Thursday’s betting tips: Chipper calls out Heyward

    Who’s hot

NBA: Miami is 6-1-1 against the spread in its last eight.

MLB: The over is 8-1-1 in Toronto’s last 10 games.

MLB: San Francisco has won 12 of its last 16 home games.

    Who’s not

NBA: The under is 3-8 in the last 11 meetings in Dallas between the Mavericks and Heat.

MLB: The Oakland Athletics have lost nine straight games.

MLB: Washington has won just six of its last 28 games in San Diego.

    Key stat

2 – The Miami Heat scored on just two of its last 20 possessions in Game 4’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks. During that 13-minute span in the fourth quarter the Mavs outscored Miami 19-7 and forced seven turnovers.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Brendan Haywood, Dallas Mavericks – After playing just three minutes in Game 3 before taking himself out of the contest, Haywood admitted that his hip injury could keep him out of the remainder of the NBA Finals. Dallas’ backup center was averaging about 15 minutes per game, so Tyson Chandler is going to have a heavy workload.

    Game of the day

Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks (-1, 184.5)

    Notable quotable

“What Jason needs to realize is that Jason at 80 percent is a force, and Jason at 80 percent is better than a lot of people in this league. And that there are a bunch of his teammates that are out there playing with discomfort and not healthy, and still going at it.” – Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones on injured teammate Jason Heyward, who has been out of the lineup since May 21 with a shoulder issue. Heyward broke in as a rookie last season and turned a lot of heads, but was hitting only .214 with seven homers when he hit the shelf this year.

    Notes and tips

The San Diego Padres hope a 21-year-old slugger can provide a little pop to their lineup. Anthony Rizzo is expected to be promoted to the big leagues in time for Thursday’s game against Washington after rehabbing a left thumb injury. Rizzo had hit 16 dingers in 52 Triple-A games before getting the call from the big club. The Padres rank dead last in the majors in averaging just 3.41 runs per game.

The first week of the WNBA schedule has been pretty tough for the Minnesota Linx. They have managed to win two of their first three (covering once) over a five-day span, but they aren’t out of the woods just yet. They’re set as 7.5-point underdogs Thursday at against the Shock and last season’s MVP Lauren Jackson. "Seattle is the defending champs, and it's the toughest arena to play in, in all of the league," Linx coach Cheryl Reeve told reporters. "We'll see if we can win there, see if we can have the toughness to win a road game in a really tough environment with some really good players.”

      Thursday's six-pack

-- Bruins beat Vancouver 4-0, evening Stanley Cup Finals 2-2; Canucks are now 1-22 on the power play in this series.

-- Pirates are 30-30; last time they were .500 this late in the season was 2005. Solid managing job by Clint Hurdle.

-- Houston's Hunter Pence has a 19-game hitting streak, longest active streak in the big leagues.

-- Cubs drafted Shawon Dunston Jr in the 11th round; his dad played shortstop for 18 years in the big leagues, mostly with the Cubs.

-- Dan Uggla is now 6-56 (.107) with runners in scoring position this season; this isn't good, and shows no sign of getting better.

-- Saskatchewan Roughriders of CFL have acquired the rights to former Ohio State QB Terrell Pryor; would think Pryor goes to the UFL before he plays in Canada, but thats just a guess.

Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

      13) Dallas outscored Miami by 12 points while Jason Kidd was on the floor in Game 4 Tuesday night, so when I refer to Kidd as being +12, that’s what that means; anyway, his +12 was the best plus/minus of anyone in Game 4, yet he didn’t score a point, only had three assists, three rebounds, three steals.

He remains one of the most selfless and best teammates to ever play in the NBA. He’s a good example for every kid of how to be a terrific player without scoring a point-- he makes his teammates better.

      12) Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy now analyzes officiating in NBA games on various websites; here’s a link to something he wrote on Vegas Insider. Donaghy was booted from the NBA and sent to jail-- he bet on games he officiated, which will get you sent to prison.

      11) Philadelphia 76ers, who were valued at $330M by Forbes LY, are up for sale, and some rich dude named Joshua Harris is the frontrunner to buy them. Mr Harris is said to be worth $1.5B. Word is that some rich folks think that NBA teams could be undervalued now, if the owners win the labor struggle and get a much lower salary cap, which would increase their profits.

      10) I’ve started my prep work for college football and in doing so, have uncovered some interesting tidbits, some of which I’ll share with you here, such as over the last six years, Ball State is 21-7 against the spread as a road underdog.

      9) Florida (23-6 vs spread) and Alabama (11-3) have pounded on non-SEC opponents in recent years- those are impressive records by teams that have often been big favorites.

      8) Over the last seven seasons, the least amount of points Boise State has averaged is 36.1 ppg. They’re moving up to Mountain West this season, so we’ll see if they can keep that pace up.

      7) Fresno State is 32-20 SU the last four years, despite being minus-41 in turnovers during that time; hard to believe. Bulldogs are just 2-14-1 as a home favorite the last five years, and since 2002, they’re 7-33-1 vs spread in the game following a SU loss. Weird stats for a winning team.

      6) Milwaukee Brewers drafted HS 3B Trent Boras Tuesday, the son of weasel agent Scott Boras (who once played in Cardinal chain). Wonder if that has anything to do with Prince Fielder (a Boras client) being a free agent this winter?

      5) Brewers tallied back from down 6-2, as Nyjer Morgan had a walk-off hit to beat the Mets 7-6; Fielder had two HRs for Milwaukee. For the Mets, it was their first walk-off loss (or win) of the season.

      4) If you bet the under in the Met-Brewer game, you got hosed; starters allowed total of three runs in 12.2 IP, bullpens allowed ten runs in only five innings. Bitter setback for the Metropolitans.

      3) Marlins' bullpen has now taken the loss in each of Ricky Nolasco's last five home starts; Nolasco is 0-0, 4.13 in those five games.

      2) Florida fired its hitting coach, hired Eduardo Perez away from ESPN's Baseball Tonight. Perez is the son of Tony Perez, who coincidentally or not, is Special Assistant to the President of the Marlins. Young Perez is going to get a lot smarter when Hanley Ramirez comes off the DL.

      1) Angels played their 13th extra-inning game of year Wednesday, after Bobby Abreu tied game with bases loaded double in bottom of the 8th; Rays won the game 4-3 in 10 innings, making LA 4-9 in extra inning tilts so far this season. Angels are struggling to score runs.

        Thursday, June 9

Last three Miami-Dallas games were decided by total of 7 points, so any points worth taking; all four games stayed under so far. How healthy is Nowitzki after he played with 102 fever last game, and missed 13 of his last 16 shots? Chandler (13 pts/16 boards) was huge in Game 4; Mavs' bench (-2) held its own, so pressure on Miami here. James has been to foul line only 12 times in whole series- he had only 8 points last game. Miami bench was just 5-18 from floor in Game 4; Bosh hit some shots, but Heat was 2-14 from arc last game, after going 28-73 in series in first three games. Last home game of the year for Dallas, either way.

Heat at Mavericks Game 5: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks (-2, 185)

        Series tied 2-2

THE STORY: Even with a fever approaching 102 degrees Fahrenheit, Dirk Nowitzki still had enough juice to complete another stunning Dallas Mavericks rally. The Mavs hope Nowitzki will be back at full strength Thursday as they host the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Dallas' win Tuesday evened the best-of-seven at two wins apiece.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ABC, TSN

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS: Dallas couldn't buy a basket in the fourth quarter of Game 4, so Nowitzki used his free-throw excellence to drag the Mavericks out of a nine-point deficit and into striking range. Struggling to catch his breath throughout the final period, Nowitzki mustered enough energy to hit the pivotal shot with 14.4 seconds remaining on the clock. Dallas' suffocating defense took over from there, nearly creating a turnover on Miami's final possession before forcing the Heat to take a desperation 3-pointer that missed badly as time expired. Nowitzki had some help for a change, with four teammates scoring at least 11 points in the win.

ABOUT THE HEAT: If NBA games were 36-minute affairs, South Beach would be awash in champagne. The Heat have led entering the fourth quarter in all four games of the Finals, but another late meltdown Tuesday has turned the series into a best-of-three affair. LeBron James did little on the offensive end, recording just eight points to finish short of double digits for the first time in his playoff career. Chris Bosh had a sensational first half but took several questionable shots after the break. Dwyane Wade was the offensive star with 32 points, but his fumble of a Mike Miller pass in the dying moments cost Miami a chance at a decent game-tying shot.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Mavericks F Shawn Marion gave Dallas the offensive boost it needed on a night when the basket seemed smaller than ever. He finished with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting while continuing to play his trademark stifling defense on Wade and James. Miami G Mario Chalmers hit four 3-pointers in Game 3 but was invisible Tuesday night, missing all three of his long-range attempts.

KEY STATISTIC: 0-7 - The collective record of James' teams when he finishes with fewer than 15 points in a postseason game.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.
        * Heat are 6-1-1 ATS in the last eight meetings in Dallas.
        * Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Dallas.
        * Road team is 21-8-2 ATS in the last 31 meetings.
        * Underdog is 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

LAST WORD: "We all (saw) him go through walkthroughs. "Every time he started to talk he started coughing. He was wheezing." - Chandler on the ailing Nowitzki

Pick 'n' roll: Thursday’s best NBA bet
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks (-1, 185)

At this point in the NBA Finals we have a lot more questions than answers.

Is LeBron James really out of gas and can’t be counted on to carry the Heat? Can Dirk Nowitzki fight through his flu symptoms? Is any fourth-quarter lead safe? Should over bettors just waive the white flag?

It’s enough to make your bankroll spin.

Following Dallas’ miracle comeback 86-83 win to tie the series 2-2, everybody has been ripping LeBron James, who didn’t score a single point in the fourth quarter as the Mavs outscored the Heat 21-9 down the stretch.

Of all the criticism, DeShawn Stevenson’s comment that James had “checked out” was probably the most pointed – and maybe the most accurate.

LeBron shrugged off Stevenson’s comments, but it’s not hard to tell they hit home.

"I've got to do a better job of being more assertive offensively," James told reporters. "I'm confident in my ability. It's just about going out there and knocking them down."

"I think it's that time that I try to get myself going individually."

That’s bad news for Mavericks bettors because like it or not, LeBron is the key to this series and we all know how he plays when guys start calling him out.

The line sits at -1 after opening at -2 and you might be better to wait to see if some Dallas bets move the line back up, but either way, it’s a Miami bet.

        Pick: Heat

Hot lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Minnesota Twins (+125, 8.5)

If ever the Twins needed a big hit, it was in extra innings on Wednesday after closer Matt Capps blew his sixth save of the year by giving up a two-out homer in the ninth inning.

That hit came from rookie Ben Revere in the 10th, giving Minnesota a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians and its second consecutive series win on the road.

The Twins have a long way to go as they still sit 11 ½ games back of the Indians in the division, but at least they can finally unpack their bags for a while.

Minnesota’s win on Wednesday capped off stretch of playing 40 of their first 61 games on the road. The Twins will now be at home for 30 of their next 40.

"We need to get home and get ourselves comfortable there," manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters. "We need to continue this running around the bases and play some exciting baseball to get our fans into it. We need to give them some entertainment at home, and it's about time."

                    Let’s see it, skip.

                    Pick: Twins

St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros (-105, 8.5)

On first glance, Lance Lynn’s first MLB start doesn’t look like anything he ought to be hanging his hat on. The 24 year old right-hander was tagged for five runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 12-7 loss to the San Francisco Giants last week.

But those numbers don’t tell the whole story. Lynn looked cool as ice sitting down the first 10 Giants he faced and needed just 54 pitches to get through five innings with five strikeouts.

If it wasn’t for a few defensive gaffes behind him that helped San Francisco put a few runs on the board, he could have been in the game a lot longer.

"It was good to get it under my belt. It gives me something to build off of. I need to keep pushing and keep fighting and getting deeper into games and not let that one inning happen,” Lynn told reporters.

This kid has some composure. Jump on the visiting Cardinals at this price.

                    Pick: Cardinals
