Friday's betting tips: Yanks accused of cheating

    Who’s hot

MLB: The under is 11-2 in Dan Hudson’s last 13 home starts for Arizona.

MLB: Florida has won eight of its last nine games on astroturf.

WNBA: Minnesota is riding an 11-4 run against the spread dating back to last season.

    Who’s not

MLB: Kansas City is 4-10 in its last 14 meetings with St. Louis.

MLB: Oakland is just 7-20 in its last 27.

WNBA: Indiana is 3-7 against the spread in its last 10 trips to Seattle.

    Key stat

114-81: The San Antonio Silver Stars are the WNBA’s only unbeaten team both straight up and against the spread, but they’ve been outrebounded 114-81 through their first three games. They’re set as 5.5-point underdogs Friday in Phoenix when they visit the Mercury and the league’s second-leading rebounder Candice Dupree (10 boards per game).

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves: Atlanta scratched Hanson from his scheduled start on Friday with right shoulder tendinitis. It’s a big loss for the club as he has a 2.48 ERA with 89 strikeouts this season and the Braves will used the next few days to decide if he’ll need to go on the 15-day DL. Randall Delgado is expected to start in his place Friday against the Rangers.

    Game of the day

Milwaukee Brewers at Boston Red Sox (-115, 9.5)

    Notable quotable

"I don't know if it says that I've got a short memory. I took the experience from Augusta, and I learned a lot from it. But, yeah, I mean you're going into the U.S. Open. You can't be thinking about what's happened before. You've got to just be thinking about this week, and how you can best prepare, and how you can get yourself around the golf course." – Rory McIlroy after firing a 6-under 65 to take the lead at the US Open on Thursday. McIlroy has been under the spotlight since falling apart in the final round at Augusta. McIlroy is set at +250 to win the US Open.

    Notes and tips

The New York Yankees had their way with the Texas Rangers this week and Texas says the Bronx Bombers were stealing signs throughout the series. Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba started shouting at Andruw Jones while he was on second base in the fifth inning during Wednesday night’s 12-4 New York win. After the game Mark Teixeira said Torrealba had brought it up a couple of nights earlier as well. Jones didn’t exactly deny the allegations. "He's just trying to make excuses (because they're) getting their butts kicked,” Jones told reporters. “That's why people (give) multiple signs when people are on second base. I'm sure our pitchers do the same thing, because we might think they're trying to give location of the pitch when people are on second base.” The Yanks visit the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

The Vancouver Canucks may have lost this season’s Stanley Cup Final to the Boston Bruins in Wednesday’s Game 7, but early numbers have them favored to lift Lord Stanley’s mug next season. Most books have Vancouver set at +500 while Boston is the second favorite at +800. Washington sits at +850 and Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Jose all check in a +900.

      Friday's six-pack

Highest paid ASSISTANT football coaches, at public universities
-- Gus Malzahn, Auburn $1.3M—This guy was a high school coach not that long ago.

-- Charlie Weis, Florida $765,000—He should send Tom Brady 10% for making him look like a better coach than he is.

-- Todd Grantham, Georgia $750,000—Gets paid to stop the offenses of the two guys listed above.

-- Ellis Johnson, South Carolina $700,000—Have I mentioned that all these guys are ASSISTANT coaches, not the head man?

-- John Chavis, LSU $700,000—Les Miles was the biggest benefactor when Tennessee hired Lane Kiffin, who brought his dad to Knoxville as defensive coordinator and let Chavis walk.

-- Steve Kragthorpe, LSU $700,000— This guy was 44-43 as the head coach at Tulsa/Louisville for seven years. It helps to have really good players. LSU has lot more of those than Tulsa or Louisville.

Friday's List of 13: Notes from a crazy world, where cash in king

      13) A crazy world got crazier this week, when 25-year old Crystal Harris cancelled her upcoming wedding to 85-year old Hugh Hefner, which was scheduled for Saturday at the Playboy Mansion. Stunning as it may sound, rumor has it that Ms Harris wanted a bigger weekly allowance and bolted when she didn’t get it. As a wise person once said, “Cash is king.”

      12) Overnight TV ratings for Game 7 of Stanley Cup finals were highest for Finals game since 2003, and it wasn’t even a very good game, so that bodes well for the NHL.

      11) Bruins’ goalie Tim Thomas was a 9th-round draft pick of the old Quebec Nordiques (now Colorado Avalanche) in 1994; it took him another nine years to get to the NHL, but he’s sure made the most of it once he got there.

      10) Bruins were tenth team to force a Game 7 in Finals after being down 2-0; they were the fourth team of the ten to win that Game 7.

      9) Red Sox moved Saturday's game with Milwaukee from 1:00 to 7:00 to accomodate the Bruins' victory parade, which is Saturday morning.

      8) University of Detroit is naming its basketball court after former coach Dick Vitale on December 5, when the Titans play St John’s on ESPN. Couldn’t happen to a nicer, more energetic guy.

      7) Quite a race shaping up for NL Manager of the Year, with Arizona-Pittsburgh-NY Mets all overachieving so far this season. Would have to give the edge to Arizona’s Kirk Gibson so far, but if the Pirates finish over .500 for first time since 1992, it would be hard not to vote for Pittsburgh’s Clint Hurdle.

      6) Justin Upton hit a walkoff homer as Arizona beat the Giants 3-2 and stayed within a game and a half of San Francisco int he NL West.

      5) Washington Nationals won their sixth game in a row last night; Florida Marlins have one win this month, and are now in the NL East cellar.

      4) Plaxico Burress just spent two years in jail; he gets out of jail and then reveals that he’d rather not play for Tom Coughlin, his old coach with the Giants. You know Coughlin, the coach who won a Super Bowl with those Giants, thanks in part of Burress, but Burress is a fool. He should just be quiet until its time to sign a contract, then thank the good lord anyone is still willing to pay him to play ball.

      3) Whats with burning cars? How does that help anything? Maybe the people in Vancouver are upset about the failing Greek economy, or maybe the Greeks are mad the Canucks lost in the Finals. Who knows.......

      2) Under the proposed new Wild Card system, the two Wild Cards in each league would play a one-game playoff to see who joins the divisional winners in the playoffs. So far, everyone seems to like this idea. For now.

      1) But here’s whats going to happen; every year, either Bronx or Boston is going to be playing in the AL version, since only one of them can win the AL East. Say the Red Sox win the East, the Indians win the Central and Bronx/Detroit are the two AL Wild Cards; Bombers and Tigers then play a one-game playoff.

Say the pitching matchup comes up Verlander vs Nova. Detroit is going to win that game, the northeast media (not to mention FOX) is going to howl bloody hell and that format is going the way of the Edsel and phones with dials on them. Because TV ratings make money and as that wise person I know often says, “Cash is king”.

Lady luck: Friday's best WNBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Silver Stars at Phoenix Mercury (-5.5, 177)

So far, so good for the San Antonio Silver Stars, who head into this one as the league’s only unbeaten team both straight up and against the spread.

They hammered the Tulsa Shock in their first two games of the season and then upset Atlanta 86-74 on the road as a 2.5-point underdog last weekend. Rookie Danielle Adams had a lot to do with the club’s latest victory.

Adams put up 32 points off the bench and hit five 3-pointers to help San Antonio erase a seven-point deficit in the third quarter.

"Coach told me I had the green light so I'm going to take every open shot I get," Adams told reporters. “I was just feeling it tonight. I had the veterans there to back me up, so it was a pretty good feeling.”

The quick start has all of the Silver Stars feeling pretty good, but this will be a stiff test with Phoenix playing its home opener.

Still looks like too many points to us though.

        Pick: Silver Stars

Atlanta Dream at Minnesota Lynx (-4.5, 164)

As long as Rebekkah Brunson keeps doing her thing, the Lynx are going to be tempting bet on most nights.

Brunson is putting up 14.8 points and 14 rebounds per game in the early going this season and is coming off a dominant night in the team’s win at Seattle, notching 22 points and 14 boards.

"We use the word relentless with Brunson, and she takes great pride in that," Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve told the team’s official website. "She brings it every night she plays and hangs her hat on that. Her approach brings her a great deal of success and I'll tell you...players around the league...they don't want to matchup against her."

Atlanta will have its hands full on Friday. The Dream are giving up 84 points a night so far and are getting hammered on the glass so even though this line is up a bit from the open, we’ll still side with the Lynx.

        Pick: Lynx

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tips for betting MLB Interleague play
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interleague play is upon us and whether you’re a supporter of it or not, there’s no denying it adds a different element to the marathon baseball season.

There’s the obvious contrast in styles between American League and National League teams, as well as the vast number of unfamiliar matchups from year to year. So here are a few tips that can help you figure out how to bet these games.

                AL dominance is no fluke

In 2006 the American League posted a .611 winning percentage in interleague play. Now, that's the best single season success the AL has had in interleague play, but the junior circuit is 420-335 against their senior cousins over the last three years.

And this isn’t a short-term trend by any stretch. The AL has won the battle seven straight years and nine of the last 11 campaigns. It’s simply a case of the AL bats being significantly stronger while the pitching has essentially become a wash. Despite the AL’s apparent dominance, remember that National League teams have still won 232 interleague games over the last two seasons and actually won 21 of 42 games in the first weekend of interleague play earlier this season.

Keep an eye on the underdogs

While the home teams have a more pronounced advantage during interleague play, it doesn’t mean you should blindly bet them. With players switching leagues more than ever thanks to the current state of free agency, it isn’t as big of a deal for an American League pitcher to take his hacks over in a National League park. By the same token, the AL teams aren’t the only ones that benefit from having a DH in their lineup. Most NL teams have at least one big bat on their bench that is just itching to fill the role. More often than not oddsmakers will overvalue home teams and that opens the door for some good underdog bets.

Let the runline be your friend

Don’t hesitate to lay the extra run when value presents itself. For whatever reason, we tend to see a higher percentage of lopsided results over the course of interleague play. During the opening weekend of IL action three years ago, 34 of 42 games (81 percent) were decided by at least two runs. I try to avoid laying the extra run with big favorites. Instead I’ll look to turn teams priced in the –110 to –150 range into substantial plus-money payouts by giving the run-and-a-half.

                Teams to watch

It may surprise you to find out that the Chicago White Sox are among the

leaders for all-time wins in interleague play. At 142-104 they’re just a

few percentage points behind the Yankees for the best interleague

record in baseball. In the NL, it’s the Florida Marlins leading the

charge at 127-107. The Baltimore Orioles own the worst record in the

American League at 108-139 while the Pittsburgh Pirates pull up the rear

                in the NL at 73-123.

                  Friday, June 17

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  STREAKING

Jason Marquis (7-2, 3.67 ERA), Washington Nationals

A suspension is about the only thing that can slow down Marquis these days. The veteran righty just served a five-game suspension for plunking Justin Upton back on June 5. He hasn’t pitched since holding the Padres to one run in six innings on June 10.

Washington backers will be happy to see Marquis back on the mound. The Nats are 6-1 in his last seven starts, despite being underdogs in six of those seven appearances. That’s why Marquis is No. 2 on Covers.com’s Top money pitchers list.

Mike Leake (6-2, 4.06 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

Seems fitting that a klepto would be a steal at the betting window. Yes Mike Leake enjoys striking out major league hitters and smuggling American Rag T-Shirts out of Macy’s department stores.

The Reds are 4-0 in in Leake’s last four starts and the young hurler carries a 1.93 ERA over the hot stretch.

"Mainly my head is just back on straight a little bit," Leake told the Associated Press. "I think I lost it there for a little."

                  SLUMPING

Josh Tomlin (7-4, 4.14 ERA), Cleveland Indians

Maybe no other player embodies the Indians’ collapse than this starting pitcher. Tomlin hadn’t surrendered more than three in any of his first nine trips to the bump. It’s been a very different story since.

Tomlin 1-3 with a 8.61 ERA in his last four appearances. Gross.

Wade Davis (5-5, 4.81 ERA), Tampa Bay Rays

Kind of seems like we’re dumping on the American League on the first day of interleague here, doesn’t it? I mean, we could have easily subbed Houston’s Brett Myers in here.

Davis gets the dishonor though because of his tendency to give up the big fly. The big righty has been taken out of the park 10 times in his last six trips to the hill. The Rays are 1-5 during that stretch and the over is 4-0 in his last four starts.

Hot lines: Friday’s best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Colorado Rockies (-120, 9)

With Thursday’s 6-2 win over Cleveland, the Tigers overtook the Indians for first place in the AL Central division.

Detroit has now won 13 of its last 15 games and the club has its pitching staff to thank for many of those wins. Max Scherzer gave up two runs in the first inning but settled down after that to earn his ninth win of the season, tying for the MLB lead.

"Right now, we're playing pretty well. We're coming together," Scherzer told reporters. "But the thing is, we still have another 100. We have to grind it out and get these series wins."

The Tigers have won each of their last five series but have just one win in their last nine meetings with the Rockies.

“We’ve got a little something going,” manager Jim Leyland added. “But it’s such a long grind. I don’t get carried away.”

That sort of approach will serve them well. We think Detroit will keep its run going on Friday.

                    Pick: Tigers

San Diego Padres at Minnesota Twins (-130, 8)

On June 1, it looked like the Minnesota Twins might as well pack it in and start thinking about next season. A little over two weeks later, the outlook is a lot different.

Michael Cuddyer continued his great season with a solo homer in the second inning Thursday against the White Sox and that was all the support Nick Blackburn needed as the Twins picked up a 1-0 win. Cuddyer is now hitting .282 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs on the year.

"We're executing a lot better now," manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters. "We're getting bunts down. We're hitting and running. Guys are playing loose and not tight and not worried about making mistakes.

"When you start doing that and you get good pitching behind it and don't make the fundamental mistakes, everything kind of falls into place."

Plus, the club is getting Joe Mauer back on Friday and a host of other regulars shouldn’t be far behind him. Maybe the season isn’t lost yet for the Twins after all.

                    Pick: Twins
