Diamondbacks Close Set At Kansas City Royals
Kirk Gibson’s surprising Arizona Diamondbacks continue their grind towards a possible postseason berth with Thursday’s series finale at the Kansas City Royals. First pitch at Kauffman Stadium is 5:10 p.m. (PT) with FOX Sports affiliates providing television coverage to the two local markets.
Game 3 pits a pair of right-handers on the mound with Daniel Hudson (9-6, 3.56) going for the D-Backs opposite KC’s Felipe Paulino (3-1, 2.33).
Arizona took Tuesday's series opener by a 7-2 count behind seven good innings from Joe Saunders. The Snakes closed as a +115 underdog, the 9-run total ‘pushed’ and the victory marked the third straight for the Diamondbacks at Kauffman.
Wednesday’s middle game of the set was still pending with Arizona on a -120 baseball betting line behind Ian Kennedy. The Royals were sending left-hander Jeff Francis to the mound with eight runs for the total.
Hudson enters this matchup off successive wins while Arizona has posted triumphs in nine of his 11 starts since he began the season by dropping his first four starts. The former 5th-round pick by the White Sox has won both of his previous interleague starts that include a dominating performance against his former club in his last outing.
The righty went the distance with a 3-hitter in a 4-1 win as 130 home chalk vs. Chicago, striking out five with a season-high 119 pitches.
Hudson has a start and a relief appearance vs. Kansas City from his short tenure with the ChiSox. The start came last July with Hudson working just four innings and allowing five runs. Chicago’s offense took him off the hook for the defeat by scoring 15 times for a 15-5 win.
Paulino started the year in Colorado’s bullpen and produced a 7.36 ERA with an 0-4 record in 18 appearances before being sold off to the Royals. He made one relief showing for KC before moving into the rotation slot that had belonged to rookie Nate Adcock.
Control issues got Paulino in trouble his last assignment at St. Louis last Friday. Staked to an early three-zip lead, he walked four and hit two more Cardinals during his 6-inning, 4-ER performance. The Royals eventually scratched out a 5-4 win to cash +150 tickets.
While with the Rockies earlier this season, Paulino saw the Diamondbacks twice as a reliever, working two innings and allowing a run. The lone run was a solo shot by Justin Upton that lifted Arizona to a win. Paulino’s lifetime numbers against the Snakes include a 4.38 ERA and 0-2 record.
Just 12 career plate assignments under his belt, Cory Blaser is scheduled to be south of the dish for Thursday’s game. The 29-year-old umpire has a slight 6-4 ‘under’ lean this season with home underdogs 1-2.
Thursday's KC forecast calls for clear skies with no chance of rain and a game-time temp in the mid-to-upper 70s. Some of the recent wind should die off a little with weathermen calling for a WNW breeze in the 10-12 mph range (LF corner across to RF).
The Diamondbacks will move on from here to the Motor City for a weekend set with the Tigers while the Royals stay put to host the Cubs.
