Wednesday’s betting tips: SP Hughes returns for NYY

    Who’s hot

MLB: The under is 15-6 in Wade Davis’ last 21 starts for Tampa Bay.

MLB: Milwaukee is 9-2 in Yovani Gallardo’s last 11 home starts.

    Who’s not

MLB: Washington has won just two of its last nine home games against the Cubs.

MLB: Colorado has won just three of its last 11.

    Key stat

4 – New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter is just four hits away from the 3000 milestone after picking up a pair against the Indians Tuesday night. Jeter and the Yankees face off against Cleveland’s Justin Masterson on Wednesday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Asdrubal Cabrera, Cleveland Indians – The All-Star shortstop is considered day-to-day after spraining his right ankle Tuesday. Cabrera is hitting .293 with 14 homers this season.

    Game of the day

Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals (-125, 9)

    Notable quotable

"I can safely say that there's not going to be one player or person or staff member from the United States that's going to say, 'We want a tie.' We want to win this game because we want to keep the momentum going forward. Obviously, you have to be smart. We want to get some of those 90-minute players some rest if we can do that. But first and foremost, we want to make sure and secure the first place out of this group." – Abby Wambach of the U.S. women’s World Cup team about Wednesday’s matchup with Sweden. The U.S. side is favored at about -185.

    Notes and tips

Phil Hughes comes off the DL to start for the first time since mid-April, when he went on the shelf with the dreaded “dead arm.” He won 18 games for the Yanks last year, but was hammered early this season before the team shut him down. "There was never really a point where I felt like it was gone for good," Hughes said. "It was certainly disheartening to have to go through that and not know what's going on. But I don't think there was ever a point where I doubted it was ever going to come back." Reports from the minors have him hitting 94 mph, so maybe his problems are behind him.

The 22-year-old sensation Yani Tseng is currently set as the favorite to win the Women’s U.S. Open which begins Thursday at Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Oddsmakers have her set around +400 after she won the LPGA Championship, becoming the youngest player to win four Grand Slam tournaments. Cristie Kerr is on her heels at +650, while Suzann Pettersen and Jiyai Shin check in at +1100.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Jason Vargas (6-5, 3.57), Seattle Mariners

Vargas completed his third complete-game shutout in six starts with a 6-0 blanking of the San Diego Padres the last time he took the ball.

“Vargas was outstanding tonight,” manager Eric Wedge said. “He was hitting his spots all night long. He did a good job of mixing it up whether it be left to right on the plate, up and down, add and subtract from velocity. He just did a great job.”

His control isn’t too shabby either. He was walked three or more batters just three times in 17 starts this season.

Jair Jurrjens (11-3, 1.89 ERA), Atlanta Braves

Jurrjens just picked up the first complete-game shutout of his career and it was a doozy. He gave up just one hit and walked a batter while striking out eight in a 4-0 win over Baltimore.

Jurrjens has allowed more than two earned runs only twice this season and now leads the NL in ERA and is tied with Roy Halladay for the NL lead with 11 victories.

      Slumping

Josh Collmenter (4-5, 3.17 ERA), Arizona Diamondbacks

Collmenter started off this season like a house on fire, chucking a pair of shutouts in his first two starts and compiling a 1.05 ERA over his first six trips to the hill.

Since then it’s been all downhill. He has allowed at least five runs in three of his last four outings and has lost each of those starts.

Bronson Arroyo (7-7, 5.49), Cincinnati Reds

Arroyo has managed to win two of his last three starts, but he has to be the most unpredictable pitchers in the bigs.

After firing an eight-inning gem two weeks ago against Toronto, he gave up five runs and four homers in a 10-5 win over Baltimore and was then hammered for eight earned runs and three dingers in an 8-2 loss to Cleveland.

He has now allowed an NL-high 24 jacks this season.

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals (-120, 9)

The St. Louis Cardinals welcomed Albert Pujols back to the locker room before Tuesday’s game and word is they’ll have him actually back on the field Wednesday, about a month ahead of schedule from a broken wrist.

Pujols makes a habit of shocking everyone, so we shouldn’t be overly surprised about his speedy return, but you have to wonder if he’s coming back too soon.

The Cardinals headed into Tuesday’s game atop the NL Central and the club managed to hold it together without him at 6-7.

"He's not in the starting lineup because he hasn't had a rigorous workout and I feel like it would be good for him to get one of those, and then play tomorrow," manager Tony La Russa told reporters ahead of Tuesday’s game. "I just try to use common sense."

Whether coming back this early and with the All-Star break so close can be debated, but the boost in confidence and quality he’ll give the team can’t.

        Pick: Cardinals

Baltimore Orioles at Texas Rangers (-190, 9.5)

Heading into Tuesday night’s game against the Rangers, the Orioles had last six of their last seven and scored more than four runs only twice during that span.

Then they released news that Luke Scott was hitting the DL with a right labrum tear. While Scott is hitting only .223 with nine homers, it remains to be seen if Felix Pie and Nolan Reimold can fill the void.

The shoulder has been bothering Scott for a while and now that it’s become obvious that he can’t play through it any longer, he’s just hoping to avoid surgery following an MRA on Friday.

“I do not want to be cut on. I want to avoid surgery at all costs if I can,” Scott told reporters. “But at the end of the day, if it turns out that surgery is the best option, it’s necessary that I have to do it, then of course I have to do it. But I am still on my knees praying and just hoping that I don’t have to have surgery.”

Baltimore’s offense didn’t exactly need this right now and should be in tough Wednesday. We’ll stick with the under and hope Jeremy Guthrie holds it together.

        Pick: Under

The six worst road teams in baseball and when to bet them
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nineteen of the 30 teams in Major League Baseball have better records at home than they do on the road, which isn’t a surprising stat.

However, some teams have home/road splits that are highly skewed, meaning a closer evaluation might lead us to profitable betting opportunities.

Here is a look at six of the worst road teams in baseball and how you should bet them.

Milwaukee Brewers (29-12 home, 16-29 road)

Milwaukee has the best home record in baseball and one of the league’s worst road records, despite being four games above .500. Only the Cubs and Astros have won fewer road games than the Brewers in the National League.

Over the last three years, the Brewers have been about a .500 team on the road, and you’d have to go back to 2007 to find the last time they were this bad. That year, they finished 83-79 overall but were just 32-49 on the road.

How to bet them: Play against the Brewers when they’re road underdogs, as they have posted a 6-18 record as pups. Then again, you might have success fading them as a favorite, too. The Brewers are an MLB-worst minus 12.96 units in road games.

Washington Nationals (25-15 home, 18-28 road)

The Nationals have been one of the league’s biggest surprises, but their road performance, as bad as it is, is actually better than usual.

Since 2008, the Nats have finished 28-53, 26-55 and 25-56 on the road. There’s a good chance they’ll be able to exceed their previous road win totals by mid-August.

How to bet them: If you’re looking for a strong situational bet, fade the Nats when Livan Herndandez (5.13 road ERA) is on the mound. They are just 1-8 and down 6.53 units in his road starts.

Kansas City Royals (23-24 home, 11-27 road)

After winning three of their first five road games to start the season, the Royals have since lost 25 of 33. The main reason for the Royals’ struggles has been their disastrous pitching staff, which has an MLB-worst 5.12 road ERA.

The Royals have won a handful of games as +150 road dogs or more, but are still down 9.49 units away from home for the season - worst in the American League.

How to bet them: Fade the Royals in the first game of a road series. They are just 4-10 in series openers and lost seven in a row at one point this season.

Oakland Athletics (22-20 home, 16-28 road)

Only the Royals have lost more money on the road than the Athletics, who are down 9.48 units so far in 2011.

Losing nine of 10 in an East Coast trip in early June didn’t help the A’s, who have had to play a brutal road schedule. They had road series against the Giants, Phillies and Mets in interleague play.

How to bet them: Getaway day hasn’t been too bad for the A’s. They are 7-7 in the final game of a road series, with four of their seven wins coming as underdogs.

Minnesota Twins (19-18 home, 18-28 road)

Minnesota has struggled to score runs all season, and that’s been especially true on the road. The Twins, whose 316 runs scored is the third worst in the AL, are averaging just 3.69 runs on the road.

In a recent five-game road losing streak, the Twins managed to score just eight runs.

How to bet them: The under has hit in 25 of the Twins’ 46 road games so far, and 15 of those have come in Twins losses.

Baltimore Orioles (22-22 home, 14-24 road)

No team has a tougher division to play road games in than the Orioles, whose easiest trip involves crossing the border to play the Blue Jays.

The Orioles haven’t won more than 35 road games since 2005, when they finished 74-88 overall and 38-43 on the road.

How to bet them: Don’t be afraid to take the O’s as heavy dogs, as they’ve pulled off some surprises so far. Five of their 14 road wins have come as dogs of +145 or more, including wins over the Rays as +166 and +173 underdogs.

NHL free agency: Three biggest winners and losers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was, by almost any measurable criteria, a weak NHL free-agency class that hit the open market on July 1.

But that didn’t stop teams from around the league overspending like drunken sailors for players of modest talent. The dozens of players that signed big deals are the big winners, but in terms of teams we offer our top three on either side of the ledger.

            WINNERS

            Washington Capitals

Not only did the Capitals get better, they got more fiscally responsible - a huge accomplishment in a free-agent period that saw just about every team involved overpay.

Getting goaltender Tomas Vokoun for $1.5 million per season seemed like a steal. Not only that, they were able to deal another underachiving goaltender, Semyon Varlamov, to the Avalance for a first and second-round pick.

This was a free agency period where the subtle moves may have been the best ones, so acquiring feisty winger Joel Ward and defenseman Roman Hamrlik are nice fits to a roster that is already quite deep.

The Caps remain one of the best teams in the NHL, but given their lack of playoff success, change continues to be necessary. General manager George McPhee did just that and, unlike many of his peers, did so responsibly.

            Dallas Stars

With the pending loss of their best player, centre Brad Richards, the Stars entered free agency as guaranteed losers. General manager Joe Nieuwendyk wasted little time pulling the trigger, despite the uncertainty with the ownership group in the Lone Star State.

Did he hit a home run? No, but other than the player he was losing, there were too few superstars in this year’s class.

So, days after being nominated for induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Nieuwendyk added players that have a shot at being useful in Michael Ryder, Adam Pardy, Vernon Fiddler, Radek Dvorak and Sheldon Souray.

None of them are game changers, but this was a good year to add depth.

            Philadelphia Flyers

With the Flyers shipping star forwards Mike Richards and Jeff Carter out of town a week earlier, it was a given that GM Paul Holmgren was going to be busy. And he didn’t waste any time doing so.

It all started by getting goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, in the latest attempt to solve decades of goaltending drama. Whether the quirky Russian is the answer remains to be seen, but he is a considerable upgrade over the revolving door that was in place during the team’s embarrassing playoff run.

Holmgren also made sure he aggravated cross-state rival Pittsburgh by netting aging-but-dangerous forward Jaromir Jagr, who is returning to North America for an NHL swan song. Philadelphia also added winger Max Talbot (another former Penguin) and Andreas Lilja.

Will Jagr and Talbot replace Carter and Richards? No. But it’s a nice start.

            LOSERS

            Buffalo Sabres

Some will tell you that the Sabres were big winners by acquiring Ville Leino and Christan Ehrhoff. But just because a gung-ho owner is eager to open his wallet, as billionaire Terry Pegula did, it doesn’t make them smart moves.

Adding Ville Leino and Christian Ehrhoff for $4 million and $4.5 million respectively will make the team better for sure, but not dramatically so. Because of that, the cost seems a little high. Adding Robyn Regehr is another good move, but also a pricey one.

            Montreal Canadiens

Heading into free agency, the Habs were already guaranteed to lose a pair of defenseman in Roman Hamrlik and James Wisniewski. So the Canadiens went the other way and beefed up their scoring attack by nabbing Erik Cole.

Cole is coming off a decent 52-point season in Carolina, but shelling out $4.5 million over four seasons seems high in both term and dollars. An aging Cole has been inconsistent late in his career and probably benefited most from playing alongside Eric Staal last season.

With Carey Price as their confirmed starter in net, the Habs signed Peter Budaj has his backup. Surely there was someone better out there.

            Colorado Avalanche

Congratulations to the Avs for landing a starting goaltender in Semyon Varlamov. He’s a skilled man at his position but one that tends to disappear come playoff time. Colorado also had to give up what are likely to be high first and second-round picks to Washington.

It didn’t get much better from there as the Avalanche, who a week earlier let puck-moving defenseman John-Michael Liles get away to Toronto, signed defenseman Jan Hejda to a four-year $13 million deal. Winger Chuck Kobasew is a decent depth forward but, at $2.5 million per season, it seems Colorado overpaid, considering it’s not tough to find such players.

                Wednesday's six-pack

-- Dodgers are a depressing team; they've lost five of their last six home games, have been outscored 21-4 in last four games overall.

-- Jeff Karstens is 7-4, 2.55 after Pirates beat Houston 5-1; shouldn't a guy with a 2.55 ERA be on the All-Star team?

-- Albert Pujols was activated but didn't play in Cardinals' 8-1 win over Cincinnati; he is expected to start for the Redbirds Wednesday.

-- Mark Ellis is 11-22 with eight runs scored, seven RBI in five games for the Rockies. Go figure.

-- Brewers are 1-7 in their last eight games, allowing 59 runs.

-- Joe West tossed Jim Leyland in the 7th inning, Justin Verlander in the 8th of a 1-0 Anaheim win, where Angels' DH Bobby Abreu got tossed by Angel Campos in the first inning. Lot of activity for a 1-0 game.

                ******************

Wednesday's List of 13: Laying out an alternative to the NBA

The NBA has become a hybrid of real basketball and Streetball, a game totally dependent on stars instead of real teams. If a game is tied at the end and the star doesn’t take the last shot, he’s chastised for not wanting to be “The Man”. So with the NBA headed towards a nuclear winter, we present an alternative, the People’s Basketball League (PBL).

-- Six divisions of five teams each, pretty much like the NBA is now.

-- 64-game schedule, a 22% reduction. Less games equals more practice time, better preparation by coaches, better-rested players and a more enjoyable product overall.

-- Play the other four teams in your division six times each (24), other teams in your conference twice each (20) and teams from other conference once each, except for one division a year, where you play those teams twice, giving you 20 non-conference games for a total of 64.

-- Playoff series are best of 5.

-- In first round of playoffs, #3-4 seeds get three of five games at home. #2 seeds get four of five games at home. #1 seeds get all five games at home.

-- The game itself won’t change too much, except we’re eliminating the goofy rule where you can call timeout and move the ball up into the frontcourt. It’s a rule designed to artificially create excitement late in games. Bad rule.

-- No more “first foul in last 2:00” BS at the end of quarters. Fifth foul of a quarter puts you over the limit and you shoot FTs from that point on.

-- No more illegal defenses; you can play any defense you like; this will help less talented teams and give them a better chance to beat the more talented teams. Who wants to pay to see a game where one team has almost no chance to win? This rule will promote more passing and better team play.

-- Teams have only two time-outs a half, in addition to media time-outs. They carry over.

-- As far as travelling and palming ball are concerned, the game will be officiated like it’s a college game. Rules will be enforced. People don’t pay to see the refs, but they do pay to see good basketball.

-- $40M salary cap per team, 15 guys. $400,000 minimum salary, $10M maximum. If you have five guys earning the minimum, two earning the maximum, that leaves $18M for the other eight guys. That’s over $2M a guy. Its enough.

-- High school graduates can be drafted; team has to decide on August 31 whether they want that player for that season; if not, the player goes and plays in college, but the NBA team pays for his scholarship. No college player can be called up to the PBL until the NCAA tournament is over.

n Team retains the high school player’s rights for four years; at that point, if the PBL team doesn’t want him, he becomes a free agent can sign with anyone.

-- 3,000 tickets per game have to cost no more than $25 apiece.

-- Commercials, ad campaigns will promote the team, not individuals.

-- Draft will be moved from city-to-city, much like the NHL does it. Each franchise will have its executives on the arena floor during the draft, so the whole league is basically present at the draft.

-- Any replay decisions will come from the league headquarters, where a war room is set up to review plays.

Here is the layout of the league and its six divisions.........

                Eastern Conference
                Northeast-- New York-Boston-New Jersey-Philly-Washington

                Southeast-- Atlanta-Charlotte-Memphis-Miami-Orlando

                Great Lakes-- Chicago-Cleveland-Detroit-Milwaukee-Toronto

                Western Conference
                Southwest-- Dallas-Houston-New Orleans-Oklahoma City-San Antonio

                Western-- Denver-Phoenix-Portland-Seattle-Utah

                Pacific-- Anaheim-Las Vegas-Los Angeles-Oakland-Sacramento
