Tuesday’s betting tips: Zito favored in return from DL

    Who’s hot

MLB: Eight of Philadelphia’s last 10 games have played under.

MLB: Detroit has won 13 of its last 17 as a favorite.

WNBA: San Antonio is 6-1 against the spread.

    Who’s not

MLB: Colorado is just 1-9 in Jason Hammel’s last 10 starts.

MLB: Houston has won just five of its last 22 overall and each of its last eight home games.

WNBA: Atlanta is 1-8 against the spread.

    Key stat

3.65 – The Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitching is experiencing a remarkable turnaround. Last season Pittsburgh’s starters owned a 5.28 ERA – worst in the majors. Through 77 games this season, the Pirates rank fifth in the NL with a 3.65 ERA.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Candace Parker, Los Angeles Sparks – Parker is currently listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game against Connecticut with a knee injury. The 6-foot-4 forward is averaging 17.7 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest. The Sparks are set as a 5.5-point underdog on the road.

    Game of the day

Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies (-125, 7) – Philadelphia’s Cliff Lee squares off against Boston’s Josh Beckett.

    Notable quotable

"I need be at my 100 percent. If not, going to be impossible against him. So I have to recover. Let's see what's going on and let's see how the MRI looks. And after, let's see if we have the chance to recover for Wednesday. I don't know." – Rafael Nadal after advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals despite limping through his win over Juan Martin del Potro. Nadal is a -770 favorite in his next match against Mardy Fish.

    Notes and tips

Veteran lefty Barry Zito will make his first start in more than two months after rehabbing a sprained right foot on Tuesday in the second game of San Francisco’s doubleheader with the Cubs and is set as a -115. Zito was struggling with a 6.24 ERA in three starts before the injury, but the team is encouraged with his work in the minors. "You do it for so many years and you don't miss a turn. Then you do, and you kind of forget all the joy that comes with being out there," Zito told MLB.com. "It just teaches you to really focus on your day-to-day responsibility and not get too caught up in the big picture. When you do that, things take care of themselves."

With the Williams sisters as well as top seed Caroline Wozniaki bowing out of Wimbledon, the outright odds for the women’s side of the draw took a major turn. Maria Sharapova is now pegged at +200 to win outright, followed by Petra Kvitova (+275), Victoria Azarenka (+500), and Sabine Lisicki (+700).

      Tuesday's six-pack

According to Joe Lunardi at espn.com. the six college basketball teams, who over the last five years have played the toughest non-conference schedules (with average schedule rank in parentheses)

      6) UConn (52.00)—They even go on the road now and then for non-conference games. Not everyone does.

      5) Michigan State (47.50)—Playing North Carolina on a aircraft carrier in San Diego this Veteran’s Day. Seriously.

      4) Duke (44.50)—Of course, none of these games are ever, ever on the road, but most of them are on national TV.

      3) Arizona (36.75)—Sean Miller has done such a good job maintaining this program, rumor has Herb Sendek looking to leave rival Arizona St.

      2) Georgetown (33.50)—His father used to be at the top of tomorrow’s (easiest schedules) list, but JTIII plays good teams out of conference, even though I’m not sure its helped him very much.

      1) Tennessee (19.50)- Am guessing Cuonzo Martin won’t be quite as ambitious a scheduler as Bruce Pearl was; am also guessing he won’t commit career suicide by lying to the NCAA.

      **************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

      13) Dodgers became second major league team within a year to file for bankruptcy protection (2010 Rangers), but the union has told agents the players will all be paid Thursday. They filed for bankruptcy in Delaware, obviously skirting a law(s) of some kind. What a debacle.

      12) Dodgers owe Marquis Grissom $2,719,146 this week; guy hasn’t played for them since 2002.

      11) Then there’s Kentucky coach John Calipari, whose new contract is eight years, $36.5M; wonder what the highest paid English professor at Kentucky makes? Of course, having solid Literature professors doesn’t fill Kentucky’s coffers like having a good basketball team does.

      10) Don’t believe me? According to The Big Lead, ten years ago, TCU averaged 5,000 applications a year to get into its school. This year, after three stellar football seasons in a row and with a move to the Big East looming, TCU had 19,000 applications. If you figure an application averages $50 and you say the football team is responsible for the 14,000 increase, that’s already $700,000 just in application fees that the football program has made for the school.

      9) By the way, CBSSports.com reported Monday that Calipari makes $68,000 more than all 13 football coaches in the MAC. Combined.

      8) The First Four, first leg of the NCAA tournament that springboarded VCU on its way to the Final Four, will stay in Dayton in 2013-14. Only way I think it’ll ever move is if the Dayton Flyers qualify for the First Four, and people perceive it as an unfair advantage to be able to play on their home court.

      7) So Jim Riggleman was right in that the Nationals had zero intention of keeping him as manager for 2012, but what did being right cost him? Wouldn’t he have been better off swallowing his pride, working the rest of the year, pocketing the $300,000 he has now forfeited, and then using his accomplishments this year to land another job? I don’t know what Riggleman will be doing this time next year, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be paying $300,000.

      6) Vegasinsider.com reports that the NBA accounts for roughly 13% of sportsbooks’ action, so if they don’t have a season next year, which could happen, that KO’s roughly one out of every seven dollars they have in action. Better than if it was the NFL, which accounts for 51% of their action. Losing a football season would be very bad for business.

      5) NBA lost 32 games to a labor dispute in 1998-99; hard to imagine this dispute not lasting as least as long as that one did.

      4) In a couple years, there will be lawyers here in New York getting rich by specializing in same sex divorce. Count on it.

      3) Angels played their 15th extra inning game of season Monday night, a 4-3 win over Washington. Only Atlanta has played more extra inning tilts this season- they've played 16. Angels are now 6-9 in extra frames.

      2) Standout QB Russell Wilson, who left NC State because they didn’t want him spending his summer playing minor league baseball, will enroll at Wisconsin and compete for the Badgers’ #1 QB job this fall. If Wilson shows up sober, he’ll win the job. This will be an interesting study, since he has only this year left to play college ball, but he is a terrific player.

      1) Pretty slick of Joe Torre to jump off the sinking ship that was the Dodgers last winter, figuring the McCourt divorce drama would turn ugly and pollute the whole franchise, which it has.

Wonder if Don Mattingly is enjoying his first year as a manager? Bad thing for him is when a new owner is found, chances are he’s going to want a more experienced manager, one with more name recognition (as a manager) who might sell some tickets, so this might be the only shot Mattingly gets at managing, and its not going well (36-44) with the team having a ton of external distractions.

Lady luck: Tuesday's best WNBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Silver Stars at Chicago Sky (-4, 162)

The Chicago Sky would be in a bad place without Sylvia Fowles.

All she has done so far is score 22.4 points per game to pace the WNBA while also leading her team in rebounding. But she can’t do it all herself.

Even though Fowles dropped 28 points and added 11 rebounds on Saturday, the Sky couldn’t avoid their first home loss of the season in falling 86-78 to the Phoenix Mercury.

Expect much of the same Tuesday. Fowles will get hers, but the Silver Stars are too deep and are making a killing for bettors.

Becky Hammon is the top gun and scores 18 per game, while three other Silver Stars are putting up at least 15 per contest.

They have covered in six of their seven games and are 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 road games dating back to last season.

        Pick: Silver Stars

Phoenix Mercury at Indiana Fever (-4, 175.5)

This is more like the Phoenix Mercury team we expected.

After dropping their first three games of the season, the Mercury have rebounded to win four straight, including a very impressive win at San Antonio – the Silver Stars’ only defeat of the year.

Phoenix is still putting a ton of points on the board, but what's different from the club’s slow start is it is actually defending a bit. The Mercury are plus-20 in rebound differential during their four-game winning streak and those opponents shooting only .391 from the floor.

What’s even more impressive is that Phoenix has won its last two without starting point guard Temeka Johnson, who sprained her ankle in the win over San Antonio. Her status for Tuesday’s game is currently questionable.

        Pick: Mercury

            Write-Up

            Tuesday, June 28

Remember as interleague play starts, there are DHs used in games in the American League ballparks; pitchers bat in National League parks.

AL teams are 89-84 vs NL teams so far in interleague play.
Over is 34-35-7 with a DH, 40-50-7 without one, 74-85-14 overall.

            Hot pitchers
-- Vogelsong is 4-1, 1.39 in his last nine starts.
-- Brewers won eight of last nine Greinke starts, scoring 57 runs. Garcia is 2-1, 2.61 in his last three starts.
-- Lee won his last four starts, allowing one run in 33 innings. Beckett is 4-1, 1.40 in his last nine outings.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Ryan Vogelsong (5-1, 1.86 ERA), San Francisco Giants

If Ryan Vogelsong isn’t a shoe-in to play for the National League in the All-Star Game, he can likely cement his spot with one or two good starts. Probably doesn’t hurt that he has Giants manager Bruce Bochy in his corner either.

You have to give it up to the guy though. He has allowed just eight runs over his last nine starts including a 5-1 win over the Twins in which he gave up a single run on four hits in his last outing.

"We had the right guy out there," Bochy said of Vogelsong after the win. "He's really done a great job pounding the strike zone. He had all his pitches working. There was no reason to think he wouldn't give us the innings we needed."

Cliff Lee (8-5, 2.87 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

How good has Cliff Lee been this month? He has booked two straight complete-game shutouts and has blanked his opposition in three of his last four trips to the mound.

His strikeouts numbers are a little off his usual pace and that’s just how he likes it.

“I really don’t want to strike guys out,” Lee said after striking out 10 Dodgers earlier this month. “I want to get them out in the first couple pitches. It’s good to strike guys out, but that means you’ve got to throw more pitches.”

Lee’s Phillies are set as -125 home favorites against Josh Beckett’s BoSox.

                Slumping

Felipe Paulino (0-5, 4.35 ERA), Kansas City Royals

Paulino gave up five runs and a pair of homers in his last start, but it wasn’t all bad.

He struggled through the early innings before settling down to retire 13 straight batters. He also struck out eight Rockies and walked just one over eight innings of work.

“We need our starting pitching to get settled down and not give up runs early — and give us a chance to get to our bullpen, which is as good of a bullpen as there is in the league,” Royals manager Ned Yost said last week.

Gavin Floyd (6-7, 4.31 ERA), Chicago White Sox

Floyd was looking pretty good in his last outing before he went out for the sixth inning against the Cubs. Then the wheels fell off.

Floyd was hammered in the sixth frame, turning a 3-2 advantage into a 6-3 deficit in a hurry.

“I think before the sixth he seemed a little down," manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters. “About the fifth inning, I think he started losing his command. He (had a) 3-2 (count) on a few players.”

Floyd is now 1-3 with a 4.96 ERA in his last five starts.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB run report: This week's best betting trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

                  HOT TEAM: Tampa Bay Rays

                  THIS SEASON: 44-34
                  LAST WEEK: 5-1
THIS WEEK: Home to the Reds for three, home to the Cardinals for three.

THE SKINNY: While the Red Sox and Yankees continue to seemingly match win for win these days, Tampa Bay is still hanging around in the American League East, and will enter Monday’s game vs. Cincinnati having won eight of the last 10 games.

They closed business on Sunday night just two games behind New York and Boston, and they’re doing it with names we’re not particularly used to. Matt Joyce has made everyone forget about Carl Crawford, as he’ll take quality numbers -- .308 average, 10 home runs, 36 RBIs -- into this week’s homestand.

And the powerful pitching -- a staple in the manager Joe Maddon Era -- is still there, and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. James Shields, with eight wins, a 2.29 ERA and 117 strikeouts through Sunday, leads a staff that has converged on a 3.56 ERA.

They don’t have the personnel the Yankees and Red Sox do, but keep in mind, Maddon has taken this team to the postseason twice already, and as long as they keep up this pace, they may just make it three.

                  COLD TEAM: Houston Astros

                  THIS SEASON: 28-51
                  LAST WEEK: 1-5
THIS WEEK: Home to the Rangers for three, home to the Red Sox for three.

THE SKINNY: Interleague was unkind to Houston last week, as the Astros ran into the Rangers and Rays, so keep that on your radar this week as they continue to play against the American League.

The Astros’ pitching staff just can’t hang against big bats and that was never more evident than this past weekend vs. Tampa Bay, when they allowed 26 runs in three games. The Astros are just 7-17 in June and there doesn’t seem to be any signs of that getting better.

The good news, perhaps, is that come July 4, they get back to playing the National League. But even that might not keep them from being one of the best fades as the dog days of summer approach.

                  OVER TEAM: Baltimore Orioles

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 38-34-3
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 5-1
THIS WEEK: Home to the Cardinals for three, at the Braves for three.

THE SKINNY: Clearly, they are going nowhere in the AL East. They simply do not have the pitching to hang with the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox through the summer.

But they have shown some offense of late, and you might want to pop them up on your over radar moving forward. They scored 17 runs in three games last weekend vs. Cincinnati, cashing three overs, and have scored four or more runs in six of the last seven games headed into Tuesday’s tilt vs. St. Louis.

Adam Jones is developing into the marquee player the Orioles have long hoped for, as he takes quality numbers into this week’s action: .291 average, 13 home runs, and 45 RBIs. He should end up with several career highs before it’s all said and done, and veteran first baseman Derrek Lee is finally shaking a dreadful start, as well. In his last 10 games, he has 10 doubles, five homers and 19 RBIs.

The bats are there, no question, and as long as the Orioles’ team ERA continues to hover around its current 4.32 clip, you’re going to hit more overs than unders with this club for a while.

                  UNDER TEAM: San Francisco Giants

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 28-45-5
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 1-4-1
THIS WEEK: At the Cubs for four, at the Tigers for three.

THE SKINNY: We’ll go back to an old reliable here, as let’s face it: If you’re an under player, the Giants have to be one of your staples. Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Indians was San Francisco’s fourth under in the last five games, and the one non-under in that run was a push.

The Giants are flashing the arms they showed last October, when they won the World Series, and clearly some unsuspecting American League teams, not used to San Francisco’s power and precision on the mound, have fallen by the wayside.

In six games last week vs. Minnesota and Cleveland, the Giants allowed three runs or less five times. More of that may be in store later this week, when they play a three-game set in Detroit.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Minnesota Twins (-110, 8)

Monday was a bad day for the Los Angeles Dodgers franchise – much like most days have been for the club’s supporters this season.

The Dodgers filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, claiming that the move would stabilize the club’s finances down the road.

If only it were that easy for Dodgers bettors.

Los Angeles supporters are down 11.43 units on the year, putting them 26th in the league. Most of that damage has come with the team playing on the road, but it’s also worth noting that L.A. has won only six of its last 22 interleague games.

With the struggling Ted Lilly facing the Minnesota Twins, we’re expecting more misery for the boys in blue Tuesday.

                    Pick: Twins

San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs (+125, N/A)

The Cubs showed some rare pop in Monday’s win over the Colorado, with Carlos Pena and Aramis Ramirez each swatting a pair of homers.

The win marked just the third time in nine games that the Cubs managed more than three runs and Doug Davis has to be hoping the club’s offense saved a few runs in the tank.

Davis has just one win on the year but has held his opposition to three or fewer runs in five of his last six outings. However, he's only getting 2.4 runs of support in his starts.

"We played hard and gave ourselves a chance to win," Davis told reporters after losing a 4-3 decision to the White Sox last week. "We were one swing away pretty much the whole game, one play away. It's bound to go the other way one of these times. (We're) keeping the games close, and that's all you can really do."

We see the Giants jumping out quick in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.

                    Pick: Giants
