitched in, he pitched out. He probably only threw 20 off speed pitches the whole game, and did a good job.”

It’s probably not going to be that easy every time he takes the hill, but with Ervin Santana sharing the mound with him, we’ll play under the tiny total.

          Pick: Under

Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind............

              13) RIP Dick Williams. Thanks.

If you read this website, you know I love the A's; became a fan when I was 5, back in 1965, because they spelled Catfish Hunter's name wrong on the back of his rookie baseball card (Tim Hunter, not Jim). There was no ESPN back then, no Internet, so when the A's moved to Oakland in 1968, it became a challenge to get boxscores-- usually got them when the afternoon paper came the next day (at 4:00 or so). .

              12) The A's were terrible in the mid-60's, but started to get better later in the decade; they contended for a while in '69, then had a horrible 1970, as nice guy manager John McNamara wasn't strong enough to act as a buffer between owner Charlie Finley and the players, especially Reggie Jackson. They needed a tough manager. Enter Dick Williams.

Williams had ended years of ineptitude in Boston in 1967, getting them in the World Series (they've only had six losing seasons since). He later led San Diego to the 1984 Series, so those are three teams with sorry pasts that he led to the World Series. But his best work was done in Oakland.

              11) Williams was a great manager, but not a nice person. "If you want me to be a prick, I can be a prick." was one of his first speeches to the team in 1972. He made 55 trips to the mound in the '72 World Series, after they had waived the two visit-to-mound rule for a year. A great strategist.

He turned a team that had been underachieving into a champion, making a certain 12-year old living in upstate New York very happy. For that I'll always be grateful; I'm so happy he got inducted into Cooperstown while he was alive. Very deserving. RIP Dick Williams. Thanks again.

              10) If I was Jose Reyes' agent, I'd have my eye on those crafty Mets, as the team stands to gain (in the long run) by keeping Reyes on the DL and reducing the pricetag for the free agent-to-be this winter. At some point this summer, Mets have to become sellers, since they get nothing should Carlos Beltran walk- they're not paying K-Rod $17M next season, so he has to go too. So they might as well sit Reyes and drive his price down.

              9) If I were choosing the eight guys from Home Run Derby, I'd go with these two teams of players (not necessarily All-Stars):
              AL: David Ortiz-Adam Dunn-Travis Hafner-Josh Hamilton
              NL: Ryan Howard-Mike Stanton-Wily Mo Pena-Prince Fielder

              8) Not sure what MLB plans to do with the A’s stadium issues, but the Oakland franchise is rotting on the vine; they drew 15,566 for a July 4 games with division rival Seattle, 11,537 less than any other July 4 game. Moving to San Jose would be good for the A’s, but the Giants, who already have their new stadium, are blocking the move due to antiquated territorial rules.

              7) ESPN bought the Wimbledon rights away from NBC, which is any good; anytime NBC loses any sports programming its good, because it’ll mean more live coverage of the event. NBC likes to show taped stuff to fabricate added excitement.

              6) TCU hired former Ole Miss/Arizona State coach Rob Evans as an assistant; you have to think that Evans will wind up being the head coach when the Horned Frogs move into the Big East in 2012-13. He was successful at Ole Miss and was turning things around at ASU but the program fell back when Ike Diogu left early for the NBA. Had Diogu stayed another year, Evans might well still be the coach in Tempe.

              5) I don’t see Eldrick Woods winning another golf tournament; not sure if his knee is sound enough to let him walk 18 holes, or practice as much as it takes to win. You also have to wonder if Woods wants to be in the limelight anymore, or if he enjoys golf as much now that he isn’t dominant anymore- they’re all legitimate questions.

              4) Alabama ain’t ducking anyone on the football field; they’re opening the 2012 season against Michigan in Dallas, and open the ’13 season against Virginia Tech in Atlanta. Lot of TV exposure right there.

              3) If Shawn Kemp Jr is anything like his father as a ballplayer, Washington Huskies got themselves a hell of player; the kid had originally committed to both Alabama/Auburn, but played two years of prep school instead, and will now play college ball in Seattle, where his dad once starred for the Supersonics.

              2) At 9:46 every morning, I get a text from the NFL, sending me content to watch on my cellphone. Truth is, the only thing I want from the NFL or its players right now is an announcement that I can sit in Graney’s at 1pm on September 11 and watch NFL games while eating chicken wings. That’s all I want from them.

              1) Speaking of the lockout, rumor has it that some team(s) are violating the no-contact rules with their players. If I was investigating which team violated those rules, I’d start my search in Foxboro, since they already shown to have little regard for the league's rules.

                  Week 2

                  Friday, July 8

Toronto (1-0) @ Winnipeg (1-0)-- Underdogs covered all four games in CFL last week, winning three SU. Argonauts were 3-0 LY vs Winnipeg, winning by 2-4-29 points, taking 36-34/37-8 wins here. Argos got win in season opener at Calgary, running ball for 120 yards. Bombers shut out Hamilton in second half last week, picking off four TigerCat passes.

Calgary (0-1) @ BC Lions (1-0)-- Road team won all three series games LY, with average total of 57. Stampeders won 27-22/48-35 decisions on this field. Lions tossed 19 incomplete passes last week, most in CFL- when you only have three downs to get 10 yards, thats a bad stat. Calgary gave up 120 yards on ground in home loss to Toronto last week.

                  Saturday, July 9

Montreal (1-0) @ Saskatchewan (0-1)-- This is a rematch of Alouettes' 21-18 win in last fall's Grey Cup, after home team had won both series meetings during regular season; Als had 152 yards rushing last week, in opening 30-26 win over BC Lions, bad news for Roughrider defense that gave up 113 rushing yards in 42-28 home loss to Eskimos.

Hamilton (0-1) @ Edmonton (1-0)-- Home side won both games in LY's series, with TiCats lost 37-35 decision here; Hamilton got blanked LW in second half of 24-16 home loss to Winnipeg- Bombers picked off four of their passes, and TiCats changed QBs late in game.
