Monday’s betting tips: Injuries ruin Padres' rotation

    Who’s hot

NHL: Vancouver is 15-6 in its last 21 road games.

MLB: Detroit is 10-3 in its last 13.

MLB: Seattle has won nine of its last 12 home games.

    Who’s not

NHL: The over is 1-6-2 in the last nine meetings between the Canucks and Bruins.

MLB: The Chicago Cubs are 2-10 in their last 12.

MLB: The Florida Marlins are riding a 1-9 slump.

    Key stat

47-27: After being pushed around in a pair of losses in Boston, the Canucks asserted themselves on home ice, outhitting the Bruins 47-27 in Game 5’s 1-0 victory to give them a 3-2 series lead. Vancouver was whistled for the first three penalties of the game in the first period but managed to keep Boston off the board while Maxim Lapierre scored the contest’s lone goal in the third period.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Bartolo Colon, New York Yankees – The Yankees’ pitching staff suffered another blow with Colon hitting the shelf with a hamstring injury. The 38-year-old is 5-3 with a 3.10 ERA and the team doesn’t think the injury will keep him out of more than a start or two.

    Game of the day

Vancouver Canucks at Boston Bruins (-145, 5)

    Notable quotable

"We're going to have to tinker with the lineup and do whatever we can to try to get better. We were 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position today. You can't expect to win when you do that." – Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta after Sunday’s 9-1 loss to the New York Yankees. The Indians have lost nine of their last 10.

    Notes and tips

The San Diego Padres’ rotation is in big trouble after the team put Dustin Moseley and Aaron Harang on the DL Sunday evening. Harang leads the team with seven wins and Moseley has the club’s best ERA at 3.16 ERA. Mosely, who was scheduled to pitch Monday, is out with a dislocated left shoulder and the team has called up Anthony Bass from Double-A San Antonio to make his MLB debut. Bass was 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA in the minors. Wade LeBlanc (5-1, 5.24 ERA in Triple-A Tucson) is also expected to get the call to join the big club.

The women’s field at Wimbledon looks like it’s going to be a tight draw. Oddsmakers have five women set at +500 or shorter to win the tournament with Maria Sharapova leading the way at +300. Kim Clijsters (+400) is second favorite followed by Serena Williams (+450) and French Open winner Na Li (+500).

After allowing 12 goals in two games in Boston, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo shut out the Bruins in Game 5 and is now pegged as the favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The books have Luongo at +115, just ahead of Boston goalie Tim Thomas (+125). Ryan Kesler has the shortest odds of any skater at +700.

      Monday's six-pack

Six of the most expensive golf courses in America.......
-- Shadow Creek, Las Vegas $500-- MGM's high rollers play here.

-- Pebble Beach, CA $495-- Has hosted five US Opens.

-- Pinehurst #2, NC $395-- Hosted the 2005 US Open.

-- Cascata, Boulder City, NV $375-- Half-hour south of Las Vegas.

-- TPC Sawgrass, FL $375-- Estimated 100,000 balls in lake on 17th.

-- CordeValle CC, San Martin, CA $360-- Frys.com tourney is here.

      **************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

      13) Realignment is a strong possiblity in baseball, with Astros said to be moving to the AL, creating two 15-team leagues. Problem there is 15-team leagues means constant interleague play, which fouls up the schedule, as there would have to be at least one interleague series going on at all times.

I'd rather see them junk the whole thing and go geographic realignment, which would energize the sport. Then you could have different formats for the All-Star Game and make that more fun, too.

      12) Seattle Mariners have used the same five starting pitchers all season so far; Colorado Rockies have already used ten.

      11) In 14 starts this season, Tim Lincecum hasn't allowed a run in the 1st inning, and has allowed only four second-inning runs.

      10) In college baseball, the seams of the ball are raised; in major leagues, the seams are flat. That takes an adjustment by the pitcher, and it isn't as easy as it might seem.

      9) Cardinals' starting pitchers have finished the 6th inning in only three of their last sixteen games. Puts too much of a strain on the bullpen.

      8) Jose Reyes has 13 multiple-hit games in his last 16; he's hitting .346, with an on-base percentage of .391. Good year to be his agent.

      7) Texas Longhorns' defensive coordinator Manny Diaz earns $625,000 in his new job; 14 years ago, he was a production assistant at ESPN, but his passion for football prompted Bill Parcells (who worked at ESPN at that time) to help him get a grad assistant job at Florida State in 1997. He's run with the opportunity and has made himself a terrific career.

      6) NBA teams lost a combined $300M last year. Why? Because stiffs like Eddy Curry make huge money. Over the last three years, Curry has made a total of $31,754,998. He's scored a total of 31 points those three years. The NBA is the one league that is more popular overseas than it is here.

      5) The NBA has a very long season; Mavericks' first regular season game was October 27, 228 days ago. NHL is even longer; Vancouver's started its regular season October 9. Long grind for the contending teams.

      4) Interesting that Dirk Nowitzki just walked to the locker room after his team won the NBA title, giving the Miami players the zero respect they deserve after the way they've carried themselves for the last year. Happy for Jason Kidd (17 years in NBA), happy for Mark Cuban and happy for Nowitzki, a great player who carries himself the right way.

      3) Bruins' defenseman Dennis Seidenberg has played 625 minutes in this spring's playoffs, 30 minutes more than any non-goalie.

      2) Excellent moment Sunday, when golfer Harrison Frazar won his first PGA tournament in 355 tries; the guy is 39, was going to quit pro golf at the end of the year, but now he's set with his Tour card thru 2013. Cool to see a guy so happy when he thought his career might be over.

      1) It bothers me that major league baseball teams don't take infield before games anymore; they take batting practice, right? The pitchers warm up, right? If I owned a big league ballclub, my team would take infield before almost every game, especially on the road. It has to help. It can't hurt.

Home side won all five games in series so far, outscoring visitors 16-3, as Canucks lost their two road games by combined score of 12-1. Four of five series games stayed under total. If you take away Bruins' 8-1 win in Game 3, they're just 1-16 on power play in series (3-20 overall); they've outscored Canucks 9-1 in periods 1-2 in series, but Vancouver won pair of 1-0 games with third period goals. Canucks are 1-25 on power play in series and gave up two shorthanded goals. Vancouver's scoring by period in series: 1-0-4-1. Obviously a bigger game for Boston, but Canucks won all three close games in this series.

Canucks-Bruins Game 6: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Boston Bruins (-143, 5)

        THE STORY
: The Vancouver Canucks are one win away from claiming their first Stanley Cup championship in their 40-year franchise history. Coach Alain Vigneault's club has won three games in the series - all in British Columbia. As for their record in Beantown, well, the Canucks have been clobbered - losing both contests by a combined score of 12-1. Vancouver will try to secure the first road win of the series when it plays for the Stanley Cup in Game 6 on Monday. Should the Boston Bruins emerge triumphant, the series will shift back to the Pacific Northwest for Game 7 on Wednesday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Boston is hoping to avoid being bounced in the NHL's final round for the sixth time since winning the Stanley Cup in 1972. Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas saw his shutout streak come to an end at 110 minutes, 42 seconds when Maxim Lapierre tapped in defenseman Kevin Bieksa's wide point shot in the third period. The All-Star netminder has stopped 774 shots in the playoffs - second most in playoff history behind Kirk McLean, who stopped 820 in Vancouver's run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1994. Boston is 9-3 at home in the playoffs. While admittedly not the highest priority for coach Claude Julien, his next playoff win will move into sole possession of first place in franchise history. He is currently tied with Don Cherry with 31 wins.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: Roberto Luongo was roundly questioned and critiqued following a pair of brutal efforts in Games 3 and 4 of the series. The Vezina Trophy finalist rebounded in style by turning aside all 31 shots he faced in a 1-0 victory in Game 5 on Friday night. Defenseman Chris Tanev played well in his Stanley Cup debut. After taking the place of an ineffective Keith Ballard, Tanev even set up Tanner Glass with what - by all rights - should have been the first goal of the game. With a gaping net, Glass couldn't settle the puck and was unable to unleash a quality shot.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: East Vancouver native Milan Lucic did not register a shot in Game 5 for the Bruins. He has one goal and one assist in the series. Reigning Hart Trophy winner Henrik Sedin has yet to secure a point in the Stanley Cup Finals. By comparison, he collected 21 points (two goals, 19 assists) in the first three rounds.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Boston went 0-for-4 for the second consecutive game to fall to 3-for-21 for the series and 6-for-78 in the playoffs. For its part, Vancouver continued to struggle with the man advantage in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Canucks are 1-for-25 on the power play.

LAST WORD: "It is what it is. The two teams that are here are good teams, and they don't give home-ice advantage away that easily. So they've been good in their own building. I think we've been a decent road team for most of the season, and right now, what we have to do is go back home and create a Game 7 so we get another shot at 'em here." - Julien, on home-ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bet
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Boston Bruins (-145, 5)

If the Vancouver Canucks win the Stanley Cup on Monday night, you’d better believe they’ll deserve it.

After being outscored 12-1 in two losses in Beantown, the Canucks rallied to book a 1-0 victory in Vancouver. That sets up Monday’s Game 6 with the Canucks up 3-2 in the series.

The good news for hockey bettors is that we have gotten all the nonsense of this series out of the way. You won’t see any finger biting or taunting on the ice on Monday because there just isn’t any margin of error.

These teams definitely don’t like each other – that much is pretty obvious – but expect to see a hard fought, straight up battle in Boston. Now that the Canucks have made some adjustments, there aren’t going to be any more blowouts.

“They talked about having a tighter gap, especially in the neutral zone and they did that,” Boston forward Milan Lucic said about Vancouver’s game plan following Game 5. “At times, we weren't moving our feet and standing still, whereas in Boston the reason why we were able to be good in the neutral zone was because we were able to create speed. We've got to find a way to create that speed again.”

By this point in the series, the referees have their whistles in their pockets and they’ll only bring them out on penalties they simply can’t ignore. That means few power plays and makes this under run we’ve been plugging even more enticing.

One image that has to be sticking with Canucks supporters was when Roberto Luongo was called out as the first star of Friday’s game. He skated out with his head high, slammed his stick on the ice once and promptly chucked it over the boards to the fans before high-tailing it for the dressing room.

He’s all business at this point and has a ton to prove heading back to Boston, so if you’re taking the dog here we won’t argue. Still think the under is the best play, regardless who ends up on top.

        Pick: Under

Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                STREAKING

Zach Duke (1-1, 2.37 ERA), Arizona Diamondbacks

It never panned out for Duke in Pittsburgh the way he and the Pirates had hoped but the 28-year-old lefty seems to be fitting in well in his first year with the Diamondbacks.

Duke has allowed just one walk in 19 innings pitched and has two quality starts in three appearances this season. The price isn’t too high on Duke and the Diamondbacks are playing great baseball these days.

Randy Wolf (4-4, 3.49 ERA), Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers were happy to see Zack Greinke toss a gem Saturday against the Cardinals but Milwaukee knows the former Cy Young winner isn’t the only hurler dealing aces these days.

The Brew Crew are 4-0 in Wolf’s last four starts and the veteran southpaw hurler has allowed two runs or fewer in four of his last five trips to the bump. The under is also 6-3 in Wolf’s last nine appearances.

                SLUMPING

Dan Haren (5-4, 2.41 ERA), Los Angeles Angels

This Angels ace hasn’t been terrible but definitely sub-awesome by his standards. The Halos are just 1-3 in Haren’s last four starts and they were favored in each of those games.

The righty flamethrower is dealing with some back pain and Los Angeles pushed his last start back a couple days because of the sore spot.

Bronson Arroyo (4-6, 5.28 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

The Reds don’t ask a lot from their starting pitchers. No, with an offense as powerful as Cincy’s, Reds hurlers just have to be average and the club should win most games.

Arroyo, unfortunately for Cincinnati backers, isn’t toeing the line. He carries an 8.28 ERA over his last five starts and the Reds are 1-4 in those games. Arroyo has been taken out of the park eight times during the cold streak as well.

Atlanta Braves at Houston Astros (+120, 7.5)

Maybe Sunday was the kind of day Dan Uggla needed to really get it going.

Atlanta’s second baseman hadn’t hit a home run since May 15 before he took Brett Myers deep for a two-run shot in a 4-1 win over the Astros. Uggla had just three extra-base hits over that span but has now reached base eight times over Atlanta’s last three games.

“My timing has been better the last couple of days,” Uggla told reporters before Sunday’s game. “When you’re on time you’re going to give yourself a chance. When your timing is off it throws everything off.”

Now that’s he’s turning it on, it’s a good time to be a Braves backer. Atlanta has won six straight and has allowed more than three runs just once during the streak. Derek Lowe gets the call Monday and Atlanta is 7-1 in his last eight trips to the bump.

Houston has just 12 wins at home this season and will be hard pressed to slow down the surging Braves.

                  Pick: Braves

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs (+100, N/A)

This one looks like a mismatch right out of the gate.

The Cubs have won just two of their last 12 and have won just 12 times all season at Wrigley Field. Meanwhile, the Brewers have won 22 of their last 29 after Prince Fielder capped a four-run rally with his 19th homer of the year to give Milwaukee a 4-3 win over St. Louis on Sunday.

It was Fielder’s eighth dinger in the last 10 games and the win moved Milwaukee into top spot in the NL Central.

They look to be in good shape to continue the run Monday as they send lefty Randy Wolf to the hill against Ryan Dempster. Milwaukee has won each of Wolf’s last starts as he boasts a 2.84 ERA over that span.

Dempster has had a tough start to the season but is coming off a 4-1 win over Cincinnati in which he gave up one run on three hits over six innings while striking out eight.

We like the price tag here and don’t think Dempster will be able to contain the Brew Crew’s bats.

                  Pick: Brewers
