MLB Odds: Chicago Cubs host Milwaukee Brewers

The resurgent Milwaukee Brewers have moved into contention in the National League Central standings due to their excellent play at Miller Park, but life on the road has been much more difficult.

The Brewers dropped a 1-0 contest Monday to open a four-game set against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field and will play the third game of the series Wednesday night with the first pitch scheduled for 5:05 (PT).

Milwaukee has registered a major league-best 25-9 home record thus far during the 2011 campaign, but has fallen short on the road with a 13-20 mark entering Tuesday’s action. Offensively, the team is hitting just .222 away from Miller Park, while averaging 3.15 runs per contest.

The Brewers have been playing great baseball overall despite road bumps along the way, tallying a 24-8 record since May 9, which is the best record in the majors. The starting staff has played its part in the team’s recent success, going 19-5 with a 3.31 ERA over the last 35 games.

Left-hander Chris Narveson (3-4, 4.32 ERA) is scheduled to make his 14th start of the season and has led the team to consecutive victories over his last two outings. He has compiled a 1-0 record and 2.70 ERA in two June starts. Narveson will be looking to win his first game on the road this year, coming in with an 0-3 record and 4.69 ERA.

On a positive note, he has given up just 36 hits in 40 1/3 frames away from Miller Park. The ball club has posted a 1-6 mark in his last seven road starts, while the ‘under’ has gone 5-2 in those contests.

Chicago returned home from a 2-8 road trip to pick up the victory Monday night courtesy of an infield ground out in the eighth. The Cubs have enjoyed success against the Brewers since the 1997 season, posting a 108-97 mark over that span, including a 53-49 record at Wrigley Field.

Carlos Zambrano (5-3, 4.40 ERA) hopes to continue his recent success against Milwaukee, already proving victorious in a 7-4 road win on April 8. The right-hander allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings in that start.

Zambrano would rather face the Brewers at their home ballpark for this particular contest, as he’s registered a 10-5 record and 3.35 ERA in 17 career outings (16 starts) at Miller Park. The Cubs have won seven of the last eight meetings with Zambrano on the hill against the Brewers, but are actually just 2-7 in his last nine home starts in the series.

The 30-year-old out of Venezuela has done a good job of holding Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun at bay no matter the venue, limiting him to a .243 average and one home run in 37 career at-bats.

Home teams have gone 10-4 this year with umpire Ed Hickox calling balls and strikes this season, but the margin of victory has been minimal at 0.36 runs per contest. It’s also important to note that the Cubs are 0-4 in Zambrano’s last four starts with him behind the dish.

Weather forecasts suggest game-time temperatures in the low-60s with a sixty percent chance of showers throughout the contest. The wind is expected to be 5-10 mph out of the southeast (right to left).

MLB Betting: NY Yankees host Rangers on ESPN

The Yanks took four of the first six meetings with Texas this season.
The New York Yankees look to continue to salvage their homestand when they host the Texas Rangers in the middle of a 3-game set on Wednesday night. The status of Derek Jeter is on everyone’s mind as he approaches 3,000 hits.

ESPN will have the first pitch from Yankee Stadium at 4:05 p.m. (PT). Ivan Nova (5-4, 4.30 ERA) shoots for his third straight quality start against Derek Holland (5-1, 4.41 ERA).

The Yankees (36-28) started this 10-game homestand by getting swept three by Boston. New York then took three of four from struggling Cleveland before welcoming Texas on Tuesday. That result is still pending with the Yanks only 145 favorites despite CC Sabathia on the hill.

Jeter hurt his calf on Monday night. He was listed as doubtful for Tuesday and could be out Wednesday as well. The iconic shortstop is just six hits shy of 3,000, but may not accomplish the feat at home now.

Nova has pitched well his last two starts at the L.A. Angels and home to Cleveland. He allowed two runs each time over the course of 13 innings (1.38 ERA). That came on the heels of four mediocre starts (5.79 ERA).

The 24-year-old right-hander has five quality starts in seven tries at home, but just a 4.54 ERA there overall. The team is 4-3 in his home starts.

This is Nova’s third appearance against Texas this year. He allowed five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings in an April home start (5-3 loss), before throwing 7 1/3 scoreless innings at Texas in May (4-1 win).

New York has needed Nova to step up, especially with the recent injury to Bartolo Colon. He was placed on the DL with a hamstring injury with Phil Hughes (shoulder) sidelined as well. Hector Noesi is likely to start Thursday afternoon’s finale.

The Rangers (36-31) lead the AL West by two games over surprising Seattle. They started their 10-game road trip by losing three of four at suddenly-hot Minnesota. New York trails Boston by 2.5 in the AL East.

Holland has done a good job overall this year, already making more starts (13) than all of last year (10). He’s capable of throwing a complete-game shutout, like he did at Cleveland two starts ago, but only has six quality starts in the 13 attempts.

The 24-year-old lefty has a solid 7.71 strikeout rate, but has allowed 10 long balls this year, including six in the last four games. New York easily leads MLB in home runs (95), so that’s a dangerous situation.

Holland surrendered two dingers in New York back in April in a 5-2 loss. He was responsible for all the runs over 7 2/3 innings. He’s 0-2 with a 7.80 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) at Yankee Stadium.

Holland also struggled in his May home outing against the Yankees, lasting just three innings while allowing five walks and four runs. That makes his ERA 7.59 against them this year.

The Yankees are 7-1 in their last eight games against a left-handed starter.

New York is 4-2 against the Rangers this year, going 2-1 both home and away. That’s partial revenge for losing to them in the ALCS last year.

New York is just 20-17 at home this season (-6.7 units) after going 52-29 there last year. The ‘under’ is 2-0-1 in its last three home games after the ‘over’ went 8-0-1 in its previous nine there.

Texas is 16-18 on the road this year, translating into -2.2 units.

Besides Jeter, New York catcher Russell Martin (back) was doubtful on Tuesday. Rangers’ catcher Mike Napoli (oblique) is their only positional player on the DL.

Weather should be clear and in the 70s on Wednesday after some showers on Tuesday. Texas will throw C.J. Wilson on Thursday afternoon against the likely Noesi.
