Wednesday’s betting tips: Nats pitcher tied to drug lord

    Who’s hot

NHL: Vancouver has is 46-18 in its last 64 games as a favorite.

MLB: Boston has won 20 of its last 27 road games.

MLB: Minnesota is 9-2 in its last 11 overall.

    Who’s not

NHL: The over is 2-6-2 in the last 10 meetings between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks.

MLB: The Chicago Cubs were riding a 3-13 slump heading into Tuesday’s action.

MLB: Cleveland is 7-20 in its last 27 games in Detroit.

    Key stat

32:33 – The Vancouver Canucks have led the Boston Bruins for just over 32 minutes in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. However, home teams are 17-2 when playing Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in front of their hometown fans. Road teams are 0-6 in this season’s finals between Boston and Vancouver, while the Canucks are pegged as -155 favorites in the last game of the season.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Russell Martin, New York Yankees – It looks as though the Yankees will be without another bat in the lineup after Derek Jeter already hit the DL on Tuesday. Martin (back) may soon join him. He returned to the starting lineup over the weekend but hasn’t played since. The club hopes a few rest days will be all he needs but a DL stint seems likely.

    Game of the day

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-155, 5)

    Notable quotable

“I feel like I’m right on the cusp of getting my confidence back with the putter because I’m rolling the ball better than I have but not making them. There’s a small difference getting the right speed for the line, but I’m close. I know what it takes to be in contention here. This course set-up, unlike past US Opens, tests your entire game. This one tests your short game.” – Phil Mickelson ahead of Thursday’s opening round of the U.S. Open. The tournament’s odds differ a bit depending on the sportsbook, but he’s tied at +1200 with Lee Westwood and Luke Donald as the favorites at a couple of shops.

    Notes and tips

Washington National starter Livan Hernandez is under federal investigation for alleged connections with a convicted Puerto Rican drug trafficker, according to a Washington Times report on Tuesday. The report suggests Hernandez was involved with money laundering in the purchasing of two sports cars for Angel Ayala-Vazquez in 2006. Hernandez is alleged to be the “straw buyer” for Ayala-Vazquez in the 63-page indictment. Hernandez is 3-8 with a 4.15 ERA this season and is a +115 underdog Wednesday at home to St. Louis.

Serena Williams started slowly in her first match since last year’s Wimbledon final, but eventually got it together to defeat Tsvetana Pironkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Aegon International. "Mentally I was there,” she told reporters following the win. “I could have done a lot of things better. But that's OK. Going forward I'll expect to do things better. I was just really focused, just trying to get my feet moving, which was a task in itself.” Williams is set at +450 to win at Wimbledon while Maria Sharapova is the outright favorite at +300.

      Wednesday's six-pack

-- NFL preseason games generate roughly $700M in revenue for the owners, which is a strong reason why they want the season to start on time. If the owners start to lose money, then they're going to want the players to lose money too, then it begins to get ugly.

-- Rick Carlisle is 11th NBA coach to win a title who also won one as a player. Carlisle was a sub with the Celtics in the 80's.

-- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off turned 25 years old last week; still no idea why the one kid was wearing a Red Wings’ jersey when the movie was set in Chicago, but an excellent movie.

-- Brewers won Zach Greinke’s last seven starts; on flip side, Padres are 0-7 at home when Clayton Richard pitches.

-- Had no idea there are bottles of champagne that cost $90,000 each. Apparently, Mark Cuban bought one in Miami late Monday night, then left a $20,000 tip for the help.

-- Miss Montana/Miss North Dakota are both 100-1 longshots to win Miss USA pageant. For what its worth, Sarah Palin was once runnerup in the Miss Alaska pageant.

      **************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Random stuff as we start Year 11..........

      13) Interesting subplot in College World Series. Kevin Stallings is hoop coach at Vanderbilt, and a very good coach; his son is the catcher on North Carolina’s baseball team. As fate would have it, UNC plays Vandy in the College World Series this weekend in Omaha. The elder Stallings says he is rooting for his son, but won’t wear Carolina colors at the game.

      12) Damn, doesn’t it seem like Mark Cuban has owned the Mavericks longer than 11 years? Funny how Cuban has been dignified in victory; he’s paying for the team’s victory parade in Dallas. Classy all the way.

      11) Consensus seems to be that the Heat need to surround Wade/James with younger, more athletic players who will progress as the season goes on. Just hope the naysayers don’t place all the blame at the coach’s feet, which often happens in the NBA. That wouldn’t be fair if Erik Spoelstra lost his job over this, but it wouldn't be the first time in the NBA.

      10) Reds’ 2B Brandon Phillips spoke the truth Sunday night when he said that the Sunday night ESPN games from the west coast (5pm local starts) are brutal on hitters, saying how tough it is to see a pitched ball. Nolan Ryan got at least one of his no-hitters in a game like that with the Angels.

      9) How would you like to shell out a small fortune for your kid to go to Dartmouth, and the commencement speaker when he/she graduates is Conan O’Brien; what, George Lopez wasn’t available that day?

      8) Disgraced NYC politician Anthony Weiner, who sent pictures of his weiner to various girlfriends, is a graduate of Plattsburgh State, where many a scholar has studied. Doubtful his alma mater will be inviting Mr Weiner to speak at any of its graduation ceremonies.

      7) Have to give Royals’ P Vin Mazzaro some credit; he got lit up for 14 earned runs in a May 16 relief appearance, then got sent to AAA, but he worked at it, got called back up and blanked the Angels for seven innings Sunday, so good comeback by him.

      6) WAC may have struck gold when it invited sleeping giant Seattle to join its ranks in 2012-13. With no NBA team in Seattle anymore, the public will get behind Cameron Dollar’s team, and they could become a WAC power fairly quickly. Texas State, UT-San Antonio and Denver are also joining the WAC not this fall, but in fall of ’12.

      5) TV advertising revenue on cable stations is up 10-12% from this time LY, partly because of the NFL’s uncertain status, and partly because Oprah’s show went off the air. If the NFL doesn't settle with its players soon, their advertising money is going to fly away to other places.

      4) This just in; Justin Verlander is really good.

      3) Steve Williams, who usually caddies for Eldrick Woods, is on the bag for Adam Scott at the US Open this week; interesting to see if anything comes from that arrangement, since Scott doesn't have a regular caddy as we speak. Woods was last seen or crutches (again); is he done for 2011?

      2) Credit to Dallas Baptist College for getting one step from the College World Series in just its sixth year of D-I baseball. Lot of good ballplayers in Texas, but still, that’s impressive work. DBC was eliminated by Cal in the Super Regionals last weekend.

      1) The other fascinating subplot of the College World Series this weekend is the story of the Cal Bears; their baseball program was supposed to be eliminated by the school at end of this school year for financial reasons, but alumni/fans stepped up, the program was saved, and now they're off to Omaha for an unlikely trip to a College World Series. Good for them.

Home side won all six games in series so far, outscoring visitors 21-5, as Canucks won all three home games by a goal each, two by 1-0 scores. It will be Luongo in goal for hosts after he was chased in less than 10:00 of last game. Boston has outscored Canucks 13-1 in periods 1-2 in series, still finds themselves needing road win to take Cup. Vancouver's scoring by period in series: 1-0-6-1; thats right, they scored one goal before the third period in six games. Canucks are 2-31 on power play in series; B's are 1-13 on power play in three games in this building. Two factors big in Vancouver's favor: they're 3-0 at home, 3-0 in close games. Pressure is on Canucks though; all of Canada is pulling for them to 18-year drought in which no Canadian franchise has won the Stanley Cup.

Bruins at Canucks Game 7: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-152, 5)

        Series tied 3-3

THE STORY: After playing 106 games, the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins will have one contest to determine which team will hoist Lord Stanley's Cup. Every shift will be magnified and every goal will be crucial. On Wednesday, the teams will settle the score in Game 7 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. Both clubs held serve on home ice this series, although in distinctly different manners. The Canucks won a trio of one-goal games, while the Bruins enjoyed three blowout victories. Presidents' Trophy-winning Vancouver will vie for its first Stanley Cup in franchise history, while Boston will attempt to win its first title since 1972.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Although it is an Original Six franchise, Boston will play in its very first Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final Wednesday. Since winning their last Stanley Cup, the Bruins have lost in their last five trips to the final. Brad Marchand, Milan Lucic, defenseman Andrew Ference and Michael Ryder scored in the first period of Game 6 as Boston netted four goals in a span of 4:14 to set a Stanley Cup Final record. The Bruins' four-goal outburst eclipsed the mark of 5:29 set by the Montreal Canadiens against the Detroit Red Wings on March 31, 1956. For his part, Marchand opened the scoring 5:31 into the game for his franchise rookie-record ninth goal of the postseason. David Krejci added a 5-on-3 power-play goal and veteran Mark Recchi notched three assists.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: Vancouver has previously played in a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Mark Messier's New York Rangers unceremoniously eliminated the Canucks in 1994. Vezina Trophy finalist Roberto Luongo has been dominant at home in this series, permitting two goals on 95 shots for a sparkling .979 save percentage in three games. On the road, well, it's been a nightmare. He yielded 15 goals on 66 shots for a brutal .773 save percentage in Boston. Coach Alain Vigneault confirmed that Luongo will be in net for Game 7. Captain Henrik Sedin secured his first goal, and point, of the series when he scored 22 seconds into the third period in Game 6. Daniel Sedin notched two assists and has four points in the series. Defenseman Kevin Bieksa registered a career-high eight shots Monday, but his ill-advised line change led to Lucic's goal in the first period. Second-line left wing Mason Raymond suffered an undisclosed injury after a hit by defenseman Johnny Boychuk during the first shift in Game 6. He was taken to a Boston-area hospital on a stretcher.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Vezina Trophy finalist and perhaps leading Conn Smythe Trophy candidate, Tim Thomas, turned aside 36 shots to force Game 7. He has yielded just eight goals in six contests in his series and is tied with Vancouver's Kirk McLean (1994) with 761 saves in a single postseason. Thomas has surrendered just five goals en route to improving to 3-0 in elimination games in the 2011 playoffs. Maxim Lapierre netted his second goal in as many contests Monday. He had one goal in his previous 22 playoff games. NHL scoring champion Daniel Sedin, who had a pair of assists Monday, has four points in the series.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Boston went -1 for 5 in Game 6 to improve to 5 for 26 for the series and 7 for 83 in the playoffs. For its part, Vancouver continued to struggle with the man advantage in the Stanley Cup Final. The Canucks went 1 for 6 in Game 6 to improve to 2 for 31 on the power play.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings in Vancouver.
        * Favorite is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
        * Home team is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
        * Under is 6-2-2 in the last 10 meetings.

LAST WORD: Wednesday's Game 7 is the 16th all-time in NHL history and sixth since 2000. The home team has won 12 of the previous 15.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bet
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-155, 5)

        Well, now what?

One of the craziest NHL Finals in recent memory comes to an end Wednesday when the Canucks host the Bruins in Game 7 and if you feel like you honestly have a good handle on the game, you’re among the vast minority.

You can roll with the home team dominance theory if you like since no team has won on the road yet in the series, but then you still have to account for Boston’s overwhelming scoring advantage and Roberto Luongo’s Jekyll and Hyde routine.

If you’re leaning toward the Bruins, you have to worry about their feistiness finally getting the better of them. Vancouver actually showed a little life on the power play at the end of Game 6 and could explode at any time.

The way we see it – and the way the Alain Vigneault will spin this – is Vancouver was the best team in the league this season and has earned the right to home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs. Now they’re in position to take advantage of all their hard work.

Considering all the injuries both teams are working around at this point, last change is a massive advantage that could be the difference in itself.

The last thing Canucks bettors wanted to hear was Daniel Sedin give a halfhearted Game 7 guarantee that will surely be on the Bruins’ bulletin board.

"We're going to win Game 7," Sedin told the Vancouver Sun Monday night following the 5-2 loss. "We're 3-3 and we won all three games at home and we have the fourth game at home. So we have the seventh game at home and we'll take that. We are confident."

That said, everything comes back to Luongo, and he's nothing better than a crapshoot at this point.

Still, if we had to choose a side we'd go with Boston but like we’ve been saying, the under has made the most sense throughout this series and we’ll stick with that for the final game of the season.

        Pick: Under

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Wednesday's streaking and slumping starters
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Jhoulys Chacin, Colorado Rockies (7-4, 2.90 ERA)

There isn’t much to dislike about Chacin. He’s coming off what might have been one of his best performances of his career – allowing just three hits over eight shutout innings to go along with eight strikeouts and three walks against the Dodgers.

Without him, the Rockies would be in a real mess without Jorge De La Rosa and as Ubaldo Jimenez continues to struggle. Chacin is currently pegged as a -160 favorite against Mat Latos and the San Diego Padres.

Erik Bedard, Seattle Mariners (3-4, 3.47 ERA)

You’d never know that Bedard is coming off an 18-month injury layoff the way he is pitching. He is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA over his last eight starts and has struck out 48 with 12 walks over that span.

It would be nice if he could get a little run support, though. He has booked three straight no-decisions but Seattle has won each of those games. Bedard hasn’t allowed more than three runs in nine outings and those trade rumors of him heading to the Yankees just won’t go away.

              Slumping

Fausto Carmona, Cleveland Indians (3-8, 5.71 ERA)

Carmona needs to get it going in a hurry. He is 0-5 in his last eight starts and sports a fat 8.49 ERA during the skid.

His last trip to the hill was an interesting one as he fired a 94 mph heater just above the head of Yankees slugger Mark Teixera after he had given up a home run.

"I tried to change the plan," Carmona said through an interpreter after asking about Teixeira’s reaction. "As much as he knows me, I know him too. He was diving over the plate."

Carmona is set as a +120 underdog Wednesday in Detroit.

              J.A. Happ, Houston Astros (3-8, 5.04 ERA)

Happ’s numbers don’t look great, but he hasn’t been as awful as they suggest either.

He was hit hard in allowing six earned runs over 5 1/3 innings in a 9-2 loss to the Cardinals last week, but hadn’t allowed more than three runs in eight starts before that. With eight losses already, Happ’s double his previous high of four losses in a season.

Houston fired pitching coach Brad Arnsberg on Tuesday so maybe that will spur the pitching staff on a bit.

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Houston Astros (-115, 7.5)

There has been talk that the Houston Astros were getting ready to blow things up for a while now. On Tuesday, the first shot was fired when pitching coach Brad Arnsberg was canned and Doug Brocail was named as his replacement.

Houston’s team ERA of 4.69 puts them 15th out of 16 NL teams, but this seems to be a move that shocked a bunch of people close to the team, including a number of beat writers.

“It got less and less fun to come to the ballpark, and that’s not good,” Arnsberg told reporters. “My nature with the players that I’m around, there’s 100 percent of those pitchers who would always have my back.”

A lot of the problem is the team’s bats don’t have their pitching staff’s back. The Astros are putting up just 4.03 runs per game, but J.A. Happ has been pretty good lately so we’ll jump on Houston and hope the bats wake up in time for this one.

                Pick: Astros

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks (-105, 8.5)

Considering everything that has gone wrong for the Giants this season, they’ve done pretty well to be battling it out with the Diamondbacks for first spot in the NL West.

Once Pablo Sandoval gets back in the groove following a lengthy stint on the DL, they could really start making some noise.

"Last year, when we really took off, we got a spark with [Buster] Posey coming up and [Andres] Torres earning a spot," Aubrey Huff told MLB.com. "Having Pablo back, with the way he was swinging before he got hurt, we definitely need the help."

Sandoval was hitting .313 with five homers and 14 RBIs before hitting the shelf and maybe he can give Madison Bumgarner some help. The lefty is 2-8 on the year but is getting just 2.7 runs from his offense per start.

                Pick: Giants
