Sunday's betting tips: MLB dogs barking loudly

    Weather to watch

Washington Nationals at Chicago White Sox – Winds will be blowing in at U.S. Cellular Field at 14 miles per hour, and there’s a 30 percent chance of showers. Temperatures will be in the low 70s.

    Who’s hot

MLB: The Over is 6-0 in Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie’s last six home starts.

MLB: The Mets are 7-0 in Dillon Gee’s last seven road starts.

WNBA: Tulsa is 4-0 ATS in its last four games following an ATS loss.

    Who’s not

MLB: The Cubs are 3-8 in Randy Wells last 11 road starts.

MLB: The Under is 0-8 in Astros pitcher J.A. Happ’s last eight start on five days’ rest.

WNBA: The Liberty is 0-4 ATS in its last four home games.

    Key stat

70 percent – MLB underdogs went 63-27, winning at a 70 percent clip, in the seven days leading up to Saturday's action. Road dogs were even more impressive at 45-17, or 72.6 percent.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Indians right fielder Shin-Soo Choo had his left thumb broken by a pitch Friday night and is expected to miss at least six weeks. "It's huge," manager Manny Acta said. "He means so much to us, not only offensively, but defensively and running the bases. He's a very important part of our lineup." Choo was hitting .244 with five homers, 28 RBIs and 11 steals. Outfielder Travis Buck was recalled from Triple-A Columbus.

    Game of the day

Cleveland Indians at San Francisco Giants

    Notable quotable

"It will be a very difficult match. It will be a fantastic test and I have to be playing my best if I want to have chances, and that's what I'm going to try." -- defending Wimbledon champ Rafael Nadal, on his upcoming fourth-round match with 2009 U.S. Open winner Juan Martin del Potro.

    Notes and tips

Umpire D.J. Reyburn will be behind the plate Sunday when Toronto visits St. Louis. The Under is 7-2 in Reyburn’s last nine games calling balls and strikes, and 10-1 in his last 11 Sunday games behind the plate.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger played with a broken foot at the end of last season, including the playoffs and Super Bowl, and still might need surgery. However, he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the lockout has given the foot much-needed rest and “it’s really come a long way. I haven’t had too many problems with it recently.” Big Ben said he opted against surgery immediately following the season because doctors told him “it would have been a really nasty process because of where the break was.”

Davey Johnson, 68, who’ll take over as Washington Nationals manager Monday, hasn’t managed in the big leagues since 2000 with the Dodgers. He guided the Mets to the 1986 World Series crown. Reports say he’s agreed to a contract through 2012, with a club option for 2013. Jim Riggleman surprisingly resigned Thursday night – when his team had won 11 of 12 – because he was unhappy that management hadn’t picked up his contract option for next year.

      Sunday's six-pack

-- Giants beat Cleveland 1-0, scoring their only run in 7th inning on balk called by (who else?), Balkin' Bob Davidson.

-- Crowds of 38,744 in Kansas City, 39,483 in Pittsburgh show value of interleague play. How many times Royals draw that much at home?

-- Red Sox lost last four games against Padres/Pirates. Don't look now, but Tampa Bay has hung in the playoff race as the halfway mark nears.

-- Evan Longoria started hitting better this week when he stopped using batting gloves. Whatever works.

-- A's have allowed most unearned runs in MLB this season, but their defense Saturday was better, partially because they used four guys in the infield who are all second basemen.

-- Amateur Patrick Cantlay shot +2 72 Saturday after shooting a 60 on Friday; he's five shots out of the lead at the Hartford Open, trying to be the first amateur in 21 years to win on the PGA Tour.

Sunday's List of 13: Looking back at 2005's best prospects........

Notes from the 2005 Baseball America Prospects Handbook

      13) This book had four guys list their top 50 prospects; three of the four named Joe Mauer #1, the other guy had Felix Hernandez #1 and Mauer #2. Delmon Young was listed at either #2 or #3 by all four guys (ouch).

      12) Couple of wealthy first basemen were underrated by the experts; Ryan Howard’s rankings were 26-16-38-22. Prince Fielder’s were 20-17-9-14. Fielder’s dad being a good major league hitter helped his rating.

      11) Los Angeles Angels were judged to have the best minor league prospects; Casey Kotchman was their #1 prospect; he’s finally realizing that potential now. Angels’ top nine prospects that year are all in the big leagues expects for Dallas McPherson, whose spent decent amount of time there but is now in AAA.

      10) Cardinals were rated with the worst prospects; other than Adam Wainwright, Skip Schumaker and Brendan Ryan, their top 30 prospects in ’05 are mostly nowhere to be found now.

      9) Six years ago, current Toronto slugger Jose Bautista was the Pirates #12 prospect, just ahead of Freddy Sanchez; the Bucs actually lost Batista twice—first, in the ’03 Rule 5 Draft to the Orioles, then in an ill-advised trade with the Blue Jays for the immortal Robinzon Diaz (139 big league AB’s). Do we wonder why the Pirates have been awful every year? No. Pittsburgh is an improved team this season.

      8) Andre Ethier was listed as the A’s #16 prospect; he has turned out be way, way better than that. Oakland’s #20 prospect in ’05 was an outfielder named Alexi Ogando, the same Alexi Ogando who is 7-2, 2.66 in 14 starts as a pitcher for division rival Texas this season. Lot can happen in six years.

      7) Pitcher Adam Loewen was the Orioles #1 pitching prospect back then, the highest-drafted Canadian ever; six years later, after going 8-8, 5.39 in 29 career big league starts, he’s an outfielder for the AAA Las Vegas 51’s, trying to get back to the big leagues as an outfielder with the Blue Jays.

      6) Wonder why the Mets are struggling? You look at their top 30 prospects six years ago, guys who should be contributing to a big market team now, and all you see are Philip Humber (having first solid year in bigs this year), Jeff Keppinger, Carlos Gomez and Angel Pagan. Of those four, only Pagan is still a Met.

      5) Adrian Gonzalez is really rich now; six years ago, he was #8 prospect of the Rangers, who had acquired him from Florida for the immortal Ugueth Urbina. Sadly for Texas, they dealt him to San Diego in a trade that netted the Rangers Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka. Ouch. Padre fans better hope the haul they got for Gonzalez (Patterson-Fuentes-Kelly-Rizzo) is a hell of a lot better than what the other teams got. It is remarkable that Gonzalez has been traded three times.

      4) Lucky for the Bronx Bombers they can buy anyone they want, since their top 30 prospects look like a listing from the Witness Protection Program (except for Robinson Cano, and to lesser extent, Phil Hughes/Melky Cabrera).

      3) Then there are the Braves, who were ranked in top 7 in prospects in 2005 for fifth year in row; Jeff Francoeur was the biggest prospects, but they also had Brian McCann/Kelly Johnson/Jarrod Saltalamacchia/Charlie Morton and Martin Prado.

      2) Here are the RedSox’ top six prospects in 2005; tell me why they’re strong now (besides having thick wallets): Hanley Ramirez (traded for Beckett/Lowell), Brandon Moss (bust), Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester, Anibal Sanchez (was also dealt to Florida in Beckett trade) and Dustin Pedroia, who was a SS back then.

      1) I still think its funny that the White Sox traded Gio Gonzalez not once, but twice; the first time he got traded to the Phillies with Aaron Rowand for Jim Thome. Philly then traded him back to the Pale Hose with Gavin Floyd for Freddy Garcia, before the Sox dealt Gonzalez again, this time with Ryan Sweeney for Nick Swisher, who was dismal in his only season on the South Side. Gonzalez is a really good pitcher now. Hard to believe he got traded three times.

Lady luck: Sunday's best WNBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Silver Stars at Atlanta Dream (-3, 164)

After years of running in the middle of the pack, the Silver Stars are making a break for the top spot in the Western Conference.

San Antonio rose to the top in the West with a 90-80 overtime win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday, covering as a 2.5-point home favorite. The Silver Stars improved to 5-1 straight up and against the spread.

“I think it starts and ends on the defensive side of things,” center Ruth Riley told the San Antonio Express. “Our ability to get stops is what keeps us in games. Unfortunately, we find ourselves with a big deficit a couple of times, but luckily, our defense has bailed us out.”

San Antonio limited the Sparks to just two points in the extra frame and is allowing 82.2 points per game this season. The Silver Stars forced 17 turnovers and grabbed seven steals in the win over L.A., turning those into easy buckets.

“We had to work for that one, no doubt,” guard Becky Hammon told the media. “They put a lot of pressure on us. We had to do a lot of things right down the stretch.”

San Antonio already owns a win over Atlanta this season, defeating the Dream 86-74 as a 2.5-point home dog. The Silver Stars forced 18 turnovers and tallied eight steals in that victory.

        Pick: San Antonio +3

Tulsa Shock at Washington Mystics (-8.5, 156)

If there’s one team playing as bad as the Shock these days, it’s the Mystics.

Since winning its second game of the season, Washington has dropped four straight contest to fall to 1-5 and lugs an identical ATS mark along with it. One of those losses has come at the hands of Tulsa, which took a 77-59 victory as a 4-point home favorite on June 18 – the Shock’s lone win on the year.

"I thought that for 40 minutes we brought the energy," WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes told the media following that game. "I think that every player on this team refused to lose."

The Shock have gone on to lose both games since that victory, posting a 1-1 ATS mark vs. Seattle and New York. They’ve managed to salvage a 5-3 record against the spread to start the year and should be getting more respect than the 8.5 points oddsmakers are handing them Sunday afternoon.

        Pick: Tulsa +8.5

            Write-Up

            Sunday, June 26

Remember as interleague play starts, there are DHs used in games in the American League ballparks; pitchers bat in National League parks. Florida Marlins are home team for series with Seattle this week, even though series is at Safeco Field. Marlins will bat last, there isn't a DH in series. Marlins' ballpark isn't available this weekend.

AL teams are 78-74 vs NL teams so far in interleague play, but 24-36 the last five nights.
Over is 30-32-4 with a DH, 38-44-5 without one, 68-76-9 overall.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Phillip Humber, Chicago White Sox (7-3, 2.90 ERA)

The ChiSox are getting a lift from the right hander. Humber is 4-0 in his last four starts and hasn’t tasted defeat since April 30, going 5-0 in that eight-start span. He’s allowed more than three runs just once in that span and hasn’t given up more than four runs in any of his 13 starts in 2011.

Carl Pavano, Minnesota Twins (5-5, 4.05 ERA)

Pavano is proving there’s still life in that arm of his, even without the power of the majors’ best mustache. The clean-shaven righty is 3-0 with a 1.63 ERA over his last four starts and has only one loss in his previous eight appearances. The veteran hurler is also going deep into starts, pitching into at least the seventh inning in seven straight outings.

                Slumping

                J.A. Happ, Houston Astros (3-9, 5.33 ERA)

The Astros' southpaw has watched his ERA swell over his last three starts. Happ is 0-2 with a bulky 9.00 ERA in those outings, including giving up five runs on eight hits over just 2 2-3 innings of work against the Rangers on Monday. Happ has pitched past the sixth inning in just one of his last 10 outings.

Fausto Carmona, Cleveland Indians (4-9, 5.98 ERA)

Carmona has just one win in his last nine starts and is coming off a rough outing against the Rockies on Monday. The right hander lasted only 4 2-3 innings before he was yanked, allowing seven runs on nine hits. He’s given up at least four runs in eight straight starts, which is bad news for the Tribe, who are averaging just over three runs per game in June.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Indians at Giants
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at San Francisco Giants (-133)

Another weekend of interleague play winds down when the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants host the Cleveland Indians under ESPN’s Sunday night spotlight. The Giants, looking for a sweep, are set as favorites of -133.

                  NO FIRST BASE VIRTUOSO

The Indians have been trying to make things less rigorous for catcher Carlos Santana by putting him at first base on occasion this season. And he’s been out there more often lately, with Matt LaPorta’s sprained ankle putting him on the disabled list a week ago.

But Santana is definitely a work in progress when he’s not behind the plate. In the opener of this three-game series Friday night, Santana had two sixth-inning errors, helping spark a three-run rally by the Giants, who went on to win 4-3.

On the flip side, Santana was the main reason Cleveland was in the game Friday, as he had a pair of hits and two RBIs. In fact, he’s been heating up at the plate, batting .324 with three home runs and seven RBIs over 10 games through Friday.

But it was hard for Indians manager Manny Acta to get past Santana’s effort at first base Friday, with all three of San Fran’s sixth-inning runs being unearned.

“Carlos had a rough day at first base,” Acta told Yahoo Sports.

Cleveland made two more errors, though none by Santana, in Saturday's 1-0 loss.

                  MAKING DO WITHOUT CHOO

As if losing LaPorta wasn’t enough, Acta now has to find a fill-in for outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.

Choo suffered a broken left thumb, getting hit by a pitch from Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez in the fourth inning Friday night. Choo will join LaPorta on the DL and is expected to miss at least six weeks.

“He means so much for us offensively, defensively, running the bases," Acta said. "He’s an important part of our lineup. It’s a big blow.”

                  BUMMER FOR BUMGARNER

San Francisco starter Madison Bumgarner has had only one really bad outing all season – his last one – and still has a serviceable ERA of 4.06. But he’s not getting run support and is just 3-9.

The Giants lost Bumgarner’s first six starts of the year and, to be fair, he was a little shaky in a few of those games. And against Minnesota Tuesday, he got absolutely hammered at home by the Twins, making it just 1/3 of an inning while giving up eight runs on nine hits in a 9-2 loss.

But in the nine starts prior to that, he went at least six innings every time, including seven innings four times and 8 2-3 innings once, and allowed no more than three earned runs per outing. Yet the Giants went 4-5 and Bumgarner went 2-5 with a pair of no-decisions.

                  PLUMMETING PITCHER

Cleveland sends Fausto Carmona (4-9, 5.98 ERA) to the mound and that hasn’t boded well. The right hander is 1-6 in his last seven starts, allowing a whopping 42 runs in that stretch, including 38 earned.

Against Colorado at home Monday, Carmona got tagged for seven runs (all earned) on nine hits and a walk in 4 2-3 innings. During the slide, he has allowed six earned runs or more four times.

                  NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

Despite losing the first two by the Bay, the Indians are 8-4 in their last 12 interleague games and 7-2 in interleague play against winning teams. Beyond that, though, the Tribe is on a host of negative streaks, including 2-6 on the highway, 6-24 in interleague roadies, 1-4 in Carmona’s last five road outings and 2-5 in his last seven interleague starts.

The Giants have fallen in Bumgarner’s last four starts at AT&T Park, but they are on upswings of 5-1 at home, 21-7 in interleague home games and 6-1 in interleague play against winning teams.

As far as totals, playing San Francisco on the under has been a wise move. The Giants are on under streaks of 37-16-3 overall, 20-6-1 at home, 28-11-1 at home against righty starters, 10-2-2 in interleague action, 23-11 with Bumgarner taking the ball and 12-5 behind Bumgarner at home.

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at Florida Marlins (140, 6.5)

Batters are hitting .230 against Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez, who has allowed three runs over his last two starts covering 14 innings. Sanchez (6-1, 2.90 ERA) struck out 14 and walked four in those outings.

Mariners starter Doug Fister is coming off a sterling eight-inning outing against the Nationals in which he gave up three hits and one run.

These pitchers have combined for a 10-17 over/under mark this season. The Under is 6-1 in umpire Lazaro Diaz’s last seven interleague games behind the plate, and 19-6-1 in his last 27 overall games calling balls and strikes.

Seattle and Florida trot out two of MLB's weakest lineups. They're among a handful of teams yet to score 300 runs.

                    Pick: Under

Colorado Rockies at New York Yankees (-160, 9)

In the rubber game of this interleague series, the Rockies hand the ball to rookie Juan Nicasio.

He’s been terrible in two road starts, giving up 16 hits and nine earned runs in 10 2/3 innings. Nicasio has been much better in three home starts, but this game will be played at Yankee Stadium.

New York starter Ivan Nova has been brilliant lately. He’s 3-0 with a 3.05 ERA in his last three starts, with 15 hits allowed in 20 2/3 innings.

Both teams have won seven of 10 after Saturday's 8-3 Yankees win.

Some books opened the Yankees at -135 or -140 and bettors jumped on it, pushing up the price. Still, it's worth a play as this matchup favors the home team in a big way.

                    Pick: Yankees

Canadian bacon: CFL season preview and predictions

                        EAST DIVISION

Montreal Alouettes (2010 Record: 12-6, Projected Record for 2011: 12-6)

                        Odds to win East: -155

Only a serious injury to star quarterback Anthony Calvillo could deprive the Alouettes of another Eastern division title or a fourth consecutive visit to the Grey Cup. Running back Avon Cobourne, SB Ben Cahoon and K Damon Duval have all left the nest but the Alouettes have already found adequate replacements. Brandon Whitaker, Yvenson Bernard and Emmanuel Marc will share duties on the ground while S.J. Green will take Cahoon’s place in an improved group of receivers, with the acquisitions of Brendan London and Dallas Baker. Sean Whyte and Sandro DeAngelis will both start the season and should make Damon Duval’s departure far less dramatic. Defensively, Dwight Anderson was a key addition that will reinforce the secondary.

                        Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2010 Record: 9-9, Projected Record for 2011: 11-7)

                        Odds to win East: +259

The Tiger-Cats should be in the thick of the race for first place in the East as long as their starting QB Kevin Glenn stays healthy. The addition of RB Avon Cobourne, who at both running the ball and protecting the pivot, should give more power to a very potent offence, well served by receivers of the likes of Arland Bruce III, Dave Stala, Marquay McDaniel, Maurice Mann, Bakari Grand and Chris Williams. The Tiger Cats defense is one of the most solid in the CFL with a star DE in Stevie Baggs and an outstanding LB in Markeith Knowlton. The Tiger Cats also have one of the most reliable kickers in Justin Medlock. Unfortunately, the lack of offensive creativity from their coaching staff might hinder their chances in close games.

Toronto Argonauts (2010 Record: 9-9, Projected Record for 2011: 8-10)

                        Odds to win East: +800

The Argonauts have greatly improved under Jim Barker and they should still be competitive in 2011. They have a good defense with star players like DT Kevin Huntley, S Willie Pile and LB Kevin Eiben. Corey Boyd and Chad Owens give some firepower to both their offense and special teams. The biggest weakness for the Argos is under centre. Cleo Lemon, despite what some colleagues may think, simply doesn’t have what it takes to become a dominant QB in the pros.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2010 Record: 4-14, Projected Record for 2011: 6-12)

                        Odds to win East: +1,027

The Blue Bombers have an excellent QB in Buck Pierce. The problem is that he inevitably gets injured. The Bombers’ season will depend on his health. The longer he lasts, the better for Winnipeg fans and that could mean a run for third place and a playoff spot. But Pierce is fragile and we doubt strongly he will remain healthy all season. Joey Elliott is not a bad substitute but we don’t think he’s ready to take over, and neither is Alex Brink. The Bombers’ attack will nonetheless do some damages to opposing teams because of the great talent of Terrence Edwards and Fred Reid. The defense is also well served with T Doug Brown, DE Odell Willis, S Ian Logan and CB Jovon Johnson.

                        WEST DIVISION

                        B.C. Lions (2010 Record: 8-10, Projected Record for 2011: 12-6)

                        Odds to win West: +400

The Lions should pick up where they left off. After a catastrophic start in 2010, they came back stronger in the second half of the calendar. Wally Buono remains one of the finest head coach in the CFL and he can count on a team that has depth on both sides of the ball. Travis Lulay seems to have gained confidence and maturity and he will again have a nice arsenal with an excellent group of receivers, led by Geroy Simon and Paris Jackson. Solomon Elimimian is one of the best linebackers there is and the secondary is led by DE Korey Banks and CB Davis Sanchez.

Calgary Stampeders (2010 Record: 13-5, Projected Record for 2011: 11-7)

                        Odds to win West: +150

Once again, the Calgary Stampeders will be an intimidating squad. Like the Alouettes, the Stampeders have an excellent head coach in John Hufnagel and one of the best QB’s in the CFL in Henry Burris. Add to the mix, a talented group of receivers of the likes of Ken-Yon Rambo, Nik Lewis, Romby Bryant or Jabari Arthur. The Stampeders can also inflict casualties when Joffrey Reynolds carries the ball. Calgary will put lots of points on the board, unfortunately, its defense will likely concede just as many. That could cost them first place in the West.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (2010 Record: 10-8, Projected Record for 2011: 8-10)

                        Odds to win West: +250

Darian Durant is a very talented QB, but to step to the next level he must stop throwing so many interceptions. The problem is that, except for Weston Dressler, Jason Clermont and maybe Chris Getzlaf, he doesn’t have enough deep-threat receivers. Wes Cates gives him some options on the ground or for short pass plays. The Riders defense will once again be stingy with S James Patrick and veteran LB Barrin Simpson. But like Simpson, the Riders are aging and will have difficulty keeping pace in a division where the level of competition is always at the highest.

Edmonton Eskimos (2010 Record: 7-11, Projected Record for 2011: 5-13)

                        Odds to win West: +400

The poor Eskimos fans will once again find this season to be painfully long. Most teams have improved, but that’s not the case for the Eskimos. Despite all of his abilities, Rick Ray still doesn’t seem to have an offensive line capable of protecting him. And besides Fred Stamps, he doesn’t have the greatest receivers to work with. The Eskimos also have many holes on defense and few reliable players outside of DT Jermaine Reid or DB Chris Thompson. The Eskimos will win more games because of their tenacity and resiliency than because of their talent, and that will prove far from being enough for them to be still playing football in November.
