Lady luck: Sunday’s best WNBA bet
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Storm at Washington Mystics (+4, 146)

The defending WNBA champions Seattle Storm are hugely disappointing their backers. The club owns one of the worst ATS (against the spread) marks in the league and it’s pretty clear why.

Starting pivot and three-time WNBA MVP, Lauren Jackson, is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery on her left hip. Seattle has only played two games with Jackson but, to be fair, didn’t look herself even when she was on the court.

The Storm were told there’s a good chance Jackson could return before the end of the season but other players will have to step up and produce until Jackson can get back on the court.

Former Shock All-Star Swin Cash is chipping in with her best season since her rookie campaign and Sue Bird is doing her thing. Bettors might want to hold off on backing the Storm until oddsmakers properly adjust Seattle’s odds without Jackson.

The Washington Mystics aren’t much but it seems like a stretch that they are 4-point home underdogs against the Jackson-less Storm. Remember, the Mystics are 3-0 ATS in their last three games against Seattle.

    Pick: Washington

Canadian bacon: CFL Week 1 betting preview and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-7, 52.5)

The Roughriders will start the 2011 season without two key elements on offense: Robbie Baggs (injury) and Andy Fantusz (NFL). But Darian Durant can still count on Dressler, Clermont and Getzlaf to move the chains and score points.

If Durant can limit his interceptions, the Roughriders will slaughter the Eskimos, who will certainly once again be the poor parents of the CFL this season.

Quarterback Ricky Ray will suffer again behind an offensive line that seems has vulnerable as it was last year. The Eskimos defensive squad also appears to be one of the weakest in the league, despite the reliability of a few players like DT Jermaine Reid and DB Chris Johnson.

      Pick: Roughriders 42, Eskimos 16

Sunday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        STREAKING

Cliff Lee (9-5, 2.66 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

This lefty just finished off a one of the most memorable months for a pitcher in baseball history. Cliff Lee went 5-0 with three complete game shutouts and a 0.21 ERA in June. That ERA is the sixth-lowest in the National League for a pitcher in a month since the statistic began being tabulated in 1912, according to ESPN.com’s Stats & Info.

Yeah, so dude’s been okay, I guess.

"It's been a good run, no doubt about it," Lee told the Associated Press after tossing a complete game two-hitter at Fenway Park against arguably the best batting order in baseball. "I've had a few in my career, but I don't look back and compare them. I want to throw a shutout every time out there. I never want to give up a run."

        SLUMPING

Rick Porcello (6-6, 5.06 ERA), Detroit Tigers

Manager Jim Leyland desperately needs someone besides Justin Verlander to produce from his starting rotation. Porcello, along with a few others, isn’t delivering.

He’s been shelled for 28 hits and 18 runs over his last 11 and 1/3 innings of work (that’s a 14.30 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP for those of you scoring at home).

"He threw some bad pitches that they hit, and he threw some good pitches that they hit," Detroit manager Jim Leyland told reporters after the Mets tagged Porcello for seven runs in his last outing. "They were aggressive and they beat us up pretty well."

The big righty just isn’t fooling any hitters these days. He’s struck out just two batters over his last three starts and he’s still throwing his fastball over 70 percent of the time, according to ESPN’s Insider Edge.

At least over bettors can take solace knowing this guy knows how to put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard. The over is 4-0 in his last four appearances.

Zack Greinke (7-3, 5.63 ERA), Milwaukee Brewers

Greinke’s numbers are more difficult to figure out than a rubick’s cube wrapped in an enigma. The former Cy Young winner has close to an 8-1 strikeout to walk ratio and the Brew Crew are 8-3 in all games he’s started this season.

But what about that ugly ERA and the fact that the over is 8-1-2 in his starts with Milwaukee? You kind of get the sense that he’s been more lucky than good so far.

"It was just a real bad game," Greinke said after surrendering seven runs in just two innings of work against the Yankees. "I wasn't executing anything, and when I did just a couple of times, they took some good pitches, and I wasn't able to make another good pitch after that. I couldn't pitch any worse than I did."

Sunday Night Baseball: Dodgers at Angels
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Los Angeles Angels (-140, NA)

Interleague play wraps up for the 2011 season tonight in the battle of Los Angeles, with the Dodgers visiting the Angels to cap a three-game series under the ESPN spotlight. Let’s take a look at how things are shaping up for both teams:

          BATTER BEWARE

There’s apparently no love lost between these Southern California rivals, at least if Friday night’s series opener was any indicator. Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda beaned almost as many batters as he allowed to get hits – two hit batsmen, three hits allowed in seven shutout innings of a 5-0 victory.

Kuroda hit Angels right fielder Torii Hunter in the first inning, and Hunter had to exit in the second inning with a bruised left hand. X-rays were negative, and Hunter is day-to-day. In the seventh inning, Kuroda came in on Mark Trumbo to start the at-bat, then hit Trumbo with the second pitch, leading the umpire to warn both teams that no more hit batters would be tolerated.

“You’d like to give the guys the benefit of the doubt,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia told The Associated Press, “but he almost hit Mark with his first pitch. He got out of the way of it, and Mark was way off the plate.

“The second time, it was a laser right at him. So I think the intent was obvious there.”

          Kuroda disagreed.

          “They’re all accidents,” he said.

          LET’S BE FRANK

The Dodgers’ financial situation continues to regress under owner Frank McCourt, and the questions seem to be unending about how that issue is affecting on-field play. Los Angeles is 37-46 with a week to go before the All-Star break, sitting fourth in the National League West.

Manager Don Mattingly said just stringing together a few more wins could help quiet all the noise about ownership.

“I know it gets old having to talk about it and hear about it,” Mattingly told Yahoo!Sports. “I guess as the noise gets louder, it’s probably harder for me to say, ‘Let’s go play ball.’ It’s tougher because we’re not winning enough games. When we don’t win games, everyone wants to talk about (the financial problems) instead.

“If we were winning enough games, the talk would be, ‘This club is getting through it’ and all that. We just have to win more games. The less we win, the more we talk about what’s going on with the club off the field.”

The Dodgers have won two in a row in this rivalry, taking last Sunday’s series finale at Dodger Stadium along with Friday night’s opener at Angel Stadium. But that still gave them just a 3-7 mark in their last 10 games against Scioscia’s ballclub.

          RAFAEL’S RETURN

The Dodgers could get some good news ahead of Sunday’s game. Shortstop Rafael Furcal, who went on the disabled list June 4 with a strained left oblique muscle, finished a stretch of six rehab games and is expected to be reinstated Sunday.

          NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

The Dodgers send out Chad Billingsley (7-6, 4.22 ERA) for this series finale, and that’s been a good sign lately. The Dodgers are 5-2 in Billingsley’s last seven starts, with the right-hander getting the decision in all seven outings. On Monday at Minnesota, he was sharp, hurling six scoreless innings in a 15-0 rout.

The Angels, meanwhile, are having a hard time winning behind Ervin Santana (3-8, 4.08). They’d lost four in a row backing the righty before Monday’s 4-3 win over Washington, in which Santana allowed two solo homers in eight solid innings but got a no-decision.

The Dodgers have won their last five Sunday outings, but they are on interleague slides of 8-18 overall, 18-40 against winning teams and 14-41 on the road. They are also just 3-9 in their last dozen against the American League West.

On the flip slide, the Halos (42-41) have won six of their last eight overall and are on interleague streaks of 37-16 overall, 37-16 against the NL West, 16-7 against losing teams and 4-1 with Santana taking the ball

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at New York Mets (+105, 8.5)

Alex Rodriguez doesn’t know how to open his mouth without saying something stupid. Even compliments seem awkward when uttered off his lips. A-Rod recently told the New York press members that Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is baseball's best player.

Now there’s nothing wrong with respecting an opposing player, but if you’re going to shower a guy with the “best player in the world” tag, shouldn’t you be doing that with someone on your team – especially when you play for the Yankees and you play alongside like nine or 10 All-Stars every day?

Despite a week filled with A-Rod making bad headlines (Rodriguez was named in an illegal, high-stakes, celebrity, poker game), the Yankees keep marching on. Entering Saturday’s games, the Bronx Bombers have won six straight and covered the runline in each of those contests too.

The Mets are sending out R.A. Dickey to the mound, but it doesn’t seem like even a knuckleballer can slow down the Yanks’ offensive attack.

            Pick: Yankees

Baltimore Orioles at Atlanta Braves (-170, 7.5)

The Braves are playing some of their best baseball this season and there are reasons to think things will only get better for Tomahawk choppers. Jason Heyward, the club’s most talented player, hit a home run on Friday and snapped a 33-game homer-less drought.

Heyward has been back since the middle of June but has been moved around in the lineup because of his inability to knock in runs. The outfielder finished Friday’s contest with two RBIs, pushing his total up to six since returning to the lineup.

"I know I can't get it all back in one game or one series," Heyward told the Associated Press after the win against Baltimore. "I've been swinging the bat pretty well and feeling pretty comfortable."

That’s bad news for the Braves’ opponents.

            Pick: Atlanta

-- Cantor Gaming has released a pointspread on all 256 regular season NFL games for this fall, assuming of course, they'll all be played.

-- Super Bowl loser (Pittsburgh this year) is 0-11 vs spread in the next season's opener, since 2000.

-- Steelers are listed as an underdog in two of their first three games, but are favored to win their last 13. Big Ben's foot better be OK.

-- Super Bowl winners (Green Bay) are 7-1-2 vs spread in their last ten season openers; Packers are -5.5 in their opener against the Saints.

-- Detroit covered seven of its eight home games last season.

-- There are only three road favorites in Week 1 this year; Eagles (-3.5) at St Louis, Giants (-3) at Washington, Patriots (-4) at Miami.

                *******************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

                13) I was once head coach of a Little League team for four years, which we'll talk about some other day, but one thing I remember about it was how the season changed once the All-Star team was announced. Kids who got chosen to be All-Stars suddenly cared a lot less about their team in the regular season. It occasionally caused a rift in the team. Wonder if things like that happen in the major leagues?

                12) Reason I mention it is that the major leagues unveil their teams for the All-Star Game Sunday at noon; some will be thrilled to make it, maybe for the first time, others will be disappointed. Would be interesting to know, since every team has to be represented, how the manager of a lesser team handles it when one of his guys is chosen, in the case where there might not be a clear-cut choice. Its a part of managing we don't think of much.

                11) Diamondbacks have a pitcher named Alberto Castillo who spent just under six years pitching in independent leagues, and in two other years, he didn't play at all. The 36-year old Cuban should write a book someday to document his journey to the major leagues-- he finally made it in 2008, pitching in 62 games over three seasons for Baltimore. What a study in determination he is; hard not to root for the guy.

                10) Arizona broadcaster Tom Candiotti won 151 games in his 16-year big league career, but his first season as a pro was played for an independent league team in Victoria, BC that was owned by someone who had ties to Saturday Night Live.

Candiotti told the story on air Friday night how Bill Murray showed up and spent the last two weeks of the season with the team in Canada and suited up for games as a coach. Now that must've been something.

                9) In first two games of their series in Houston, Red Sox were outscored 7-5 by the Astros in innings 1-6, but they outscored Houston 12-2 from the 7th inning on. You need a strong bullpen to beat teams who take a lot of pitches and also have skilled hitters, which is Boston in a nutshell.

                8) Mets' pitcher Dillon Gee worked in the parking lot in Arlington, Texas for Ranger games when he was a teenager, which is why it was suggested that he might have been more fired up for his start last Sunday against the Rangers than he was for Saturday's Subway Series game.

                7) Very rough day for my fantasy team Saturday, as both Jose Reyes and Victor Martinez left with injuries. Well, Reyes technically doesn't have an injury, but his hamstring got a little tight. This may or may not be the best time to bring up that the Bruins' Milan Lucic played last two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a broken foot. I'm just sayin'.......

                6) Too bad about Reyes, who would the NL MVP if they voted today; he has reached base safely in the first inning in his last eight games.

                5) When Buster Posey comes back from his knee injury sometime in '12, he'll still be working on a 13-game hitting streak, which right now is the second-longest active streak in the major leagues.

                4) On May 21, Madison Bumgarner gave up hits to the first eight Twins he faced, and all of them scored, one of the worst starts, if not the worst, in major league history. In two starts since then, Bumgarner has given up two runs in 14.1 IP, quite a comeback by him.

                3) Ted Simmons (Cardinals/Brewers) and Terry Kennedy (Padres/O's) are the only two catchers to start an All-Star Game for both leagues.

                2) Roy Halladay returned to Toronto and beat his old team 5-3 Saturday, using 110 pitches to throw a complete game. Before the game, Blue Jay fans gave him a 90-second standing ovation as he took the mound.

                1) Major screwup in San Diego's 1-0 win at Seattle, as Cameron Maybin scored the game's only run after walking on only three balls. Scoreboard had the count wrong, the ump said his indicator had it right, but no one objected as Maybin trotted to first, so ump Phil Cuzzi assumed he was wrong, but he wasn't. Seattle's TV crew showed Cuzzi close-up later in the game, and he didn't appear to have an indicator in either hand.

This game was 10th time in Cuzzi's last 12 behind the plate that a game was decided by one run. Under is 4-0-1 in his last five games behind the plate, which would be an interesting fact if gambling was legal. Both the games he worked this week ended up being 1-0 games.
