Monday’s betting tips: AL dominating interleague

    Weather to watch

Wimbledon Day 1 : The first day of action at Wimbledon could be slowed by wet and cold conditions and the tournament’s organizers are bracing for bad weather for at least part of the first week. Centre Court is covered by Wimbledon’s $100 million roof, but be sure to check the weather for the matches played on the other courts. “The week leading up was wet, which refocuses everyone, gets us back in the routine of covering the courts and keeping them dry,” head groundsman designate Neil Stubley told reporters.

    Who’s hot

MLB: The over is 10-3 in Baltimore’s last 13 interleague games.

MLB: Milwaukee is 19-7 in its last 26 games as a favorite.

MLB: Texas has won 17 of its last 24 interleague games.

    Who’s not

MLB: Colorado has lost 13 of its last 18 road games.

MLB: Atlanta is just 2-16 in Tim Hudson’s last 18 interleague starts.

MLB: Florida is suffering through a 6-21 slump.

    Key stat

14 – Rafael Nadal has won each of his last 14 matches at Wimbledon, a streak that dates back to 2007. Nadal is a +200 favorite to win the tournament.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Hunter Pence, Houston Astros: Pence sat out both of the Astros’ games over the weekend and was scheduled for an MRI on his hyperextended elbow back in Houston on Sunday. He’s considered day-to-day for now, but the team will update his status once the test results come in. Pence’s .321 batting average puts him ninth in the bigs and he also has nine homers and 51 RBIs.

    Game of the day

New York Yankees at Cincinnati Reds (-125, 9)

    Notable quotable

“This one is different because I’ve pretty much had a full year off, and my body is different because you take time off, and it’s not the same. So my butt’s way softer than it normally is.” – Serena Willams on how she feels heading into Wimbledon following her long layoff. Oddsmakers have her listed as a +350 favorite to defend her title.

    Notes and tips

The American League is having its way with the NL in interleague play so far. Following Sunday afternoon’s action the AL was 30-12 through the first three days of interleague action. If you had wager on the American League in every game ahead of the Sunday Night Baseball matchup of the New York Yankees at the Chicago Cubs you would have been up about 17 units.

The Cleveland Indians fired hitting coach John Nunnally on Sunday and appointed the organizations minor league hitting instructor Bruce Fields. The move hardly comes as a shock. Cleveland’s offense has been terrible over the last month and was shut out six times during an 18-game span recently. The Indians were 5-13 during that slump and are now hitting just .251 on the year.

      Monday's six-pack

-- Surprising fact: Tim Wakefield is 3rd on Red Sox all-time win list, with 183, behind only Roger Clemens and Cy Young (192 each).

-- There are 22 current major leaguers whose dad played in big leagues.

-- You know those Stars/Stripes hats the teams wear on holidays? You can have one of your own, for a mere $36.95. Um, no thanks.

-- Remember Gallagher, the comedian who used to smash watermelons with a sledgehammer as part of his act? He's going to be in Saratoga this Saturday, at the Metro. Tickets are only $15.

-- Last time there were no Americans in the top 5 of a US Open? 1909.

-- Wonder if Eldrick Woods watched any of the golf this weekend.

      *******************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

      13) 80-year old Jack McKeon is expected to be named interim manager of the Florida Marlins Monday; McKeon started managing the Royals back when I was in 8th grade. I'm 51 now. Edwin Rodriguez "resigned" Sunday with the Marlins on a 1-18 skid.

      12) Will be interesting to see who the Marlins bring in as the permanent skipper; they'll need to make a splash, to sell tickets/luxury boxes for the new stadium that opens next season in downtown Miami.

      11) Nice touch by Dodgers Sunday, having Tom Gordon/Tony Gwynn throw out the first ball to their sons on Father's Day. Will be nicer if the ballclub can make payroll next week.

      10) Its hard to believe there are no rules governing how agents can poach a client from a competitor (a la Rafael Soriano LY). Luckily, Jose Reyes has some loyalty in his veins, as he eschewed weasel agent Scott Boras, who had been trying to steal Reyes away from Peter Greenberg, just as he did with Soriano last year.

One of Greenberg's assistants is godfather to two of Reyes' kids, so that probably helped prevent the switch. Say Reyes signs a $100M contract this winter; 3% of $100M is $3M, which is the agent's cut. Big money. By the way, Reyes is going to get a contract worth more than $100M.

      9) Boston Bruins had the Stanley Cup in Fenway Park Sunday, and threw out the first ball. Red Sox do a very good job of honoring the other teams from Boston who have won championships. Have to think it cultivates an atmosphere of expecting to win amongst their own players.

      8) Rotnei Clarke, Arkansas' leading returning scorer, wants out of Little Rock, but Mike Anderson won't give him his release, which is usually a formality after a coaching change. Clarke scored 15.2 ppg and made 44% of his 3's LY. Interesting to see how this plays out, since its not the first time this player has asked out of his scholarship.

      7) There is so little power/speed in baseball, it has clumped the majority of the teams closer together, and created closer games-- it has made the manager a more critical part of the team. Keeping the bullpen fresh/sharp, having the fielders on their toes in the field, mentally sharp, making the right lineup, these are the things that a manager can do to elevate his team.

Its where I totally disagree with Billy Beane, who has devalued how much a manager means, and has paid him thusly. Its why almost all his coaches skipped town after last season. Look at how bringing in Bob Melvin has improved Oakland's play- they beat Lincecum and Cain this weekend. If the players believe in the manager, it makes all the difference.

      6) The five pitchers currently in Oakland's starting rotation wear these uniform numbers: 53-47-52-88-65. Its like spring training in Arizona, but all nine pitchers who've started for the A's have done pretty well- they've got quality depth. Not a lot of teams can say that.

      5) I'm looking at the baseball standings and laughing; the A's have been a pathetic offensive team whose pitching rotation has been ravaged by lot of injuries, yet they're only five games out of first. What a country.

      4) I can't help it, love the GEICO commercial where the woodchucks are tossing wood into the water. Makes me laugh every time.

      3) Looking through some college football stuff, saw that even though June Jones has really improved SMU a lot, Mustangs are still just 1-11-1 vs the spread as a home favorite the last four years. That'll improve.

      2) Why are there so few good American golfers? I mean, when there are more guys on the leaderboard from Sweden than here, you have to wonder what the problem is.

      1) Golf is going to be an Olympic sport in 2016? I guess they've stopped pretending that there's even an ounce of amateurism left.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              STREAKING

Johnny Cueto (4-2, 1.68 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

Too bad Cincinnati didn’t have a few more pitchers like Cueto kicking around. Seems like the 25-year-old righty is the only hurler dealing for the Big Red Machine these days.

He’s 2-1 with a 0.89 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) and a 1.24 ERA over his last four trips to the hill.

"Johnny looked great," Reds first baseman Joey Votto told the Associated Press after Cueto’s latest outing. "He pounds the zone and locates his fastball. He's aggressive and he seems fearless. I mean, Matt Kemp's got 20 homers and he's hitting .330, and Johnny's going right after him. That says a lot."

Ricky Romero (6-6, 3.01 ERA), Toronto Blue Jays

Wait, Ricky Romero is dating Miss USA 2010? The same girl who got in hot water over those sexy pole dancing pictures?

Someone should have filled us in. That would explain why Romero is pitching with supreme confidence. It goes without saying - you date a Miss USA and you’re not going to have any low self-esteem issue.

Well, in case you didn’t know, the Jays are 4-3 in Romero’s last seven starts and he’s pitched at least seven innings in each of those appearances. He carries a 2.19 ERA over the seven-start stretch and the under is 4-2-1 during that time, too.

              SLUMPING

Fausto Carmona (4-8, 5.79 ERA), Cleveland Indians

We’re not sure what Carmona is doing on the bump these days, but one thing is certain - he isn’t fooling hitters. The big righty has become nothing more than an innings eater for the Indians.

He’s 1-5 with a 9.81 ERA in his last six appearances and he hasn’t produced a quality start since May 8. Yeah, that was a looooong time ago.Total bettors will be happy to know the over is 6-2 in his last eight starts despite 9- and 10-run totals in most of those games.

Carlos Zambrano (5-4, 4.59 ERA), Chicago Cubs

Ever wonder what Zambrano’s description would be if the Cubs tried to unload the knucklehead on some poor sap on E-bay?

For sale: One overweight, overpaid and overrated major league pitcher, who hits better than he hurls.

Hot lines: Monday’s best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox (-140, 8.5)

The last time Carlos Zambrano took the hill at U.S. Cellular Field, it wasn’t a pretty sight. He lasted just a single inning before getting the hook last June 25th in a 6-0 White Sox win and then proceeded to flip out at Derrek Lee in the dugout.

Baseball bettors didn’t see the Big Z for a while after that as he spent the next month or so going through anger management treatment.

Zambrano’s been his inconsistent self for most of this season and has allowed 12 runs over his last two starts while walking nine batters over that span.

You have to think he’ll get up this start though and Gavin Floyd will do the same. Floyd can grind it out with the best of them and we don’t expect to see a lot of runs on the board Monday.

Six of the last eight meetings between the two teams have played under and we like that trend to continue in Game 1 of the series.

                Pick: Under

New York Yankees at Cincinnati Reds (-125, 9)

The Reds finally snapped a nasty 16-inning scoring drought on Sunday, getting a two-run homer from Miguel Cairo in a 2-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays a day after manager Dusty Baker called his team out a bit.

"We didn't play very well," Reds manager Dusty Baker told reporters after Saturday’s 4-0 loss. "We didn't play good defense. We've got to keep working and fighting. It's three steps forward, two steps back. Tomorrow, we've got to take another step forward. This American League has been tough. We're 0-5 against the American League."

Now that the slump is out of the way, the Reds have a good chance to build on that momentum Monday. Johnny Cueto hasn’t allowed a run over his last two starts and we still don’t have all that much confidence in New York’s Ivan Nova.

                Pick: Reds

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB run report: This week's best betting trends
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

                      HOT TEAM: Minnesota Twins

                      THIS SEASON: 31-39
                      LAST WEEK: 5-0

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Giants for three, at the Brewers for three.

THE SKINNY: Well, well, well, it took three months, but the Minnesota Twins we all know -- the scrappy, never-say-die, do-what-it-takes-to-win-on-a-small-budget crew that Ron Gardenhire has established as a league power -- have finally arrived.

Listen, they may not have enough to challenge the rest of the way, but they’re still a well-balanced, well-managed club, and as long as they pitch this way, they will have great value moving forward. In five victories last week, they allowed one run or less in three of them. What’s more, Scott Baker and Nick Blackburn posted shutouts.

They are still offensively challenged -- keep in mind, Danny Valencia was the RBI leader through Sunday with 32 -- but under Gardenhire, you always know you have a team that knows how to play, and will get the most out of whatever lineup is thrown together. How did they have the start they had then? Who cares. Because even with injuries still mounting, Minnesota is back to playing Twins Baseball, and it might be worthwhile to have them on your radar.

                      COLD TEAM: Florida Marlins

                      THIS SEASON: 32-40
                      LAST WEEK: 0-7

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Angels for three, home to the Mariners for three.

THE SKINNY: We try to stray from the obvious here, but the Marlins are just too grand a disaster to not fade. They can’t hit. They can’t pitch. And leading into Monday’s series opener with Anaheim, they had lost 10 in a row.

It cost the hitting coach a job. It then cost a manager a job. In the end, perhaps John Mallee, who was fired, and Edwin Rodriguez, who resigned, might be better off because this team just isn’t that good. Consider that since June 12, the Marlins have been held to one run or less in five games.

The schedule toughened up in June, and the Marlins just don’t have the horses to compete with the likes of Milwaukee, Arizona, Atlanta and Philadelphia, who all had their way with them.

How bad is it? Through Sunday, Florida is 1-17 in June. And it’s tough to see an end in sight to this mess. As the losing drags on, their value is dipping, certainly. But if you’re in the market for a few, quick wins -- regardless of price -- fading Florida seems a safe option.

                      OVER TEAM: Milwaukee Brewers

                      O/U THIS SEASON: 35-34-4
                      O/U LAST WEEK: 5-2

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Rays for three, home to the Twins for three.

THE SKINNY: Milwaukee ran into a bit of a rough patch at Chicago and Boston last week, but it was more pitching related, as the Brewers’ bats continue to bash. Entering Monday’s series opener vs. Tampa Bay, the Brewers have scored five or more runs eight times in June.

The names you’d expect here are the ones coming through. Ryan Braun ended Sunday with a .311 average, 15 home runs, and 51 RBIs. And Prince Fielder was at .300, 19 and 60. But it’s the pitching that’s going to carry you through to more "overs."

The statistics don’t look all bad, with Shaun Marcum and his 84 strikeouts, and Yovani Gallardo and his eight wins, but lately, it just isn’t working. Boston, in three games, threw up 24 runs on the Brewers. And in the series before that, the Cubs rang up 22 in four games.

Eventually, the staff will probably correct itself, the schedule will lighten up a bit, and the pitching will go back to normal. Until then, the Brewers are more than worth their weight in “over” land.

                      UNDER TEAM: Toronto Blue Jays

                      O/U THIS SEASON: 37-32-3
                      O/U LAST WEEK: 1-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Braves for three, at the Cardinals for three.

THE SKINNY: Toronto may have shown late last week that interleague play may be a thorn in its side. Because as deep and as talented as the Blue Jays lineup is, they did not take well to seeing unfamiliar pitching. In a three-game series with Cincinnati that ended Sunday, the Blue Jays scored eight runs ... total.

With the pitcher batting in National League ballparks, it seems this American League-designed lineup might just struggle. Which is exactly why you should monitor them this week, as the Blue Jays hit Atlanta and St. Louis. Perhaps some more “unders” are on the horizon.

And let’s face it, even before interleague resurfaced, the Blue Jays weren’t lighting up the scoreboards. In three games vs. Baltimore leading up to the Reds series, they only scored 13 runs in three games. Jose Bautista has been all-world again, ending Sunday with a .338 average, 21 homers and 46 RBIs. But none of the other regulars are over .300, and Yunel Escobar, who was off to a career start, has cooled significantly.

The dog days appear to have arrived a bit early for Toronto. Keep the Blue Jays in mind, when thinking “unders.”
