Wednesday’s betting tips: Buehrle owns interleague

    Who’s hot

MLB: The over is 20-7 in Baltimore’s last 27 interleague games.

MLB: Atlanta was 6-2 in its last eight heading into Tuesday’s action.

    Who’s not

MLB: Houston has won only five of its last 22 and only 13 home games all season.

MLB: Florida is 1-10 in its last 11 road games.

    Key stat

10-0 – Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle is 10-0 in his last 14 interleague starts and his 25 career wins in interleague play are an all-time best in the bigs. Buehrle and the White Sox are up against Ubaldo Jimenez and the Colorado Rockies Wednesday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Shaun Marcum, Milwaukee Brewers: Marcum will reportedly make his scheduled start Wednesday against the Yankees, but the club will keep him on a tight leash after his strained hip flexor limited him to just three innings of work in his last start. Manager Ron Roenicke says they’ll take it “inning by inning.”

    Game of the day

Cincinnati Reds at Tampa Bay (N/A)

    Notable quotable

"He was the guy I kind of expected to come through in that section. It happened, so it's going to be a tough match. I think he's got the weapons to be a huge threat on grass and make a run here. It's a tough draw, but I'm ready for it." – Roger Federer on Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, his opponent in the quarterfinals. Oddsmakers currently list Federer as a -715 favorite.

    Notes and tips

Rafael Nadal says he’s fit to go up against Mardy Fish in the Wimbledon quarterfinals after injuring his left foot in Monday’s win over Juan Martin del Porto. An MRI came back negative and he was able to make it through an hour-long practice on Tuesday, though it wasn’t the most strenuous of workouts. "We couldn't do much today because the court was quite damp and it was dangerous, but everything's fine," coach Toni Nadal told reporters. "For tomorrow, there will be no problem.”

The Boston Red Sox will change their lineup to make sure they have David Ortiz in action against the Phillies. Adrian Gonzalez is expected to move into the outfield so that Big Papi can play first base. Gonzalez has played just one MLB game in right field but Boston wants to have all of its big bats in the lineup against Philadelphia’s arms.

      Wednesday's six-pack

According to Joe Lunardi at espn.com. the six college basketball teams, who over the last five years have played the easiest non-conference schedules (with average schedule rank in parentheses)

      6) NC State (248.75); Figure they start most every season 0-4 (Duke/ Carolina games) so its easy to look for a way to pad your record. Will Mark Gottfried upgrade the Pack’s schedule?

      5) Colorado (250.75)—Found way to make the schedule easier; they left the Big X, joined the Pac-10.

      4) Nebraska (256.75)—Also skipped out on former Big 12; will be interesting fit in new Big Dozen. Cornhuskers have never won an NCAA tournament game, but they will in next couple years.

      3) Stanford (265.00)—Of the six teams on this list, only Nebraska had the same coach it does now when this survey started five years ago.

      2) Iowa State (277.75)—Have trouble getting teams to come into Hilton Coliseum, but have feeling Hoiberg will upgrade the schedule after he upgrades the talent level.

      1) Oregon State (318.75)—First Brother-in-Law Craig Robinson needs to starting winning some games in Corvallis, or he’s going to hurt the unemployment rate.

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff........

      13) Cliff Lee is dominant, allowing one run in his last 42 innings, none in his last 32 innings. Red Sox only had four baserunners Tuesday night.

      12) Sonny Gray, the Vanderbilt pitcher/A’s first round draft pick, started 19 of Vandy’s 66 baseball games this spring; he threw 126 innings, so he averaged getting 20 outs a game. From what I can tell, he faced 538 hitters this season, which is a lot—my question is this: If you’re the A’s, how do you handle him the rest of the summer? Let him chill until the Arizona Fall League? Lot of his innings were high stress- he threw 132 freakin’ pitches in his last start. He needs to be coddled, at least for a while.

      11) My A’s, since you asked, are an MLB-worst 11-16 in one-run games, much of which can be blamed on Andrew Bailey’s injury or former manager Bob Geren’s ineptitude as a skipper. I’m optimistic they’ll play better baseball the rest of the season.

Florida Marlins, by the way, have now lost their last 14 1-run decisions after winning 14 of their first 18- they look like a lifeless team.

      10) Two Red Sox, Jon Lester (10 HB in 436 BF) and John Lackey (nine HB in 292 BF) lead MLB in plunking hitters, but a San Diego reliever, Ernesto Frieri, has hit eight batters out of 171 he’s faced, so on average, Frieri is the game’s #1 headhunter so far this season.

      9) Jose Bautista has 22 HR’s, 47 RBI and a .470 on-base percentage, 21 points higher than anyone else (Miguel Cabrera .449). How did this guy get so good later in his career? Does it help to play in a smaller market, where there is a lot less pressure? I'm just asking........

      8) Giants are 19-0 in games where they have a 3+-run lead at some point in the game, which makes them 23-34 in all other games.

      7) I want to hear how San Diego trading Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox (Padres’ GM used to work for Boston) for minor leaguers was allowed. Gonzalez has 15 HR’s, 69 RBI and a .410 OB%.

San Diego has to pay SOMEBODY, don’t they? Why didn’t they pay Gonzalez, who is Mexican and a local hero? The guy they got back in return is a prospect, but come on, Gonzalez is a great player and the Red Sox got helped bigtime by a former employee, the Padres' new GM.

      6) Batters who see the most pitches per plate appearance: Granderson 4.43, Dunn 4.37, CSantana 4.33, Pedroia/Barton 4.31. Needs to be noted that Dunn and Barton are having terrible seasons-- Barton is back in the minor leagues.

      5) Batters who see the fewest pitches per plate appearance: OCabrera 3.05, Betancourt 3.08, VGuerrero/Cano 3.28, CPatterson/ArRamirez 3.30.

      4) Not only did Jim Riggelman quit halfway thru the season, blowing half his $600,000 salary, he also misses out on being part of the All-Star game, a good chance to do some much-needed networking. Cubs' skipper Mike Quade takes his place on manager Bruce Bochy's staff in Phoenix.

      3) Weird thing- I'm watching White Collar on USA Network; they've got an episode like the old movie The Sting, but the horseracing clips they're using, which are supposed to be from Saratoga/Fingerlakes, are obviously from overseas, since the horses are running clockwise around the track. In this country, horses run counter-clockwise.

      2) Kyrie Irving was the #1 pick in the NBA Draft; he averaged 27.5 mpg in only 11 games, scoring 17.5 ppg with 3.4 rpg, 4.3 apg. He shot 46% on 3-pointers, but who exactly were those 11 games against?

      1) He didn't play any ACC games; he played three NCAA games, against Hampton-Michigan-Arizona.........he scored 31 against Michigan State in a home game where he was 13-16 from the foul line. As far as I can tell, he did not play in one true road game, closest being vs Oregon in Portland, in the return home game for senior Kyle Singler.

Hardly the stuff of a #1 overall pick, but hopefully he'll stay healthy and the Cavaliers will improve next season.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Vance Worley (2-1, 2.83), Philadelphia Phillies

Like the Phillies really need another streaking pitcher, right?

Worley landed back in the rotation midway through this month and has been lights out since, posting a 0.82 ERA in a pair of starts. What you have to like about him is that even after he allowed only a single hit over six innings in a loss to Oakland, he still saw a lot of room for improvement.

"I need to stop sucking," the 23-year-old told reporters "But I need to get my first pitch over for strikes every time and then repeat that.I was throwing too many second-pitch balls today and falling behind there and that leads to throwing a lot of pitches."

Jordan Zimmerman (5-6, 2.85 ERA), Washington Nationals

Zimmerman has helped the Nationals to wins in each of his last five starts and has 10 consecutive quality starts heading into Wednesday’s test against the Angels.

He threw seven scoreless innings in a no-decision in his last trip to the hill, striking out four and walking one.

In his last three outings, Zimmerman’s sporting a 0.86 ERA.

              Slumping

Edinson Volquez (4-3, 5.77 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

As long as Volquez keeps walking batters, he’s going to be on the verge of disaster every time he takes the mound.

He lasted just 4 1/3 innings in his last outing, giving up four runs on seven hits while walking five batters. Those free passes have him heading into Tuesday’s start with 75 strikeouts and 50 walks in 73 1/3 innings this season.

Derek Lowe (3-6, 4.33 ERA), Atlanta Braves

After five runs on eight hits in an 11-2 blowout loss to the San Diego Padres, Lowe needs to rebound in a hurry.

He has now allowed 23 hits and 15 runs over his last three outings and hasn’t won a start since way back on May 6.

"Three wins through 17 starts is probably not what I had in mind leaving Spring [Training]," Lowe told reporters. "But that's where we are. Everybody else is pitching great. So that definitely makes it a little easier."

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Toronto Blue Jays (-170, 8)

Heading into Tuesday night’s action, the Cleveland Indians still sat atop the league’s money standings, but not by much.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have earned their supporters 9.87 units so far, just behind the 10.14 units Cleveland has earned. The Pirates continue to surprise teams – especially on the road, scoring 9.70 of those units as visitors.

Wednesday could provide another payday for Bucs bettors with Paul Maholm on the hill. He’s allowed just five runs over the last four starts.

There has been a bit of trade speculation swirling around Maholm now that he’s really hitting his stride, but it doesn’t sound like he wants to go anywhere.

"Now that we've gone through the rough times and it's starting to get good, it'd be tough to not be here whenever it turns over," Malholm told reporters.

                Pick: Pirates

Cincinnati Reds at Tampa Bay Rays (-165, 8)

If you’re a fan of dominant pitching, you ought to try to knock off work early to get a look at James Shields as his Rays take on the Reds in a matinee affair.

Shields has fired three consecutive complete games, allowing just one earned run while striking out 24 batters during that stretch. That adds up to some quiet days for the Rays bullpen.

"The other day we tried to knock down some cups of water," reliever J.P. Howell told reporters about what the pen does when Shields is on the mound. "Do some abs maybe. There's nothing much for us to do. He kills our incentives, I'll tell you that. If you've got any [appearance] incentives [in your contract] he's taking them all from us. He's an incentives killer for the bullpen, but that's definitely a beautiful thing."

It certainly is – especially for under bettors. We’re banking on Edinson Volquez calming down and Shields continuing to roll.

                Pick: Under
