Friday’s betting tips: Mets surging behind Gee

    Who’s hot

NHL: The under is 17-6-3 in Vancouver’s last 26 games as a favorite.

MLB: The New York Mets are 8-0 in Dillon Gee’s last eight starts.

MLB: The over is 8-3 in the last Chicago White Sox games.

    Who’s not

NHL: Just one of the last eight meetings between the Canucks and Bruins have played over.

MLB: Cleveland is 9-25 in its last 34 meetings with the Yankees in New York.

MLB: Kansas City has won just seven of its last 26 overall.

    Key stat

6 – Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder had six home runs in seven games this month heading into Thursday’s action. He swatted two big flies in Wednesday’s 7-6 comeback victory over the Mets and now leads the Brewers with 21 multi-homer games. His 17 home runs this season have him tied for the NL lead and his 55 RBIs top the majors.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joba Chamberlin, New York Yankees – The Yankees knew they would be without Chamberlin for a while, but it sounds like the big right-hander could be out a lot longer than expected after tests revealed a torn ligament in his throwing elbow. Early reports indicate Chamberlin may require Tommy John surgery, meaning he could be out for a full year. At any rate, the Yanks are now without their seventh and eighth inning guys out of the bullpen as Rafael Soriano is also on the shelf.

    Game of the day

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-170, 5.5) – Oddsmakers had the Canucks originally set around -150 before the line was bet up to as high as -175 as of Thursday evening.

    Notable quotable

"Louie is going to be fine," "He's one of the best goaltenders in the League. We've got a lot of trust and faith in him, in his ability to play well." – Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault about goaltender Roberto Luongo, who was torched for 12 goals in two games in Boston and pulled in the third period of Wednesday’s loss. Early reports indicate Luongo will be back in goal for Game 5.

    Notes and tips

If you’re thinking about betting either the Yankees or Red Sox on Friday, don’t forget that they didn’t throw the opening pitch of their series finale until after 10:30 p.m. Thursday in the Bronx. New York hosts the Indians Friday evening and is currently listed at -155. Boston is at Toronto as a -140 road favorite.

Somebody had to take the fall for the Florida Marlins’ dismal offensive output and that guy ended up being hitting coach John Mallee, who was fired following Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Former big leaguer Eduardo Perez takes over for Mallee, who had been with the organization for 10 years. The move wasn’t welcomed in the clubhouse, but with the Fish sliding after being 10 games above .500 on May 26 and the club hovering around the break-even mark now, something had to give. “We need to find a way to score some runs," Florida’s president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest told reporters. “We need to stop this. We need to win some ball games."

The San Antonio Silver Stars are coming off a 14-20 season that saw them go 15-18-1 against the spread. This year, they have a lot of new faces in the lineup and their early schedule is helping them get accustomed to one another. San Antonio enjoyed a five-day break after hammering the Tulsa Shock 93-73 and the Silver Stars are now just 4-point road dogs for Friday’s tilt. "(The long layoff) is good for us, with a lot of new faces, just having the ability to keep practicing and evolving with our team," center Ruth Riley told the club's official website. "... We were able to watch a lot of film after the first game and see the mistakes that we made and get on the floor and hopefully correct a lot of those."

      Friday's six-pack

-- In 26 previous NBA Finals that were tied 2-2, team that won Game 5 won 19 of 26 series, but Boston was one of the losers LY.

-- Lebron James has taken a total of 14 foul shots in five Finals games.

-- Prize Padres prospect Anthony Rizzo tripled in his big league debut; Rizzo better be good, since they traded Adrian Gonzalez to get him.

-- Romero/Fister pitched the two complete games Thursday, but both lost their start, Romero 3-2 in Kansas City, Fister 4-1 in Detroit.

-- In an example of extreme greed, the Bronx-Boston game started after 10:30 pm; it had been scheduled to start at 7. School isn't out yet for the year in New York, so they started a game at 10:35 on a school night.

-- This is 7th time NBA/NHL Finals were tied 2-2 in same season.

Home side won all four games in series so far, outscoring visitors 15-3, but Canucks won their two home games with 0:18 left to play and 0:11 into OT, much closer games than when they went to Boston and Bruins outscored them 12-1 in Games 3-4, despite Canucks having 12+ shots on goal in all six periods there; Vancouver is 1-21 in series on the power play (37:36). Three of four series games stayed under total. Odd stat is that Bruins have outscored Vancouver 8-0 in second period in series so far. Canucks' scoring by period in series: 1-0-3-1. Immense pressure on Vancouver here, playing in front of rabid home fans who are starving for franchise's first ever Stanley Cup championship.

Bruins at Canucks Game 5: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-150, 5)

        Series tied 2-2

THE STORY: The Canucks left Vancouver in control and return home in tatters. Two disastrous games in Boston have the Canucks level with the Bruins at two games apiece in the Stanley Cup Final. Game 5 goes Friday night at Rogers Arena, and Vancouver fans are undoubtedly wondering which Canucks team will show up: The one that dominated the first two games at home or the club that was outscored 12-1 in Beantown.

        TV
        : 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: Everything went wrong for the Canucks in Boston. Goaltender Roberto Luongo suffered his second meltdown of the postseason, surrendering 12 goals in just over five periods before giving way to backup Cory Schneider. The offense couldn't muster anything against Boston netminder Tim Thomas, whose 38-save performance was the highlight of Boston's 4-0 triumph Wednesday night. The Canucks even lost a defenseman when Aaron Rome was suspended for the remainder of the final for knocking Bruins forward Nathan Horton out of the series. Vancouver now looks to regroup at home, where it has gone 9-3 in the postseason so far.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: A series that looked like it might be a duel between Vezina Trophy candidates Thomas and Luongo has suddenly become ridiculously one-sided in Thomas's favor. The 37-year-old netminder has surrendered just five goals in the series and was at his best in Game 4, keeping Vancouver's high-powered offense off the scoresheet for just the second time in the playoffs. Boston got a pair of goals from Rich Peverley, who was sensational in Horton's spot on the top line. If the Bruins can steal a Game 5 victory in Vancouver, history will be on their side heading into Game 6. They're 40-8-8 at home all-time against the Canucks.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Nobody is hot for Vancouver - least of all Luongo, who may be on a short leash in Game 5. Bruins F David Krejci had a pair of assists Wednesday to wrestle the playoff scoring lead away from Vancouver's Henrik Sedin. Krejci has 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) in 22 games.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Both teams went 0 for 4 with the man advantage in Game 4. Vancouver is now a dismal 1 for 20 on the power play in the series.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings in Vancouver.
        * Home team is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
        * Under is 5-1-2 in the last eight meetings.

LAST WORD: Thomas has now made the second-most saves of any goaltender in a single postseason with 701. Vancouver's Kirk McLean holds the record with 761 stops during the Canucks' run to the Stanley Cup Final in 1994.

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bet
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks (-170, 5)

The books posted Vancouver as a -150 favorite for Game 5 and that number was already up to as high as -175 by Thursday evening. If you caught the last two games of the series in Boston, you have to be wondering about the line move.

The Bruins did everything better than the Canucks over the last two games. They were faster to every puck, dominated the physical battles and Tim Thomas pulled his magician routine in the blue paint while Roberto Luongo looked like a lost puppy in the cage at the other end.

Instead of igniting the Canucks, Aaron Rome’s devastating hit on Nathan Horton has invigorated the Bruins and that in itself might be enough to get them another win in Vancouver.

Then again, you can’t count the Canucks out just yet.

They’re still getting a ton of shots on goal and if nothing else, they can’t be any worse than they’ve been over the last six periods. We’ve seen this sort of implosion from them already this spring and it's important to see the big picture here.

“You know, if somebody would have told me at the beginning of the year that we could play for the Stanley Cup, best two-out-of-three series with home-ice advantage in front of our fans, I would have taken those odds,” Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault I would have taken that any time to play for the big prize.”

If you’re willing to shell out -170 or -175 on a team that was just outscored 12-1 in a two-game span, be our guest. That said, the under continues to be where the value is in this series and that’s unlikely to change from here on out.

Just one of the last eight meetings between the two clubs have played over and Vancouver is hammering the under at home (16-5-2) and as a favorite (17-6-3).
The goals in Boston were fun but this series will be won with defense and goaltending.

        Pick: Under

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Top 5: Best clubs in one-run games
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have to be good to be lucky or lucky to be good? Baseball bettors don’t believe in lucky, but you have to think there is an element of chance that comes into play during one-run games.

Of course, the makeup of some clubs is better suited for holding or gaining leads late in games. Here’s a look at the Top 5 teams in one-run games heading into Thursday’s action:

San Francisco Giants (17-9 in one-run games)

Last year, the Twins lead the league in one-run wins with 31. The Giants have 17 and we’ve got more than two thirds of the season left.

The defending World Series champions own a stable of quality arms with swing-and-miss stuff in their starting rotation, but the relief staff is getting the job done too. The Giants possess the sixth best bullpen ERA in the majors (3.23) and sport a 15-6 win-loss record.

Before we shower San Fran with too much praise, keep in mind that the club is actually down over 10 units on the runline. That means a lot of those one-run wins were probably games in which it was favored to win.

                  Arizona Diamondbacks (14-8)

The Diamondbacks had won eight straight one-run games before falling 3-2 to the Pirates Wednesday night. Arizona has been all over the map but the club does consistently touch a lot of bases late in games. The D-backs are tied for the third-best slugging percent (.402) from the seventh inning on.

Arizona’s bullpen is in the bottom third of the league in ERA and its other numbers aren’t all that flattering either. But Kirk Gibson’s boys are in good shape going into the ninth with a short lead. Closer J.J. Putz is money in the bank in the final frame with 17 saves in 19 opportunities.

                  Cleveland Indians (12-8)

The Indians may be coming back down to earth, but they’re still coming up on the right side of a lot of close contests. Cleveland is 6-2 in one-run games since May 4.

The secret to the Indians’ success: Coming up with a hit with runners in scoring position. Cleveland bats .281 with RISP compared to just .251 with bases empty.

                  Baltimore Orioles (9-5)

The O’s aren’t involved in as many nail biters but they tend to come through in the clutch. Buck Showalter’s club is more selective at the dish in late-game scenarios. Their on-base percentage jumps from.306 in the first six innings to .333 in the seventh inning on.

                  Philadelphia Phillies (10-7)

What’s not to like about the Phillies? They’ve got an All-Star rotation and the third-best bullpen in the big leagues. Philly is 20-1 in save opportunities this season and that’s without a healthy Brad Lidge. Imagine how dominant the Phillies will be in late innings once Ryan Madison returns to the set-up role and resumes ninth-inning duties.

Hot lines: Friday’s best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakland Athletics at Chicago White Sox (-140, 8.5)

It’s always tricky betting baseball teams that have just changed managers. Some teams react to the switch better to others.

Bob Geren was fired after Wednesday’s loss and replaced by interim skipper Bob Melvin, but like a number of Oakland’s players have said already – Geren took the fall for the club’s poor play. And it’s not like they loved the guy or anything.

What Melvin is – reportedly, anyway – is a good communicator, which is an attribute that was never attached to Geren’s resume.

"Bob's got the rest of this year to make an impact," Billy Beane told reporters. "He's got a big job ahead of him. We'll see how it goes. I have a lot of confidence Bob will have a positive impact."

He probably will, but that won’t help A’s bettors in the short term. Thanks to an ailing pitching staff, Graham Godfrey makes his MLB debut on Friday. Godfrey has been great at Triple-A Sacramento but he comes into a real mess here.

                    Pick: White Sox

Tampa Bay Rays at Baltimore Orioles (+125, 8)

It looks like that nasty flu bug that ripped its way through the Rays’ lineup may have been even worse than anybody was letting on.

"I felt like death for about two days there," Evan Longoria told reporters earlier this week. "I feel 100 percent better today. I'm glad to wake up and feel like I did because it wasn't fun."

While Longoria was battling the stomach virus and a fever that got over 100 degrees, the Rays were heating up on the field with a series sweep of the Angels before enjoying an off day on Thursday.

Now they head back to the diamond healthy and with the surging Jeremy Hellickson on the hill. Hellickson has a 2.64 ERA on the season and has allowed just one run over the last 14 innings.

Tampa Bay has won 10 of its last 13 dates in Baltimore and we’ll happily jump on the road chalk in this spot.

                    Pick: Rays
