Tuesday's betting tips: A-Rod kills injury rumors

    Who’s hot

MLB: The over is 9-4 in Toronto’s last 13 interleague games.

MLB: Philadelphia has won eight of its last 10.

WNBA: New York has covered in 10 of its last 13 meetings with Los Angeles.

    Who’s not

MLB: The Cubs are 2-9 in their last 11 road games.

MLB: Arizona is 1-11 in Joe Saunders’ last 12 road starts.

WNBA: Atlanta is 5-16 ATS in its last 21 road games.

    Key stat

10.96 – Interim Florida Marlins manager Jack McKeon has his work cut out for him with this club, but one of his first tasks ought to be helping the team defend its home field. The Marlins are 15-22 at home, costing Fish bettors 10.96 units to date.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals: The injury that St. Louis’ slugger suffered on Sunday is worse than originally thought as he’ll be out about six weeks with a broken bone in his left wrist. "He does have a fracture in his left wrist," general manger John Mozeliak told reporters on Monday afternoon. "In the terms of whether it's mild or extreme, it is mild in that regard. But it's still going to require probably six weeks of very little baseball activity. On a hopeful note, we hope to have him back by, say, beginning of August." Pujols is hitting .279 with 17 homers and 45 RBIs.

    Game of the day

Tampa Bay Rays at Milwaukee Brewers (-130, 8)

    Notable quotable

"It's like almost too perfect, you know. There's no wind, obviously no sun, no sort of elements to contend with. It's different, different grass court tennis." – Andy Murray said about defeating Daniel Gimeno-Traver under the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon. The first day of the tournament was sidetracked by rotten weather that resulted in 29 matches being cancelled or suspended.

    Notes and tips

If you heard the rumors of A-Rod playing through a serious shoulder injury lately, forget it – at least that’s what the New York Yankees’ third baseman says. "That's the first I have heard of it. I don't know where that came from. It's nothing out of the ordinary, normal bumps and bruises," Rodriguez told reporters about the injury rumors. Rodriguez had three hits against the Cubs on Sunday and also scored three runs in the 10-4 win.

The Atlanta Dream are still without Sancho Lyttle, who is currently playing for Spain in the 2011 Eurobasket and so far, they haven’t been able to come close to replacing her. The All-Star forward was averaging 12.5 points and 7.8 rebounds in four games since leaving the team. She will miss the next two games, leaving Courtney Paris to fill in. Atlanta is just 1-5 against the spread heading into Tuesday’s home game with Chicago as a 4.5-point favorite.

      Tuesday's six-pack

According to Phil Steele's college football magazine, the six teams that are playing the hardest schedules this season........
      6) Boston College-- Lost last three bowls, scoring 14-13-13 points.

      5) LSU-- 13-23-1 vs spread as home favorite under Les Miles.

      4) Oregon State-- 13-5 vs spread as road underdog last five years.

      3) Baylor-- Have underrated QB in mobile Robert Griffin III.

      2) Iowa State-- Went bowling once in last five years.

      1) Colorado-- New league, new coach; senior QB provides hope.

      ************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) NHL's salary cap could go up as much as $5M next season; at some point, don’t hockey fans have to have to reluctantly admit that commish Gary Bettman is presiding over an era of resurgence for the NHL?

      12) 11 weeks of fantasy baseball under the bridge, and I still haven’t my whole team on the field yet, that’s how many baseball players get hurt. Meanwhile, Milan Lucic played with a broken toe throughout the last two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Hockey players are tough. They train properly. I'm really thinking that baseball players overtrain, and get hurt more as a result.

      11) Would you want 36-year old Tiki Barber playing on your football team? Nah, me either.

      10) Pretty fun week for the Brewers last week; four games at Wrigley, three at Fenway. Lot of history there.

      9) Chad Pennington is going to call games on FOX this season, then try to play again in 2012. Pennington is this era’s Pat Haden; smart but no arm. Hope he’s a better TV analyst than Haden. He's just about the same as a quarterback- won't screw things up, won't win big games for you.

      8) There is a high school in San Diego; think it is Hoover High, where they have 2,200 kids with 35 different languages spoken. Could you imagine teaching in a school like that? Has to be really tough.

      7) Read in one of the New York papers today that when he was in college, Clarence Clemons, the great saxophone player who passed away this weekend, was a blocking back for Emerson Boozer, who later starred for the Joe Namath-era Jets.

      6) Godson update: young man wound up allowing one earned run in 19.1 IP in his first season of college baseball, at the Division II level; batters were 5-61 against his lefthanded offerings. Not a bad league he plays in; eight kids got drafted in major league draft earlier this month.

      5) Greedy bastard update: Gas is down to $3.92 at the hideous Mobil station by my house; a few miles north, its down to $3.85 a gallon.

      4) In the least surprising news of the day, the season finale of Mob Wives next week has a brawl in it, with one of the women unhappy about a book one of the others is writing. One of the most bizarre shows in TV history concludes its first season-- if you like seeing women curse like sailors, this is the show for you. Sunday nights on VH1.

      3) I'm guessing the Reds charged premium prices for a series with Bronx Bombers in town this week; do they offer rebates when Jeter is on the DL and doesn't play? Will the teams hosting the Cardinals offer rebates with Albert Pujols on the DL for a month? Hell no.

      2) Marlins had a team meeting with new manager Jack McKeon Monday; Hanley Ramirez was late, so Hanley Ramirez didn't start, as 80-year old McKeon made his first statement loud and clear. Ramirez did pinch-hit in 9th inning, but was called out on strikes, ending a bad day for him.

      1) Tim Hudson had a night to remember Monday, blanking Toronto for eight innings and hitting a two-run homer in Atlanta's 2-0 win against the Blue Jays. Toronto only had three baserunners against Hudson, who at age 37, looked as sharp as ever after having couple of rough starts.

Lady luck: Tuesday's best WNBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Mercury at San Antonio Silver Stars (-3.5, 182.5)

Everything finally looked like it was coming together for the Mercury’s home opener against the Silver Stars last week. Phoenix jumped out to a 16-point lead early, but then halftime hit.

After that it was all Silver Stars as San Antonio stormed back for a 101-99 victory, helping the club’s supporters cash in as 7-point underdogs while the club improved to 5-0 straight up and against the spread.

Sophia Young scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half and Becky Hammon added 22 points and nine rebounds. San Antonio took full advantage of 14 Phoenix fouls in the third quarter.

The Mercury blew a 16-point first-half lead in their home opener Friday, a 101-99 loss to the San Antonio Silver Stars. The 14 fouls called in the third quarter also didn't help the running Mercury.

"You can't blame it on that," Mercury coach Corey Gaines said after Friday's game. "You still got to get stops. You got to move your feet more. You can't give fouls.

"We have to move our feet better and not play with our hands so much. You do that, and you won't get those fouls. First half, we had stops and (were able to run on offense). Second half, (we didn't)."

Can’t see the Mercury getting it done Tuesday.

        Pick: Silver Stars

Chicago Sky at Atlanta Dream (-4.5, 159.5)

The Atlanta Dream get another shot at their first home win of the season Tuesday, but it’s not like they’ve given their home crowd much to cheer about.

The Dream is 5-16 against the spread in their last 21 home games and were absolutely terrible in Sunday’s 77-64 loss to the visiting Minnesota Lynx. Atlanta shot just 30 percent from the floor and were outrebounded 51-38.

"We've got to bounce back in a hurry," coach Marynell Meadors told reporters. "We've got to get some things worked out and put this game behind us."

That might be tough against Chicago’s solid defense and with Sancho Lyttle still away playing with the Spain's national team.

        Pick: Sky

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                STREAKING

Jhoulys Chacin (8-4, 2.81 ERA), Colorado Rockies

Are we looking at Colorado’s new staff ace? Chacin was already enjoying superb sophomore season before he started pitching out of his mind. The 23-year-old Venezuelan is 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) in the month of June.

"He's still a little bit new on the scene,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy told the Associated Press of his young hurler. “But I think those who have walked up there and faced him are well aware of his capability."

Dillon Gee (7-0, 2.86 ERA), New York Mets

The only thing that can stop this Mets super rookie is a rain delay. Gee was denied a chance to pick up his sixth straight win because of an interruption from Mother Nature.

Gee shutout the Braves for the four innings he was on the bump and lowered his ERA to 2.86 in the process.

"He was really good for four innings," Atlanta's Chipper Jones told reporters after the game. "I don't know who helped this guy with his transformation but he's really, really tough right now.”

The Mets are 8-0 (+7.74 units) in the kid’s last eight trips to the hill and Gee carries a 0.47 ERA over his last three appearances.

Carl Pavano (4-5, 4.20 ERA), Minnesota Twins

Never doubt the power of the mustache. Carl Pavano looked washed up for the first couple months of the season but the big righty is enjoying a nice three-start streak.

He’s 2-0 with a 1.44 ERA in June and he’s pitched at least seven innings in each of his last six appearances. The under is also 3-0 in his last three trips to the bump.

                SLUMPING

Chad Billingsley (5-6, 4.65 ERA), Los Angeles Dodgers

Not much is going right for the Dodgers and Chad Billingsley isn’t excluded from the club’s recent woes. The veteran right-hander allowed seven and six runs in his last two starts, which swelled up his already bloated WHIP to 1.52.

At least he’s making total bettors happy. The over is 5-0 in his last five starts.

MLB money arms: Best and worst pitching bets this week
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to another edition of ‘Money Arms’, a bi-weekly look around the majors at starting pitchers that are hot, and those that are not.

I’ll try to avoid isolating perennial Cy Young candidates such as Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay. Those pricey pitchers rarely boast value when you’re backing them, and let’s face it, fading them is rarely a good idea.

                  Here’s a look at this week’s list.

                  Money makers

                  Michael Pineda, Seattle Mariners

The Mariners couldn’t be happier with Pineda’s performance in his rookie season.

He’s 7-4 with a 2.64 ERA and 1.03 WHIP through 14 starts, and has been downright nasty along the way, holding opposing hitters to a .202 batting average.

There’s a concern that Pineda might wear down as the season progresses, as he’s already logged 88 2/3 innings and we haven’t even flipped the calendar page to July yet. That’s a story for another day, however, as he still has plenty of life in that right arm.

This story isn’t just about Pineda. The entire Mariners team is playing its best baseball right now, coming off a series win against the Phillies, pulling within a half-game of the Rangers for first place in the A.L. West.

Neither the oddsmakers nor the betting public are ready to trust the Mariners just yet. That’s just fine with us, as we can pick up substantial value backing Seattle with Pineda on the hill in the coming weeks.

                  Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals

The Nationals are hot right now, with third-year starter Jordan Zimmermann leading the way.

The right-hander has led the Nats’ to victory in each of his last four starts, allowing a grand total of four earned runs in 27 1/3 innings of work over that stretch.

This is Zimmermann’s first full season at the big league level, at least the Nationals are hoping he’ll last the entire way. His first two seasons were cut short due to injury, as he made just 23 starts in 2009 and 2010 combined.

He’s already taken the ball 14 times here in 2011.

Much like the Mariners, the Nationals have climbed back to respectability this season, and I still feel they have plenty of room to run. With an improving lineup, which just welcomed back slugger Ryan Zimmerman, they’re worth a wager these days.

                  Bankroll burners

                  Derek Holland, Texas Rangers

I’ve been a supporter of Holland in the past, but I don’t like what I’m seeing from the young left-hander right now.

The Rangers have won only two of his last seven starts, and while that’s had a lot to do with their inconsistent offense, it’s also been a result of Holland giving up at least four earned runs on four different occasions over that stretch.

The numbers are ugly. Holland has been tagged for eight home runs while issuing 13 walks in his last five outings, spanning 31 innings pitched.

The fact that he still owns an attractive 5-2 record is keeping Holland in favor with the betting majority. It doesn’t hurt that the Rangers have become a very public team over the last year.

Consider fading Holland in the favorite role in the next couple of weeks.

                  Ricky Nolasco, Florida Marlins

It’s not hard to make a case for fading the Marlins these days. When Ricky Nolasco is on the mound, it’s even easier.

Florida’s struggles have been well documented. The Fish are 1-19 in June, falling all the way to last place in the N.L. East, 12.5 games back of the division-leading Phillies.

Nolasco has been hit hard lately, allowing 46 hits and 24 earned runs over his last five starts, covering only 26 1/3 innings of work.

This is a guy that’s won 42 games over the last three seasons, so he’s bound to turn it around at some point, but he’s showing no signs of that at the moment.

Obviously the value side of the equation is starting to swing out of our favor when it comes to the Marlins right now. However, we should still be able to pick our spots and fade Nolasco as a favorite, at least in his home park.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The seven most valuable position players in baseball
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone who has ever wagered as much as a dollar on a baseball game knows that the odds are driven by the starting pitchers.

The only position player in today's game who seems to move the needle at all on the line is Albert Pujols. Even when the St. Louis Cardinals first baseman sits out a rare game, the odds usually change by just 15 or 20 cents.

Pujols is certainly one of the game's premier players and on his way to the Hall of Fame, but there are other current players who can make a difference if they are out of their team's lineup.

Using both Fangraphs' Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and Baseball Prospectus' WARP (Wins Above Replacement Player), we'll take a look at who the most valuable non-pitchers have been so far this season.

For those not familiar with WAR, it is an advanced statistic used to show how many more wins a player would give a team as opposed to a replacement-level player, defined as a bench player or Class AAA player at that position. WAR for position player is calculated by using both various hitting and fielding metrics.

Let's take at look at the top seven batters in terms of WAR and WARP so far this season. Surprisingly, Pujols isn't among them as he has just 2.2 WAR and 2.4 WARP.

Keep in mind that if the matchups and odds are favorable, it would be wise to wager against their teams whenever these players are out of the lineup, even if that occurs infrequently.

JOSE BAUTISTA, RF, TORONTO BLUE JAYS

                    WAR: 4.7
                    WARP: 5.2

The odds of picking Bautista to be the most valuable player in baseball three years ago would have been only slightly better than hitting the Powerball. He was in third season as the Pittsburgh Pirates' regular third baseman on his way to hitting .244 with 12 home runs in 107 games before being traded to the Blue Jays for minor-league catcher Robinzon Diaz on Aug. 21.

Bautista hit just 13 home runs for the Blue Jays in 2009. However, Dwayne Murphy became the Blue Jays' hitting coach prior to last season, made a minor adjustment to the timing of Bautista's swing and his pupil blasted 54 homers to lead the major leagues. Bautista is showing that 2010 wasn't a fluke as he is hitting .338 with leading the American League with 21 homers, 62 walks, a .486 on-base percentage and a .676 slugging percentage.

Bautista has missed eight games this season, three for the birth of a child and five with neck inflammation, and the Blue Jays have gone 4-4 in his absence.

MATT KEMP, CF, LOS ANGELES DODGERS

                    WAR: 3.8
                    WARP: 3.9

New Dodgers manager Don Mattingly predicted in spring training that this would be Kemp's breakout season following a disappointing 2010 in which he launched 28 home runs but hit just .249 with a .310 on-base percentage while feuding with coaches and seeming to be more interested in keeping up with Rihanna than playing baseball.

Mattingly has been right on the money as Kemp is hitting .335 in 70 games while leading the National League with 20 home runs and a .627 slugging percentage. Kemp has played in 277 consecutive games, good for the longest active streak in the major leagues. The Dodgers lost the only game Kemp hasn't started this season but he still hit a pinch-hit home run.

JOSE REYES, SS, NEW YORK METS

                    WAR: 4.1
                    WARP: 3.4

Mets owner Fred Wilpon has said that his cash-strapped club cannot afford to sign Reyes to a $100-million-plus contract when he becomes eligible for free agency at the end of the season. Thus, Reyes has become the human trade rumor with daily speculation in the New York media about his future.

Reyes hasn't let his unsettled status affect his play and has instead increased his market value by hitting an NL-leading .343 as the Mets' leadoff hitter while pacing the league in hits (102) and triples (12). He also has 26 stolen bases. Reyes has missed just three games this season in order to attend his grandmother's funeral in the Dominican Republic and the Mets lost twice.

ADRIAN GONZALEZ, 1B, BOSTON RED SOX

                    WAR: 3.9
                    WARP: 3.5

The Red Sox gave up three top prospects to acquire Gonzalez in an off-season trade from the San Diego Padres then signed him to a seven-year, $154-million contract extension in April. It's safe to say general manager Theo Epstein has no buyer's remorse as Gonzalez is leading the AL in hitting with a .347 average while also topping the circuit with 99 hits, 24 doubles and 62 RBIs.

Gonzalez has hit 15 home runs in 315 plate appearances but expect that figure to rise as he averaged 34 a season over the last four years while playing his home games at spacious Petco Park. It may be a while before he misses a game, though, as he has started all 70 this year and has sat out just11 since the start of the 2006 season.

                    ANDREW McCUTCHEN, CF, PITTSBURGH PIRATES

                    WAR: 3.8
                    WARP: 2.9

The Pirates are a surprising 35-35 this year following a 105-loss season last year that extended their streak of losing season to 18 in a row, a major North American professional sports record. McCutchen is a big reason why the Pirates are greatly improved. He’s batting .281 with 10 homers, 13 steals and a .383 on-base percentage while playing sparkling defense.

McCutchen has failed to start three games this season and the Pirates have won two. However, don't expect that trend to continue as McCutchen is the cornerstone player of a rebuilding situation that is starting to gain traction.

CURTIS GRANDERSON, CF, NEW YORK YANKEES

                    WAR: 3.5
                    WARP: 3.0

Granderson hit 14 home runs after Aug. 1 last year following long pre-game batting practice sessions with hitting coach Kevin Long. The strong finish portended what was to come this season. Granderson's 21 home runs tie Bautista for lead the AL and are nine short of his career high set two years ago when he was with the Detroit Tigers.

Granderson is also atop the league with 60 runs scored and is hitting .285 with 10 stolen bases. He has played in all 69 games, starting all but one.

                    JOEY VOTTO, 1B, CINCINNATI REDS

                    WAR: 3.3
                    WARP: 2.8

Votto is following up on last year's NL Most Valuable Player performance with another strong season for the otherwise disappointing Reds. While he has hit just nine home runs so far after going deep 37 times in 2011, he had drawn an NL-best 56 walks for a league-high .445 on-base percentage and is hitting .320.

The Reds won the only game he has missed this season but that's certainly a small sample size. He sat out 12 games last season.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Florida Marlins (+120, 8)

So the solution to the Florida Marlins’ problems is … Jack McKeon?

Sure, the guy had his moments with the team, but isn’t it time to let go of the past and move forward so Jack can chill out with his cigars in a retirement home somewhere?

It seems like a pretty crazy move considering all the issues the Marlins have already. They have just five wins in their last 26 games overall and their offense is producing just 3.83 runs per game.

One thing is for sure with McKeon behind the bench – the old guy isn’t going to take any guff. Just one game into his interim assignment, McKeon benched the struggling Hanley Ramirez, who’s still hurting with a strained back.

“He expects everyone here to play even harder now. He knows we have a lot of talent in here,” Ramirez told reporters. “We just have to show it out there on the field. He's going to get on everybody here. If you don't play hard, you're not going to be here."

We’ll believe it when we see it.

                      Pick: Angels

Seattle Mariners at Washington Nationals (-120, 8)

It’s time to start taking the Seattle Mariners seriously.

The club still has a lot of problems putting runs on the board, but they are coming off a great series against the Philadelphia Phillies and are now just a half game out of first place in the AL West.

“We’ve created an environment, and you’d have to be dead not to feel it,” shortstop Brendan Ryan said. “We just took two of three from the best team in baseball. The crowds were great, the games were all close. If you’re a fan, what more would you be waiting for?

Well, a little more from the offense would be a start. Seattle averages just 3.53 runs per game, but the way they’re grinding it out, we like their chances to keep the hot streak going against Washington.

                      Pick: Mariners
